Love the aburi sushi. The nigiri is the perfect size and the rice falls apart perfectly. The rolls are tasty as well. The quality of their cooked dishes are good too. I've eaten here around 5-7 times and each time I have been happy with the food and service. The prices are around 15% more expensive but I am willing to pay it. The only thing I am not a fan of is their little figurine set they've got out front. Not sure what the point is. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot. Period. I have eaten a lot of the a la carte items and nothing has been subpar. The sushi fish is fresh, yummy, perfect in texture, taste and appearance. I recently moved to Burnaby almost a year ago, and I tried many sushi restaurants here and in downtown Vancouver. But this restaurant is hands down the best sushi restaurant I've encountered so far. It's in a very convenient location and the staff are all really sweet and efficient. If I could, I would rate this 4.5/5 only because it's such a small restaurant and I often had to wait 10-15 minutes to be seated. However, it's totally worth the wait! read more

mmmm, a definite win in my books. This place isn't comparable to the budget sushi places (like sushi california, sushi garden and the like). The prices are a bit higher, but the quality is much better. I ordered takeout, and got just enough food for 5 people for about $75: - spicy salmon sashimi, 10 pieces - *toro & negi / ponzu sauce, 8 pieces - *soft shell crab roll - organic alaska roll - *red dynamite roll (dynamite with spicy salmon) - gyoza (this was just OK, i'd skip out next time) - gommae (really really really tiny portion for $3.50.. wouldn't order again) - wakame salad (very reasonable portion) - *BBQ tuna roll - *seared hotate (scallop) carpaccio A few of my favorites are the starred ones, while I did really like most of everything else. Super fresh, and you can't go wrong with anything thats just been lightly torched or seared. Yum! I would skip out on the gyoza and gommae though. Wasn't that impressed with the gyoza (though it could be b/c it was cold by the time we got home), and the gommae was a ridiculously small portion, especially when compared to the wakame. I'd give Sushimoto 4 stars if it weren't for their slow service. Like, almost painfully slow. Otherwise it's a great alternative to Sushi Garden in terms of quality, and overall a nice Burnaby sushi gem. The salmon belly aburi was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and is 5 stars all by itself. They have some good specialty rolls and the toro was nice and buttery soft. I would come back for the salmon belly alone, but I hope service will be a bit faster next time. read more

Came here on my birthday super excited, the food portions were small and we paid so much for small rolls. When I mean small I mean there were only two slices of avocados in a whole roll. Not much I was disappointed, and haven't returned since. But the sushi is good. But not worth the portion for the price. read more

this place is ok. i would give 2 1/2 stars if i could. i have read some great reviews of this place and thought i had to check it out. it is also pretty close to my place so heck ya, definitely. but it was disappointing. i've ordered tamago maki, spicy dynamite roll, agidashi tofu, hamachi sashimi, tuna gomae, ocean roll and tempura udon. tamago wasn't made in the house (store bought - guessing it's from sysco). dynamite roll, the ebi tempura wasn't tempura at all - it was a frozen, factory battered shrimp. they can't possibly fry anything in there since there's no vent. tuna gomae was too sweet. agidashi tofu and ocean roll were average. tempura udon was just not great at all - again, "fake tempura" and bland soup, although the noodle was a good quality. so overall, it was less than ok. i usually go to nao sushi in burnaby and will just stick with that place. read more

The only thing I actually like about this restaurant is the food. Aside from that, I think the service needs some improvement. One thing I noticed is that the staff don't communicate very well. I've had my table given away twice already: 1) One of the waitresses just assumed I was waiting for take out when her colleague had already confirmed that it would be a 10-15 minute wait for a table. I basically waited for 15 minutes, and she gave the table away to a couple that just walked in. 2) Same deal. I was waiting for a table and the waitress already knew we were waiting for a table, but she still gave it to another party of 2 that just walked in. Seriously? I went there with my boyfriend because of my boyfriend strog recommendation. Food portion not that bad but i agree that a bit pricy compare to other local resturants. Service is below the expectation. Order food and it seems like keep delay because all server and cheif seem to focus on too much take out order versus someone who order food on table. Order zaru soba, it takes fourty minutes to have and when i ask to server whether it has taken order correctly. Server simply resonponses that cook noodle require a lot of time to prepare( like 40min). I thought they are actaully make the noodle on their own in order to take time like fourty minutes but taste like exactly same as regular unfrozen cold noodle one that sell at TNT. I have been going to Sushimoto for 4 years now and originally if I were to rate this restaurant I would have given it 5 stars. However last night (1 month from the last time I ordered there) I placed my regular order and was very excited to get home and feast! I opened up my containers and the rolls were HALF THE SIZE THEY USED TO BE!! Same price but less rice and less filling now. This place is a great little spot. I ordered nigiri sushi and the fish was fresh and delicious. The server let us know that they typically make the sushi small, but if we want it bigger they can do that for us. The pieces were small, but they were all really good. The sushi chef was also nice enough to give us a couple complimentary dishes, baked salmon head, and 3 pieces of seared salmon sushi (which was delicious!). I will definitely go back. read more

