I make this my go to sushi spot for lunch anytime I'm in town. The lunch specials are reasonably priced for the quality. The sashimi lunch is my favorite, it comes with miso soup. The miso soup here IS SO GOOD! I levitate every time I take the first sip. The sashimi here is so fresh and buttery. The fish dissolves in my tongue with each bite. I've been thinking about coming back here for months. Places in my part of Katy don't have sashimi this fresh for such an affordable price. Highly recommend coming here for lunch! My bf and I were here visiting some friends, and they said this place had some great reviews so we all decided to try it out. OMG best. Decision. Ever!! If I lived here, I'd be a regular. We ended up getting the unagi king roll (10/10), crazy couple (10/10), paradise (9/10), Goldburg (9/10), and Alamo (9/10). While the unagi king and crazy couple were the standouts for me, everything was really good. This past Sunday our family friends, Dr. Tan and Malou invited us to lunch. They suggested Sushishima Castle Hills. I've never been to this location but often frequented the Vineyard location. Willie was a familiar face as we've seen him in the Vineyard location. He was very attentive and took good care of us. We started with the Agedashi Tofu and Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. Everything was amazing--from the very first bite to the last. Our server Bastian was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. We started with the shishito peppers and some gyozas as appetizers. My partner had the miso soup, and I chose the mushroom soup, which was incredibly rich in flavor. Alright, so I found myself at Sushishma, indulging in what can only be described as a rollercoaster of a night. Joined by an old mate from high school--you know the type. Super popular back then, played both football and chess (I know, a weird combo), but now can only talk about his glory days. Tough scene, really. I mean, I came for sushi, not a TED Talk on his high school highlights. We started off by ordering three rolls, and let me tell you, the Rainbow Roll was absolutely banging. Always my go-to--fresh, colorful, and as reliable as that one good decision I made in 2007. Then came the Chef's Specialty Roll, which I couldn't even begin to explain. Whatever magic the chef is working back there, it was a masterpiece. And lastly, this spicy number--jalapeños and salmon, with a bit of a kick. I couldn't tell you the name of it, but it had me sweating in all the best ways. For good measure, I threw in two pieces of fatty tuna sashimi--because I'm a man of taste, and if you're not getting sashimi at a sushi joint, what are you even doing? That tuna was melt-in-your-mouth, buttery perfection. It was like the sushi version of a warm hug from a loved one. And I needed it because, by this point, my mate had hit peak "Remember when I scored that winning touchdown" mode. Now, onto the real highlight of the evening: sake. Not one bottle, not two--oh no, lads, we polished off three bottles of sake. Each sip was smoother than the last, and before I knew it, the room had a delightful spin to it. Sake is dangerous like that--creeping up on you until suddenly you're dialing up an Uber home because walking isn't in the cards anymore. By the time the third bottle was done, my mate was still talking about his high school heroics, but honestly, I'd stopped paying attention. I was too busy savoring the sushi and the sweet, sweet buzz of sake. All in all, Sushishma delivered. Amazing rolls, stellar sashimi, and enough sake to make me forget half the night. Four stars because my mate's nostalgic ramblings nearly made me lose my appetite--but the food? Unbeatable. Just make sure you pace yourself on the sake, or you'll be seeing stars before the night's over. read more

Was visiting from WA state and my brother who lives in Texas took me here for AYCE sushi. Great looking restaurant, great ambiance, spacious and clean. Customer service was great. We were given a sample sushi special they randomly make and serve. It was delicious. My only complaint was their system encountered a mishap that caused our order as well as others to be delayed, but the options on sushi rolls, taste and freshness was phenomenal! Specifically the Yaki Soba combination (beef, chicken, and shrimp), it was bland and the beef was chewy. The sushi rolls were tasty, but for all three rolls, we could have used more than a tiny pinch of wasabi. However, the standout was the Hamachi Kama dinner as it was very delicious! Yum! We had dinner here tonight and were impressed by the food offerings and service. Our server Bastiaan was very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed for our meal. We tried the shrimp and vegetable tempura as well as the gyoza for appetizers. We also ordered the "nice to meat you" yakiniku - my favorite was the short rib which had a nice marinade. Yesterday, I went for my monthly luncheon with my fellow retired teachers. This year, I asked other people to choose all the venues for the year. Sushishima was the one selected for January. It was the first time in the seven years of our group getting together that we ventured into the realm of Japanese food. I was really excited to go there. Unfortunately, our group wasn't feeling it, and only three of us actually went. That was actually a good thing. We were able to talk and have a great visit in an almost private booth that could have comfortably held six of us. It wasn't until the second person joined me at the table that I realized this was the location of Taipei, a favorite Chinese restaurant of mine that I hadn't been to forever. It is totally different now and is very nice with