    In the area for an eye appointment and stopped by Sushi Aji for lunch with my son. They do have 2 lunch specials: $16.25 for 3 items + miso soup or $12.95 for an item from 3 groups + miso soup. We opted to try both. We arrived just as they opened and secured booth seating...my preference. We ordered right away after viewing the menu posted outside and the food came out pretty quick. I enjoyed the tuna avocado roll and the yam tempura roll. I was not a fan of their dynamite roll as very small amount of prawn and too much rice. But it is good value sushi, the service was good and we both came away full and satisfied. It was a positive food experience.

    Located by Kingsway & Joyce - plenty of metered parking along the street , might find some free ones on the side streets. Place was not insanely busy for a Friday night dinner. - tables and booths nicely spread out giving you some space to converse and such - did not pay attention to music, but i believe something was playing softly. Service was pretty quick and the team seemed pretty friendly - there is some budget friendly combo options on the menu! Although budget friendly , I don't feel like it was authentic Japanese sushi - beef was pretty dry and lacking in flavors - California roll almost tasted salty... sashimi however was pretty fresh - but somewhat tasted rubbery.... Tempura was crisp , but maybe a bit more batter would of been good. Anyways - with competition being tight on Kingsway, this is a miss for me!

    We tried their $16.95 any three item with miso soup and left really full! We did add an additional order of takoyaki and the whole meal came to $45 with tip which is very reasonable. Service for food was also very fast, we had to wait a bit longer to be seated as it was after 6pm on a weekend. Affordable, basic sushi. Really enjoyed the saucy beef don, lots of flavour. The tamago maki was not sweet or had enough flavour. Miso soup was a disappointment, not umami enough. Takoyaki was crispy on the outside and chewier on the inside. 2/6 Takoyaki only had a tiny bit of octopus in it.

    Checked out this place on a road trip to Canada 3/2/2025. Place is clean, service was excellent and the food was fresh and good, we had a mixture of different foods from sashimi, tempura, sushi, grilled squid, karaage chicken, and all was prepared with excellence. Sorry didn't take much pics, just ate up!! For our first time in Canada, glad we stopped in here.

    The food is amazing! The service is impeccable! Love the music and the general ambiance. Quality is so good and the price is affordable for anyone. Definitely 5 stars. Favourite date spot!

    This place is definitely no Sushi by Yuji and to compare them would not be fair. Sushi Aji is a Chinese run Sushi joint that is known for big portions and affordable eats. I've been meaning to try this place for awhile and a friend suggested trying it out for Saturday. We lucked out and was able to get parking practically in front of the restaurant on Kingsway. Parking is only $1/hour so no breaking the bank here. We got there around 7:30pm on a Saturday evening and the place was busy. Restaurant was smaller than expected but it still had a decent amount of tables. They had 3 large parties there and it took about a 7 minute wait before we got a table for two. The menu had all your usual suspects - standard rolls, oshi rolls, bento boxes, party trays, and etc. The first page listed any 3 items listed for $14.50 including miso soup - a great deal! I ordered this set and decided on prawn tempura (3 pieces), salmon sashimi don, and a salmon avocado roll. Decided to add a regular prawn sunomono too. My friend ordered salmon oshi roll, mango avocado roll, and spicy dynamite roll. We were served tea and water promptly. After a short while, my shrimp sunomono arrived. It was of a good portion and definitely worth the price. The shrimp tempura came shortly after and arrived hot and fresh. After that it took awhile before the rest of our meal arrived - probably around 15 minutes. The kitchen and servers were constantly busy but the food for the 3 large parties and others were put in first before ours. In addition, the takeout orders were a steady flow. Once our sushi rolls came, it was a flurry. My salmon sashimi don came with 3 pieces of salmon and A LOT of sushi rice. It was okay for a value meal and the salmon avocado roll was solid. The $14.50 meal was pretty much enough to fill me up. My friend enjoyed the salmon oshi roll but found the Dynamite roll to be average. He quite enjoyed the mango avocado roll. This isn't a premium authentic Japanese joint so it shouldn't be judged as such. What it is is a restaurant that is busy, serves solid food, good quantity servings, and is affordable.

    I frequent Sushi Aji as it is close to work. Not expensive and I like the taste. It gets really busy during dinner time, I have ordered take out and they have said that it takes 30 Minutes.

    I came here for lunch with my son today since it was close by but I really shouldn't have come. I usually prefer having sushi at a Japanese owned restaurant and hopefully the sushi chefs are Japanese too. I was disappointed when I heard the sushi chefs and staff all spoke Cantonese. The service was excellent. They were efficient and friendly but the food was lacking in presentation and flavour. Sometimes when you stare at a sushi roll, you can tell if the chef put effort in making it. Clearly, I cannot say that because the sushi rolls were rather sloppy looking. I don't really know how to explain it, but very average sushi. Good thing is this place is inexpensive, but honestly I should have gone to a nicer sushi restaurant since I rarely eat sushi.

    This place reminds me of the many sushi restaurants along Commercial Drive which have the "choose 3 items for $10 or so" combo. I think this is more common for the sushi restaurants in Vancouver itself. I hardly see this promotion in Burnaby or New West. The food is typical, nothing really special. I had the corn croquette which was surprisingly good. Light crispy but not oily. The salmon avocado roll and salmon donburi were ok. Like other Yelpers mentioned, the salmon donburi came with 3 slices of salmon and lots of rice. Service was ok though they did not come round to top up the tea or water. You need to flag them down. For basic sushi and a filling meal, come here. If you want a more refined food experience or better quality and smaller portion, then go next door to Hyoga which is proudly proclaimed to be Japanese-run.

    Great takeout sushi. Called beforehand, went in to pick up around 6:20pm, Saturday night and it was a full house, but it is a small restaurant. Was out the door with my order in under 5 minutes. We got party tray A, the spicy combo and the ichiban roll and it was more than enough to fill 5 of us. I loved the ichiban roll, it was my first time trying mango in sushi and it did not disappoint!

    This sushi place is so worth it! Got the 3 item combo + miso soup for each member of my family (3 of us!) and it was amazing. Everything was so fresh and the portions were huge! I believe the combo price has gone up to $14.25 now, but with all the options to choose from and the bit portions, you definitely get your money's worth. My favourite was the Ika Karage (Deep fried squid), the portion was really big plus it tasted basically like fried squid from the night market! I will definitely be back to sushi aji :)

Same with the unagi bowl, couple small pieces of unagi cut up... The appetizers were actually the highlight of the meal and ended up being more memorable than my main course. I kept waiting for a dish to really wow me, but nothing stood out enough to make me crave a return visit. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items, because I know this place has plenty of fans. Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but based on this visit, I don't see myself making a special trip back.

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. Total 10 guests today. Looks like 4 more guests can be served for the maximum seating. The server came by when the course is served to explain each item. The appetizers have three dishes. The tempura is freshly made and hot. The cooked fish tastes a bit fishy to my likely. The chawanmushi is lukewarm which I wish to be hotter. It then follows by 8 nigiri sushi with brown rice - really like the texture and (small) portion of rice with each nigiri. Fresh ingredients. I asked for low sodium option however the first few nigiri is a bit too salty and I have notified the server so the chef can adjust immediately. I enjoy the Hokkaido uni nigiri the last smoked fish nigiri the most. The fresh crab and salmon roe rice and beef soba noodles at the end have a nice touch of finesse. There are a number of birthday celebrations and they asked for names to acknowledge and celebrate the birthdays. A little musical piano "performance" for the happy birthday song. At this price point it's worth a try however not likely regular visit.

Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
