I've gone to the Division location for over 20 years so I was quite surprised it closed but so happy to be able to get Kani Nigiri, and a spicy mono! These are my favorite sushi dishes anywhere I have ever been in the entire world! There's only a few seats in the new location but as long as I can get a chair I will continue to go! I arrived here at 5pm and explained to the hostess/server that I'm dining alone this evening and immediately she led me to their sushi bar not even asking me where I would prefer to sit down. There was one small group hidden away in a corner enjoying private conversation and the restaurant was completely empty. She seemed concerned when I requested one tiny table meant for one. She said she needed to double check for Reservations and reserved tables. I get it! I hadn't made any reservations. I felt awkward as she made a point of telling me that during weekdays they aren't busy and seating isn't an issue. She said weekends they tend to get busy so I assured her I wouldn't take long to order and leave within the hour. She seemed concerned and said she didn't want me to be rushed but I only wanted maki and wasn't there for alcoholic beverages because I'm not a drinker. She let me pick the comfortable corner table and asked if I wanted bottled water or tap. I asked for tap because I knew bottled water would obviously be pricey. She seemed disappointed with my answer and I said I'm ready to order. I chose coca cola with Grenadine syrup, a side of white rice one order of asparagus maki and one salmon maki. She asked if I'd like any beverages besides my coke and I declined. I said I'd probably order more maki later so she left the menu on my table. It didn't take long before my maki came out. Everything tasted extremely delicious but the portions were miniscule and underwhelming. I'm not used to paying such an exorbitant fee for extremely tiny portions. Thr asparagus maki was $8 and the salmon similarly priced high but the portion sizes were extremely small. Rice and miso soup is sold separately and not as a maki set here. Every item on the menu is a la carte. I was still hungry so against my better judgment I caved in and ordered a spicy octopus maki. I believe this time the owner/manager came to my table with the order and announced that my spicy tuna was ready. I was worried she gave me someone else's order so I told her I had ordered octopus but she stated she meant to say octopus. My bill was exorbitant...close to $50 not including the tip and the coke doesn't include a refill. My server did ask if I'd like another cola but since it's an additional $5 and consists of a small glass full of ice it didn't seem reasonable. After I finished paying my bill I overheard another customer ask for green tea. I had no idea it was an option here or I would have loved a cup. I asked the manager for a future date if green tea is complimentary and she gave me an angry look and asked me why would it be free?! I wasn't trying to be impolite i was simply inquiring about their policies. In Schaumburg all the authentic style Japanese restaurants served little cups of green tea to all their customers so naturally I grew accustomed to the tea being offered. She was so mean-spirited to me that I told her she was acting rude just from my inquiry. She called me rude and so I'm simply sharing my dining experience this evening that went sour. Small portions, extremely expensive food, everything is sold separately from rice to green tea to miso soup. I just wanted a nice self treat this evening this wasn't a good experience and no need to say more. I love dining alone but I hate when restaurants treat women dining solo like unwelcomed guests. I'm not a drinker-- I'm a foodie. I rate restaurants based on dining experiences such as the way I was treated, food quality and portions and presentation. I also review restaurants based on how they treat their customers. Mirai deserves two out of five stars based on the abrupt service. read more

So, like riding a horse, you jump right back on and try another restaurant. Mirai Sushi was way better than are first experience, less money and we left sated. The atmosphere was quite, subdued and the sushi chefs don't really engage with you. The ruckus we're used to on Ventura Blvd (in L.A.) doesn't exist in Chicago. But, our dinner was excellent. We had: * Jalepeno Hamachi Crudup - Excellent * Spicy Tuna Maki - really delicious * Spicy Mono - Great * Orsen Fried Rice - Who woulda thunk I would be having the best fried rice in a Japanese restaurant. I wouldn't have thought so, but, it was! With two super dry Asai Beers, we were good; Everything was really great!!!!! So, I guess, I've gotta let go of my SoCal roots and just immerse myself in where I am at the time. I get it. Sushi wise, Chicago walks to a different drummer than I'm used to. I'm finding that out. What's with all the good reviews? I'm not sure if I'd even consider this place a restaurant. My friend and I should have known better when we were rudely told by the person at the front door that if we were to eat at this restaurant, we would only have strictly one hour to