We ate dinner here tonight. We found it on yelp and decided to try it because we love sushi. It's a really nice restaurant, clean with nice decor. We ordered miso soup- very good, shrimp and vegetable tempura which was cooked perfectly. We had the following sushi:spider roll, shrimp tempura roll which were good but we've had better, sunrise roll which was good, the salmon was tender and no fishy taste and spicy crunchy salmon roll which was good and better than others we've had. For dessert we had exotic bombe which was very good according to my kids and they said they would come back just for it. I thought it was good, something different. By far my favorite Japanese restaurant in Newark, Delaware. Why is it so good? The service is speedy quick, the fish is always fresh and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is furnished with a small pond filled w fish, dark cherry wood booths with oriental lanterns above and dimmed lighting. The waitresses are always sweet and never opposed to substitute changes in menu combos. The green salad w ginger dressing is crisp and delicious. The fish is fresh and the sushi rolls are crafted beautifully and professionally. I wish I could dine without ordering the vanilla fried ice cream, but it is simply too hard to pass up. read more

Me and my friends arrived at Sushi Sumo promptly at 9:18 p.m. The hostess/server asked us whether we would be dining in or taking out. We replied that we would be dining in. She very aggressively told us that the restaurant would be closing at 10 p.m. After seating us she was very rude. She continued to stare at us and check to see if we were ready to order, because she was in a rush to leave. All of us only got miso soup and sushi, but my one friend wanted and Bento box which she was denied because it would "take too long and we had to be out by 10". So you're feeling like sushi tonight eh? Well you've come to the okiest spot. I have dined in as well as most recently gotten take out from this little spot. Its in a little shopping plaza off kirkwood and parking isn't bad. Eating in is a cool experience the staff is super friendly and tentative to your dining needs. They bring out a hot towel which I thought was pretty cool for a spot across the street from burger king. The waitresses are draped in traditional garb and come by pretty often. No complaints dining in. We most recently got take out and were very impressed as to how quick and fresh the food was. I called the order in drove about 10-15 min and it was hot and ready when I arrived. You have to pick up take out by the back bar which was a little odd as I was dressed in sweats thinking i would grab it by the door and bounce. A little embarrassing walking past people on dates or with groups dressed nice but ill never see them again anyway. The food....lets begin. The first time i was there we got the king crab leg dumplings and they were superb, crisp where they needed to be and the dipping sauce was perfect. I ordered them again this time for my takeout order and could barely muster them down. They were a bit soggy and the meat just tasted...off. I thought maybe it was canned but there was a shell in mine so now I have no idea. It just didn't taste like fresh crab should. My pregnant wife took one bite and nearly puked in her hand. We also got the seafood spring rolls which were amazing as the time before. Crispy on the outside, and wonderfully seasoned on the inside. I would definitely recommend as your appetizer, very fresh! I went with the chicken udon noodles, they were good...nothing to write home about just your typical Japanese noodle dish. We also got Shrimp tempura, dragon roll, California roll, and i believe a veggie roll. The sushi is very very good. I'm not a sushi snob so I am sure its not the best you can eat in your life, but definitely a strong competitor on kirkwood highway. The sushi tasted fresh and not soggy, the seaweed was crisp and the sauces newly made. Our options are normally Sakura or Sushi Sumo. Honestly if I was going to eat in one or the other I would pick Sushi Sumo, but for take out I would have to say Sakura wins this one. But Im just a lowly yelper, go check out either on your own and let me know what you think. Calamari salad had too much sauce and both calamari and lettuce was soggy and mushy smothered with sauce. Good customer service but certainly opportunity to improve quality of the food. read more

This is one of my favorite sushi spots. The servers I've had were great, and I have no complaints for the sushi. Some things on the menu could be way overpriced (jellyfish appetizer and king crab dumplings), but this is coming from someone who goes to China town ALL the time and know what it usually costs. I am a big sashimi girl, and the sashimi doesn't melt in my mouth like it has at other restaurants I have been to. The sashimi is cheaper than most places I have been to though, maybe that's why?! I went to three different sushi restaurants within one month that are some what close to me. This is the only place that carries salmon roe and sea urchin. The restaurant is always clean and usually busy. One off putting thing is that the hostess stand is usually vacant, but when they see you come in the door they will approach, weird but it works. Food is a great value for the price. Spicy Roll Combo is my go to, and its great every single time. Fiancee loves the age tofu and both the miso soup and salad that they serve. Typically I order them for take out, food is always ready when they say it will be, and the few times that we have dined in have been great as well. I've tried a lot of sushi places over the years in hopes to find the best most extravagant sushi I could find. But over the years I've realized that none have compared to the simple fresh sushi that Sushi Sumo serves. Don't get me wrong, they have their share of creative rolls!! But it is this hole in a random plaza place that I wouldn't have thought would be my favorite (Isn't that always the case? A random hole in the wall = best find). They have consistently served us top quality, fresh fish. Never have I been disappointed, and I've been there at least dozen times in the past 4 years (only a dozen because I've tried to give other places a chance and also I live in NJ and they are in DE). I have to give honorable mentions to THE SYMPHONY. It is an appetizer with tuna & salmon tartare, real crab meat, and caviar. They have a sauce on the plate that adds a beautiful savory touch and crunchies (for lack of better words) that gives it a satisfying texture. The combination is pretty epic. Tartare is one of those things that I crave so often and every time I find a restaurant that serves it, I tend towards ordering it. I've had great ones; I've had disappointing ones. I've found myself comparing them all to THE SYMPHONY. The flavors and the freshness of the fish are OUTSTANDING. Probably one of my favorite dishes ever. I know I haven't written many reviews yet but my passion is in food; I pretty much think about food all the time - when and what will be my next bite? To say this is one of my favorite dishes ever is pretty epic of me. One way this is not like your typical tartare is that they chop the fish into a fine smooth layer (rather than cubes of fish). And surprisingly I don't miss the avocado! Avocado is another food I tend towards if I see it in a dish - avocado? Sold. I'm in. If there is a roll without avocado...meh...I'll ask to add it! So I'm pretty surprise I don't miss it in The Symphony. Now, my wife and I each order our own as part of our meals because we've realized this is the one thing we don't want to share with each other haha. And just to finish off, I have to add I love their red bean ice cream and their ginger ice cream. Kind of obsessed over it. Must have at the end of the meal. The Milka candies they give you with the check is a cute and absolutely delicious simple thanks for dining with us. Check this place out. I have gone to this place since it opened. The ownership is great and cares about his business. The husband and wife remember there clients and treat them well. Food is always served with a clean presentation and is flavorful. I recommend this place for Sushi and even Raw oysters. The Shrimp fried rice and other menu items are delicious also.
