Sushi U is such a gem in Crystal Lake and makes for a really cute date night spot! Their all-you-can-eat menu offers a great variety of items, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. During our visit, we tried several sushi rolls, pork ramen, takoyaki, fried scallops, edamame, and miso soup. Everything was delicious, and the sushi was especially fresh. Be sure to save room for dessert--the ice cream bar is the perfect way to end the meal! The restaurant itself has beautiful decor and a welcoming atmosphere. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The staff was incredible! We walked in on a Friday night around 6:30pm, the hostess told us it was about a 5-10minute wait. Completely fair on peak rush hour for restaurants on the weekend. It ended up being a bit longer but we were able to wait at the bar and one of the waitresses offered to take our order even tho we were still waiting on a table to free up. We got our food quickly. Our waitress was apologetic for the wait and was very attentive. Our glasses were always full, the food was incredible and she gave us a free desert at the end of the meal. While staying in the area I decided to get sushi from Sushi U...The staff were really friendly and sweet... and that's a big deal to me! the decor and atmosphere was quaint and relaxing... I liked how dim it was in there! After great anticipation, their food did NOT disappoint! From the Miso soup to the shumai...excellent! Even the rice was not the usual white rice! Yummmy I plan to dine in the next time and try a dessert... to top it all off, the to go bags were not paper or plastic grocery bag...it was like a reusable cute bag!! Sushi U is my favorite sushi restaurant in the area (Crystal Lake, LITH, Algonquin)! The sushi itself is prepared nicely and they have a nice selection of rolls to choose from. Every time we've been here, I've chosen the AYCE option and I've always felt like I got my money's worth. My wife tends to avoid the mayo and cheese on rolls, and they've been really accommodating of that customization. The Crystal Lake, Forbidden, and Crazy Summer rolls are just some of the favorites that we can't get enough of. With the AYCE in effect, we've tried them all, but they're all so good it's hard to tell them apart. On Father's Day, they gave me some fried Oreos and it has been the talk of our family since last year. The service is kind and attentive and we never feel pressured to finish up and hurry out, which can be a characteristic of many AYCE joints. Though it may mean that there will be filled seats and longer wait times, I highly encourage any of you sushi lovers to stop in and make this place your favorite too! read more

I wanted to try Sushi U and see if there is a new All you can eat sushi place I can try. Here is my review: Ambiance There is a sushi bar and a seating area. There is nice decorations with little flags at the bar while the dining area has wooden tables and the booths have wooden benches where you sit. Each bench has some seat cushions. I have to admit, I am not a big fan of the seats but they are not horrible to sit on. Service The service was good. I was seated promptly and ordered. Food came out at a good time. I thought they did a good job with service. Food Note: slightly hard to evaluated each different sushi kinds I had, so I am just going to mention some things about my experience. The rolls I ordered were covered in sauce. They had good flavor. I ordered some nigiri sushi and found that the rice, to me, was a little bland. (Again) is is to my taste. The fish did not seem fishy and the nigiri pieces were cut better that other AYCE places I have been to. They brought out the pieces in some nice wooden plates, so points for the presentation. Overall It is a nice place to get AYCE sushi. They had a variety of other items on their menu that warrant me to come back and try them. I try not to do too many all you can eats because I usually am in a coma after I leave, but I think it is worth a try. read more

While there are some with better quality, they have poor service or are expensive. This is the best value but also tastes better than a "value" sushi place. The service is amazing. This is a great sushi / Asian restaurant. The decor inside is nice and more traditional. Even though we were the only ones at the restaurant for some time several people came to grab take out. We loved the appetizers, sushi rolls and even the Oreo tempura dessert. We didn't get the all you can eat because we wanted to try several items first - but it does seem like a great deal especially if you plan to get mainly sushi! This is my update for Sushi U. This past weekend we're hanging out and trying to figure out what we want for dinner. My wife and MIL were in a sushi mood and we figured we give Sushi U a good old try. I'd like to start out this review by saying that Sushi U actually reached out to me regarding my previous review (which has never happened to me before from any of my past reviews)...The owner actually complimented me on my constructive criticisms of their restaurant and she said they are reviewing and are going to make changes. We need more restaurants like this and at the end of the day we want to make these "non-chain" restaurants last for a long time and succeed in our neighborhoods. For dinner we went with a tuna poke bowl, edamame, rainbow roll, spider roll, shrimp tempura roll, california rolls, and spicy tuna roll. We started out with the edamame and they were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The edamame were just popping out of their shell and the salt was seasoned just nicely. My MIL ordered the tuna poke bowl and she said it was delicious and that she would get it again. My MIL is a tough food critic herself and she is all thumbs up with Sushi U. My wife got her standard california roll and shrimp tempura roll and it's all status quo with that. It was my turn to finally give the sushi at Sushi U a fair and honest review. For me, the one all-be all Sushi roll at any sushi restaurant is the Spicy Tuna roll. This is the creme de la creme. Yes, you're going to have other exotics sushi rolls but at every single Sushi restaurant you're going to have the Spicy Tuna roll. After sampling the spicy tuna, rainbow, and spider roll my verdict is that the sushi at Sushi U is just good. It's not the best sushi I've ever had and it's not the worst sushi that I've ever had. If you're looking for good sushi then Sushi U is the place for you. Sushi fish quality is good and fresh. Sushi rice taste is good. Wasbi, ginger sides are good. I don't really have a bad thing to say about the sushi at Sushi U. Prices are fair and you'll be getting a all around good food experience. I'm pleased that Sushi U has joined the neighbor and look forward to eating with them for many years to come. read more

I'm gonna tell you all this right now. No more than a teaspoon of rice should be on any nigiri, and no more than 1/2 inch thick rice should be on any rolls. Just because tastes "good" doesn't make it good. Sushi is expensive because it's fish. You're paying to eat just that, not rice. In other words, I just paid $40 to eat rice that I could cook at home using my Zojirushi rice cooker. How's the taste of it? We'll, if I mix all the ingredients that are in a roll together in a bowl of rice, everything will taste good. I'm just gonna go across the street to get a Poke Bowl now. read more

Had been meaning to try this place out for awhile and finally made it for lunch. Initial impression walking in was good and although not a huge place, it does have a cozy appeal. I was pleasantly surprised by what was included with the all you can eat option: a bunch of appetizers, nigiri sushi, standard rolls, and all of their specialty rolls. Everything we ordered was fresh and tasty and while I enjoyed it all, I'd have to say the Tiger roll was my favorite. Despite the fact there was only one server working during a moderately busy Saturday lunch period, she was hustling like crazy and everything was served in a timely, as well as friendly, manner! I can totally appreciate this place. I love sushi of every shape and form even relatively tame sushi. This place is what I will call tame sushi. Its not to scary looking and very delicious. I like taking my son here mainly because its more tame and its less likely he will order something not even I would touch. The ayce is your normal eat everything or be charged for it. I like their spicy rolls, squid salad, and fish over rice. Now my only serious complaint about here is the customers who do not know the rules of AYAC. When we ate there was a woman who was making a big stink because they didnt like what they ordered, loudly. She wanted to take it home with out paying menu price or per piece. She was rude, and treated well out of the sheer fact that customer service exists. I have to applaud the poor girl serving this woman. (She did not deserve good CS. Its like going to a buffet and getting a doggie bag with put paying per LB.)and its not illegal for them to charge per piece or menu price for an uneaten roll. Dont do AYAC if your going to do this it hurts the business and drives AYCE prices up for those eat it consistently. read more