finish our meal. We asked them why and they said it was because there was a big reservation an hour from the time we entered the restaurant. Since there was only two of us, my friend and I, without asking, the person led us to the sushi bar. We saw there was an empty table which we would have preferred to sit at, but the person aggressively told us that we needed to sit at the bar. Since we were hungry and just needed something to eat, we figured it wasn't worth arguing. Therefore, we decided to go ahead and give this place a try despite the one hour time limit. Let me start off by saying this has got to be one of the smallest restaurants I have ever dined in - it felt super cramped and the place did not seem very clean. I would not recommend dining here with a big group (e.g. 5+ people). Prices are absurdly high. I get it - it's Downtown Chicago and this restaurant is in the Magnificent Mile. Also, with current times and inflation, I get it - stuff happens where prices may need to be higher. But this restaurant seems to be taking advantage of their location, scamming customers. How are they scamming? By giving some of the tiniest portions I have ever seen from a sushi restaurant. How is this restaurant able to charge $26 for a small portion of fried rice? While the fried rice itself was delicious I still left feeling hungry. Yikes. Even with a $6 miso soup that didn't seem to help. To make matters funnier, we ended up spending over an hour here because our food took longer than expected to come out. Awesome service if you ask me. It's a beautifully intimate spot with an elegant interior. The food came out quickly and the waifstaff very attentive. The portions in general are quite small. That being said, I found the seaweed salad to be delicious & refreshing. I loved how the salad incorporated 2 different types of seaweed; 1 of which was slightly saltier and more robust. Felt like having some omakase last-minute, so it's incredibly convenient that Mirai Sushi just so happened to be right down the street from my apartment! I went ahead and made a quick reservation on Tock (which required a $10 deposit that was refunded upon check-in) for around opening time, and was promptly seated at the sushi bar/counter. Though omakase is not a specific listing on the menu, you can still request it, and you will be offered two different options- one being a more traditional omakase serving (featuring various sashimi cuts and nigiri) or a more specialized omakase (featuring the special rolls specific to Mirai's menu). I opted for the traditional omakase (10 pieces) just to play it safe, but I wouldn't mind coming back to try the specialized omakase in the future. The traditional omakase I received consisted of: 1) tako (octopus slices, flavored with sea salt and lemon - so no soy was recommended), 2) thinly sliced hirame sashimi (fluke with ponzu and chili), 3) madai nigiri with lemon wedge (japanese snapper, soy recommended), 4) kanpachi nigri (japanese amberjack), 5) akami nigiri (lean bluefin tuna), 6) negi toro nigri (crushed fatty otoro with green onion), 7) ikura nigiri (salmon roe), 8) botan ebi nigiri (sweet shrimp), 9) shiro anago nigiri (sea water eel), and 10) unagi hand roll. The real standouts for me were the two eel pieces (anago and unagi), as well as the fried shrimp head that came with the ikura/botan ebi pieces. (The juiciness combined with the crispiness of the shrimp head was fantastic!) While the rest of the sashimi/nigiri was not bad in terms of freshness and/or flavor, the temperature of the fish was just too cold - it sometimes felt like it came right out of the freezer. The accompanying ginger was excellent, but no fresh wasabi was provided (costs extra on the menu). Unfortunately, they didn't have any uni available that night, so I also ordered an extra piece of otoro nigiri, but wasn't wowed like I usually am with otoro. I would still come back as the location is super convenient, and I'm sure their specialty sushi rolls probably taste pretty good - though for traditional omakase, I would still opt for some of the more renowned omakase restaurants in Chicago (Omakase Yume, for example). read more

We have enjoyed Mirai Sushi over the past 15 years. However, over the past 2 years, the service at Mirai on Meis Van Der Rohe Way has diminished and their prices have gone through the roof. Now the restaurant charges a non-refundable $20 fee for booking the reservation (which they say will be deducted from the bill but in our case it was not). My wife and I ate there last evening and enjoyed our meal of Chef's selection sashimi, the himachi appetizer, and a soft shell crab roll. We ordered martini cocktails for starters. One of the drinks spilled, so we ordered a third martini and shared the cocktail. When the bill came, we were charged the $17 charge for each cocktail as advertised on the menu and then an additional $15 was charged for "filling the cocktail glass up to the rim". I complained after the explanation and called this policy "horse s...t". The "owner" became outraged and told me to never come back again. She seemed very distraught and stressed out and her reaction was totally out of context to the complaint. In business, the old cliche "the customer is always right" seems to have been forgotten by this establishment. So sad. read more

