Well this is going to be tough, I don't mean to come off rude however the sushi my partner and I ordered was incredibly disappointing and one roll in particular was practically inedible due to the fish tasting not quite right. I had to wash it down with my drink. We ordered the Twin Dragon, Crunchy Cajun and Sexy Mama roll. They looked appetizing, but left soo much to be desired in terms of flavor, which might even be too generous a way to describe the taste. Seriously, I love fish and sushi but these rolls tasted very off. Some of the yellow tail appeared freezer burnt with visible discoloration as well. It's such a shame my partner and I really enjoy sushi nights. It's a regular go to for us ever week or so but with many other options for it in the metro, I don't think we'll return to give Kabuki a second chance. It was that disappointing. Who would have ever thought!!! Kabuki Sushi is at the bottom of an apartment building in Brookside and is VERY easy to miss. Once you get in there, it's pretty small and intimate, but it feels really homey and the staff is great and very kind. We had a fun night of trying new things and loved all of our sushi. We even got a free dessert for posting a photo of our visit to social media! There are a lot of sushi places in KC and it's tough to weed through which ones are actually worthwhile and which are not. Staff was incredibly friendly. This is not a large space, but it's a comfortable space. We sat at the bar and the chef was very patient with my questions and I enjoyed learning about the different rolls he was creating. We were pleasantly surprised to find that happy hour lasted until 7:00 and included discounts on beer, wine, appetizers and some rolls. Hubby has put this place on equal footing with our favorite Sushi Uni, but so much closer to our home. The fish was incredibly fresh and the pieces were a nice size. The house salad and miso soup that came with hubby's dinner were quality dishes and were not served merely as an afterthought, which was very much appreciated. I tried the Sexy Mama roll and loved the dipping sauce (yuzu ponzu sauce) that he served with it. It gave the roll the perfect amount of heat with a unique flavor twist. The main thing was the order was either wrong or the description was; I ordered one of those always fun, loaded and lightly fried tempura rolls (their Mega Roll) but what I got wasn't that at all.. no tempura, it had cooked tuna fish in it as well as raw salmon, which was quite the contrast and not in a good way. The spicy tuna roll was pretty tasty, although not any more memorable than any other sushi I've had in the past. I also got some tempura veggies and they were fine, although seriously lacking in both flavor and quantity. All in all, I was really excited to order delivery from here after hearing good things, but it'll be hard to sway me back in with so many other options to explore throughout KC. read more

Kabuki Sushi is truly a hidden gem in KC. Nearly hidden in the ground floor of Meyer West Condos, Kabuki Sushi is a small restaurant serving some big hits. To sample a little bit of everything, I ordered the chirashi. I've eaten at a lot of different sushi restaurants in KC, and the fish here was pretty darn impressive! It was fresh, flavorful, and I can't wait to come back. Not to neglect the sides, the miso was good and the seasoned rice great. Even if you don't get the chirashi, I'd try to see if you can score a side of the seasoned rice with whatever you order. Overall, Kabuki is on my short list of best sushi restaurants in KC. While the outside of the restaurant is unassuming- which my husband and I personally love. The inside of the restaurant is bursting in authenticity, warmth, and a sweet ambiance. The employees were above and beyond kind. Like SO kind and joyful- cannot emphasize this enough. Even if I didn't like the food I would want to go back solely to support the people. Alex and Lucy helped us but honestly the whole staff was welcoming. Now the Food: We got the kabuki dragon roll, the miko roll, and the cajun crunchy roll. they were FANTASTIC. My husband and I are big sushi people and both have lived in bigger cities previously with incredible sushi options. This was hands down our favorite sushi place so far after a year of hunting for one in KC. Not a negative but something to be mindful of most specialty rolls were $17-$18 which was more than the average that we've seen for a speciality roll in KC. We will be returning customers for sure!! Kabuki's has been a family favorite for over 20+ years, but after the passing of the owner/cook Kabuki's just hasn't been the same. Luckily the sushi chef is still there, so there was no drop in quality of sushi, and everything comes out as delicious and fresh as before. The unfortunate part is that the rest of the menu just isn't the same. The Tonkatsu (pork cutlets) are smaller portions and hammered dry. The udon noodle soup is not udon at all and would say stay far away. Just upsetting as all you have to do is look up a recipe on-line. Really no excuses why food should come out just okay, at that point might as well stay home and cook yourself. I would still come here for the sushi, but it makes me sad because everything here use to be amazing and now it's just average. read more

