What a weird experience, went off reviews to find this spot, went with my family on a Tuesday night, no one there, waited 10 minutes for anyone to come to our table, asked for water, was told they only had bottled...ordered the $2 a bottle water, started our order and asked if our daughter could have a bowl of rice. Was told no, they only make sushi. So let me get this straight, you own a sushi restaurant and we were going to order sushi, and a bowl of white rice, she refused. Paid $4 for the bottled waters we had opened and left. Went across the bridge to the Hibachi/sushi restaurant, full, service was great and they could actually fill a bowl with white rice. Each roll had a clean, unique flavor combination, and it's clear that a lot of thought goes into the ingredients and pairings. We couldn't stop talking about each dish as we left. I think it's the best sushi in Beaufort. The rolls are so creative and fun. I love the Carson roll with peanut butter and the New York roll with apple!?! So good, trust me. We also enjoy the super crunch roll! The host and the chef are so friendly. Really great local spot. I recommend going early when they first open. Walked in, immediately hit by the smell of cigarettes. Figured whatever, let's try to food. The menu wasn't up to date, dirty, with prices written over with pen. Got a California roll and a miso soup and some waters. No water on tap we got bottled waters, which we were charged for. No tofu in my miso. The hours are a little strange so be sure to check before you go. There are not that many places to get sushi in Beaufort most are in Savannah. This place is delicious when you want a few rolls for the day. I ordered the dragon roll, T&T roll, the Mandy and the fire roll. Now the fire roll is nothing to play with so make sure your taste buds can handle the heat. The rolls are very large 2 of us ate off of 4 rolls. It is a bit pricey but not outrageous. Surprisingly excellent sushi hidden in a strip mall. My group of friends and I stumbled upon this place by accident. After seeing the excellent yelp reviews, we had to check it out late one night. We arrived at 8:30pm and were the only ones in the restaurant. Our hostess was very helpful with our selections and gave us complimentary edamame as an appetizer. The girlfriend and I opted for the $35 meal for two, which included eight California rolls, twelve sashimi, soup, salad, and shrimp tempura. The sushi and sashimi were excellent - the rolls didn't fall apart when picking up with chopsticks or dipping in soy sauce, and tasty. The only below average part was the shrimp tempura - the shrimp was good but the rest was underwhelming, including the bland dipping sauce. So in sum, Sushi Sakana serves some really great sushi, and it's worth the price to try. read more

Sushi Sakana offers fresh sushi and creative rolls. We love sashimi and the yellow tail is always sweet but some times it has been a bit frozen. We talked to owner Monica and Mr Kim and he explained sashimi is a higher quality than sushi and he doesn't always have enough thawed. Now we call at 5 and place our order for the yellowtail sashimi. We have been surprised by the owners with a sushi treat on the house or even hamachi kama. As a regular, you are given your own box with special chop sticks. I have been in this area since February of 2011 and I have dined at every Japanese restaurant in the area from the city of Beaufort, to Port Royal, and St. Helena Island. I dine at this restaurant three or four times a week. I've invited my coworkers and they always insist that we go there for lunch. There are two things that set Sakana apart from the other Asian/Japanese themed restaurants in this area: 1. Freshness of the food. The owners do a masterful job with their inventory because every mushroom, every slice of lettuce, and every entree that they have their full taste. The sushi rolls are always fresh. They have a nice counter/bar area where you can witness the creation of your sushi rolls. 2. Creativity/Expertise. The owner never misses a day behind the sushi bar. I've been so impressed with every sushi roll that I tried. On my last visit, I asked how long had he been preparing sushi. His wife told me that he has traveled all over the United States and other countries and he has learned specific specialties in his craft. If you take a look at the sushi menu, his versatility is evident. Most places in this area offer few specialty rolls. Sakana specializes in special rolls! (-: They serve fine hibachi for those who are not into sushi. My top favorites: 1. Sunset Roll 2. Beaufort Roll 3. Diablo Roll 4. Birthday Roll (must see) 5. Marine Roll 6. Absolutely love their Special Rolls. My definite favorite so far has to be the Super Crunch roll. The shrimp tempura with the avocado & the spicy crab with the crunch on top is so delicious. This is our favorite place to eat. The service is outstanding and the owner is the most wonderful person. You can't find many places like this anymore that makes the patrons feel special. If you become a regular, you even get your own personal chopsticks. The sushi is amazing and fresh. I love the 911 roll (very spicy hot). The sushi boat for two is very filling and comes with tempura that is to die for, I highly recommend. My 6 year old enjoys the pork tonkasu (breaded pork) every time and loves it.
