The food was okay, the gyoza was premade/most likely frozen. The teriyaki salmon was tender and cooked very well, however the vegetables and fried rice that come with the entree is very under seasoned and doesn't have any flavor at all. The ginger dressing for the salad was good, and the miso soup was good. I did like how much variety comes with the teriyaki dishes. I have ordered the Negi Hama Roll and the yellowtail did not taste the freshest, mediocre at best. The Hilton Head Roll was good but nothing too special. The mango mochi ice cream was definitely just store-bought, and I wouldn't recommend paying two small ice cream mochi for $5. I find that the prices are a bit expensive, however the ambiance and presentation is great. Good for a date night, however when it is busy, it is extreme loud. The service was awesome, our server was attentive and checked up on us multiple times even though it seemed fully booked and busy. If you request sitting in the pit/near the samurai outfit, do not wear a skirt/wear a long skirt, it was difficult entering the seating. read more

Quality, fresh sushi and enjoyed the variety of rolls on their menu. Shared some gyoza and the crème brûlée. Both were very good. See was great as well. What a gem! There was no wait, and the entrance is absolutely gorgeous! It's a long bamboo walkway with soft lights that sets the mood right away. The decor inside is just as impressive, with a calm, modern vibe. The service was excellent and everyone was so kind and attentive. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. My chicken and salmon teriyaki came in a bento-style box that made the whole meal feel extra special. They even made our daughter a custom cucumber-wrapped sushi roll, which was such a thoughtful touch. All the sushi dishes were excellent. Amazing ambiance, great service, and unforgettable food. Honestly not having the best experience. We were told a 15-20 minute wait and after about 30 we checked in- and they completely skipped us and put us in a section that was forgotten about (not just us but 3 other tables as well). It took a host to come over and see if our server has even been by. We've been here for an hour and a half, and after 45 minutes we still are just sitting with an empty appetizer plate- no food or drink refills in sight. Heard great things and the server is nice when she remembers we exist. You would think being a Friday night they'd have a full staff. It was actually a little hard to find this place. however, we saw the red awning and cool bamboo lined pathway with Japanese like light fixtures and knees we found it. The place is quaint, but old and needs a good cleaning. they need to lift up the glass on the tables and clean under them. Service was thoughtful. Be careful as parking can be a problem--none for just pick up. Prices were more than fair. The food is the hit! We had spring rolls to start. Finished off with chicken & fried rice & chicken & shrimp combination. Both very good. One problem, when you get it home, it's NOT hot. From 2019: Sitting at the Sushi Bar - it is nice to interact with the chefs, but the server was very very pushy and was in a rush. I'll deal with that the next time as the food was worth the trip. We go back often and sit at the bar and I have to ignore the waiters. The food is as good of Sushi as you will find in the HHI area and the decor/setting is fine. Just don't expect Big City Sushi. Overall the sushi was good, the fish was fresh, the rice was soft yet firm, and the wasabi that is way paired with was excellent. The only issue with it was that the seaweed lacked the texture it usually needs to complete sushi. The noodles in the dishes were all nice and some of the broths were a bit rich but still delicious. The service was pretty good, the employees were very kind and liked to make your experience great. An employee cracked a joke and it gave us a good laugh. Nicely hidden away, this is a local spot that been around for 20+ years. The service was good and the sushi was decent, they forgot the spicy sauce so our spicy tuna roll was just a tuna roll. The soup base for the miso soup, hot Japanese noodle and the Tonkatsu was too salty. If it was not this would be a pretty good meal. We really loved this place. My boyfriend and I came in for dinner, hoping to sit in the sunken tables but unfortunately the couple before us got the last available one. The specials that day sounded delicious, both for the appetizer and the entrees. We ordered a lot of the specials and really enjoyed them! Unfortunately it was a few months ago, I don't remember what they were. But the food was really good! If I could give this place more than five stars, I would. This hidden gem is one of our favorite stops on the island. The food never disappoints. This is the sushi I crave. It is smaller bites that focus on the flavor of the fish. If you're hoping for massive rolls for a good price - this is not the place for you. If you want more authentic and good quality that you pay a little more for - bingo. I've never been to Japan but the ambience and food in total make me think this is as close as I'll get. My husband and I came for dinner last night without a reservation. At first, the hostess mentioned it could be a 1 hour to 45 min wait but luckily we only waited about 30 minutes. The restaurant is nice and clean with a good amount of tables. From what I could see, the tables were spaced apart so if you're weary about dining in, they've done a good job of distancing customers. