My Japanese wife & I have eaten here several times and have been happy with the quality of the sushi, granting that she has a very high benchmark for this given her background. Wouldn't claim it was the best ever but certainly good enough for repeat visits and very reasonably priced. Today we ordered a variety of nigiri and 3 maki rolls for takeout that were very disappointing. The rice beneath all the fish was cold and hard, either not made today or if so, undercooked. I picked up the order less than 5 minutes after they finished making it and it was eaten maybe 10 minutes after that, so it wasn't an issue of it going bad in transit or sitting around before eating. Also, the salmon skin roll, which we'd enjoyed on a previous visit, had something off about it, a very strong off-flavor, enough so that we didn't dare finish it. Wow! We had been regulars at Kumi Sushi for as long as they have been open. Last night was the absolute worst experience at Kumi or therefore, any restaurant that we have been to for a long, long time. We arrived at 7pm for my husband's birthday dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We entered the restaurant to about 5 tables full of dishes and the patrons were gone.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We found a seat in the corner and waited 15 minutes to put in our drink order. Waited another 20 minutes for the drinks to come. We had to wave down somebody to put in the dinner order. We ordered a hibachi meal and 2 premium sushi rolls. With the hibachi order comes soup and a salad. My husband's hibachi order comes out first without soup or salad followed by soup and salad 5 minutes later. Still no sushi order.. Wanting my husbands meal to be eaten warm, he starts his hibachi steak. Still no sushi so I am left with him eating his entire meal and I have nothing. For 25 minutes, I have no meal and he is completely finished. In the meantime, I see 2 tables who arrive after us get their sushi. We were at the restaurant for 90 minutes and I had nothing to eat. We canceled my sushi, paid for what was eaten and left, never to come back again. For more than 10 years we have been regulars of Kumi Sushi, no more. They only care about their takeout orders and not their restaurant customers. It was a horrible experience. read more

One of my favorite sushi restaurants around. Been trying to support local restaurants as much as we can during COVID-19 and ordered Togo pickup by calling in. Order was ready and felt safe going to pickup. Food was great as always and enjoyed the Godzilla roll, spicy tuna roll and yellowtail sashimi personally while my family enjoyed the rest. The tofu teriyaki is one of their favorites and AAC rolls are excellent as well. Edamame was the starter and some miso soup comes with the dinners. Calling in to place my order worked best for me. Most disappointing sushi experience since we moved here. Hubby is Japanese and we all love sushi so when we moved here a couple mos. ago we started exploring sushi spots. We've been to about 5 or 6 different restaurants and Kumi did not live up to the hype in the other reviews. To start, we went during a bad heat wave and instead of the restaurant being a cool oasis, it was almost as bad as outside. I could see the thermostats from our table. Obviously something was wrong with the system. They had the thermostats set at 66 but the inside temp was 88 (and humid!). That would have been ok, if the food was great. But it wasn't. Hubby's food was "fine". My roll was not good. Probably my fault for ordering a crab Rangoon roll. But it sounded good! Crab mixed with cheese, crunchies and cucumber. The cream cheese was not mixed into the crab, but rather a blob added in next to dry crab meat. The wasabi mayo that was supposed to be drizzled on top was only on a couple pieces. My husband ordered white fish (along with other sushi), and did not receive it. My 10 yr old ordered egg (tamago) and they brought unagi instead. The waiter even repeated the order to us. We could have overlooked how miserable we were in the hot and humid restaurant if we'd received the correct order and the food had been good. We won't be returning. read more

Even their soy sauce tasted better than most. We started with the Gyoza and worked our way to a Soft Shell Crab and Godzilla roll. The Gyoza was bursting with favor the minute you took a bite. All I can say is YUM! I was expecting the Soft Shell Crab roll to be small (as most places are), but the piece was giant. Even though the roll was only 5 pieces, it was enough to fill me up after my appetizer. Side note, get it with spicy mayo and eel sauce. The Godzilla roll, OMG! Amazing! It was deep fried, but lightly and the spicy tuna melted in your mouth. My mouth is still watering thinking about it. All employees had masks on. 2 out of the 3 sushi chefs were wearing their masks below their nose and 1 of them barely had his covering his mouth. Disappointing to me especially when he's up close and personal with raw food. Picked up my order and went home to eat with the family. We ordered a few rolls and got the kids chicken ramen. Everything was going fine until my kid bit into half raw karaage (chicken tender bites). We called to complain and the person who answered said the chicken is precooked. He took no accountability for the undercook chicken, but was trying to blame it on their distributor. My husband was arguing that precooked still means THEY need to make sure it's properly cooked before serving it to their customers. My husband also pointed out a child was starting to eat the undercooked chicken and should our child get sick, it would be on their hands- to which the person had nothing to say. And then instead of offering any apologies or try to rectify the situation, my husband had to demand a refund, to which the person finally obliged to. What a joke... we will no longer be supporting this business. For an extra 10 minute drive, we'll take our business over to Lake Zurich, where they have twice the amount of options and service is superb. read more

It has shrimp, avocado, cucumber, and topped with crab and eel sauce. It was good but not as tasty as I thought it would be. The crazy salmon roll is good for salmon lovers like myself with spicy salmon on the inside, topped with salmon, tobiki, and spicy mayo on the outside. We also got the Szechuan chicken with white rice. This dish came with soup and salad. The portion was a good amount. True, we ordered some of the less complex rolls, but the true quality should shine in the basics. The spicy mayo in the spicy salmon roll, for example, was lacking spice and flavor. I had to use the soy sauce to open it up. I have stated before that I am not a sushi snob, but I do value the quality in relation to cost. The pricing here just doesn't match the product. The service was excellent, and the ambience felt classy and modern. There was a chilling draft when the two doors opened just right. As an appetizer we got the edamame. All four rolls were really tasty. They have a pretty big selection. I give it 3 stars for two reasons. I wish the drink menu had been a little bit longer, especially the beer and wine list. We didn't have choices for the wine, which for a non-BYOB sushi place isn't preferable. The second reason is that we were seated near the corner of the restaurant by the bathrooms.
