After nearly a decade of being a loyal customer of this restaurant, I can honestly say that tonight was my last visit. It took nearly 20 minutes for a server to acknowledge us. Once they finally arrived, it was another 10 minutes before our drinks and appetizers came out. Because of the delay, we went ahead and ordered our daughter's medium steak hibachi. After waiting a while longer, we decided to order sushi as well, assuming her hibachi would arrive any moment. The sushi arrived well before her meal. When the hibachi finally came, the steak was severely overcooked. To the server's credit, they agreed to replace it. Despite the experience, we paid our bill in full and left a 20% tip. Before leaving, we decided to speak with the manager and give him an opportunity to address our concerns. Unfortunately, that may have been the most disappointing part of the entire evening. While we were explaining what happened, he laughed and joked with the staff, showing absolutely no sense of concern or urgency. There was no apology, no attempt to make things right, and seemingly no acknowledgment that we had just had a terrible experience. After nearly ten years of loyalty, I expected better. Here on a Friday night and this place is hopping. Packed out. Dance music playing in the background, buzz of friends & family enjoying time together, tables with good lighting, and a seating area where you can watch the sushi being made. They also have outdoor seating and an area with a boba food truck. Friendly & fast service. The little touches are nice. Paper straws. Fun displays on certain dishes. We got the Rainbow Roll- always good. And we tried the Carolina Roll and because we fall season we tried the Kabucha Tempura roll. That seems like a doable price for sushi these days and I certainly thought the quality of the sushi punched above the price tag at least for lunch. Portions are modest. The ginger dressing on the salad is the best I've had at any Japanese restaurant and really made this a highlight location for me. Enjoyed the sushi and some unique rolls / flavor combinations. In our experience, the prices for a little high for the quantity you get. Normally 4 rolls is plenty to share between the 2 of us, but we both wished we'd ordered another one (or two) given the size when the food was delivered. The roll slices are definitely small bite sized instead of some other restaurants we've visited where some rolls require a two bite attempt. They also brought the 4 rolls on separate plates which we thought was odd. And a very small amount of ginger and wasabi was provided. My wife and I love Sushi Yama. The nigiri is always fresh and usually good size. We have also come to enjoy a few unique rolls like the May Roll or the Paris Mountain Roll. The room is typically lively and warm with a full crowd. Order a little sake or Pinot Grigio to complement the sushi and a wonderful dinner is consumed. The service and owner are warm and friendly as well. Sushi Yama has earned our go to sushi restaurant since relocating to the Upstate. read more

My wife and I love sushi and we have went through a lot of sushi restaurants in search to find a sushi spot that's comparable to top sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. We can tell you that this is the place if you want fresh and high quality sushi. Also, the waiters and waitress here are excellent. We tried the hamacha (yellowtail) kama (collar). It was grilled and marinated perfectly. I would recommend this dish as a appetizer. Our favorite were the o-toro (extra fatty blu fin tuna) and chu-toro (fatty blu fin tuna) sashimi. It was the best we had and at a fare price compared to the sushi spots we ate at in LA. Also, the uni nigiri (sushi) was fantastic) The seared wagyu beef nigiri (sushi) was delicious it was naturally sweet and had a melt in your mouth feel. My niece and I had a wonderful lunch at sushi Yama. We sat in a nice large booth and the overall decor and music are very nice. They had many lunch specials that were reasonably priced. The sushi was just decent in my opinion, nothing super special but still pretty good. The spicy tuna roll didn't have the spicy sauce throughout so half was more of a plain tuna roll. I enjoyed the hibachi here very much. The chicken and shrimp were cooked perfect, as well as the veggies and rice being very good. We asked for yum yum sauce (which I highly recommend putting on all things hibachi). Finished off with mochi which were also very tasty. I moved to Travelers Rest from the Seattle, Washington area. Lived there for 63 years. They have some amazing Asian/Japanese foods there and I had many Asian friends. I went to this restaurant specifically for the Hamachi Kama. I will say I found it disgusting. First of all I should have known when the waitress told me it would take at least 15 minutes to prepare. I have cooked Hamachi Kama many times under a common household broiler in a conventional household oven and it took maybe 4-6 minutes to cook with some simple salt, pepper & a bit of garlic powder. This restaurant DEEP FRIED it! Horrible way to serve yellowtail collar. Totally ruined it! When I said it was NOT good, I got no reaction whatsoever. When I was presented with the tab I was given NO compensation whatsoever. I will never go back to this restaurant! I work very hard for my $ & when I eat out at any restaurant I expect the best. As the soup that came along along was presented in front of me I dived into its glory, each sip treasured like it was my last.
