This is a pretty nice sushi restaurant but because I was in a time crunch and had some credits, I ordered Uber eats from this place for a takeout order. I got the tako taco and the spicy tuna aburi 3 pc. The tako taco was good with the octopus, and a nicely crunchy outer shell but there was not much flavor present in the shell aside from the fried dough. The aburi was good but they are pretty small pieces. I got the food and consumed immediately, but the crispy rice was not actually that crispy but it did still carry forward a nice flavor. The seafood is pretty fresh and the food came out quick, so not much complaints about that. read more

Came here for dinner. It was a full house. The restaurant was packed. It was very dark in there. We order 4 sushi rolls and only got 3 of them. We had to ask about the 4th one. The rolls were good. They all had a unique taste that we've never had before. The chicken nuggets weren't my favorite. It was mostly batter. While the taste was good i wish it was meatier. Amazing service and vibes! Came for a dinner date and was seated surprisingly quick for what seemed to be more than a 30 minute wait but I think we got lucky it was just a party of 2 and they had an opening on the shared table tops. Food came out pretty fast too! We ordered a Deluxe Nigiri 12 piece set, matcha octopus nigiri, beef n bop, and a Yuzu yellowtail and Kabayaji eel sushi roll! This was enough for 2 people. I thought the sashimi was really fresh and the sushi rolls were delicious. Each nigiri piece came with some wasabi already applied onto the rice so be careful if you cannot handle wasabi! The eel roll came with less eel than expected though and I think the flavor was more prominent in the yuzu yellowtail roll which made it my preferred of the two. The beef n bop was really good!! It looks small, but it can be quite filling! Amazing experience! Despite being fully booked, they let us squeeze in the bar seating on the terms that we would be out in an hour. This was no problem thanks to the attentive and quick service! Our server, George, was wonderful and made sure we got everything we wanted without making us feel rushed. Started off with the Thank you, Enjoy #4 to drink- we loved the little to-go box it came in & the drink itself was actually great! I had the seaweed salad to start, and I will say that it's very different than a typical seaweed salad. Unless you like the texture of large seaweed leaves, maybe skip this one. The inside is dimly lit and has various tables - bar seating, high tops, booths, and regular tables. Service is great and understanding. If you come with a group, you can easily split a check with their QR code and pay for your item. I find that convenient and efficient! Food is high quality - both hot items and sushi selections. However, you may take a while for your food to be delivered due to their busyness. My favorite I got were the appetizers - Shrimp tempera and Togarashi Chicken Nuggets. Both were made well done with the right amount of crispiness and their side of SAUCES. I opted for the sushi and sashimi choice. It also comes with seaweed salad and miso soup. The sashimi was good, comes with tuna, hamachi, and salmon. I also tried the honey gochujang shrimp. Okinawa Sugar Pie?! I know this is a sushi place, but wow you have to try the dessert. I was blown away by its melty, yet crumbly texture. Overall, this is an excellent happy hour place if you happen to work or live downtown. The sushi rolls aren't too pricey during this time. Oftentimes with preset menus and prices the quality and portion of the food declines because the kitchen are less motivated to make the components of the meal stand out. The piece of salmon I got was tiny (see photo). The good thing was that the chef was kind enough to notice that and give me another piece. We also didn't get wasabi or ginger for our sushi? Very trendy spot in River North. This is a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant and we went for an occasion. Definitely have a reservation, otherwise you're going to be stuck waiting for a long time. The service was great and our server was very helpful in having us choose what we want. The food was fantastic! The quality, the presentation, the taste, the everything about it. It's great quality sushi in the middle of a hotspot area in Chicago. This is definitely worth coming for. The miso soup was spot on, and they had Uni that didn't taste gross. Their rolls are not too stuffed with rice, either. You are getting what you actually paid for. I definitely recommend getting a Japanese beer, but they have fancy drinks, too. Oof this was bad enough that we had to leave a review. We love ramen San and regularly go for lunch and dinner so we were excited to see what LEY had cooked up in sushi San. Unfortunately, the only thing that was cooked was our wallet. We went with the server recommendations and everything fell flat. The egg plant tempura tasted like ... breading that had been baked. The Brussels sprouts had no seasoning and we had to dunk them in soy sauce to get flavor. We got a Peking duck rice dish and there were bones cost $20+ and lacked flavor. There was maybe a cup of food served to us. It was bland and cold even though it came out 15 minutes after our other selections. The hand roll came out with... no soy. And then there was no sauce at the table. We got small bowls of sauce ... 