Excellent, amazing, spectacular, meets expectations! What more can I say? I learned of Sushiya from a colleague while dining downtown. Soon after that, I convinced a friend that we should get takeout from Sushiya for our night in. I would pick up orders from work to home. My friend kept it simple and ordered tempura and sushi dinner. My drive out to North Liberty felt like an eternity. When I arrived, I walked into a near-packed small restaurant. My order was ready and off I went. The tempura quickly filled my car with its fragrant aroma of freshly fried light crunchiness. The tempura remained relatively crispy considering the time it spent in a styrofoam container. Our nigiri dinner for two was perfect. Salad and miso soup were standard. The star of the meal were the nigiri fish pieces. Fish was fresh and clean tasting. Salmon was as it should be tasty with it natural oils. Hamachi equally buttery naturally. Tilapia, not a usual combo piece was sweet here. I appreciate Sushiya's honesty in serving escolar (not the misnamed white tuna). Shrimp and eel as expected. Another tip to note is the restaurant is usually packed with Asians of all types. I hear the Omakase is done very well by the head sushi chef. I look forward to trying this out. read more

Our fam loves Sushiya! Prior to Sushiya! our go-to was Sushi House in Cedar Rapids. We realized some changes in the food/experience at SH so we're inspired to try somewhere new. We walked in the door (this was 2019) and saw the manager and his wife from Sushi House that we loved had started their own thing and it was the best reunion ever, we were so happy to see them and it explained everything about our disappointment with Sushi House of late. Huge fans of the Kobe Beef roll & Fire Dragon roll. But honesty can't go wrong with anything on the Sushiya! menu. Heavy endorsement from the Whitters clan. read more

Great service from the staff here! They are very friendly and attentive with their service. I like a place where the staff is genuine and passionate about their restaurant. I had the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, both were made perfect and the quality of fish was great. Had a small bowl of miso soup as well, yummy as always. They have a good sized selection in sushi and entrees that include Japanese and Chinese style dishes, prices are very reasonable as well. So you will most likely be able to find a dish for everyone here. I really enjoyed my lunch here, doesn't take too long to get in and out. I love Sushiya! It is about time there was a really legit sushi place in the area! The staff here is fantastic, the prices are excellent and the variety is very appropriate. All too often, we've been to a sushi spot that attempts to be "pan-asian" and serve Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Here, they do primarily Sushi, with a little dabbling into different types of noodles. A few Chinese dishes speckle the menu and are also very good. We've been here 5 or 6 times now and have never been disappointed. The sushi is always excellent and they're often trying new things. If you ask the servers about some of the rolls they're demoing, they may be able to hook you up. For starter, we've fallen in love with the Korokke - It's a Japanese dish that will remind you of a cross between a falafel, curry and a hash brown. The sauce that it comes with (Tonkatsu I think) is incredible and compliments it very well. We've had the Udon noodles a few times and it goes perfect with a couple rolls. The spider rolls is lovely, the salmon skin and spicy salmon are classics and the tempura was delicious. In total, we've tried 10-12 of the rolls and all have been fabulous. The sushi chefs are money and the rolls they're putting together are as good as anything we've had on either coast. My favorite beer here has become the "Laughing Budda". It comes in a delightful green bottle and is a pretty standard lager. There are a couple other Japanese beers available if you fancy. As mentioned, the physical room within the place is relatively limited, but they move folks in and out quick enough that there's generally not a huge wait. Total icing on the cake - every time we come through they make fancy oranges for our little dude Overall, this place is a gem. The service is great and the food is fantastic. I love sushi and will get it almost once a week, but this review isn't really about their sushi. I mean, the sushi's great, not much to complain about. But for me, what keeps me coming back (instead of ordering from another pretty great sushi place much closer to me) is the ground pork rice on the home cuisine menu. It is nothing short of magical -- just one bite and I'm instantly transported back to Taiwan. If you're familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, then you'd know that braised pork rice is a national dish of sorts, and for a lot of us far from home, a good bowl of this stuff can come with a strong sense of nostalgia. But even in a city like New York, it's hard to come across a bowl that hits all the right notes to create that kind of magic. Sushiya nails it everytime: Perfect consistency rice Perfect fat to meat ratio pork belly, cut into tiny thin pieces Strong shallot essence as the base of the braise Perfect amount of seasoning all around Braised to soft, luxurious perfection Perfect praised egg Plus the classic yellow pickled daikon that just screams authenticity Not kidding when I say I almost cried when I first had it. It was that good. Next time you're here for sushi, add a bowl of pork rice to your order and try it out. I promise it's worth it. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers I found Sushiya on my drive from Chicago to Cedar Rapids. It's about 4.5 miles from the highway but well worth the detour. This is a smaller sushi restaurant that also serves udon bowls. They don't have a full bar but do serve beer, wine and sake. I got the sushi sashimi dinner for 1 and for $19.50 this is an incredible value since in addition to miso soup and salad, you also get a basic roll, 4 pieces of sushi and 7 pieces of sashimi...wait there is more...you cap it off with some income cream...a choice of red bean, green tea, mango or ginger. I got red bean and it was delicious. The fish was quite fresh and the cuts of fish was good. The presentation was also neat. I only gave 4 and not 5 stars since I would have liked a little more variety as it was predominantly Tuna and Salmon and there was no Yellow tail or Albacore tuna. read more

