This place is a hidden gem! It's a small place with very limited seatings and just the couple who also own the place , also works there. It's hard to find a table and you'll be standing for a while if you're not there before they open. The husband makes all the sushi's while the wife makes the appetizers and also takes the orders. The food, however, is excellent and so is their service. You want to order everything together or you'll have to wait your turn in line if you add anything later. We ordered their tofu and edamame from the appetizers and shaggy dog, salmon rolls, spicy salmon roll and cucumber roll for the two of us. Everything tasted really good. The wife is always smiling and although super busy, she gives each table the time and respect they deserve. Love their enthusiasm and desire to keep going!

Love the spicy tuna crunch maki roll, the spicy chopped scallops, and spider maki roll.

This was my 3rd time visiting Sushi Miyagi, and as expected, there was already a line out the door before the shop even opened. Since it's literally run by a mom and pop, the hours are limited compared to other sushi places; thus, I only make a visit once in a blue moon. The decor is a bit run-down, but I find it quite charming and cozy! There are only about 7 tables, so only a limited number of customers are permitted. The prices are higher, but given how labor intensive it is for ONE man to prepare the food, it makes sense. I came with a friend to celebrate our birthday month, and even though we had been waiting since 11:45 AM, we weren't seated until 1 PM and weren't able to eat our meal until 2 PM. Nonetheless, the wife serving us (and everyone else) was still very sweet and did her best to keep up with all the tables. :) I ordered: - Spicy Scallop Maki (5/5): pretty safe, the spice is subtle, but you can't go wrong with ordering it. - Houston Maki (3/5): I was a bit let down. The chef was very generous with the slab of salmon, which I appreciate; I do think he skimped out on the spicy mayo, so the avocado + salmon sashimi combo felt mushy in texture. Dipping it in soy sauce did help, though! My friend ordered: - White Spider Maki (2/5): Not a fan of wasabi whatsoever, and they put wasabi tobiko through the crevices of the sushi roll; my friend didn't realize this, so when he dipped it in his wasabi soy sauce, it was a lot for him to handle, to say the least... - Dragon Maki (4.5/5): I don't usually eat eel for sushi, but I enjoyed this roll a lot and it pairs surprisingly well with sweet potato. This was my first time waiting long hours, which dampened my experience a bit; the concept of an elderly couple running a sushi restaurant is cute, but I think they'd benefit from having at least one more worker helping with taking orders/serving food, or cleaning dishes, etc. The quality of their sushi is up there, but I recommend that others come as early as possible and have A LOT of patience + time to kill. Sushi Miyagi is a very cute mom & pop shop with several unexplored options, so I will continue supporting, but it's not a business I would frequent often.

The wait was worth it! We got here almost right at opening and it was almost full on a Thursday. I would recommend getting here at 11:45 if possible. The Shaggy Roll was the highlight! The service can be a little slow but the taste and art with the food was worth it. Best for smaller parties!

This is my all time fave spot in Houston. It's a literal mom and pop place, with pop making sushi and mom serving and making everything else. It's also quite unique with eclectic decor and music. It definitely reminds me of if my parents would start a restaurant: kind of doing what they want but that having its own charm. The sushi is the best in town, especially for the price range. I never can seem to finish--the portions are quite generous, especially for the price. It's also super fresh and tasty. Service is slow--we got in at 12:30, seated at 1:00 and didn't get our food until 2:00. Patience is a virtue at Miyagi sushi, and well worth the wait. The staff are always kind, and helpful. Despite the rise of vibe dining omakase spots, the sushi scene in Houston is still limited and the Japanese-owned demographic is virtually nil. Sushi Miyagi has been the exception to the norm and is run by a sweet older Japanese couple that add to the charm of what might be Houston's least pretentious sushi spot. Located on the Vietnamese side of Bellaire Asiatown, Sushi Miyagi is about as easy to miss as any business in this nondescript plaza. Had it not been for a friend's urging, I probably would have never made it here. Due to limited hours, lunch time is practically the only time one can eat here. It is also incredibly popular and wait times are expected. This is not a group friendly experience, but more of a small group or lunch date kind of space. It is dingy and dated, but the service and food more than makes up for it. It is worth repeating that there is nothing fancy here. The older Japanese gentleman is typically cooking and cutting all the fish. The cuts of which I've had have been excellent, with thick slabs of quality fish. Their charashi bowl was an excellent choice, but the omakase really gave them a chance to shine and it was outstanding all around. Unlike the counterside, course by course, trendy omakase experience that most people are used to, mine was all made and served on a single plate. $65 later, I'm full and extremely satisfied. The highlights were the hamachi yellow tail and foodgasm worthy toro tuna belly. It was a perfect variety of what they had to offer and would highly recommend it for anyone who is serious about their fish. The older lady serving everyone is such a gem. She is constantly smiling and doing her best to make sure everyone is tended to. Parking is never going to be an issue and I hope they stay continue to run this excellent business for as long as time permits. Given how little recognition they, it would be safe to say this is one of the most underrated places in all of Houston.

