Great accommodation for our party of 17 in the private room. The room is very tranquil but everyone is required to spend $15(not a problem) or a room charge is incurred. Been hawking this place on here and the reviews are always so good. I don't get into Richardson very often. Tonight, we finally decided on this place. Atmosphere is really nice. You get the whole hot towel treatment and all. We ordered the sashimi sampler, a few rolls and some toro. Be aware that "MKT" for the toro, tonight at least, was $10 a piece. Service time is normal for a sushi place. Perfection takes time. And, I prefer all my order come at once anyway. The sushi here is really good. Is it Edoku? No. But, it is really good. The sashimi sampler was extremely good. The tuna, salmon and yellowtail all melted in your mouth. The two pieces of toro sushi I received, while a bit small, was rich as butter. Amazing!! The snow crab was really sweet and tasted great too. Our rolls were good. A little loosely packed for my liking but good. I especially liked the scallop roll. The spicy tuna wasn't spicy at all but very good nevertheless. The rainbow roll was a little disappointing for the money. All in all a great meal with great company. SUSHI SAKE in the suburb of Richardson has been touted as "best of.." by the Dallas Guide (alongside such names as Nobu) for as long as I remember, and having been to both I prefer Sushi Sake any day In this case Location does not determine popularity, as SUSHI SAKE is a stand alone restaurant hidden from highway 75 on Collins and Campbell but don't let this fool you. Word of mouth has ensured that you will have a small wait on weekends here. They don't take reservations here unless you want the private Tatami rooms in the back for 6 or more people so the wait can be long on popular nights. The rather plain exterior was reminiscent of restaurants in Japans suburbs ..Plain brown with simple hanging curtains above the doorway. On entering the doors I was taken aback with how busy this place was and the simple elegance of the décor. Modern yet traditional seems an oxymoron yet SUSHI SAKE managed to fuse those two styles perfectly from the large curved sushi bar flanked by bright coloured sake barrels and (to my amusement) porcelain lucky cats smiling moronically from above. The rest of the tables were bench style with cushions on the seats. Designed to seat four or six, so be ready to share a table with another couple during busy times. If you do opt for the back Tatami room rest easy in the knowledge that the floor has been "scooped out" allowing for easier seating for our less flexible western legs! The lighting was candlelit and romantic and the waitresses all dressed in traditional Japanese dress (even though our waitress was Chinese) Ambience alone scored this place brownie points in my head so I waited with baited breath hoping the food wouldn't let it down. It didn't disappoint ! The menu was noticeably absent of most pimped out rolls you find at more Western geared joints and its focus was on more simple and traditional foods. The Sake list was impressive and served in the wooden box (typically overfilled) style. We started with edamame ( $3.50) and gyoza (pork dumplings..$4.50) which I didn't eat but apparently they were very good as our dinner mates promptly ordered another plate of the same dumplings My Sashimi mix was fresh and fleshy and presented beautifully ($15). Hubby had the tempura and cold soba ($13.50) and whilst good couldn't compare to the same dish eaten in Tokyo recently. Our friends ordered a selection of sushi from the separate menu and all of it was fresh and delicious. This included the stunning rainbow rolls and a hand rolled (ice-cream cone looking) sushi roll. I guess I've grown a lot or experienced a lot more in the past 3 years. I'm sorry to say this is not by far the best sushi in Texas as stated in my 2013 review. I have a few bones to pick after my recent visit: 1) The sushi menu is very limited. A handful of fish without any of the exotics. 2) The daily specialty items such as the beef tongue was dry and cold, the sauteed mushrooms were delicious but that's because you only taste the butter smothering the mushroom mix, and the $18 piece of cod appetizer is delicious but literally 4 small bites. I have followed Soda-san since his days at Nakamoto up in Plano. In fact, he made the first sushi I'd ever eaten -- 20 years ago! Thankfully, Soda-san struck out on his own and created Sushi Sake in Richardson. I've tried many sushi spots in north Texas and I always come home like the prodigal son. And Soda-san always welcomes me and has a feast waiting for me. (As a resident of Richardson, I am very thankful for this excellent dining establishment.) The food consistently superb -- the place is spotless. Fantastic selection of quality sake. The waitstaff is superb. Nice minimalist touch in the interior. Dont like raw fish? Wow, another restaurant with incredibly overinflated ratings. This place is good, however it's NOT the BEST SUSHI IN DALLAS or anything close to it. When the place is busy they suggest table sharing, which isn't a problem for single patrons, but groups of 4 and larger can't really be asked to do this. The menu is full of Japanese treats and they even give you S & B Sansho Japanese Pepper for certain dishes or if you ask for it. Some of the Japanese beers are not true imports, but the common super market variants that are brewed by recipe in North America. If I'm spending $7 a beer I'd like the true Export version please. The sake prices are hugely ridiculous, making it nearly impossible not to do their 3 shots of sake for $15 deal if you're in the mood for it. The chance to sample 3 premium Sakes is an interesting option, though I would prefer more traditional serving vessels. There are a lot of things I like about Sushi Sake, their side dishes of traditional Japanese pickled cucumbers are great, but I just don't find their sushi absolutely as fresh as it could be, or their portions as generous as I would demand for the price. However they do have Tamagoyaki and other very authentic Japanese staples, so overall it's a pleasing experience, but please excuse all of the "BEST IN DALLAS" insanity pleas. read more