a comfortable vibe. I really wasn't in the mood for sushi. Since I had never really eaten Japanese food much, I went with a bento box. To me, it seemed like a great sampler. You get several things in it including 2 gyoza, 2 harumaki (spring rolls), smoked squid salad, seaweed salad, cucumber salad, a mini kani salad, and four pieces of crab roll. I chose Dragon Beef for my main dish. It was listed as "spicy stir fried beef and chef choice vegetables. It, and everything else in the box was tasty. They weren't kidding about the spicy part. The service was perfect. They didn't hover and left us to chat for about two hours, coming over every few minutes to offer drink refills, etc. I also have to say that the bento box seemed like a great economical choice. I was completely stuffed when I left for under $20.00. That hasn't been true at very many places lately. I know I will be back to try some other things. Good food and service. Not exactly sure how I feel about leftover policy? They offer 1/2 price sushi rolls Mon-Wed from opening until 6pm. After we finished eating we had some leftover rolls and asked to please box up to take home. We were told "yes this time, but in the future it would be no". Now this was NOT an "all you can eat" experience which I would completely understand if it were the case. I'm also not aware of any verbiage or any disclosure regarding not being able to take your leftovers home if they were part of some special. Our bill for 2 of us was still over $100 regardless of their sushi rolls special, and neither of us ordered any alcohol. That's the reason they're only getting four out of five stars because I do love their food. read more

We came here on recommendation from a friend. They came too! So we had a mix of barbecue and sushi. It was great. The service was wonderful. The service came around refilling Waters and they brought enough tongs for each person. They were also conscientious about the number of plays we had, so they helped us configure and condense dishes in a sensible way. I really appreciated that they serve the meat on ice. This is Texas after all, and even in December, it can be hot. Just ask the ice rink at Travis park. :/ The restaurant is not fancy, but the food is high quality. I've noticed that in a lot of the sushi places around, the fish is bland. That's not the case here. There's care in preparation and the result is a tasty, but fresh sushi at the right temperature. Is it possible to suffer from sushi overload? Actually the opposite is the case for Marjan and me. In truth, sushi was as foreign to me as munching octopus, or rattlesnake tacos, or the death defying fugu fish. That is until I tripped to Japan with our medical society 10 years ago, and was properly introduced to the allure and tantalizing flavors of sushi and sashimi! Marjan has always enjoyed culinary adventure, and we have been exploring sushi bars wherever we may find ourselves, at home or on vacation. And so we find ourselves last night at Sushishima in Castle Hills. Our experience was rewarding. This sushi restaurant is the second location for the operation, the Vinyard location I had frequented some time in the past. This location is now open for about 5 years. It is found on Military Highway, anchoring the corner of a retail center, convenient for access and parking aplenty. We visited without reservation, and were immediately greeted by the congenial hostess and taken to our seats. Surveying the restaurant, there is seating, tables and booths fronting and left of entry, and seating at the sushi counter left of entry. The decor is contemporary, not lavish, but comfortable and well appointed. Billy, our waiter immediately addressed our table, filling our drink order. His very respectful manner and demeanor harkened me back to the service staff I had experienced in Tokyo, Kumamoto and Kyoto. (There is something remarkable about staff that bows to customers as a genuine gesture of respect.) We began our adventure with Harumaki, the establishment's offering of spring roll. The shell was thin, delicate and flaky, and within, vegetables, protein and noodles. We are not fond of heavy, over friend wrappers, so the tender presentation was just perfect. We ordered a bottle of one of our favorite sakes, the Kiro Junmai Gingo Sake. This libation is clear, filtered and served cold. Not too sweet, not too dry, but as the Goldilocks progression may conclude: just perfect. Next up: salmon sashimi. And friends, this for us, is the true test of a sushi restaurant. The offering demands freshness, with the perfect cut of the creature, giving a buttery, creamy, yes, melt in the mouth morsel. This sushimi ticked all the boxes. Next, the Crazy Couple Roll. This offering of spicy protein: crawfish and tuna. Salmon, avocado, tempura flakes and sriracha sauce completed the roll. The sweet, savoury and spicy sauce added a complexity to the roll that was pleasing to our table. (Marjan enjoys spice...hot spice...but dear readers, don't be dismayed, the heat level was not an issue for my tender palate.) Now, the El Toro Roll. Within, shrimp, crab and avocado, topped with salmon, jalapeno, yellow tail, sriracha and ponzu. We devoured this offering. Finally, the Phoenix Roll. Here, spicy tuna, topped with shrimp, tempura flakes, eel sauce and spicy mayo. And again, totally enjoyed by our table. For those unfamiliar with the nuances of sushi, the play of texture, sweet/spicy balance, and sauce selection truly create exceptional delicacies. We think Sushishima ranks as one of our now favorite restaurants for its ability to offer dishes that literally jump calisthenics on our taste buds. Yelpers, give Sushishima in Castle Hills a try.
