I didn't know anything since I have not come to Sushi House since last fall. I chatted with sushi chef when I was leaving and said I was happy with the food. It has been very busy and we have been going up north to eat Japanese food, so I know I neglected this place. I came in with my daughter for lunch. It looked and felt different when I stepped into the door. I saw sushi counter, and I did not recognize the chefs there. We were told to sit any table...., which was also very odd. The server brought a menu and a second I saw the menu, I realized that the owner must have changed. The menu had English words on the top and Japanese below. Where it says "Entrée" it says the "Entrance" in Japanese. He would not have approved this menu. Then I saw Dan dan noodle. This is not a Japanese dish but it is a Chinese dish. I told my daughter, that the owner must have changed. We decided to try still, and ordered bento boxes, because it would be the safer selections. Then my daughter told me that we should order a couple of rolls to test how the sushi are. We ordered the simple tuna roll, Futomaki and she wanted to order eel roll. When sushi came to my table, I was not happy at all seeing sushi on the plate. Tuna roll had bigger block of tune in the middle and very thin layer of rice. Sushi roll is a harmony of the rice and fish. One can not be more than another. The well balanced tuna should have the half size of this tuna and twice as much rice. I tried. Fish seemed to be fresh, however, there are too much tuna and not enough rice. Then I looked at Futomaki. Futomaki means a big roll. Their Futomaki was not big at all and the ingredient was not at all traditional Futomaki. There is no sweet egg, and kanpyo. These are the must have in Futomaki. Tasted OK, but that is all. Not good enough to call it Futomaki. Then we tried Eel roll. I was expecting eel to be in the middle of rice and we would dip in the soy sauce to eat, but it was a miniature dragon roll. Bento box was fine, but sushi rolls are not in good standard. I am glad that I did not order Nigiri. I would have been super disappointed. Sushi House was the only decent authentic sushi restaurant in west suburb. It is no longer there. I have to drive up north to eat good sushi now. Bento box came with main dish and rice, with more rice... Please note that we do not eat white rice and sushi roll together in the bento box in Japan. We spent $15 for bento box. We can eat super authentic Japanese food for lunch under $15 if we drive up to Rolling Meadows. That is what I have to do now. I was not the most faithful repeating customer for Sushi House, but I used to come a few times a year. We came on the day when Tanya was leaving. Then we came back a couple of times after that. I feel sad but I have to say good-bye to the place we have been coming for good 20 years. I am so tired of those fake Japanese restaurants in Chicago suburbs. Sushi House is now Sushi Ukai, and shares a menu with the Glen Ellyn and LaGrange locations. Have visited several (6+) times over the recent months and find their sushi to be of consistently high quality, fresh, and flavorful. As I am doing the "low-carb" thing, I only get sashimi (and sometimes nigiri), so the freshness of the fish is paramount, as it is not covered in sauces or breading (panko). The fish at Sushi Ukai is reliably fresh. The also have on occasion true wasabi, not just reconstituted mustard-based wasabi powder, which is a real treat. Also lately they have had Uni (Sea Urchin (not just Sea Urchin roe)), which was fresh and smelled only of the sea, and which I've not found at many other regional sushi restaurants. The service has been uniformly friendly, efficient, and instructive - the staff is as knowledgeable about the different sakes as the sushi, and has made fine recommendations thereof. Being a Napervillian, my go-to had been Shinto, Blue Sushi, and Wild Tuna, but Sushi House/Ukai in Wheaton is frankly now superior and worth the extra travel for me. read more

I am a though critic when it comes to sushi because I have had some good sushi in my time but I absolutely LOVED this place. First let me start with the ambiance- it was super cute and classy on the inside- perfect place to grab food and drinks on a date or with a friend. The decor was very nice and unique. There seemed to be a wait because we went on a Friday night- but sine we only had a party of 2 we were seated right away. First we ordered the ices matcha green tea (we were torn between the green tea and their mixed drinks with sound amazing)- glad I got the green tea it was good and shockingly cheep- I feel like I always pay a lot more for matcha green tea. We got 2 appetizers the gyoza and the mushroom one (don't recall the name) the gyoza was good- tasted like any other gyoza that I've had. BUT THE MUSHROOM ONE WAS AMAZING- I suggest anyone who likes mushrooms to try it. I got the crunchy muffy roll which was good but the best part was the desert. The service at Sushi House is among the best I've received in the suburbs. They truly wait on you, hand-and-foot. The chefs are very friendly and will accommodate some specific requests. The restaurant itself is located inside the Danada Square shopping center so there will never be a problem finding extremely close parking. The interior is sparsely decorated in a somewhat traditional Japanese style. It is always spotless inside. The sushi is one of the best in the immediate suburban area. But their meats are really what puts this restaurant on the board. Their chicken and steak have little to no fat on them. Whereas other tempura chickens use really low-quality poultry, these guys go all out with the quality. As with most Japanese restaurants in Illinois, the restaurant is somewhat expensive but if you join Sushi House's e-mail list, they send out discount coupons every month or so. So unless you decide to make sushi your post-bourgeois, upper-crust daily haunt, the prices shouldn't be too exorbitant. Sushi House is a great place to go once. It's also a great place to frequent with its consistently excellent service and high-quality food. read more