Really delicious sushi of good quality here. Original selections and items that are not available as often in this part of Burnaby such as Hama. This is more of a sushi bar than Japanese restaurant meaning they don't really offer full cooked menu such as teriyaki, udon etc. go here if you want to eat for pleasure but not if you are wanting to get full for cheap. I really enjoy this place, have been here 10+ times and it is pretty consistent. We dine out a lot and have two kids 10 & 13 who love cooked Japanese items, so we Dube here infrequently and only in date nights or evenings put with friends. Prices are slightly higher than local Japanese restaurants but they are not catering to same market. Closest you will get to sushi as art in the area. read more

Walking by this place, you'd think it was any other sushi joint in Vancouver serving up cheap eats near a skytrain. Well, pause for a minute and take a look inside. You'll find an eclectic mix of cute Japanese paraphernalia (pufferfish with googly eyes), as well as an extensive collection of action figurines. The service is friendly, though unobtrusive. The ambience is clean and well-lit. Menu is extensive made of special rolls, and classic standard Japanese eats. We ordered the tuna tataki (delicious, though with a strong garlic bite and aftertaste that lasted hours), bbq tuna roll (blew my mind - wow!), lion roll (skip this one), negihamachi roll (standard), and salmon sashimi (not bad, but not out of this world). This place is absolutely amazing. Great service and food. But it's a small place so you have to go early for a table.

Tried to make reservations 1 hour before arrival and the waitress curtly says reservations must be made 24 hours ahead of time. When we arrived, we waited 10 minutes for the waitress to bring any water. We had to get our own menus when we realized after 10 minutes that she wasn't going to bring us any because all the walk-in customers and pickup orders get served first. Service was rude and you felt like such a burden asking for anything. You felt like they were doing is such a huge favour by letting us eat there. No refills on water. When she brought the cheque she makes sure to say that she forgot to mention they charge 18% gratuity for parties of 8 or more and that she wouldn't charge us the gratuity because she forgot to tell us this. How nice of her considering the service was so terrible that she didn't even deserve a tip at all. The food was like all Korean made Japanese food-mediocre. read more

Always excellent. The sushi here is the best you'll get in Burnaby, and the lunch specials are a great value. This is one of those restaurants that although I visit frequently, I still haven't tasted 50% of the menu. Although I'm sure the rest are great, I'm way too attached to all the items I've already ordered. The decor is great and full of personality. They do offer a good selection of Japanese alcohol as well. The sushi rice is made perfectly, which is something that I can't say for many of the sushi places on Hastings. Service is great, but very "Asian". I.e there's not much conversation but they're friendly and attentive. Personally I prefer this kind of service but I know it's not for everyone. The only real downside I can think of is that their menu is almost completely sushi and various tapas, so if you're looking for some non-sushi mains, you'll have some difficulty. All in all, if you love sushi, you'll love sushimoto. read more

The food is superb and the service is great although the price is a bit on the expensive side. Sushimoto is one of the restaurants that give you downtown quality eating with a downtown pricing bill as well. Don't get me wrong, I think the quality justifies the price. I usually have the seared hotate capaccio, the raw shrimp body w/ head fried, the seared saba and a few others. Some of the sushi roll are pretty meh but their sashimi are usually very fresh. One time I had the hamachi sashimi and the fish just melts in your mouth. Sushimoto is not your everyday sushi join like sushi town or sushi garden where you can stuff your face with a good quantity of food but it's a place where you are there to enjoy the downtown-esque quality of food. read more

Wonderful gem of a restaurant in the Burnaby Lougheed area. Prior to discovering this place I frequented Sushi Garden and what a difference between the two! The ambiance, service, and offerings are miles better. It can be a little on the pricier side, with some of their specialty rolls in particular, but I have yet to try something there that I haven't liked whether it was a regular roll, special roll, sashimi, or their cooked foods. There can be a wait on the evenings on the weekends but the lines moves at a reasonable pace. Parking can also be an issue but it is adjacent to Holdom sky train station. read more
