This place is a hidden gem! It's a small place with very limited seatings and just the couple who also own the place , also works there. It's hard to find a table and you'll be standing for a while if you're not there before they open. The husband makes all the sushi's while the wife makes the appetizers and also takes the orders. The food, however, is excellent and so is their service. You want to order everything together or you'll have to wait your turn in line if you add anything later. We ordered their tofu and edamame from the appetizers and shaggy dog, salmon rolls, spicy salmon roll and cucumber roll for the two of us. Everything tasted really good. This was my 3rd time visiting Sushi Miyagi, and as expected, there was already a line out the door before the shop even opened. Since it's literally run by a mom and pop, the hours are limited compared to other sushi places; thus, I only make a visit once in a blue moon. The decor is a bit run-down, but I find it quite charming and cozy! There are only about 7 tables, so only a limited number of customers are permitted. The prices are higher, but given how labor intensive it is for ONE man to prepare the food, it makes sense. I came with a friend to celebrate our birthday month, and even though we had been waiting since 11:45 AM, we weren't seated until 1 PM and weren't able to eat our meal until 2 PM. Nonetheless, the wife serving us (and everyone else) was still very sweet and did her best to keep up with all the tables. :) I ordered: - Spicy Scallop Maki (5/5): pretty safe, the spice is subtle, but you can't go wrong with ordering it. - Houston Maki (3/5): I was a bit let down. The chef was very generous with the slab of salmon, which I appreciate; I do think he skimped out on the spicy mayo, so the avocado + salmon sashimi combo felt mushy in texture. Dipping it in soy sauce did help, though! My friend ordered: - White Spider Maki (2/5): Not a fan of wasabi whatsoever, and they put wasabi tobiko through the crevices of the sushi roll; my friend didn't realize this, so when he dipped it in his wasabi soy sauce, it was a lot for him to handle, to say the least... - Dragon Maki (4.5/5): I don't usually eat eel for sushi, but I enjoyed this roll a lot and it pairs surprisingly well with sweet potato. This was my first time waiting long hours, which dampened my experience a bit; the concept of an elderly couple running a sushi restaurant is cute, but I think they'd benefit from having at least one more worker helping with taking orders/serving food, or cleaning dishes, etc. The quality of their sushi is up there, but I recommend that others come as early as possible and have A LOT of patience + time to kill. This is my all time fave spot in Houston. It's a literal mom and pop place, with pop making sushi and mom serving and making everything else. It's also quite unique with eclectic decor and music. It definitely reminds me of if my parents would start a restaurant: kind of doing what they want but that having its own charm. The sushi is the best in town, especially for the price range. I never can seem to finish--the portions are quite generous, especially for the price. It's also super fresh and tasty. Service is slow--we got in at 12:30, seated at 1:00 and didn't get our food until 2:00. Patience is a virtue at Miyagi sushi, and well worth the wait. The staff are always kind, and helpful. Despite the rise of vibe dining omakase spots, the sushi scene in Houston is still limited and the Japanese-owned demographic is virtually nil. Sushi Miyagi has been the exception to the norm and is run by a sweet older Japanese couple that add to the charm of what might be Houston's least pretentious sushi spot. Located on the Vietnamese side of Bellaire Asiatown, Sushi Miyagi is about as easy to miss as any business in this nondescript plaza. Had it not been for a friend's urging, I probably would have never made it here. Due to limited hours, lunch time is practically the only time one can eat here. It is also incredibly popular and wait times are expected. This is not a group friendly experience, but more of a small group or lunch date kind of space. It is dingy and dated, but the service and food more than makes up for it. It is worth repeating that there is nothing fancy here. The older Japanese gentleman is typically cooking and cutting all the fish. The cuts of which I've had have been excellent, with thick slabs of quality fish. Their charashi bowl was an excellent choice, but the omakase really gave them a chance to shine and it was outstanding all around. Unlike the counterside, course by course, trendy omakase experience that most people are used to, mine was all made and served on a single plate. $65 later, I'm full and extremely satisfied. The highlights were the hamachi yellow tail and foodgasm worthy toro tuna belly. It was a perfect variety of what they had to offer and would highly recommend it for anyone who is serious about their fish. The older lady serving everyone is such a gem. She is constantly smiling and doing her best to make sure everyone is tended to. Parking is never going to be an issue and I hope they stay continue to run this excellent business for as long as time permits. After hearing about this place from so many people, despite having it in my bookmarks for so long, I finally got a chance to pay Sushi Miyagi a visit within their narrow time window of operations. For a Friday lunch, we were 3rd in line at