Had lunch there for the first time this past Monday. The tables are crammed together and you have to raise your voice to converse with your companions sitting across from you. Of course, patrons in adjacent tables can overhear details of your conversation. I had perused their online menu beforehand, and recalled that with their combination lunch, you can choose two items from their lunch menu, which lists, among other dishes, Beef Teriyaki and Katsu. When I mentioned to the server that I was considering this, she informed me that katsu would be an additional $2.00. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and inquired about the combination with tempura and was told it includes two shrimps and vegetables. I finally decided on the beef teriyaki/tempura combo and asked for vegetables only. The server then announced that it would be an additional $1.00. I said, "Fine," but wondered if the price of veggies had exceeded the costs of shrimp. Food-wise, I found that the batter on all the vegetable tempura was too thick and heavy, while the beef was over-cooked and dry. The multi-grain rice was okay. Out of curiosity, as I was composing this review, I viewed Sushiholic's online menu again, and it does state that the combination lunch items include katsu. The only stipulation is that Sashimi is $3.00 extra. My impression is that the business model of this restaurant is to nickle and dime their patrons. The sushi here is good, but it's nothing special. Considering the price and the portions, I expected a bit more of a "wow" - especially when reading all the positive reviews. The seating was also very close. There was comfortable space between each table, but a little too close for me when I can hear the conversations next to me on both sides and get a good idea what they are looking at on their phone. A great sushi place in Novato!?! Yup... you heard right, buster. In a strip mall nearby Costco to boot. The rolls here rock - the Sub1000, Nuclear Crunch, and Dragon rolls all rival the best I've had anywhere else in the Bay Area. And they ALWAYS have a great selection of super fresh, unique nigiri to choose from. And unlike some sushi spots, where you are really limited to just sushi or sashimi, these guys have some killer curry and udon dishes if you want to add some heft to your meal. One thing that really jumps out at me is your ability to order multi-grain rice with your rolls! Nice change of pace that really works well with many of their dishes. The decor works great considering what they likely started with -- very creative use of bamboo, paint and faux leaves to liven the spot up! And best of all... the staff is really lights out fantastic! Everyone we have dealt with has really made us feel welcome and been perfectly taken care of. Went here with my bf for lunch on Saturday. We were running errands and drove around the shopping center for something to eat. I haven't had sushi in a long while so my bf said we should eat here. The wait staff were nice a friendly. We were greeted right away and seated. There were about 7 groups of ppl dining already. My bf and I ordered 4 rolls to share. We ordered the Jumping Tail, Spider Roll, Lobster Rolls, and the Godzilla Roll. The rolls came out on one plate and was nicely presented. The plate looked pretty. The rolls were clean, as in, not with a lot of fluff or sauce. I'm use to eating sushi with cream sauce on top (which I actually like and missed). The Jumping Tail roll was spicy. My bf picked that because it had jalapeño in it, which I wasn't aware of until after I put it in my mouth. He enjoyed it. I thought it was ok. I can't really eat spicy food so I stayed away from that the entire meal. The other rolls were just ok. They all had carrots in them, which I do not like. The only time I ever get carrots in my sushi are at sushi restaurants that are owned by other people who are not Japanese, so I'm thinking these people are not Japanese (nothing against that of course, I just think its weird to put carrots in it). We've dined here twice now. Both times, it was a late dinner after 9pm and we appreciated that they are still serving after 9pm. They have a neat modern decor, and believe it or not, many of the employees are ACTUALLY Japanese! (Who would've known... all the way up in Novato lol) I like that they have a good selection of traditional, simple maki/nigiri/a la carte menu, but also have lots of interesting, Americanized rolls (49ers, Spider, what have you...) I do not agree with the concept of making sushi rice out of multi-grain rice so we stick with white rice. Overall, I do think they have pretty good food. Fish are tasty and fresh. (FYI to those that complained that some of their fish was frozen... you'd be surprised how many fish are immediately frozen while still on ship on the way to fish markets. Yes, that includes Bluefin Tuna that are sold in Tsukiji market. Whether or not it's been frozen is NOT the issue. The question is whether or not it's been PROPERLY frozen and properly thawed.) The hang up I have over this place, is the fact that their shari (sushi rice) seems to be a bit inconsistent. The first time we dined here, I didn't notice this too much, but tonight when we ordered some rolls here, my immediate reaction was "hmm, they cooked the rice too soft and mushed up the shari too much when seasoning it". That is a pet peeve to me, and many sushi fanatics. In fact, in Japanese standards, you are not a sushi restaurant when you can't get the shari right. Also both times we've eaten here, with a few specialty rolls and a couple regular rolls and an appetizer and a small bottle of beer, the bill comes up to 55-65 bucks before tip. I find that a bit on the expensive side... The above two points constitute a 2 star deduction in my book. I'd definitely come back here when we have fat wallets or when we have late dinners and no other Japanese place is open in the vicinity of where we live... but I do feel that Sushiholic has room for improvement. read more

