This was yummy but I think less rice would be an improvement. Each piece is packed with a ton of rice in it. Glad it only came with 6 pieces. This was just right for me as I wanted room in my tummy to go out for dessert afterwards. Service was "meh" again. I had asked for a cup of hot water in the beginning but nobody ever brought it to me, and I didn't feel like asking again so I just contented myself with the glass of cold water that they gave me. Okay, this was one of our favourite places when we lived in north van. The earthquake today wasn't the only shakey thing about this joint. First off I want to give credit where credit is due. Food was pretty solid all around, I'm a big fan of the sushi pizza or should say I was. The rice has sky rocketed to 23$ for this one item and size and quality had fallen off. Waaaaaaaaaay too much for such a disappointment. I ordered the John roll and the sushi pizza which is listed as an appetizer combined ran me 37$ after tax. Whole both were delicious, neither item wow'd me like a 40$ sushi Bill should. Service was average, room a whole to get anyie to my table and I do t know if this is common but no ice in the water KILLS ME! Tepid water is my kryptonite! Decided to check out this spot in North Van. Plenty of street parking around the place. There's a patio section as well as indoors. The service was good all throughout. Ordered a couple of specialty rolls - Grouse mountain roll and the Rachel Mango Roll - let me tell you... it was humongous! They fill it with crab meat (imitation of course ) but you get your money's worth with one roll alone. The tempura was fresh. Ebi sunomono had good balance of sour and sweet. Portions of these rolls were massive! I usually don't order special rolls, but I saw that the volcano and grouse mountain rolls were the most popular so I had to try them out. Very well worth your money here and the presentation is on fleek! The chopped scallop nigiri was more finely minced than what I'm used to but the toro was fatty, just how I liked it. Personally, I would say this is the best Sushi experience I've had while visiting Vancouver, and I've tried several upon my arrival. I make a visit to a new sushi place every time we come out to west van or north van. Today, I visited Sushi Umi with mom and dad to try out their bento boxes and special rolls. We got their white roll which was a california roll with chopped scallop on top. I thought it was very delicious with delicate flavours, not oxersauced and a large portion of tempura mixed scallop on top! The teriyaki box B was also quite good with very crispy tempura, well constructed dynamite roll, and beef teriyaki. The only small complaint is that there wasn't rice that came with the box so it wasnt very filling for the price. Lastly, we got the salmon tataki and mango salad. This was my least favourite as the greens were literally drowning in sauce. I liked the salmon and mango portions but there flavours were much too overwhelmed by the pool of dressing on the bottom. Overall, not a bad place for korean styled japanese food with prices that are a bit higher and a salad that needs work. read more

This is our weekly go to for sushi take out. We've tried multiple sushi restaurants in the area, quality and selection is balanced well at a reasonable price. Their consistent in the quality too, so it's reassuring to know it'll be good every time. Their special rolls are really good as are the regular ones. Our favorites include the volcano roll, red roll, salifornia, prawn crunch and dynamite rolls. The tempura is fresh, light and crisp, some of the best I've had and the chicken don is good too, tasty. The sushi fish is fresh and good quality. You can order online with an estimated pick up time which is convenient and makes it a whole lot easier. They're popular, so be prepared to wait an hour for pick up at peak times. Some of their items are a little expensive comparatively such as the miso soup. But the special rolls, while pricey, are hearty and over double the size of the regular rolls, so it's filling and worthwhile. Great sushi, consistent and top quality. We tried the Volcano roll, house roll, and negi-hamachi roll for takeout on Sunday. They were very busy with takeout orders and the wait time was about an hour at 5pm. The volcano roll was nicely presented and was very filling. House roll included a nice variety of sashimi, and the negi-hamachi roll was very fresh. They appear to be a Korean-run establishment in the likes of Sushi California, Sushi Town etc. but perhaps a bit nicer. Their chefs greeted us through the barriers while we waited our turn to be served by the front waitress. Pleasant experience, I would add this to our list of sushi places in north van. However, if you're looking for more of an authentic, simple Japanese style sushi, this might not be the place for you. read more