Okay, last experience there was pure 1 star. Not so good. Overpriced. Felt really rushed for some odd reason. Not satisfied in the least after I left. Every other time has been fine--- still way overpriced, but in Wheaton you can do that with sushi I guess. It's more of a rarity. But yeah, it's always been good enough. This sushi house makes me very happy. Let me start by saying I am relatively picky about raw fish. Who wouldn't be?! I have been to too many of those little fast food sushi places where every single sushi is one of those delightful nuggets of overly sweet rice with a strip of fake crab shoved inside for good measure. May I add that this fake crab is a) clearly not crab, b) made of whitefish, corn syrup, and red food coloring, and c) vile. So, yeah, looking for something that's not this. The Sushi House in Wheaton is small, so I wouldn't go there on a Saturday or Friday night because it gets crowded and the wait is long. That's the price you pay for good sushi; they make it there for you...it's not riding along on a demented little train, around and around for hours till someone eats it. There are three little private "rooms" with sunken tables and carpeted floor "benches." You politely take off your shoes to go in there. Families with shrieking children are oft best contained in there. Wahoo...sliding closing doors! You can also sit at a table or at the sushi bar. Service is fast (considering there are three sushi chefs and they're making custom sushi for everyone in the restaurant...this isn't fast food). Servers are courteous and friendly. Were you to require my menu suggestions, I would offer the following tidbits of deliciousness: Start with miso soup. It's awesome and very light. Have a seaweed salad next. It contains three types of seaweed, cucumbers and something crunchy I can't identify. It's a plant though. All comes topped in a lemon dressing. Be brave. Eat seaweed. Next, if you want a little of everything, order the Sushi deluxe. It comes with various rolls and regular sushi. I usually get rolls instead. The ones my friends and I love include the Crunchy Roll (shrimp and crunchies), Red Dragon Roll (avocado-wrapped roll with salmon or tuna in the middle), Fire Roll (spicy, no kidding, with yellowtail, scallions, and red spicy sauce, tempurah fried), and Volcano Roll (salmon and mayonnaise, roll baked in oven). For dessert, I highly recommend the mochi ice cream. They are little ice cream balls about the size of a golf ball. The outside is a very tender and delicious pulverized glutinous rice layer. Sounds so icky when I put it that way, but it's not. Flavors include, chocolate, mango, strawberry, coffee, and green tea. I've had all of them, but I usually get one mango and one chocolate. When you leave, you get an Andes Chocolate Mint thing. And if you're really talented, like me, you can make a teeny-tiny paper airplane with the wrapper, and it flies really far. Don't throw it in the restaurant, even if you think you're aiming at your dining companion. Trust me, I know this from experience. Great place! read more

I am not a cheap person and willing to pay for good food...but when it tastes good but the size is so small and then on top of it so overpriced....I start to scratch my head. Sushi was good, fresh. But it's very, very uncomfortably quiet there. I went with two girlfriends. There were maybe 4 other customers in the restaurant. We sat at the sushi bar, laughed, experimented with lots of different selections, chatted with the chef, were having a great night out. We gave this place another try because being pregnant makes me testy about where I eat. A marked improvement for all members of my family - my husband loved the steak teriyaki, first in the burbs he said that is not half fat. I had the healthy roll dinner which was so cute (I love presentation) it has veggies on top of rice (how tuna, etc comes) and rolls filled with tofu - of course $15 was a bit pricey for 8 pieces of veggie sushi and a cucumber roll in my mind, and the service did take more than an hour. I thought this is Sushi House but my Credit card slip says Sushi Ukai in Wheaton, Il. I am not really into giving reviews but when service sucks, and the food is terrible with no taste, I want to share. First I walk into this restaurant and some lady who is no where near me yells out Can I help you? she is on the another side of this small restaurant. I said yes 1. Then she walks over and seats me. Okay no big deal. I thought that was kind of strange. Then my waitress comes up to me to take my order. No big deal. I order Miso soup with a Caterpillar roll and 2 pieces of tuna. The restaurant was half full again not a huge place. I have eatin there several times before and service was always good not excellent but good. After 10-15 minutes the waitress says your food should be up shortly. Okay. I waited about another 15-20 minutes then my food comes. I did get the Miso soup pretty quickly. Unfortunately it had little taste and was warm not hot but I would deal with it. Still waiting for my food as I was going to give it 5 more minutes and I was out the door the other one that yells across greeting me so to speak brings my food. The tuna rolls had 0 taste. I ate my Caterpillar Roll. Again 0 taste. Maybe it was so fresh it had no taste. This was the worst Sushi I have ever eatin. It tastes better at Marianos and Petes Fresh Market. I thought I was gonna order more food but I figure between the wait time to get your food and the quality I would pass. I get my check as I asked the waitress for it and the bill for what I ate was 26.85. With tip it was 31.35. The biggest rip off of a restaurant. Lousy food, Lousy service. Totally disappointing. I have been to this location a couple of times now, sometimes with my close friend. Every time we have been here we have had a great experience and loved the food. The overall decor of the place and music really does set the mood for what you are coming into eat. I also love how the bar and tables are laid out. Although it can be really quiet here, I enjoy it since it makes the experience more relaxed. They have a wide selection of sushi and very tasty noodle and rice dishes to try from. Sushi House in Wheaton is the absolute BEST place to get Bento Boxes for *lunch. I love their tempura (lightly battered and fried veggies and shrimp). Whenever I come, I always get the teriyaki chicken bento box for about $10, but there is also steak and fish too for a couple dollars more. You won't find any other sushi house near by that will sell full bento boxes for less than $17 and the same quality (if you do, please tell me!) The rice is perfectly made, the tempura is lighted battered, there are usually 4-6 pieces of sushi, and poultry is good too. I've also had their soba noodles with tempura and that is also a delicious dish. I'll usually come on a Saturday lunch and save the left overs for dinner. This place is never terribly busy, and the servers are very good. They do a great job keeping your tea filled and checking in if you need anything else. Also there are 2 rooms that seat larger parties with pillows, and create the ambiance of a Japanese house. My friends and I always go to the studio movie grill on Friday night. We recently stopped by at this sushi house. The service was attentive and friendly. The waitress was knowledgeable and explained every single dish that was served at the table.The food quality was good and fresh.