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, I ordered the Ichi Roll and Rainbow Roll, and my husband ordered one of their sashimi plates. Our mussels took a while to arrive, close to 30-40 mins after we ordered. Which is why I docked a star. Otherwise, the food was really great! Hinoki exceeded our expectations. Great food. Fantastic service. Phenomenal atmosphere. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. We were visiting Hilton Head from Charlotte, NC where we have plenty of sushi options, but Hinoki topped them all. As soon as we walked in, we were transported to a whole new world. The decor and lighting made the atmosphere feel very authentic. Between tatami style tables and samurai armor on display, every detail brought the restaurant to life. Comfort food on a rainy evening is what I was seeking and found it here. Follow the awning covered walkway to the front door of this gem. It is off the beaten path but that's what makes it special. Steamed dumplings came out warm and satisfied my craving for comfort food and allowed me plenty of time to go through the menu. Settled on one basic roll and one different to me roll. The shrimp tempura roll was as expected. Delicious and fresh. I could have used another order of the tempura roll. The spicy tuna box was incredible. Square sushi hence the word box. Gosh was fresh and plentiful. Sandwiched between rice and masago. Portion was more than enough and the spice was just enough. The menu is definitely tailored to the seasonal visitors who want to try sushi. A bit more adventurous or a seasoned sushi lover should ask for the specials which are written on the white board by the sushi bar. Service was friendly without being too much. I will start with the good things. We ordered the shitake tempura and the isobe tuna (raw tuna wrapped in seaweed and lightly battered). Not bad. The Isobe sauce was light and the tuna tasted fairly fresh. Now for the bad part. The rest of the meal was really disappointing. We ordered two other sushi rolls but they were sadly COVERED in mayo and other sauce. Covered so much I couldn't taste the fish, which makes me suspicious of the freshness. Also, we ordered one of the teriyaki boxes. Vegetables overcooked to mush, and rice was not short grain sushi rice. I don't recommend this place. The next night I went to CharBar, which had fabulous rolls, nicely balanced. read more

The atmosphere and ambiance is exquisite. I have always ignored my dietary challenges because I fear it stopped me from eating the best foods. The chef overheard that I had a gluten intolerance and sent me something gluten free on the house and it did not disappoint. *make sure you express your dietary challenges because you might miss out on amazing food you didn't even know existed! If you ever get the pleasure to meet George, you are lucky indeed! Everything on the menu is absolutely delicious. What made matters even better is knowing that the chef's son also does a magnificent job with the food. Although they are actually family, they make YOU feel like family. They give the best drink and food recommendations and even down to the fellow customers... they've advised me to get some of the best food! (Which I continued to get each time I went) adding something new each time. You will leave with a full tummy and smile on your face if you visit Hinoki, this I guarantee. They only let me give 5 stars, but I would have given more if I could. After moving away from Hilton Head, Hinoki is one of the things I miss most! I haven't dared step foot in another place that serves sushi since, because I don't think they could ever do Hinoki justice. Will not spend much time on this review. Absolutely horrible service (Elvira N) - not just our table, but many others. We are local - second time we have been there in a month and it seems to be going downhill. Can't blame COVID as other restaurants on the island such as Jane provide top-notch and friendly service with great food. The staff here seems to have a "eat it and get out attitude". We used to come here often, but Elvira has changed that program. Please clean the carpets, restrooms and plates. Very dirty- Food? They seem to be adding more rice to the sushi rolls and less fish.
