Date I ate: 9/23/09 First time I've tried sushi in Peoria and it was pleasant. I may try a couple other places in town, but most likely I've found my sushi spot for whenever I'm passing through. Sushi Gawa is located in one of the new shopping plaza's with several chain and quick in-n-out restaurants. In fact, it looks a little like a fast-food joint on the inside - basic seating, bright lighting, and few Asian decorations thrown in for good measure. Probably not the place you want to take someone on a first date. All that being said, if you wanna get a quick, tasty, filling sushi fix for a good price, this is the place for you. I ordered the Spider Roll ($6.95) and the Fried California ($5.50). Both tasted very good though the Spider Roll was a little skimpy on spider. The Fried California was composed of those perfect, bite-sized pieces, but the Spider was made up of those pieces that are either two-bite or "please don't look at me while I shove this in my mouth" size. I like those kind of rolls, but they can also be a little annoying. This one was put together well enough that it didn't fall apart too badly when I battled to put it in my mouth. The service was nice and quick and the restaurant was very clean. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've been going to Sushigawa for at least 15 years. It used to be the best sushi in town, but this is certainly not the case now. The rolls have too much rice, the seaweed is soggy, the eel was cold with too much teriyaki sauce on top. Also the salad was watery and the shrimp tempura was all batter- could hardly taste the shrimp. Overall, the quality did not match the price. I wish I had complained to the manager, who is also the host, but he's completely unapproachable. This was my favorite sushi place in town, but I'm beginning to find myself wondering. Haven't been here since quarantine started. But I'm not sure if that's a sign or not. Service was good. The sushi? Nice presentation. Unfortunately it was room temperature when served and I'm not really sure if that's safe or not since the fish is supposed to be somewhat cool (I'm not expecting cold cold but not room temp either). Another sad part is that the only soup offered is miso, and I have a small hunch there was once an onion soup offered before quarantine. Overall, still a presentable location. I ordered for take out tonight. I ordered two rolls, one philly roll and one crunch roll. Both rolls had too much rice and on top of that the rice the tasted like it was not cooked correctly. The crunch roll was not what I was expecting. I'm used to a crunch roll being a cali roll with crunch on the outside. It seemed like the crunch was inside of the roll. Not sure what else was in it. I didn't have too high expectations but with an average of 4 stars from 100 reviews I thought I'd give it a shot. I am not a fan. The rolls were not very good. Okay, I'm a "Happy Fish" girl, but I figured I had to try Sushi Gawa, since many say it is one of the best places to get sushi in Peoria. To me, the sushi is on par with what you get at Happy Fish, though I found the rolls a little difficult to eat because they're so big! You know what I'm talking about..."bite size" pieces that are about as bite sized as sticking an entire cheeseburger in your mouth in one fell swoop. Even so, it was worth the extra effort since the rolls are very tasty! For me, what makes Sushi Gawa "special" is the fact that they offer some Japanese menu items to break up the sushi palette. I LOVED that they had a bento box combination plate offering, so I did not have to commit to just a sushi roll for dinner. Instead, I could mix it up with some yummy salad and ginger dressing, white rice, beef teriyaki, vegetables, sushi and California roll. I really enjoyed the variety! The new location is nice, though the tables are a little too close to each other for my taste. I could hear every word of the conversation of the couple at the table next to us, and I just didn't feel comfortable talking intimately with my husband with other Sushi Gawa guests sitting practically on my lap. Frankly, I was torn between giving this place a 3 or 4 and eventually went with the 4 because of the quality of the sushi. I was there on Black Friday with my college-age kids for dinner. We were seated promptly and drink orders taken. For far so good. The menus are full-page "enter the number you wish of each item" so it took a few minutes for everyone to complete their order. During this time, the server returned about every 2 minutes to check if were were done. After the third visit, it became quite annoying. Couple this with the issue that the server couldn't even answer simple questions (how many pieces are in a nigiri sushi order - 1 or 2, do you have Hamachi Kama available, or salmon skin roll) and apparently couldn't get the correct answer from the kitchen. Our orders came out reasonably promptly and they were certainly worth waiting for! All three of us loved the sushi and were happy to have stopped by for dinner. Sushi Gawa is tucked away in a strip mall off the interstate. The space is quite small compared to all of the other stores in the strip. The restaurant is one room with many tables. However, the tables are arranged so it creates the illusion of sections. We were seated quickly at a 4 person table because that was one of the only seats that were open. On a Wednesday night, it was actually very busy. There were only two waitresses that were serving everyone. Ordering at Sushi Gawa is easy because they give you a paper menu that you mark what you would like to order. The menu also has the prices next to the dish. I found this to be helpful because some sushi bars do not have this. I ordered the Alaskan and Spider rolls. My friend ordered the edamame. Our sushi was out in less than 5 minutes. So Fast! The edamame seemed to be an endless basket for such a small price! They steamed and salted it so you could taste the flavor when you squeeze the pod out with your teeth. The alaskan was a "no frills" sushi as that it did not have any sauce or seasoning. I appreciate this because sushi that they eat in Japan is not decorated as it is in America. The Spider roll had fried crab in it. I felt like the friedness overwhelmed the crab because I couldn't taste the crab. The individual pieces were also very large, enough for me to take three comfortable bites. One of my favorite parts about Sushi Gawa is that you can make the experience as casual or as fancy as you would like. I saw two girls in jeans and hoodies and I saw two businessmen in shirts and ties. I look forward to coming back to Sushi Gawa and eating their nigiri and some of their other selections. read more