5 minutes after we ate our hand rolls. The server recommended the Peking duck sizzling rice. I was intrigued and maybe we should have avoided a Chinese / Japanese mash up at a sushi place. But we didn't and man the dish was bad. We found bones in the dish the hard way. I doubt that was intentional. There was no flavor to be found in the whopping single cup (yes a proper cup) sized serving in a flaming hot bowl. Despite the containers heat the contents were like warm. Seriously it was like a troll dinner and in retrospect I'm annoyed we even paid. The nigiri was flavorful but... there was some umami on the fish that we didn't expect. It was interesting but not worth $35. I also am no sushi chef but I'm pretty sure it's a bit sacrosanct for your nigiri to be slathered in unknown sauces. Generally shouldn't sushi eschew sauces that may mask the freshness of the fish? The beers... man anyone who has been to ramen San and enjoys a lager has hopefully tried the Asahi super dry served ice cold. We first had it on a stifling hot summer day after doing demo at our new home all day. When we showed up to ramen San tired and achy the ice cold rice lager hit our lips and we fell madly in love. The lager was ice cold yet still incredibly flavorful and refreshing. I was so stoked to see the same lager on the sushi San menu. At ramen San you can get an extra large mug but here there were no options. Still we figured for $10 we would get a pint or near equivalent. Instead we got a half pint and to paraphrase zoolander we immediately thought "what is this? A beer for ants?" These were tiny mugs that are better suited to chugging. And i think they were $10 or $12. That stupid beer with tax and tip cost nearly $13 for 8 oz of beer! We aren't skinflints and gladly pay for quality but this place was just a bunch of "nah." Nah pricing. Nah quality. Nah service. Maybe it was an off night but that beer price is insulting and is a perfect microcosm of everything wrong with the place. A nice cocktail at gibsons is marginally more expensive and crafted by a bartender. Our beer was dumped into a tiny mug and brought to our table. Our food tasted like it was premade and dumped lazily into bowls and brought out chaotically without thought or care for utensils or sauces. The most annoying thing is that it's clear the chef aspired that Our dishes could be features on a tasting menu but they were so haphazardly served that they came out incoherently and fell flat. In sum it sucked. Bad. We paid our $200 tab for basically nothing good and headed to chic fil a for a dessert to salvage the dining experience for the night. The place is a vibe but feels like a wannabe ramen San that just isn't as cool. It could be - we loved the moody lighting and industrial furniture ... but the food and service get an F. Get new chefs, throw out the menu, and don't be clownish with portions. That beer pricing alone is unforgivable. I'm sure some frat would gladly take those mugs from you and as penance you need to donate them to the boys or at least a home for the elderly. Very impressive sushi joint just steps away from my hotel the moxy, extensive menu items we had the spicy tuna roll which came with spicy mayo and was super fast impressive, I had the Asahi on draft which gives a massive thumbs up for any restaurant with a Asahi draft machine, the miso soup was a little salty, the ginger was also a little too sweet for our taste, we also had the hamachi yellowtail jalapeño sashimi special which was great for the price but wasn't the best one I've tasted. Service was fast quick but was very busy so it took a while to get a order in. The shrimp tempura roll was good they use a unique version of tempura which is slightly different than your average shrimp tempura roll. The Madai nigiri was especially delicious very high marks. It was next to the biggest size and with 2-3 apps it was enough for 4 people. We also had the sake bombs here. The yuzu one was delicious! Ordered the express lunch for $19 - came with miso soup, salad, a small rice bowl with your protein of choice, and a sushi roll of your choice. I got the miso salmon rice bowl and spicy salmon roll. The spicy salmon roll was pretty good - nice piece of fresh salmon and rice cooked to perfection. Salad was good too. Unfortunately the miso soup was too salty and the piece of miso salmon was quite small for the amount given compared to the miso salmon rice bowl at Ramen-San, their sister restaurant. I'm so glad we got reservations to eat here. It didn't seem overly crowded for a Sunday, but we opted to eat at 5pm, so that might have played a part. The vibes of the place are really cool - simple but feels upscale. The cocktails are phenomenal. I started with the Kill Dill - a gin-based drink with coconut cream and dill, and then got the Bought Myself Flowers, which came with an ice cube with a flower in it! My husband ordered the Toki A.F. Old Fashioned, which was a brighter Old Fashioned and very easy to drink. We started with the Japanese Eggplant Tempura. I thought this was excellent. I loved how they were cut into sort of spears and lightly fried. It was the perfect about of frying without being greasy. We ordered the Mega set to share. It came with nigiri, sashimi, and two rolls. We honestly loved the nigiri the most, but all of the set was excellent. It's been almost four years since I last stopped by Sushi-San for their omakase experience. I was excited to come back this past Friday for dinner with a few friends. Sadly, no omakase experience this time, but I got to try their nigiri sets. NIGIRI SAN-SET - 32 This comes with 8 nigiris, two of each type of fish: tuna, salmon, yellowtail and zuke salmon. I really like salmon and yellowtail, so this was a great option for me. The soy sauce here was light and sweet which was perfect for sushi. My favorite was definitely the zuke salmon. The yellowtail was a close second! Honestly, the fish quality was fresh and higher end. My only quip is the rice. The ratio of rice and fish was a bit too much and I found that the rice was a bit too sticky for my liking. KANPACHI SASHIMI (2 PC.) - 11 I remember really liking the kanpachi here in 2019 so I got an order of kanpachi sashimi. Still very good, but not sure if it was worth 11.00 for two pieces (and the Chicago food tax is ridiculous) so it's like 15.00 realistically, rip. Between the nigiri san-set and d-luxe nigiri san-set, I had a really hard time choosing. The d-luxe is more of a tuna lover's set (and other premium fish) with 2 pieces of six different cuts. It has an industrial look to it, but is also cozy because of the lighting.
