I used Sutherland Tax Services last year and simply dropped off my tax documents. I had no complaints about the tax preparation itself. This year, I wanted to ask a few questions about my taxes before moving forward, so I asked if I could schedule a brief meeting. Dan immediately told me, "No, that's not how I operate." It wasn't just the answer that bothered me--it was the way he said it. He came across as abrupt and rude, making me feel like my questions weren't welcome. As a client, I think it's reasonable to want to understand my tax situation and ask a few questions before having my return prepared. I was essentially told that if I wanted him to do my taxes, I needed to simply drop off my paperwork and that was it. There are many tax professionals who not only do quality work but also take the time to communicate with their clients and answer questions. Because of my experience with Dan's attitude and lack of customer service, I won't be returning, and I can't recommend Sutherland Tax Services. read more

Wow, that is as easy! Getting our taxes done here was les expensive and we had to do less work than our previous tax guy. Finally got my taxes (thank god for the extension for 2022)! I came in on a Monday around 11am & was greeted by Don. I let him know I was looking to file my 2022 taxes & he welcomed me in and asked to take a look at my documents. Soon after, he gave me a quote & said we could complete it right then & there if I wanted to proceed. The process took approximately 30 minutes. He was thorough in explaining to me what I owed & what my refund would be/how I could receive it. I really appreciate how he asked if I had anything that could be used as a write-off otherwise I would've had to pay back a lot more. I live in San Francisco but decided to go with Don and Cindy because my coworker gave such high praises for their efficiency, professionalism and friendliness. I'm pretty much completely lost when it comes to filing taxes since this is my first time doing it myself, so I figured that these were qualities I'd want in someone who would help me with my first tax filing. I'm really at a loss for words when it comes to the following events. I almost never leave negative reviews on Yelp simply because most of the time it's not the company's fault if an employee is upset or having a bad day (and I understand that since I run my own company). But in this case, it was the way things were handled by Don and Cindy. My first call was regarding filing a tax extension. When I was greeted on the phone, Don seemed very rushed. He kept cutting me off and asking for my information. This was right around peak filing so I 100% chalked it up as them being busy and did not even bat an eye. They promptly filed for an extension and asked me to follow up for preparations in a couple weeks since they were off for vacation. Cool! A little off-putting, but who hasn't been stressed and in the flow? This promptness is why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. I called back 3 weeks later and left a voice message. I then got a call 4 days later with no voicemail. I called back and was greeted by Cindy again. This time around she asked very pointed questions and was wondering what my first and last name was. As I was giving her my name, she kept saying "uh-huh uh-huh" cutting me off. Why would you not just say "ok I was able to pull up your name"? Very strange. It's frustrating when someone asks you for details and you're giving them and they seem to not care about you giving them what they asked for. I then proceeded to ask her if I could get something on the books for tax preparations. She asked whether Don had left a message and I replied "no he had not". I didn't see a big deal there, but the way she asked made it seem like he had left a message and I should be referring to whatever he had said there. She then talked to Don in the background and I could hear her groaning loudly. She came back and said that I could either come in and drop off the paper work or they would do it on the spot. I asked if I could scan any documents and send it to them since I was in San Francisco and she said "sure whatever you want". I asked her what documents I would need to send over (I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't just W-2s or anything - I was kinda hoping they would walk me through things) and she *straight up laughed* and said "uhh any documents we'd need for tax filing". That's when I knew they either didn't want anything to do with me or simply didn't understand what good customer service is. This wasn't a friendly "ha-ha" laugh. It was a "are you kidding me?" laugh. I simultaneously felt like an idiot, frustrated, and overall confused. I can honestly say I've never had worse customer service than this. I absolutely hate leaving reviews like this. I think I've overall grown from this experience and will be very diligent about not adopting a condescending attitude (or tone where it may be misconstrued as such). read more