Sushi Gawa is a good place. Solid 4 stars. I got the sashimi dinner over rice and the jalapenos stuffed with spicy tuna and fried tempura style. Appetizer was very good, but not very spicy like I was hoping for. Maybe a more spicy sauce or put some of that fresh wasabi in it (which by the way was awesome and will seriously light you up). Sashimi pieces were sliced way too thin, but the quality of the fish was so high it made me forget about the cut. The dinner was a very good deal at $20. Presentation was great. The pickled veggies, microgreens, and mushrooms were a very nice touch. Service was run of the mill for this area, yet attentive. Setting seems odd as it is in between a Guitar Center and 5 guys, but inside is very nice and would make a good date spot. I may try the Lunch specials later this week. read more

Sushigawa' takoyaki appetizer and chirashi don were top notch quality, and it surprised me since I didn't expect that out of a shopping mall restaurant in central Illinois. All the ingredients were fresh, and I enjoyed the textures and flavors very much. The surprise of the night was the octopus, which was both tender and bouncy inside the dough balls and on it's own with rice. Portions are not very big, and the pieces were rather thin cuts so I could easily finished appetizer and bowl myself. ~10 tables ejected at 9:00pm, mid meal,for closing! On Valentines Day 2020 at 8pm, we had a reservation for dinner there, as we have many other times. The food is very good, however, at 8:45 we were asked if we wanted to order anything else because they're closing at 9:00. We understood that to mean they weren't seating any additional tables after 9:00pm. At 9:00pm sharp, the staff came out to the floor to usher out about 10 tables, abruptly and immediately, who were still eating. All of these individual parties were all looking at each other with confusion. I asked if they had some special event or something, and I was told no, they just close at 9. The best sushi in Central Illinois. I'd put it on par with a number of good sushi restaurants in Chicago. The only real difference is that their menu isn't as large as a big city sushi restaurant. I'm fond of the Tataki Maki. It's got a nice zing to it. The dragon roll is also very good. For the non sushi folks they have good tempura and I'm told their terriaki is good as well. Service is good all of the time with friendly wait staff. Food comes out quickly and the presentation is good. The atmosphere is also nice with a more minimalist (Japanese looking) theme. The restaurant is on the smaller side so if you go on a Friday or Saturday night be prepared to wait. The restaurant is family friendly with Japanese soda for the kids and chopstick helpers. The only warning is not to go expecting to feed the kids mac and cheese, chicken strips, hotdogs or burgers. They don't have them. Finally... go for lunch! It's quick and a good meal for the price as long as you don't go crazy on the maki and nigiri. My only complaint for lunch is they open at 11:30 and wish it would be 11. read more

Surprisingly unexpected for a small city. I had ordered takeout so I can't comment on the ambiance, but my good experience began with a phone call asking for the menu. I asked for them to fax me the menu so that I can place an order and it arrived within minutes. The menu was complete with the basics including sea urchin and white tuna. I noticed they did not have grilled hamachi collar or fatty tuna, but that's okay. I ordered some nigiri, a couple rolls, and a mixed tempura. The nigiri were well-made and the pieces were of decent quality, cut, and freshness. The tempura was good---the batter was just right and held their crunchiness even though it was take-out. It was a scene after a tornado hit. 5 of us looking around at what just happened to our table. 15 minutes before, 7 rolls arrived at our table. Now, there was smeared wasabi, and a plate of fallen crunchies. I don't think any of us even looked up. We went to town on these rolls. The Tataki maki and Tokyo maki are must trys!