It's tiny so request as reservation. We had to wait a few minutes despite our reservation so they brought some complimentary edame. I always appreciate when a place goes out of its way to be accommodating. The spicy mono is great as is the Mirai sampler. The chicken toragashi is excellent. The rice is good. Stopped in for a quick dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the non-typical sushi menu that was thankfully missing such pedestrian and boring fare like California rolls. I put together my own little omakase menu with the Nigiri Trio (salmon was fantastic), Sakana Carpacccio, Yuke Toro (which was my favorite), Hirame Ponzu and Ike Uni. All were artfully prepared and presented with wonderful, crisp flavors. I was super impressed by Mirai Sushi's Gold Coast location. Just around the corner from my home, it is nice to know that a quality sushi establishment is within arms reach. I absolutely love the design of the dining room here. Yes, it is quite small. However, I believe intimate would be a more appropriate descriptor of the space. It is somewhat dimly lit, and the ambience is quaint, trendy, chic. I was greeted by a warm hostess and sat at the bar along the preparation station as I was dining alone. As this was right at the beginning of dinner rush on a Friday evening, I was lucky to be one of the first persons sat at the bar (within 20 minutes others started filing in). Make a reservation on Opentable to secure your spot! I thought the service here was great. My waiter followed up with me the perfect amount of times throughout my meal, as did the hostess. Given the size of the restaurant, I was secretly demanding great customer service as it's less people to cater to. Mirai did not disappoint on that front. They also didn't disappoint on the cuisine. The spicy mono was incredibly delicious. The tuna tartare was fresh, sweet, and spicy and complimented the savory, spicy octopus. The fried rice was great, however, it would've been perfect if it had more bacon and/or bits of chicken added to the rice as well. My only small complaint overall is that the two sushi masters did not interact with the diners at the bar. This isn't mandatory nor is there a sanction that requires this. However, imagine how esteemed we would've felt had the chefs mingled with the guests that were directly in front of them, watching as they prepared all of the yummies. The service was good and the dishes were prepared promptly. The quality of the fish was much better than most of the other places we have been in the city, but being from Hawaii we have high standards for our sushi. I can't believe I've lived within a few blocks of this place for the past 5 years without trying it! Two things always put me off about the place: the 3 dollar signs and the exclusive-looking, curtained exterior (the latter of which I always took to mean "move along peasant!"). It's now my favorite sushi spot downtown! First thing you notice is the cozy size of this place - it's the size of a studio. On a busy night it can get pretty full, but the longest I've ever had to wait for a table was 5 mins. There is a small private room in one corner that can fit a small group. They have a full bar too, but it's hidden in the back somewhere due to lack of space. I'd recommend this place for a date or for catching up with a good friend. As for food: go with the "menu favorites" that have hearts next to them in the menu. Some standouts are the Bin Cho, Spicy Mono, Special Salmon, and the Mirai Combination. Definitely recommend this restaurant for the hardcore sushi lovers. My husband loves raw fish and trying new sushi, so he naturally liked the restaurant and would've given it 5 stars. The presentation is beautiful and, according to my husband, the fish is top-notch and worth the price. However, I myself do not like raw fish (I went for him), so I was not as big of a fan since my options were limited and the portions are small. If you are the kind of person who likes Americanized cooked sushi rolls at a decent price, this place is NOT for you. But if you appreciate authentic sushi and are willing to pay for presentation and quality (vs quantity), this place is for you! Ignored me and all my empty plates. Went about the other tables, ignored me, with my empty plates and empty cup of water. Came back to the right, took his second plate, ignored me, cashed out the left, ignored me. 35 minutes later. She comes back to the guy on my right elbow because we are sitting that close to each other at the sushi bar, gets his plate and finally looks over at me to ask how my food and if I wanted something else. Yep, I did..about 35 minutes ago. Now, I'm just done. The restaurant is a tiny place so there are not a lot of tables in here. I am the only black person sitting in here and feeling completely ignored. I'm also not usually conscious of this fact but the service was so horrible that I couldn't help but notice it.