about 11:45am, 15 min before they opened. We got sat right at 12, but despite knowing exactly what we wanted to order, we had to wait about 10 minutes. The shop is operated by a middle aged couple, with the husband behind the sushi bar, and the wife running between the kitchen and taking orders. So expect the lunch experience to be a bit slower than the standard restaurant. We didn't order much sushi, since we were more enticed by the unique entrees that are a rare find in other Japanese restaurants in Houston. The Hanburg Steak was definitely a first in Houston. Two big juicy patties were served drenched in a tomato-based sauce. One of the patties was piping hot, but the other however was room temperature like it had been left out for 30min. The sauce was a bit on the sweeter side, and becomes a bit too sweet for me upon cooling down, but very pleasant. The patties were very tender. If you're a texture person, then the Crispy Spicy Salmon Salad is a must. The way the salmon roe pops, the crunch from the tempura bits, and the crisp lettuce makes the ultimate texture bomb. A bit pricey at $40 though. The Unadon comes with two huge pieces of Unagi, that isn't over-sauced like most places serve you with. Love the instrumental music playing - you can see the chef in his groove when he into the music and making the sushi! With just the two of them, patience is needed with their service. However, I believe their food is worth the wait. (I also admire their work ethic) . I would normally line up before they open to get a spot. Please make sure you wait and get the ok to be seated. Nut allergies: No nuts in sushi, of course. The advice to get here early is no joke. We actually got here at 11 on a Saturday and there was no line, so we walked over to another plaza for a bit. When we came back by 11:30, there were already three groups in line! We got one of the last tables. The wait if you arrive late is 90-100 minutes, so I'd try to get here at 1pm or 2pm if you miss the opening wait and hope that others have been dissuaded. The first table opened up at 1:10PM and people were definitely waiting. If you're in for an intimate experience with a long meal with friends with amazing sushi while listening to Ocarina of Time music, this is the place to be. A little hidden gem in a side of Bellaire that isn't often frequented, Sushi Miyagi is run by an elderly Japanese couple that only opens a few hours a day. You can really tell how much care goes into the food here, as tea is even served at a very reasonable price ($1 for hot tea with a full kettle to refill!) For a group of 5, we ordered the Sashimi for 2, Maki for 2, and a lunch rice curry special. The sashimi for 2 was so big that we thought they combined both our orders into one! The lunch rice curry was enough for five people to have 3-4 bites each. The sashimi was absolutely stellar - large pieces that are sliced perfectly against grains to still be melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The pickled Mackerel may have changed my whole perspective on Mackerel - extremely fatty and very flavorful! Other highlights were the chopped scallops and eel. Came out at just under $50 after tax and tip and our group left stuffed! We left around 1:35PM. Sushi Miyagi is a cute hole in the wall restaurant run by an elderly couple. The husband is the sushi chef who prepares the food at the sushi bar next to the dining room area while the wife handles the rest of the business. There's only about 8-10 tables, so I hear it gets quite busy during lunch and the weekends. I went around 2PM on a Tuesday and luckily there were only a few other parties there. It's a cute homey restaurant and the wife is super sweet to talk to. She is also very attentive and quick to come take our order when ready. The lunch specials are largely portioned and each come with a miso soup. The unagi from the Unaju Lunch was perfectly cooked and just melted in my mouth. The Japanese Curry Rice Lunch came piping hot and comes in a portion that left me with plenty of leftovers. On top of that we got a few pieces of sushi, and let me tell you, they were the largest slices of fish I've seen in Houston. Each order of sushi comes with 2 pieces and are decently priced. Although this restaurant is only opened for a few hours a day, I most definitely believe this place is worth the visit. Don't get me wrong, it tastes like other miso soups but there was something about it that I like better than all other ones I've tried. I also love the use of tobiko in their rolls (instead of masago which I see more often). The tobiko adds a nice crunch and saltiness to the bite. The husband is the one making/assembling all the sushi and sashimi while the wife is tirelessly taking and running orders. My friend and I ordered the Agedashi Tofu, Spicy Hotate Sushi, Spicy Salmon Roll, and the Sushi Lunch Combo. From the miso soup to the sushi, everything tasted amazing and fresh here. The agedashi tofu was perfectly fried and the sauce was delicious. The sushi was just as amazing - the fish pieces were thick so I appreciate the fact that they didn't skimp on that unlike many other sushi spots. The interior was also super cute, full of Japanese decor and knick knacks. I was also able to talk to the owners a little bit and they are super sweet and hardworking. Whew. Feels like I haven't written a new review in forever since Yelp ate my Aiko one. So sorry about that! Anyway, Miyagi is a place that I liked