The best sushi place in Dallas. The service may sometimes (not too often) be a miss but it's always made up by the food. Sushi or sashimi or rolls are as good as it gets: fresh, well crafted and executed and authentic. If you sit at the sushi bar ask for chef's favorite and you might be surprised with something not on the menu or special list (e.g. avocado salad). If you don't mind meat try Niku tofu with side of steamed rice - best combination of beef, tofu, vegis and broth I've ever tried. read more

I explained I did not wish to eat a bowl of grease but because it was "made right" they refused to take it off the bill and wanted me to purchase something else. What?! 5 stars for the food... But 2 stars for the service that we received tonight. We have been going to this place for a while. Have always sat in the "main dinning area". Tonight we entertain our out of town guests with a party 9 and sat in the party room. We all agreed that we would get better service at Mc Donald. The bill was almost $500 which included a 20% (mandatory) gratuity charge. We have counted we saw our server 6 times during the night when she brought us our foods for which she had never asked us how was everything or say anything other than naming the items. So just remember ... DO NOT sit in the party room... You will mandatory to pay 20% tips and receive 2% service. Some of the freshest sushi in town without a doubt. This is a sushi lover's paradise. We came here for a girl's night out since we were in the area...got there close to 9pm on a Weds and man was the place packed! After a waiting a few minutes we finally got our table. Beautiful ambiance, with fresh roses as a décor at every table. Great room in the back for groups 6 or more with waitresses dressed in geisha outfits. We ordered a few rolls, salmon & smoked nigiri, spicy tuna and eel rolls. All were yummy. I ordered some ponzu sauce on the side that was very tasty with the sushi. They do not do a lot of specialty rolls which is fine by me because I am very traditional with my sushi selection...they do sushi like it should be done! I believe it is priced correctly for the combination of food, service, and atmosphere. If you're willing to sacrifice on one of the three, you can save some cash by going elsewhere. Genroku is nearby and can match Sushi Sake in taste, but lacks the classic atmosphere. Be sure to check the chalkboard for specials. We loved the Beef-Asparagus roll. Sake, soup, and sushi for two was $67 before tip. You can pay a lot more for a lot less, but there are cheaper alternatives in the neighborhood. read more

When we told her we had specifically ordered udon, she said she heard soba and that she COULD NOT TAKE IT BACK. hahahahaha... i laugh with tears b/c I've never heard of this rule in a restaurant. I love sushi. No lie. And there is good sushi and bad sushi, and so so sushi. For me, so-so is what I get at the grocery store (HEB in Austin). BAd... what you might find on a buffet. Good, a number of places in Austin are good, if not great. Then, there is awesome. Awe-inspiring. Sushi Sake of Richardson has such sushi. No crazy, signature rolls on the menu, no fufu drinks. Just plain, honest-to-goodness fantastic sushi and rolls. I had the Sushi B combo along with a Cali roll. The white tuna practically melted in my mouth. The texture, the portions, the speed of our food's arrival... top notch. Service was fantastic as well. The last time I was offered a hot towel when I sat down was a lucky upgrade to first class many moons ago. The wait staff was attentive (but not too much) yet unobtrusive, as if they could sense the precise moment when we'd need a plate cleared or a refill. If you live near here, I envy you. I worked in NYC for many years, good sushi is very easy to find. Dallas, not so much. It's understandable because of the geography. My first few months living here I was devastated that I couldn't find a very good sushi place where you can tastes the freshness of the fish. Then a friend took me out here to this gem of a restaurant, Sushi-Sake. The décor is perfect for a high quality sushi joint, I love the touch of the large Ozeki sake barrels that partition the restroom area and the lucky cats along the top of the bar makes me crack a smile. The seating isn't the most ideal, as the majority of the tables have seats with no backs, so you can't lean back and stretch out after stuffing your face. On the blackboard behind the bar there is always a great selection of specials and fresh catches listed. The Dynamite role was the first piece of food I've ever had a dream about. It's not exactly a roll, and it's not precisely sushi either. It's scallops heated with spicy mayo, rice and a few other ingredients I forget. This, in my humble opinion, is a culinary masterpiece. The staff is always very friendly, accommodating and mindful of making sure your sake pitcher isn't empty. That alone deserves five stars. read more