Came here based on Yelp and proximity to the University of Iowa while visiting our daughter. We got here in the nick of time, because there was soon a line. My daughters and I got sushi, my wife tempura. We all got yummy soup and salad. I split B1, Sushi Sashimi for 2, $50, with my eldest. It was huge, the slabs of fish thick, and presentation beautiful. The few morsels of tempura my wife shared were also awesome. Five stars for service, presentation and quality. We will be back. read more

I love this place always for sushi. the owners are so nice and will accommodate a party of 7-10 people in the private room (no too private but its in a nook in the restaurant which is nice). The sushi is all curated so well. each sushi order tastes unique and different. really good pairings. Absolutely one of the best sushi restaurants in the State of Iowa! Sushiya is my number 1 go to for sushi as it has one of the freshest fish. I tend to always over order during dinner since I can never decide whether to pick sushi, sashimi or their dinner entrees and always end up ordering one of each and taking home leftovers. Its cheapest to get their combos and pairing them with flavored sakes! Service is always friendly. Though it is a 15 min drive from Iowa City, It is worth going! read more

Staff is excellent and handled our varied requests. Back patio is awesome in nice weather, and I imagine it gets heavy traffic in the fall and spring. My husband and I did our anniversary here and spent less than 50 bucks for a substantial meal. Not bad in my book! As for the food, we tried the egg rolls (standard but yummy), miso soup (same), tuna rolls, and Singapore noodles (at the server's recommendation). My husband loved his noodles even more than the sushi! A few weird things: the tap water tasted off. I'm picky about these things, but even my husband commented on it. We also got ice cream and though they provided generous serving sizes, we weren't huge fans. I absolutely want to come back and try a big spread of sushi items. At work, we like to change up our taco Tuesdays, which means a variety of food options. So, it was recommended that we all get sushi and Sushiya. I was fairly unfamiliar, but their online menu helped me to plan ahead what some options might look like. My girlfriend had quite the challenge, though, for she could not find much on the menu that she would be able to eat without an allergic reaction. She is allergic to fish (though not shellfish like shrimp or lobster), so one might think that there could be many rice dishes possible. However, most sauces and oils used were fish based, so nearly every meal possibility would actually be an issue if attempted. An item she eventually found was listed and did not show any use of fish. Yet, the sauce used to dress the chicken turned out to be fish-based and she had a reaction. The last criticism(s) to mention is the complete lack of space. The venue itself is so incredibly small. We had a party of 8 and any more than that, we would not have had any area to sit. We were placed in a small room, secluded from the rest of the area, as it appeared to be a place to book when planning a larger group. But, it is the ONLY place for a larger group. In addition, our server, while entertaining, was very pushy and incredibly difficult to understand. Food quality-wise, the fire/dragon roll and the spicy salmon crunch rolls that I had were great! The sake drinks were pretty good, though our server gave us two identical bottles rather than the two different types we were wanting to try. read more

Question for the masses: how hard is it to get fresh sashimi in a land-locked state? Answer: very. But, it is sooo good and fresh here at sushiya. The staff is kind and attentive. They do a good job with making sure you're being taken cared for here. And the sushi is top notch. I was on the fence about the four stars; I would have to say 3.5. It's average sized portions and a decent price, but I didn't feel that it was JUST 3 stars. The restaurant itself is pretty relaxed. My friend ordered a bento box and it was the perfect size and price for lunch. I would recommend this place if you like simple sushi done right! We've ordered from both the sushi and entree menu - both have plenty to choose from and everything I've tried has been excellent. The staff has been spectacular every time, even when we bring a large (and rather indecisive / new-to-sushi) group. I've also ordered takeout and that too was excellent - prompt to take my order over the phone and my food was ready for pickup right on time. In warmer months the cozy back patio is a nice place to sit as it overlooks a pond, and if you timed it right, the sunset - truly a beautiful setting to enjoy good conversation and delicious sushi! read more