This place is UNREAL. What a spot. Melts in your mouth good food. I'm grateful I was able to try this spot. This is a MUST try spot for sushi lovers.

It's like visiting grandma's house.... When grandma is an amazing chef and you know the wait is worth it. Don't come if you're in a rush. Food is amazing. Actually, don't come. It's hard enough getting a table as it is.

This is a mom & pop shop. So the ambiance is homey. The husband and wife duo is very sweet. Love the instrumental music playing - you can see the chef in his groove when he into the music and making the sushi! With just the two of them, patience is needed with their service. However, I believe their food is worth the wait. (I also admire their work ethic) . I would normally line up before they open to get a spot. Please make sure you wait and get the ok to be seated. Ordering To-Go doesn't mean you cut the line also. I've tried a good amount of food on their menu and I've thought it was money well spent. Also their cuts for the rolls are big. Honorable mentions: Spicy chop scallop Crispy spicy salmon maki Sashimi Gomoku udon JK maki

Best little straightforward sushi spot to satisfy my sushi cravings. I haven't had miso soup like how this place makes theirs - SO good, umami, and flavorful, but have heard it can be a tad salty for some people. I ordered the assorted sushi from the main menu. It comes with 3 of each thick cuts of tuna, salmon, and hamachi nigiri. I thought there was a little bit too much wasabi between the fish and rice, coming from a person who enjoys a little spice. The salmon bowl is as advertised - several pieces of fatty salmon with pickled radish over a bed of rice. Some may think rice ratio is too much, but I think it's needed to cut through the richness of the fish.

I've run across this restaurant on yelp multiple times and finally decided to give it a try. First impressions of the restaurant front is not the best since it looks kind of run down, but after entering you can see it was a very cozy hole in the wall restaurant with limited seats ran by a very hard working people. You can literally see them pacing to make the food, take order, and clean the tables. The food was good even with me having to self seat myself at the beginning.

Finally had a day off to try this hole in the wall weird hour sushi spot!! And it did not disappoint the portion sizes are HUGEEEE! The chopped scallop was sooo thick and full of scallop and look at that thick slice of yellow tail! Between that and the chirashi bowl I was actually stuffed! The sizes and bowl were so good can't wait for my next day off!

Nut allergies: No nuts in sushi, of course. The advice to get here early is no joke. We actually got here at 11 on a Saturday and there was no line, so we walked over to another plaza for a bit. When we came back by 11:30, there were already three groups in line! We got one of the last tables. The wait if you arrive late is 90-100 minutes, so I'd try to get here at 1pm or 2pm if you miss the opening wait and hope that others have been dissuaded. The first table opened up at 1:10PM and people were definitely waiting. If you're in for an intimate experience with a long meal with friends with amazing sushi while listening to Ocarina of Time music, this is the place to be. A little hidden gem in a side of Bellaire that isn't often frequented, Sushi Miyagi is run by an elderly Japanese couple that only opens a few hours a day. You can really tell how much care goes into the food here, as tea is even served at a very reasonable price ($1 for hot tea with a full kettle to refill!) For a group of 5, we ordered the Sashimi for 2, Maki for 2, and a lunch rice curry special. The sashimi for 2 was so big that we thought they combined both our orders into one! The lunch rice curry was enough for five people to have 3-4 bites each. The sashimi was absolutely stellar - large pieces that are sliced perfectly against grains to still be melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The pickled Mackerel may have changed my whole perspective on Mackerel - extremely fatty and very flavorful! Other highlights were the chopped scallops and eel. Came out at just under $50 after tax and tip and our group left stuffed! We left around 1:35PM. I'd love to come back when I want an intimate sushi experience and the weather isn't too hot to wait outside.

Are they on vacation? I tried to call but it went straight to voicemail.

This place is quite "unique". Too busy husband wife team. No way time to pick up the phone. Doubtful accept phone orders. It's an in person be super patient experience that is worth the wait. Amazing sushi.

Has Sushi Miyagi resumed dine in service yet?

Only to-go orders now. No phone orders. Please come in and order. Thank you!

Do they still have uni (sea urchin)? thank you!

After this discussion, I said fine and asked for a menu. They then told me I had to get up and order at the register and view the menu glued to the counter. They took the order of a couple who sat down maybe 2 minutes before me in front of me. I will never come back to this place. They seem to be the last man standing in this dining hall, and with this kind of customer service, they won't last much longer. It's a shame because I love the food and I am a regular at handies and aiko as well. Won't be back to any of them.