I absolutely love the food here. Delicious and not overpriced. The dining experience though was annoying. I went with a friend and he got his food about ten minutes before I got mine plus I also had to wait for mine to cool off. I felt rushed. They came by every 4-5 minutes to check on things which is great, a little overkill but it's fine, however RIGHT as I swallowed my last bite, they came over and asked if we wanted the bill. There was no grace period. I felt stressed and rushed so I said sure. Funny, after we paid (I gave a 20% tip too) no one came by to refill our tea or waters during that 20 minute period we spent after we paid. And no, it wasn't busy. read more

Sushi Umi has a lot of variety when it comes to different types of Japanese food and their specialty sushi rolls. They are also quite accommodating to changes to certain items (with extra charge of course). Their yakisoba with beef is quite bland and although their service staff are friendly unfortunately it's a bit slower service than expected. Of course, if you have great company then time flies by but on somewhat of an empty stomach. Tonkatsu was a smaller portion of sides then I imagined and their vegetable side for the dish was just regular cabbage with mayonnaise on it, which was a bit different than the traditional broccoli, carrot and bean sprouts. Their fish and ingredients seem to be fresh and it's the little things that matter like the glass bottle pops and the flavourful wakame salad. I ordered an Chirashi Don and the 4 piece tuna sashimi, thinking I needed extra sashimi due to other restaurants I've been to back home in Hawaii. I knew I couldn't finish it once the order arrived. The sashimi pieces were cut thick and large, and was very tasty. The prices were also a big surprise once I remembered this was in Canadian dollars. Sushi Umi is a Korean runned Japanese restaurant in the Lonsdale North Vancouver area. I came here later in the afternoon during lunch and it there were a few people at the restaurant dining for lunch as well. There was a good variety of sushi, all day boxes, appy and sashimi to choose from. The prices are about $1 -$3 more than your typical sushi town prices which is reasonable considering it is the North Vancouver neighborhood. We ordered the Sam's Roll, Awesome Roll and the chicken teriyaki box. The rolls were fresh and the box was alright - nothing too special but i wished they had sashimi with theor boxes and that it came with rice. I got takeout for my family here. Initially I chose Sushi Umi because they were the only place in the area that had my son's favorite- an avocado mango roll. When I came to pick up, I noticed that the restaurant was bustling, and obviously a local favorite. The ambience is very nice with lots of natural wood and soft lighting. Everything about our dishes was just a little above average. The two special rolls we ordered were beautifully presented. The miso soup had deep fried tofu puffs in it. I would recommend this place but only if you are looking for something a little out-of-the-ordinary. The menu selections are unique and quite tasty. The decor is nice but a little stark with strips of clear cedar floor to ceiling. The service is definitely lacking. We came in at 3pm. We were on of two tables but our server hardly ever came by. Great service and good quality sushi. It is a bit on the pricy side, but I did enjoy the meal. We ordered the nigiri & sashimi box and chicken katsu box along with some bluefin, tamago and uni nigiri. Food arrived fairly quickly. Miso was pipping hot. I was told that the sushi in Vancouver is pretty good. I ordered this over the phone and my yelp app was a lil slow so I wasn't able to see pix.. I'm big on pix when I order food. Anyway, I went with the basics and got a rainbow roll.. really tasty, also got the veggie tempura and the California roll... both of those were really good as well. Wasn't impressed with the spicy tuna.. it's a different mix than what I'm used to in the states. It's much more saucy and more sweet than spicy.. I tried putting it on my California roll to disguise the flavor but that didn't work.. I ended up throwing most of it away. This is an update specifically regarding using the Sushi Umi website to order. I ordered on a Tuesday night around 7pm and the app said that it would take about an hour for my food to be ready. The app usually updates to say my food is done, but after an 1 hour and 15 minutes, the app still said "Preparing". I called and the restaurant said that the food was actually ready. I went to pick up (I live just a few minutes away) and my husband's Pork Katsu was no longer crispy and my tempura was soggy indicating that the food had been sitting for awhile. The app is usually pretty good about updating, but maybe someone was too busy to do it this time for my order. Next time, I'll just phone earlier and ask whether my food is ready. read more

I order delivery from Sushi Umi probably at least once or twice a week now, with COVID and all, and they always get my order right, which often isn't the case with delivery. I'm pretty fussy about sashimi and not only is it SUPER fresh from here, the pieces are huge! I always get wild salmon sashimi and agedashi tofu and they are always cooked (or raw, as it were) to perfection. The fish is so fresh that I often order the 8 piece (enough for 2 people easily) and eat it the next day. They're also super fast with delivery. Highly recommended. read more
