This place does not disappoint. Some people might think long wait before you're seated is a bad thing. In this case, it is a very good thing. Sushi Uni always busy, but well worth the wait. I always start off with hot tea and the spicy crab salad...AMAZING!!! I followed that with the Dinosaur and KC Chief rolls....SOOO GOOD!! I am always walking out with a to go box because of their portions. Sushi Uni is the most affordable sushi in KC. My wife spoke with a worker there and she said they want to keep the prices affordable so they can give back to the customer. No price gouging here. Finally, let's talk about the staff. Our sever seemed like she could careless, looking around not hearing what we are saying. This strip mall sushi spot is a little out of the way for someone who stays on one side of the state line but it's worth the trek out to Olathe to support someone's neighborhood sushi shop. The size has recently almost doubled which helps accommodate the business lunch rush a little better however, it still is quite cramped compared to some more open floor plan concepts. The booths aren't terrible but the actual dining tables are situated very close together so, beware of bumping elbows while properly maneuvering your chopsticks. The staff seem to be running around willy nilly within the approximately 12 meters of space they are given and simultaneously they were hard to find to order more $3 Saki bombs. The sushi itself left little to be desired, it was fresh enough (for Kansas sushi) and more importantly, the rolls were wrapped tight enough that they held their shape throughout baths in the low sodium soy sauce provided. The number of ingredients and "toppings" were not of ridiculous proportions like some of the chain sushi restaurants down in the Power and Light belt. Not to mention the lunch value is outstanding, $9.95 for two rolls and choice of soup and 2 pieces of crab Rangoon. The Dinosaur Roll was tempura fried and had a trio of sauces striped on top, it was delicious. The honey wasabi roll was a big hit as well, it wasn't spicy at all because of the cubes of cream cheese the roll contained. The spicy tuna crunch roll, which was the only raw roll the table sampled was very well balanced and the tuna wasn't macerated/botched it still had nice texture to it. The calamari roll with eel sauce and some type of spicy mayo was the only real let down, the eel sauce wasn't the best, couldn't really place why but it really made me wish I had Kona's only redeeming quality-their eel sauce and less of the bright orange mayo. Came here a couple times for take out and was happy with the food, so decided to dine in with my fiancé. We came on a busy Friday night and it took 40 min to get seated. Understandable. It took another hour to actually receive our food which we would've been okay with given how busy they were. What made us very upset was that other parties were receiving their food before us when they were seated after us. A party seated next to us arrived 30 min after and still received their food before us. By the time we received our food, our appetites were lost. Terrible service. No apologies from anyone. The servers were all really lovely, the price was awesome, and the food was soooo yummy. They have a lunch special - 3 rolls for $12.50 with 2 crab rangoon & a soup/salad! The sushi here is honestly really good, one of the best spots in town. But that shouldn't give them an excuse for TERRIBLE customer service. After waiting an hour for our order it finally arrived...to the table next to ours. The chef then personally brought our remade order back, pulled his mask down, slammed the order on our table and told us loudly, "do me a favor and never come back." This was super embarrassing, and ruined our appetite. Tell me, honestly, especially during COVID-19 would you want to eat sushi that's been sitting at another customer's table that's been talked over and poked at? No...the manager never even came by to discuss the situation. She just made eye contact me with several times from afar. At 9pm we finally left, after our appetites were ruined.