The restaurant itself was pretty packed - there wasn't any parking (but they do have an overflow lot you can use). Inside the vibe was nice & upscale. It was surprisingly not intimate & was a little loud. The bathroom hallway was very cool (as the other reviews have said) I got the three course lunch w/ an added chutoro nigiri. The restaurant week lunch was fine, but the nigiri really stood out. I wish they would've had even just one nigiri on the restaurant week menu. The kombu salad was good & had nice flavor without being too overpowering. The hamachi crudo was awesome!! I'm a big crudo fan, but this one was above and beyond my expectations. All of the flavors played so well together & my yellowtail was so fresh and light and buttery. I loved the creaminess of the sauce & how it balanced the acidity of the tomatoes & onion so well. I savored every bite. Honestly the hand rolls left a lot to be desired. The kani hand role wasn't super great. The flavor was mid & the texture felt a bit off. I also thought sake hand roll was just ok.. My chutoro nigiri was also awesome. The cut was beautiful & the fish was super fresh and had an awesome texture. It just melted in my mouth. GENERALIZED REVIEW:…read more Came here with a friend from theatre after a full run--he had this place recommended to him by another theatre friend, so we're just passing on the word. The plaza was a bit confusing to navigate, and I'm pretty sure if the place weren't full of Asian parents and their kids, it would've felt like the shadiest place ever because you have to enter from the back. Otherwise, the plaza had a lot of great-looking stores overall. My first go-to: I've loved drinking Kirin Light ever since I discovered it in Chicago. The flavor is literally so light, with a slight acidity that brightens up my meal. The sake here was frankly also delicious. I didn't order it, but my friend did, and they had it warmed. The flavor was soothing and subtle, almost like tea. It was exceptionally easy to drink, and the ocean-themed ceramicware was a beautiful touch. We ordered two rolls: the Shaggy Dog and the Truffalufagus (a fun tongue-twister). I personally chose the Truffalufagus (which is not fun to spell) because it seemed like the most unique dish on the menu, and I enjoyed it very much. What I liked most about it was that it was subtle yet impactful. I also loved the textures--from the internal crunch paired with the fresh jalapeño to the softness of the fish. I'm glad I gave this roll a shot, and I would be excited to try it again anytime. The Shaggy Dog was great, but it appealed less to my flavor profile. It was a little too rich and creamy for me. I recommended this place to my BF as a potential future date spot--I personally think he would like it... if he weren't the type to enjoy AYCE sushi so much. If they had more unique rolls, I would definitely come back just for those. I was tempted to order the Surf and Turf for this round, but I didn't want to seem like a glutton, hahaha.

We loved the addition of laksa and his Malaysian influence. It was so hard to pick a favorite. The sake FLOWS! It's truly unlimited. We had so much fun. The interior is vibe in itself. If you go for the 8 o'clock seating, they do karaoke after and I can only imagine how fun that it since Chef Sky is so fun. He shared so much knowledge and was just so much fun to talk to as well. We finished our meal and stayed another 40 minutes talk to Chef and enjoying the sake. It really is more than just sushi. You will not find wasabi and soy sauce anywhere. Each of the sauces elevates each bite you take and compliments it so well. Here's what we enjoyed: 1.Madai (jalapeño dressing ) 2.Hickory smoke sichimi salmon ( crunchy garlic and sweet & sour sauce ) 3.Scallop with sesame oil , truffle salt , fried garlic , ponzu and mint leaf ) 4.Malaysian curry laksa 5.Tuna (Spain ) mango salsa make with tom yum sauce 6.Kanpachi (Hawaii ) truffle oil , Himalayan salt & lemon zest 7.King salmon (New Zealand ) seared with yuzu miso and Malaysian crunchy fried anchovy 8. Santa Barbara uni shooter 9. Founder (repulic of Korea) homemade pepper sauce 10. Seared escolar with pork floss 11. Toro with creamy cilantro lime sauce with kizami wasabi 12 . Hamachi with Malaysian style sweet garlic sauce 13. Unagi with old granny spice and yuzu salt 14. mango crepes cake

Really good sushi. We went on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty. Maybe one or two other…read morediners. The good news it was quiet. The bad news is that things come out too fast, other than the cocktails we ordered first, which showed up after the first course did. I find that a bit irritating. I guess maybe their bar/drinks person went home. But still, a great place in the Heights area. Great fresh sushi, imaginative cocktails and pleasant staff. Will go back when we are in the area

We decided to sit at the bar on a Saturday night. This may be where we went wrong. The bartenders…read morewere so busy making drinks that at times we had to flag them down to get things. Probably wouldn't recommend sitting at the bar. Food: -Spicy Edamame (4/5): Flavor is a literal different so took a minute for us to get into it, spice sneaks up on you (at first it's kind of sweet). - MF Box (5/5): My personal favorite. The taste and texture are perfect. Very light but flavorful. -Tokyo Roll (5/5): Very good as well. -Hamachi Serrano (3/5): Okay. Not my favorite but wanted to try it out. Texture wasn't for me and could of had a little more flavor. -Baked Lobster Tempura (4/5): Good appetizer option. Sauce was very good, but just a lot. -Shisito (3/5): very few in the portion, average. Drinks: -Spicy Margarita (2/5): Not on the menu just ordered it. Tasted pretty watery. -Oishii (5/5): Wanted to try this drink which is made with Japense Whisky. I would describe it as a piña colada cousin. Was very good, could of been a bit bigger (haha). Worth a try if you like sweet drinks. Overall definitely recommend this place for sushi lovers or those trying to be adventurous. Staff was very nice. Valet parking available. Will definitely be back.
