I really appreciate that they have some less common sushi options, such as inari and uni, and when I'm on an unagi kick, they have a generously sized unadon. All of the people complaining about the huge rolls apparently aren't familiar with the concept of futomaki - they're supposed to be that way. Although Peoria has many options for sushi, many of them are disappointing and overpriced. Sushigawa has stood the test of time across the street from Northwoods Mall for well over ten years. Aside from Sushi KO (formerly Sushi Popo), it is probably Peoria's longest running sushi place. Service and the quality of food has gone down slightly throughout the years. Now, you order yourself at the table and they bring it out. The interior is tastefully done and is modern chic. The gyoza and yakitori were plain. The volcano roll was small, and lacked spiciness and flavor. The star of the show was the Sushigawa Roll. There was a nice amount and the roll itself was delicious. It is one of the better rolls of sushi I have tried here. If you're a sushi enthusiast, you will enjoy Sushigawa because it is a small step above the rest in Peoria. read more

Meh. I've experienced better. Second time we have been to Sushi Gawa. I can now say with confidence we prefer Happy Fish. Sushi Gawa is a little more expensive, which is not a problem, other than the fact that we enjoy it less. I had the Chicken Teriyaki, first time I ordered non-sushi in a Sushi restaurant, but I tried some of my girlfriend's sushi. We both found it bland, as was the Terkiyaki. Also, the rolls seemed unusually large (large in diameter, just noticed another Yelper commented on how large the rolls are), which made eating them cumbersome. On the bright side, I do think their Miso soup is better than Happy Fish's, but Happy Fish gives it to you for free, while Gawa charges. It isn't bad, but I prefer Happy Fish. Try, then decide for yourself. read more

Not crazy about the place. Rolls here are mostly fusion that lean on the sweet and saucy side and sit on a higher price range. Fish quality is not stellar, but not foul enough for the Illinois Health Department to intervene. My advice is to steer clear of the raw items and go for cooked rolls if you're concerned about compromising your healthy status quo. The rice used to pack the sushi is chunky and excessive with the ratio of rice to filling at approximately 5:1. They do have one roll (with lobster or another fish, I think tuna) that is set ablaze, served flaming. The proper way to eat this is to let the fire die down naturally, takes a few minutes, and then using only chopsticks, pry open the aluminum foil (if applicable) and consume, careful not to burn your mouth in the process. Whatever you do, do not attempt to weasel your chopsticks between the flames. The flames will lick you and you'll be licking your wound, or worse yet your chopsticks will become engulfed and you'll have no other choice but to start fire juggling. The reason I go in detail describing the process of consumption is because at my latest visit, two tables near me ordered the dish and had no idea when and how to deal with the flame. I've personally never tired this specific roll here, but have had several flaming rolls in the past and they've all kinda tasted the same to me, it's definitely an aesthetic show piece rather than a gourmet delicacy. If you're somewhat of an exhibitionist and want to impress your dinner companion, order the flaming roll. Overall the place is clean and the wait staff is overly polite. Wait time for your order is reasonable, rolls usually come out in less than 20 mins. read more

I wish I'd been to Sushigawa sooner! It looks like it'd be tiny from outside, but it's pretty deep and there are "sectioned" areas. I came for dinner on a Saturday with my boyfriend and it was very busy. We waited about half an hour before we were seated, but it was worth it. It's pretty easy to order since you get a sheet to fill in how many of what you want. Wait time isn't too long before your rolls come out. The Pink Lady is delicious and I would recommend it to anyone. I also had the Hawaiian just because I'll try any maki that has mango on it, and my boyfriend had spicy tuna. I've never actually eaten at the restaurant, I've only carried out, but the staff is incredibly friendly when you walk in the door. The sushi is pretty fresh and priced rather reasonably. I do have to say that I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer and when I got home, only about a 10 min drive, it wasn't what I expected. I love soft shell crab and it is usually prepared lightly battered and deep fried...when I got home to eat it, to my surprise the batter was much heavier and the crab was harder than normal. Atmosphere: The place is dim and clean. clean This gives a low key feeling and a higher class to the place. The chatter is not loud and a comfortable background noise while you eat. Food: I gotten 2 smoked salmon nigiri, eel roll, Philly roll with takoyaki as an appetizer. The takoyaki was as I expected, tasty. The roll has the eel on the outside and the cucumber wrapped in the rice. I have not seen a place that places the eel on the outside when the eel is a roll. This makes the eel roll look much better and much more appetizing. The taste was spot on for the eel and was worth the 6.95 I paid for it. The Philly roll is just cream cheese and smoked salmon. I am pleasantly surprised that the cream cheese did not overwhelm the smoke salmon and that the flavor of the salmon came through. Sushigawa is our go-to sushi house for the Peoria area. While there are others, which are worth going to for their specialties, Sushigawa has many reasons for being our favorite. First, I always judge a good sushi house by two dishes: Futo Maki and Agudeshi Tofu. For the Peoria area, Sushigawa makes the best. When in stock, they also have the best Mochi. Very kid friendly. They nearly always offer cheaters for our kids. They also have Japanese Strawberry Soda, which my girls love. We usually order the Rainbow role, which is very good. And I always get a large hot sake. Been here more times than I can count and have always had a great meal. Finally, they offer take-out. On a typical weeknight, I'll pop in to order take-home sushi, then stop two doors down for Fresh Market for light grocery shopping. read more

So sad to return after a long hiatus and find that teriyaki needs to be removed from the name of the restaurant. Nice server, good assorted tempura, same simple iceberg salad, but the miso soup was served warm, in a cold bowl, and the beef teriyaki was tough and dry. Seems silly to complain about the serving size, as bad as it was, but you would think they could spring for a little better cut of meat considering it was probably only 4 oz. I know miso soup is usually kind of cloudy, but tonight it was bad cloudy. The sushi was okay, rice cooked to a good texture, but I prefer mine more highly seasoned. Went for lunch (10/16/19) and was surprised at the ambiance present at a strip mall sushi joint. Ordered 5pc lunch special and calamari. Would be four stars if This review is based off of just the sushi, but the calamari kind of ruined it for me. I consider myself a calamari connoisseur and this was not good calamari. The plating on both the calamari and sushi was nice, staff was very friendly which was a plus. Only other thing is that the red snapper was tilapia. This has been confirmed because I ate lunch with my friend who is a sushi chef and can tell the difference. I guess this is to be expected in small town sushi joints. read more