The one truth about Sushi, after its eternal greatness, is that it is an acquired taste. I can personally speak from first hand experience that I would quiver at the mere mention of Sushi and the picture of raw food that came to mind. But I must say Sushi Sake is where everything just seem to fall in place. It seems a stretch to compare the the event at Sushi Sake to other life changing instance but it truly is such and event. The food is always fresh. You have a common stereotype that food from Sushi restaurants are usually flown in daily but only at Sushi Sake does this actually seem true. The customer service is impeccable. People are sanding by just to make sure you are OK, even if they are not your own waiter. You get a true feeling of the Japanese culture and ambiance because the decor is so excellently chosen. This is one of my favorite restaurants, ever. I have been to quite a few sushi places around the metroplex, and this place takes the cake, hands down. The quality of food is fantastic, the sushi chefs and staff are always very friendly to us, and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. I almost always sit at the sushi bar, but I do love the "sharing tables" idea because we love to chat it up with strangers. I love the quality of fish here, its always fresh with no fishy aftertaste, tuna and salmon especially, melts in your mouth like butter! Snow crab is always sweet, unagi is just awesome, and uni- well uni is like the ocean in your mouth. Intense in a good way! We always order food off the regular menu too, udon, tofu, etc., and have never been disappointed. The prices are really fair for the quality of the food. I always feel completely satisified afterwards and I've been to countless places where when I got the bill, I felt that the price wasn't justified. I never feel "dinner remorse" after eating here. Granted this isn't like a lot of the other places where they make a lot of rolls, i.e. crunchy roll, or Dorito roll. I feel like rolls like that are a westernized version of sushi, which I don't prefer. If you like straight up great sushi, I highly recommend that you try this place if you're in the neighborhood. The wait wasn't that long for a Friday night (20 minutes). I was impressed how lively but at the same time how intimate the setting was which really makes a great date night! I was here two weeks ago with my friends from denver because I heard this place is good. We were there around 8:30 pm on saturday night. I understand that servers there were having a tiring day because it was still packed at that time but we didnt get to ask for our drinks until we had to actually call someone for it. Well, that was understandable but they did not check up on our drinks or our food and we had to look for servers continuously. Us four spent 250 dollars on our dinner that night and not even one server came to us on their own. Foods were delicious though. We had hamachi kama. I met a friend here for lunch. The atmosphere is calming with the dimly lit dining area. Not a huge fan of the bench style seating that surrounded the restaurant. I would have opted for the tables with the chairs that had backs or even the sushi bar but the place was packed. The sushi came out above my expectations and taste buds. Sashimi was spot on. The Nabeyaki Udon took a slight hit though. This style of udon is supposed to be served piping hot, which mine came out lukewarm. The kamamoko looked/tasted like it was freshly thawed from the freezer. I would recommend Genroku which is less than ten minutes away for Udon. However, I don't know many people who are Udon fans so for the sushi experience, this is the best place within a 10-15 mile radius. read more

Anyone who says this place has the best sushi in Dallas just hasn't tried the better sushi place(s) in Dallas. It's very good sushi, but it's just not the best. Traditional, authentic Japanese style sushi and other dishes are a definite plus, and the chefs are all very well trained and make sushi very aesthetically pleasing along with being delicious. It's hard to gripe about Sushi Sake but there are a couple things I will say: Table service is only OK. Wait staff is friendly, but not always the most knowledgeable. Sitting at the sushi bar is a much better experience. Also, I don't know who designed the layout of this place, but they got everything right except for one thing: the table sizes. Most of the tables seat 6 people. What kind of strange number is that? The result is that sometimes you'll end up sharing a table with a couple random people (since the restaurant gets pretty busy and they want to use up all available seats). When I lived in Japan there are a lot of places where aiseki is just something you have to deal with, given the tight premium on space. But we're in Texas, there shouldn't be a need for that, except for the fact that someone decided 6-person tables was optimum. Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox, but overall I do enjoy Sushi Sake and have never had a bad meal here. I would have given it 5 stars except the layout of the tables, and one rather unpleasant experience when we asked for a particular table because my grandfather was 95 (or so at the time) and had difficulty getting into some of their tables, but were summarily rejected because they wanted to save the table in case a larger party would come later (there wasn't any reservation for that table, they just wanted to keep it open....just in case) read more

