It's a skip. I ordered the bento box lunch special, which is two items for $17.95. The meal started with miso soup and a salad. I've had better miso soup from the grocery store that comes in the packet. The salad dressing tasted like bottled French or Thousand Island. I usually love the homemade salad dressing served at Japanese restaurants with a zesty tang. For my bento box I got the mixed tempura and tonkatsu. The tonkatsu was overcooked, dry and flavorless. The tempura was decent, but not good enough by Japanese restaurant standards. Even the little orange wedge was terrible. I had asked for water, which never arrived. The ambiance is OK. You guessed it , I won't be coming back.

Matsuyama is doing everything better. The beef teriyaki is more tender. The chicken katsu crispier. The California rolls creamier. I had the 3 piece lunch combo. The pre ration was neat as a pin. With the miso soup, salad and rice, there is so much food it will easily make 2 meals. I was sad to learn the owners had retired had but glad to hear Matsuyama is still in very capable hands.

Came on a Saturday night and had some yummy sushi. Ambience: this place is under new ownership. They upgraded the interior design and added a sushi display. It looks nice than before! Food: tried their sushi and sashimi. The uni and amaebi were super fresh and sweet. The sushi rolls on their chef's special menu were full of fish. Overall, the price was reasonable and the food tasted great. Service: the sushi chef was really nice and very welcoming. I'll visit more often for sure.

I've been coming to this establishment for the last 8 years and seeing the upgrades the new ownership has done is amazing! When placing my order the owner told me it may take 10-15 mins because everything is cooked to order, gotta love that! I would strongly recommend Matsuyama to any relative and friend. I love supporting a family owned business that goes the extra mile for their customers. The sushi was fresh and tempura was perfectly cooked. Do yourself a favor and get in here before the news spreads and you can't get a seat. Pro Tip: when ordering your sushi ask Dragon for the Japanese imported wasabi, it really makes all the difference.

I come here every now and then and the food is always amazing. Really good. Today I decided to try their sushi, nigiri to be specific. I asked if they had any toro and the server seemed very unsure about what I was asking for. That should have been enough for me to not order it lol. He came back and said they have yellowtail (hamachi) toro. So I ordered it, along with a bento box. The toro arrived, and immediately it didn't look like hamachi toro. It looked like regular hamachi. I took a bite and it was tough. The complete opposite of what toro should be. Toro should be fatty and melt in your mouth. Completely disappointed. Besides that, the bento box was amazing. Really really tasty. Highly recommend.

Welcome back... the decor has improved and the food is very much the same. The most affordable sushi in Marin, but not the best.

We've actually been here before, which is why we made a reservation this time, we already knew it would be worth it. We ordered several appetizers to share, including the shrimp and scallop dumplings, asparagus gyoza, and a few other small plates. Everything was delicious. For entrees, I ordered the seafood nigiri, while others at the table had the ramen, beef teriyaki, and salmon teriyaki. Every dish came out fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. It's one of those places where everyone at the table is happy with what they ordered, and the quality has been consistent every time we've visited. Definitely a great stop after a day in wine country.

The fish for nigiri is fresh, there is great variety, and the prices are reasonable--that's the good part--and you'd think that would be good enough: it is not. The bad: their wasabi is crap. It is fall apart grainy, NOT HOT AT ALL and there is little of it on the plate. Every visit we had to ask several times to get enough that equals a normal serving. What's with this, honestly? This last time, the sushi rolls had a shockingly scant amount of rice on the outside--I wish I had taken a photo--as if the kitchen had run out of rice and they were stretching it, or they couldn't get it to stick. I have had better rolls from Whole Foods. The salmon served in the bento box suffered the same problem as previous times: undercooked in the middle. Now for the tamago, the rolled egg omelette: it's served absolutely frigid, rendering it flavorless. As it thaws to room temperature, it becomes a spongey bite. It is very sad that they treat this this minor menu item with disregard. Ambiance: For sitting inside in any of the corner tables, they should provide a small cordless table lamp, especially in the winter time, because lighting is so dim it is difficult to read the menu. The patio outside is delightful for fresh air in the summertime, though it's just a bunch of tables. They need plants, string of lights, something. Kudos to the attentive waitstaff. Still, we wont be back. It's not like we haven't given them a chance, multiple times.

Coming through the clothed doorway from the bland parking lot, you feel like you've been dropped into a top-rated Japanese neighborhood restaurant that is both cozy and welcoming. We have been there 3 times now, and after Friday night, it is officially our go-to family destination for special occasions. We're still talking today about the unique specials we devoured and the ridiculously high quality of the fish and its preparation. One thing though, if you need your sushi rolls to have mayo toppings, go elsewhere. The chefs are serious and the food is traditional for a very good reason. 5 stars every time!