better than most, yet can't help but feel lukewarm about due to the bigger context. It is by far the best sushi in Houston in terms of value for money (Aiko still edges in raw taste), but only because the state of sushi in Houston is truly horrendous. It confidently clears a bar that was pretty low to clear. Other reviewers have mentioned all the inconveniences you have to go through to get a coveted lunch at Sushi Miyagi already - which I can attest to. I won't repeat the list here, but it reminds me of the time I waited in line for some Din Tai Fung in Seattle: The whole thing was built up as if you were going to experience something very special, yet it just ended up being a decent neighborhood place. My followers will know that my standard for sushi is Kyoten Next Door in Chicago in terms of taste and Koto in Fort Wayne in terms of value. Miyagi is almost as revered as the former while almost as packed as the latter, but doesn't come nearly close on either front. That being said, if you were to try to average Kyoten and Koto, you'd probably get something close to Miyagi. The fish is cut thick and plenty fresh, the price is understandable but otherwise not too cheap nor expensive. I particularly liked the saba (mackerel). It is a very fresh and slightly fatty saba that doesn't have any of the usual sour taste nor tough texture. My friend liked the squid and how clean, not-slimy it is as well. The hiyayakko is exactly what it is and what it is is a mistake (I don't know what kind of kami urged me to order cold tofu at the time). The Hambagu (sometimes called "Salisbury steak" - a word I have never heard outside the circle of nerds and insufferable food snobs), my main dish, is best summed up as a "xíu mại on rice but fast food". For context, xíu mại is a large Vietnamese meatball, not too different from the kind you have with spaghetti, can be found in bánh mì, and is often eaten with tomato sauce. Replace the tomato sauce with ketchup and Kewpie mayo and there you have it. The kinuta maki was exciting and peculiar (I had the yellowtail filling), but not overall too impressive. I don't think the vinegary dressing on the daikon nor its innately bland flavor mix very well with the fish, and can understand why this dish is not very popular elsewhere in the States. TL;DR A good way to end my sushi journey in Houston "with a bang", but I don't think I'll seek out any more sushi in this city again. P.S. The next review won't be about sushi I promise! read more

I never understood the hype around eel until I tasted the eel from here--such fresh and thick pieces!! The plating here is beautiful too, they do the most for only an old couple running the whole thing with no other employees! The downside of that is the initial table wait is very long, you should come before 1:30 if you expect to get a seat at all. Salmon here was super delicious as well, and what's nice is the lunch specials come with miso soup, which is always comforting. They seem to be quite generous with the portions while keeping quality with each piece, which I love. Definitely coming back here again (if I can wake up before 1pm...) I haven't been here in years!!! I have returned. We had to map it to make sure we got to the correct place. The outside is hard to identify the restaurant until you see the windows (the name is on the window). You enter and the lady (I believe it's a husband and wife team) will seat you and there are only 7 tables. We went around 1:30 on a weekday. She will take your order and she is very helpful and patient. We ordered the sushi lunch special, udon noodles soup, and 6 piece salmon sushi. The lunch special comes with a miso soup. The sushi has thick pieces of fish on it. The udon soup is HUGE!!! Everything tasted great. Our food came out pretty quick! They don't take orders over the phone so if you want to-go, you still have to wait your turn in person. Their menu is huge for just two people managing the entire restaurant. The sushi pieces are so big, so the rice ratio is sometimes too much but I don't mind. Their yellowtail and spicy scallop sushi were my favorites, I would definitely come back just for that. My pregnancy called for it and I had to make the drive down here and wait for opening to get it. Worth it. The chirashi bowl is well portioned and very fresh. (Pic not taken) It's a small mom and pop shop so expect slower than usual service. However, the wife is super sweet so you just can't help but be understanding. Sometimes I do wish they'd hire help to speed the process along. It seems like they can accommodate about 6-8 tables at a time. The most comforting mom & pop sushi shop!! The quaint & cozy restaurant made me feel at home as I ate my meal, and everything tasted like it was made with love. The sushi tastes clean & fresh, and every piece was cut into thick slices. Miso soup comes with your meal if you order a chirashi or sushi set from the lunch menu, it was delicious! It was so warm and silky, and the green onions were cut into perfectly thin slices that complimented the soup. The udon had a bouncy chewy texture. I loved everything that I tried from here. The quality is amazing, and the owners seem to love what they do. There may be a bit of a wait since the restaurant is ran by the couple, but it's worth the wait if you have time! read more

They service table in order of arrival so if you are the last table seated, it could be a good hour before you can order and get your food.
