LOVE this shop!! I passed but it a few times since moving to Marin a few months ago, and it caught my eye. The other day when I was lunching at Everest Curry House (amazing Nepalese food!!), I decided this is the day I need to go check out Sustainable Exchange. This store is all the good feels. Many natural materials and fabrics, beautiful artisan style soaps sans heavy perfumes or dyes, scrubby brushes for your dishes, face, and body, and just a plethora of great things for your home, or as gifts. I bought two long handled brushes for body scrubbing, some incense, a mushroom cocoa packet, and a face scrubber. And, the gentleman working (maybe the owner?) was so friendly and personable. I was so heartbroken to hear that Solstice Mercantile in Fairfax, my favorite zero waste store, had closed :( but Sustainable Exchange is a great solution in its stead. I love that they carry Griffin Remedy products. An all-organic SF-founded company that makes beautiful bath products to fill all my glass jars? Awesome. Their formulations are simply the best. Sustainable Exchange also has an excellent selection of zero waste cleaning tools and an array of cute gifts and local artisanal items. Browsing is like a little adventure because there are so many things to see arranged all over the store. Do you need lip balm? Food? Kaftans? Coconut fibre sponges? Flouride-free toothpaste? Dish soap? Chocolate? Bar soap? Honey? Marin themed things? Essential oils? Honestly if you need something random, it's worth checking to see whether Sustainable Exchange carries the zero waste organic version of it! read more

A perfect spot to shop for Christmas gifts, for others or yourself. ;) I also love that they have allowed a Novato high student to set up a community pantry in front of their store. If you try to shop local, sustainable, and are health-conscious this is a great store to shop at. The owner let me know that he makes a lot of the products himself (skincare, bubble bath, etc.) and tries to keep 50% of all inventory local, within about 10 miles if I remember correctly. If you're in need of natural candles, skin care, sustainable scrubbers, or even a Novato t-shirt you can find it here. There's also a stand outside where you can take or leave food so please spread the word if you know anyone in need or want to clean your pantry of packaged goods. read more

One of my favorite stores! I go here regularly for all things sustainable. They make all sorts of soap, balms, etc. I love the metal razor and can always pick up replacement blades. The toothpaste tabs, toothpaste powder, and floss refills for cute, reusable glass floss containers, reusable dish scrubbers, shampoo and conditioner bars. I love the foam soap tablets for my foaming dispensers. All the sustainable hous hope cleaning supplies and cleaners. My husband loved the house made shaving soap so much, he bought one for his dad. Now his dad really loves it and was asking where we bought it! Also lots of great gifts for home decor, trinkets, clothing, toys, etc. read more

This is a wonderful addition to DTSR! I now have a "refillery" list on my phone and go there for face lotion, shampoo and conditioner, dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent and feel so much better not having all those plastic bottles to throw away! I love this place... I love how informative the owner is, I love what this store stands for, and I love that I can support local when I shop here. This place is loaded with local items, I think the owner said most things are sourced within 90 miles. My favorite thing I've bought is the compostable, refillable bamboo dental floss that comes in a neat little glass container. I'm so happy this place has opened downtown! I have been on a quest to de-plasticize my home, and am thrilled to be able to refill basic cleaning and skincare needs like laundry soap and shampoo. They have the coolest handmade shaving soaps that are beautiful and work great yet are way less expensive than what I would typically buy at Sprouts or other natural food stores. What an amazing place, wish I'd found it sooner. I plan to spread the word of this place. They saw I'd posted in need of baby items and they came through. My colleague was so grateful for all the lovely donations. It was so generous I felt compelled to also buy her something from there. They have so many awesome products that are sustainable! I love this shop! They sell beautiful products made from diverted waste. Two of my favorite things are their custom-made shirts made of recycled bottles and their line of unique and gorgeous canvas bags made from used tents and leather reclaimed from dumps in India. They also have some really nice stuff on consignment. read more