Not your typical Japanese restaurant, and I mean that in a good way. The restaurant is hidden among some office buildings but the inside makes you feel like you're actually in Japan. Waitresses are dressed in kimonos and the seating is very Japanese-like. It took about half an hour or so before we got seated. Prices were a little bit pricey but definitely very fair. Among the four of us, we got gyoza, hotategai butteryaki (scallops sauteed in butter), grilled hamachi kama (grilled yellowtail collar), sashimi mix, salmon shioyaki (fresh salmon grilled with sea salt), and volcano roll with scallops. My favorites were the buttered scallops, sashimi, and the volcano roll. The buttered scallops were very flavorful and I highly recommend it as it was probably our table's overall favorite dish. People were not kidding when they said the sashimi melts in your mouth...it is the most mouthwatering sashimi that will enter your mouth. As for the volcano roll, it's a bit different than your normal volcano roll in other Japanese restaurants. You can choose to get it with crawfish or scallops. I'm sure either way, they will both be good! Sadly, the grilled yellowtail and salmon were not up to my expectations and they were the ones that I was most excited about (aside from the sashimi). They were good, even great, but personally, they tasted like something I could've gotten elsewhere at a "less authentic" Japanese restaurant for a cheaper price. Very ordinary to me. If you're looking for the ultimate Japanese experience, this is the place to go. The menu offers a lot of different varieties of Japanese entrees you probably never knew anything about, and it's guaranteed you will get the best service and quality of food. Refreshing to have authentic Japanese food, nestled in Richardson. We all were there for a bachlorette party (10 of us) and sat in the tatami room. The intersting surpirise was that there was that instead of it just seating on the floor there was a cut-out where we could rest our legs underneath the table. No charlie horse here! The service was fine, progressive. The server was very accomadating. and now the appetizers.. you have your usual suspects.. edamame, miso soups, beef skewers,and tiny fried crabs. It has the right vibe and decor for a sushi bar....so they really did a great job with that. The staff was also very friendly, which is a plus. So, for the actual food, I'm kinda meh. The scallops in butter we had for the appetizer was great, no complaints there. The chicken bento box I got was the definition of yawn inducing. Bland teriyaki chicken with zero seasoning when they grilled it, some pieces of it dry. The rest of the box was some standard tempura stuff. One shrimp and a few vegetables. Tempura batter had next to no flavor. Also came with a California roll which could have easily came from the grocery store. The presentation was really nice though, the bento boxes they use are beautiful. A shame the contents sucked. My wife got a mixed variety of sashimi, as usual. It was good, but it wasn't anything I haven't eaten elsewhere and didn't warrant the price. This place is certainly a little more elevated in cost. Standard rolls are $1-3 more than at other sushi places. I will say, they do appear to have a fresh daily selection of seafood that's not typical written on their chalkboard behind the bar. Great sushi with attentive service! Our dinner Saturday night was absolutely delicious! Our server quickly took our drink order as she brought us warm towels. We ordered the gyoza dumplings, beef tataki, spider roll, and California roll to start. Everything was perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented but of course the spider roll was my favorite. Next we ordered the niki tofu and it was a very generous portion and cooked perfectly. The shrimp tempura was good but I'll skip it next time and order the Louisiana roll. We were seated at the sushi bar since it was very crowded at 6:45 and I asked for first available. We had a great time watching the sushi chefs but next time I'll wait just a bit for a table. Sushi was surprisingly fresh, Service was on point, I really have nothing to critique in a negative way for this establishment. How could could you rate a restaurant that did everything they were supposed to and some more? I could not know. Any hows, I love the design that they went with here on their sushi restaurant. I also like their sushi bar even though I did not dine at that section and also the fact that this sushi place had separate expos and water fillers actually surprised and gladden me for the most part, mainly because of the size of the restaurant. Coming from Plano, this place seems of obscure, tucked behind a bunch of hotels and office buildings, but don't let that concern you. This place is always packed and for good reason - the experience is worth getting a little lost for. The menu is a compilation of izakaya style small plates, sushi/sushi combos, and coursed dinners with soup and salad. There is a large L-shaped sushi. bar along with bench seating, some of which are large enough to sit communal style. I would recommend always perusing the specials board first - fresh catch sushi, chef's specials, etc. are posted there and change often. The first time we came here, we had sushi and a couple of small plates and enjoyed it so much we came back. We brought the kiderinos the second time and got to taste udon, steak dinner, and a chirashi bowl along with a few small plates. Hubs loved his teriyaki steak - perfectly cooked. I thought the chirashi bowl was good and the portion right priced however they top their rice with this sweet mushroom mix that I didn't care for. Udon was...udon. Good but not the best we've had. The reason I can't give it 5 stars is because of some of the pricing. Saki prices are crazy - $15 per glass crazy - and they serve it in these wooden boxes that are impossible to drink out of without spilling and have an icky mouth feel. Small plates are puny and most are barely shareable which is half the fun of izakaya style pub fare. Over all, however, we'd definitely come back and would recommend. read more
