Went to Italy for 2 weeks - had gelato 16 times while I was there in 6 different cities. I like gelato. THIS WAS MY #1. The only thing I will note here is that the 2 flavors which blew my tastebuds away were a little unusual - Suso and Manet. Both are combinations of pistachio and/or hazelnut, but they were so rich, so amazing, I savored every spoonful. For me, it was outstanding and unrepeated. Literally my favorite gelato place in Italy! (And I went to a LOT of gelato places) I personally like thicker gelato that tastes like ice cream, rather than smoother gelato that tastes like soft serve, and this place delivers! And it's very rich and flavorful, especially their fruit flavors! They also have a huge assortment of flavors, and although it's slightly pricier than other joints, it's definitely worth the price! Oh My Gosh! Leap over bridges, jump the canals, and find this place through the many mazes of Venice. We stopped on a rainy afternoon and enjoyed two scoops .... Best gelato we had in all four cities in Italy that we went to. We walked by at a non-gelato eating time, so we pinned it and made a point to go back because their gelato looked better in the cases than anywhere else. It was pretty popular when we went, but the line moved quickly. My husband adored the Strachiatella (sort of like chocolate chip) and I got a ginger one with cookie bits in it (the name escapes me). This gelato is soooo good. You can tell this gelato is unique and better tasting than the other fake gelato places you'll try in Italy. A small is 1.60 and it just doubles in price after that. Five stars all the way! I ate here 3 times on 3 separate days I was here in Venice. That should tell you how amazing the gelato is at Suso Gelatoteca. From the frutti di bosco (mixed berries) and tortino (double chocolate and raspberry) in a wafer cup to the fragola (strawberry) and moro di venezia (chocolate with coffee cream) in a regular cone rimmed with nuts and chocolate to the passionfruit and dark chocolate in a dark chocolate cone, it all was magical, fresh, and bursting with flavor. This is the best gelato I've ever had and will be the gold standard which all other gelatos and ice creams will measure up to. Rick Steves, a cherished Northwest travel author, recommended this place as the best gelato in Venice and I have to tell you, I agree with the man! I know my limits and I NEVER get gelato in a cone because it's a mess waiting to happen. But the cones at Suso were just too good to resist (I didn't need that shirt anyway...). I got chocolate, mint and salted caramel in a chocolate cone, however, I could have easily ordered anything in the case. They had a great variety of both fruity and sweet flavors and they were all displayed beautifully. It was a little on the expensive side but what in Venice isn't. The chocolate gelato was so rich and packed full of flavor, it was definitely my favorite. I'm also not a huge fan of salted caramel normally, but Suso's won my heart! Many other reviews mentioned the difficulty of finding this place but honestly, Venice is so small you're bound to stumble upon it at some point. Worth a stop! read more

After reading all of the wonderful reviews, we made sure to stop here. The service and location were great, but the Gelato was pretty horrible. My wife liked hers slightly better than I did, but I ended up throwing mine away. Yes I actually threw it away, that's how bad it was. Decent gelato in a touristy area for a fair price. They have fun flavors like pistachio with cherry, rum raisin, and watermelon, all of which were pretty good. But the texture was a but off--like it came from a mix (like a lot of gelato places in tourist-heavy cities). Best gelato so far after four I have had in Italy. Our group had the chocolate top with salted pistachio, hazelnut and fig, vanilla and orange, and white chocolate. All were great. I would highly recommend it. It is off the beaten path, so get good directions first. read more

The portions are smaller than North American standards, but the flavours are so authentic every mouthful is a delight. This is the most delicious gelato place you can possibly dream of! I mean: I'm really good at avoiding sweets, dairy and cold food but every time I visit Venice I just go crazy in this place! I have even been know to eat four multiple-scooped gelatos in one evening (please don't tell anyone and don't judge me! I knew it would be my last ones in a very long time!
