Genroku Grill is a Taiwanese restaurant in Richardson that has been in the area for years. It's recently removed sushi from the menu, so they now only focus on authentic Taiwanese dishes. This is my updated review. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - You'll find Genroku in the same place it's been for years. Inside, there's a tree - yes a tree. There are a number of tables in the front and larger booths in the back. There's also an a sushi bar - although they no longer serve sushi. I never forget that iconic tree. 1 Star. Service - For an Asian restaurant, service is efficient. Once you are seated a server will take your order. If you're expecting smiles and recommendations, you won't find it here. But you will have youg food brought out quickly and drinks refilled. 1/2 Star. Food - I've been ordering the same dishes here for almost two decades because it's so good. Start with the Salt & Pepper Tofu. Tofu squares are perfectly fried on the outside while maintaining a piping hot soft inside that pairs perfectly with the soy based dip. I also order the Clay Pot Chicken. I read my review from 2013 and I describe it. Thirteen years later it's still super tender, hot, and pairs perfectly with rice. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Not as often since they no longer serve sushi. Full Disclosure - I never at the sushi there, but it was nice that it was an option. But 13 years after my original review I'm still ernjoying the same fantastic dishes... just not as often. 1/2 Star. read more

Ordered online from this restaurant after trying to call without answer. Got notification that order was received and given a pickup time 30 minutes later. However, when I went to pickup, the order had not been acknowledged. The manager initially tried to deflect the blame and say that I should have called (which I did and no answer) and later accused that we had just placed the order until I showed them the timestamp. Only then did she apologize. We asked for a refund as the order had not processed but were told a refund was not possible. Ridiculous! Don't offer online ordering if your workflow can't keep up. This is always my favorite place for salt & pepper tofu. And when there's a slight char, it's even more delicious. For those that like periwinkle meat, their basil and periwinkle stir fry is amazing! FOOD - Stir fried vegetable with beef - The beef had great flavor with the sauce and the leafy vegetable was cooked great. It was tasty and crunchy. Great ingredients and cooking! - Salt and Pepper Tofu - the tofu was in small pieces which allowed for the tofu to be super crispy when fried. It had great flavor and the onions on top were super sweet and yummy. - Fried Flounder with Salt and Pepper - The fried flounder was also very crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside where the meat of the fish was. The onions had that great pan-fried flavor and were sweet. The onions were actually so yummy and made the dish soooo yummy. - Basil Eggplant + Chicken - I haven't had eggplant before in this style but it was pretty good. The dish came out steaming hot and it was soft eggplant with thin strips of chicken. Pretty great flavor overall! - Crispy Fried Pork Intestine - This dish was super crispy and well cooked. Not a very common dish to people who aren't fan of eating intestines but definitely worth trying because it is tasty! VIBES Genroku is a great restaurant for families. It definitely has a comfy feeling with the round lazy-susan tables and the yellower lighting. The decorations are a mix of Japanese/Chinese/Taiwanese influence which was pretty cool. Most of the customers at the time we went were older or families. SERVICE Service was great. The man who helped serve us was super sweet and was super patient. A co-worker recommended we try this place, and we were glad he did! We started with the beef rib special. There were five ribs and the meat on the bone was generous and with great flavor. Then we also tried their volcano roll (Friday night special) which had a different presentation from how we've had it in other restaurants, and it was also delicious. My husband had the Beef with Broccoli. While it had great flavor, it was heavy on the amount of onions in the dish and he wasn't expecting them to begin with given the description on the menu. I had the Basil Chicken (no bones option) at my co-workers encouragement and I can see why it was a favorite. Great flavor of the sauce and it is served in a stone like bowl that keeps it warm and really lets the flavors come together. We enjoyed a warmed sake with our dinner as well. Our server was friendly and great at suggesting options for us to consider. The ambiance is pretty traditional and casual. I went with people who have been going to the restaurant for a long time. Many of the workers have been there for ages and it has a local neighborhood vibe. With that said, my second time visiting was about as bad as the first. The food has sooooo much grease and it's just bland and flavorless. The interior has not aged well and the place feels dirty. Don't let the name fool you--Genroku Sushi & Grill has some of the most authentic Chinese food in the DFW area. It's also my family's favorite restaurant to come to because their food is consistent, and we're friendly with the manager and waiters! Oh my my my this is our favorite sushi place in the Dallas area, perhaps of all. We have been coming here for so many years we have lost count of how long. Our daughter has grown up coming here many Sunday's for lunch when they have the dollar sushi. And Ethan is extremely talented along with doing whatever is needed to make the food spectacular and gluten-free of to your preference of tastes, all with a smile. This place has been around and I've been a few times in my life and the food has always been subpar. Fast forward to post-pandemic where everything cost many times more but I feel like I'm getting quality food here. The $16+ sushi roll meal I had here was the most unsatisfying work lunch in a long time. I think I could have gotten more quantity and quality sushi roll for half he price at Asian super market. What a refreshing experience! My husband and I stumbled in here when the wait was too long at another restaurant nearby. I'm so glad we did. Service was so lovely, and the quality of the ingredients was obvious. The sushi was super fresh and perfectly cut. We did one roll and the peppered tuna tataki (SO GOOD!) one of the employees accidentally cleared my plate before I had the chance to eat the last piece, and the owner was gracious enough to bring us more out. It was very generous of her! We ordered a pork and rice bowl, as well. We were told by the owner it is an authentic Taiwanese dish and difficult to find in other restaurants. The flavors were well developed and deep. I have been dreaming of that bowl since that day! Cant wait to go back and have it again and try more things from the menu. But the pork chop over rice... the pork chop taste like taro in taste and texture like almost rotten meat. I couldn't finish it. How can people do people like this don't they know there is Yelp? Difficult to rate this place because it's a Chinese food joint somehow also serving sushi rolls. You'd guess something's up. Rolls are much cheaper than those in a sushi restaurant, but the portion size and fish quality are significantly lower. Chinese food quality is just so-so, and some recipes do raise an eyebrow.