Many of them several times...(Sunda more than several) Sushiya...nothing compares. that might sound over the top but really....just go.. The service is beyond anything in Iowa. Perhaps the midwest. You are just not used to being attended to with such appreciation to timing and place in a meal. The Chefs... this is the best part...I could spend the better part of an afternoon..and I have.. in simple appreciation of their knife skills and presentation. This is great sushi just north of the Iowa City area. It is fresh fish, well presented and at a great price. And, the service is excellent. Definitely worth the drive north. We started with edamame and Momokawa Pearl Junmai sake. The edamame was salty - as it should be. The sake was milky white and sweet. Perfect combo. The spicy tuna crunch was okay. I prefer when my spicy tuna has spicy mayo on the outside with the crunch on the outside. It was a little weird to have it inside the maki. The Philadelphia was good. The shrimp tempura was excellent. I would not order the spicy crabmeat maki again. All in all a great meal and worth returning any day. read more

When I think of restaurants in North Liberty, two come to mind: Red's Alehouse and Sushiya. Both share the same great focus on delivering excellent food, atmosphere, and service. Sushiya's owners are very friendly and helpful. They love feedback, and seem to love people even more. The food is some of the best quality I've had in the Iowa City area. I've tried the chirashi-don, sushi-sashimi for one, and tuna meal, just to name a few sushi entrees. All of them are fantastic and beautifully plated. Their chefs really know their stuff. The fish is by far the freshest and best-tasting I've had in the 6 years I've lived in the area. If raw fish isn't your game, there are still some wonderful options. There's a special place in my heart for their katsudon, tamagoyaki, and honey roll. Seriously, try the roll. It sounds like an odd combination, but it's the best roll I've ever had for less than $10! If you're hungry for apps, I've never found better shumai than what they make. Their agedashi tofu can't be beat either, and their gyoza are particularly scrumptious. Basically, no matter what you order off of their menu, you're going to come up with a true winner. read more

What an amazing sushi restaurant in central Iowa! It is about (10) minutes north of I-80, and it's worth the trip. It is a smaller, local Japanese restaurant but very still tasty. The ambience was so relaxing. It was very quiet, and they played peaceful classical music. The staff was very friendly and fast. I ordered the sushi box lunch special ($9.50): that included a California roll, (3) pieces of nigiri, tempura, salad, and miso soup. The miso soup was perfect. The rest of the box was excellent! I was worried that the lunch box wouldn't be enough so I ordered another roll, but I was wrong. The sushi box lunch special was the perfect amount. They also have the nice round wooden chop sticks not the cheap square ones. Lastly, there is outside seating at the end of the restaurant past the restrooms. I would defiantly recommend! read more

Taking a road trip to Michigan, the husband and I decided to try something besides fast food. I yelped this place and saw it was some what close near the 80. The location is in a strip mall in West Liberty. We ordered the scallop appetizer to share. This was delicious. Please note that it is fried. I ordered the pork katsu. This fried very crisp and served with some rice. We also ordered the spicy tuna handroll. These were delicious. Right amount of rice and tuna. I wish it could have been a tad bit spicier. Our son ordered the bento box for kids. He had a sushi roll, teriyaki chicken, and fruit. His meal also came with miso soup. Service was good, but there was a delay from our appetizers to our meal. The wait staff apologized for the delay stating they were very busym. The restaurant is very small in size and intimate. read more

I've been here several times now since they opened. It is, by far, the best sushi spot in the area. I recently visited Minneapolis on business, and was brought to a real swanky sushi restaurant, the supposed "best spot in town" as told by the firm, it was very expensive, and had a nice ambiance, but I kept thinking to myself, "I wish I was at Sushiya right now." Long story short, I love it here. The food is on point or better than any other spot I've been to, and considering how reasonably priced it is, the bang for the buck factor is off the charts. Every time I eat here, I leave with the "I just had a great meal with great people" feeling. I try something new every time I come, but I always get the 'smoked salmon nigiri' with my meal, it's so good. read more

We're starting to be regulars here! A friend and I share birthdays so we decided to celebrate here with a few friends. We called ahead to make a reservation knowing how busy this place gets around dinner time. We were supposed to have a table for 6:30. Arrived at 6:25 and we weren't seated until close to 7. It was a very busy night in the restaurant but I was a little disappointed that we called ahead and still had to wait so long for a table. Despite that, we had a great night. Our server (Brittany) was very friendly and accommodating and gave us great suggestions for appetizers. I'm not really a fan of seared ahi but we got the tuna tataki and the ponzu sauce on it was great! For my meal I ordered the chirashi don. Back in Hawaii this is what I get at most sushi restaurants but I've been kind of skeptical about ordering it in Iowa just because I'm not sure about the quality/amount of ingredients for the price you get. After seeing photos of it on Yelp, I wanted to give Sushiya's chirashi a try. It's $18 and more than filling. It included a good variety of seafood (hamachi, ahi, salmon, squid, tako, shrimp, crab sticks, surf clam), tamago yaki, and cucumbers over a bed of sushi rice (if you haven't read my previous review, this place has the best sushi rice in all of IC/CV). The presentation was great and definitely satisfied my raw fish craving. Like always, the food and service were wonderful and we will definitely be back again, but we'll aim for less busy hours! read more