My first visit, the sushi was good and I'd like to return to try some of the other dishes. I had tuna, yellowtail, and the snow crab, big pieces and fresh. The seaweed salad was unfortunately not much different than what you'd find in a supermarket (the version at Taki was much better). Ambiance, well, for a relatively small room the noise levels were acceptable, especially on an early Saturday night, I'd expected worse, you can carry on a conversation. Plenty of seats were available at the L shaped sushi bar at the back. There are two tables with umbrellas outside if you get claustrophobic. Fast and friendly service, everyone here worked as a team to make sure our table was taken care of. Outstanding hot tea (the best I've ever had), and great food. I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon Hot noodle and it was a large portion that had two crispy shrimp tempura on the side. The person I was with ordered the eel, which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The salmon roe on the sushi was marinated with a salty taste and extremely fresh. Salmon belly sushi was amazing and tamago was on point. I was debating between two and three stars for this place. First attempt to eat here was a complete disaster. It was shortly after they opened, and as is normal for new restaurants in Marin, they were packed. The lack of service however went well beyond normal busy bad. I was so mad that I didn't know if I'd ever give them a second chance. But it's been long enough that this weekend we decided to go ahead and give them a shot. This time was much better. Still busy, but we were waived right in to a table. I thought we were off to a great start. Then, we waited. And waited. No menu, no water, nothing. I was pissed that I'd allowed myself to go through this again. Finally someone came over and asked if we were waiting for our order. I (very unhappily) said "no, we haven't even seen a menu." She promptly brought the menu, apologized profusely, and from then on the service improved. So why did I consider three stars? Well, honestly, the food was really good. Some of the better sushi I've had in awhile. We ordered a dragon roll, mango 10, and Nuclear Crunch roll. All three were excellent. We did not try the multi-grain rice, but I think I am willing to go back and try again. I'm open to the possibility that this star rating could improve with time, but for now, it is nice to have a sushi place in Novato close to home. **This ended up with a two star rating because despite their food being yummy, the service is consistently bad. I suggested this place and she was game to try (we were having sushi cravings apparently): Food: until this visit, I had never been asked in a sushi restaurant "white rice or multi-grain?". Came with a side salad and rice (I asked for "white" rice this time). The lunch was tasty and cooked to my satisfaction. My co-worker enjoyed her meal as well, along with the Spider Roll. Service: got plenty of refills on my tea. Waiting for the check took a few minutes longer than expected, but not a big issue as we were in no particular hurry to go back to work. Staff seemed friendly enough. Atmosphere: mellow. No one was talking particularly loud. We enjoyed looking at the food going to other tables. Ambiance and decor are very nice, the bathroom is clean, spacious, and well stocked, and the staff are attentive, helpful and super-friendly. It's not my FAVORITE sushi bar, but it's the best sushi bar in and around Novato. This is by far the best sushi in Novato. The sushi is fresh, flavorful and, most of all, creative. They've done a really nice job decorating the space. The service is friendly and consistent. There is a nice selection of sakes available, but if you enjoy wine with your sushi, you'll find there is a nice selection of half bottles that are great for a lunch for two. We used to go to our neighborhood spot in Ignacio, but we have found the food and service at Sushiholic is so much better that it is worth the drive. read more

The fish is good, not great. But solid and consistent. I love the purple multi grain rice!!! Tastes a lot better and makes your plate look a hell of a lot more interesting! The rolls to go for imo are the sweet hawaiian, which has yummy lemon on top, nuclear crunch, 112 special if you like scallops, and the chefs special and godzilla rolls are always sure to impress visually and palate wise. I go here about 1-2 times a month. Not jaw-dropping, but nice for Novato. Nice prices, the most expensive roll is $12.95 for the godzilla, which is actually two rolls stacked on top of each other and is enough for most people for lunch. Definitely a good value. read more

Really great experience. Knowing that they are usually busy, called to make a reservation for our party of 6. They were really accommodating, and we were seated right away. Service was attentive and helpful, and it was a busy night. We were a group with a sushi lover, and a diner who had never had sushi, and we were all pleased with our dinner. Those of us eating sushi enjoyed the 112, 49er, Godzilla, and caterpillar rolls. We, however, did not like the dragon roll, but that is probably just a matter of taste. I had the nuclear roll and prawn tempura. So good and fresh! The white spicy tuna roll came with crunch on top and the tempura order came with 6 shrimp, wow! Next time I'll try their version of a Philadelphia roll, my other favorite. I highly recommend! Waitress was fast and I got to watch the chefs expertly roll sushi at the sushi bar.