Okay first things first, blink and you will miss it. Your GPS will say you've arrived and you'll curse your GPS out for being stupid. This is a small sushi restaurant under an apartment building. Don't bother trying to find it while driving, just find a picture beforehand so you know where you're going. They have a lot of unique rolls, I tried the Kabuki roll and sexy roll, both were great. The sexy roll had a spice too it, not too much just right. There is one sushi chef and one server, so expect to wait for your food 30-45 minutes if not more. The table of 6 I was with were the only ones there and it took about 40 minutes. I can't imagine if the place was full. Don't come starving, because you will be hangry, but try it out. With our usual go to sushi place closed, we had to try a different place. Damn you winterstorm Gia! Located on the first floor of an apartment building, it is quite a small place. Aside from the bar, there were maybe 5 tables? Prices were reasonable. But the quality of the fish was only so-so. The clams and octopus tasted frozen then thawed. The chirashi deluxe was ok, but it lacked variety. When 6 of your pieces are tuna and yellowtail, it just lacks imagination. The rolls were ok. There were some Japanese businessmen when we were there, so maybe it's not as bad as I think? I would place this experience in the second or third tier. Nice service though. One more thing. The drink menu measured the small sake as 350ml and there was no way that it came close to that. Maybe 200 or 250ml was more accurate. Overall, it was a bit disappointing. read more

This is my favorite sushi place in town and IMO the best spot I've been to outside of Japan. The prices are a tad expensive but this is exactly what sushi should be AND they do everything else on the menu right. The tempura was light and crispy but soft, without any chunks of batter which is something most Japanese restaurants in the city get wrong. Great quality of fish and the chef really knows how to take care of his product. Highlights for my friend and I were the Toro, the chef's excellent mackerel, and high quality hamachi. For the quality you're getting, price is super worth it as well. Service was friendly, and we sat at the bar to talk more with the chef. He's been making sushi for over 20 years and he definitely loves his craft. We got to talking and he ended up teaching us about how to properly look at the quality of a piece of mackerel sushi, and went down to the granular details of how to properly care for the fish for the best taste and mouth feel for that one piece. For anyone in the area looking to find out what true quality means, I highly recommend Kabuki. Oh, and they've got some good fairly cheap sake :) read more

Because we came after 1:00pm we didn't have any trouble finding parking. They say they will have their liquor license in a week. The food was delicious as we remembered it and we sat at the bar chatting with the chef and catching up. My husband had the tempura udon and unagi, my son had the Spider-Man roll and the Kabuki Dragon roll, while I had the chirashi. And for dessert green tea ice cream. One of the better sushi places in KC. From the outside, Kabuki Sushi seems unassuming and is tucked away on the first floor of an apartment complex. However, inside this place is packed and offers some great sushi! I went with a large group of 9 people for dinner. Since this place is very small with limited seating, we had to wait 30 minutes for a table. However, the staff was very accommodating and gave us a table as soon as possible. We were quickly taken care of and put in our orders right away since the employees were running around. I ended up ordering a miso soup and the spiderman roll. After a few minutes, our appetizers arrived. My miso soup was delicious and had just the right amount of salt. To my pleasant surprise, there was real tofu in the soup! Soon afterwards, our sushi came out. My spiderman roll was delicious! I enjoyed the crab with spicy mayo. It was also a decent size for the price which made it worth it in my opinion. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Kabuki Sushi. My only complaint was that the space is small! I wish it was bigger so we had more room to move and didn't have to wait for seating for long. The prices are a tad more expensive than other sushi places in KC, but the quality of fish is better and worth the price. The lunch prices are much cheaper as well. So, I'd recommend stopping by during lunch if you want sushi and don't want to pay an arm or a leg for lots of fish! read more

The sushi is great and my wife is from the same region as our server so we got a little tip on the best day to visit and what to order. This is the only place I've found true chu-Toro which is my favorite. The uni wasn't great but it also wasn't bitter which is an indication its low quality or old. The best thing to order has to be tempura. Doesn't matter what kind you get, it's all amazing because they use perfect batter. The usual problems with tempura are either its soft/soggy or think/crunchy. Kabuki pulls off crispy light tempura every time. What a great find! I love quaint hole in the wall traditional sushi spots like this. The inside is clean and comfortable seating. I had a variety of nigiri all of which were fresh and tasty. The price is right on for the quality, which is surprisingly good from the looks of the place.
