This place lets you escape from the daily hustle and bustle of our busy lives albeit for a moment - but it's still a good escape. You get instantly transformed to another era of the glory of yesteryears - similar to visiting the ruins of old Rome. Although its ruins are beautifully carved by the hands of Father Time. You can feel like a 10 year old kid exploring this place and letting your imagination run wild. The cave draws you in with the curiosity of a cat. Even if you've been here before, you still find something new to marvel at. Enjoy a hike with your dogs on the trails or head to the beach to cool off. Just be careful climbing those cliffs, a wrong step might land you a trip to the hospital. i SEA you!!!! Tucked away next to Land's End Trails and right on Ocean Beach is Sutra Bath's. A small walk down some stairs and your right next to outdoor pools that were used by the public in the 40's. It's a interesting walk into the past. Pools are surrounded by beautiful pink wild flowers and other beach fauna. Very reminiscent of a place we have back home in Hawaii, the Duke Kahanamoku pools, that were used for the Olympics back in the day, day. read more

I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life and have never actually been here before, well at least until yesterday. Let me tell you, this place is great. You feel like you're in the ruins of a post apocalyptic Bay Area. The aliens have lost, but the remains of our former civilization still exist and need to be rebuilt. It's that type of place, filled with majestic beauty and glamor. There were a decent amount of people, and parking what a hoot and a half, but this is also a tourist trap, so it makes sense. There are many path ways here, and I'm not sure what the one we took was called, but it was great. The actual ruins themselves are a sight to behold. We even saw some dude trying to do a handstand on the highest peak. Everyone was watching, wondering if he would fall. SF is known for its high winds and cold weather, but yesterday was just perfect in almost every way imaginable that the experience was flawless. I was a little underwhelmed here. We went at sunset, and while this was a beautiful decision, the area was so packed it was impossible to enjoy. There are obviously the baths, I also went into the cave and through the beautiful park across the street. The famous Sutro Baths: such an amazing sight to behold. My fellow Yelper and BFF drove me to the Sutro Baths one morning saying it was just something I had to see... and she was right. After hiking down the hill to the ruins we walked on top of the old walls and explored. I felt like such a child on a grand adventure. I'm with her in saying that SF should renovate and reopen these amazing bath houses that once were. It's such a beautiful thing, to stand on top of ruins next to the ocean. The waves were crashing and the wind was in my hair. Such peace. Such bliss. Everyone should make it out here at least once in their lives. Random note, but when we were there someone (or aliens!?) had put out giant frozen cubes of ice and arranged them around the skeletal walls. Just look at my photos!!! I have no idea why they were put there but judging by the rate at which they were melting, I would say earlier that morning. Random but fun. read more

Sutro Baths is located within Lands End. I didn't know exactly what I was looking at, but the concrete ruins used to be open to the public as the world's largest indoor swimming pool establishment. There were six saltwater pools and one freshwater pool at various temperatures that could accommodate 10,000 people at one time. Facilities included a museum, amphitheater, and ice skating rink. It burned down in June 1966. There is a small cave and I enjoyed listening to the crashing waves. After Sutro Baths, enjoy the rest of Lands End. read more

This is one of those places that I think to myself, "if Heaven is real, I want this to be it". I found out about this place via Twitter or all places, I saw some photos and knew the next time I was in the area that I had to go. And thank God I did. Honestly, words really don't describe it. It's really just breathtaking. He cool air hits you as you're standing on one of the rocks looking out into this enormous body of water. It's one of those places, for me at least, where you can put your entire life into perspective in minutes. Note: don't be a dummy like me and wear anything else but sneakers- the rocks can be slippery and there are plenty of hills, this is San Francisco after all. And be careful because I don't want you falling off of a rock or ledge and into the water. I read somewhere in a review that this is a great date place and I couldn't agree more. Bring your camera! I know that's a duh comment anymore but seriously, you'll want to snap some photos. There is a cafe and restroom at the upper portion so you're not totally isolated from society when you're there. Hike as long as you can to enjoy as much of the area as you can get in. This is one of those great tourist places that you don't realize about SF. There is so much more to the city than urban sprawl. Next time I'm in the area, I am coming back for sure. No matter what the Uber cost is. read more

These ruins are where the Sutro Baths used to be. You can walk down the hill to get a better view of them next to the ocean. Be careful of your footing and don't walk out beyond the barriers as you could fall and get injured. There is a cave that you can walk into that extends for about 40-50 yards to an opening on the other end. Inside of the cave you can see ocean waves below the cave. This is a safe excursion and usually several other people are in the cave. I am not sure if they close this at night. During daylight it is safe. Good photo ops here and it's free. read more

The ocean has taken its toll on the Sutro Baths. The ruins are slowing crumbling away, what a shame. First opened in 1896 the complex contained 7 glass enclosed pools, a museum, a concert hall. My mom told me it was wonderful place to spend a day. It still is a great place.You can see the ruins and the cave that the water came through to fill the pools. The ruins is now the home of San Francisco's only sea otter. If you're not willing to make the hike to Sutro's Bath from Land's End, there is a parking lot relatively close to Sutro's. In fact, if you've been to the Cliffhouse you can see the baths from their balcony! I started out from Land's End and hiked my way to S.B. which only took like a half an hour. Be careful 'cause getting down to the baths, the hill gets pretty steep so I suggest wearing shoes with good gripping soles. The walls of the original baths have now become the little walk way for tourists to see a lovely view of the ocean. That or, the fisherman can get to the large rock across the way with the tide is low. Try not to get into the waters though, it's disgusting and wreaks of filth and trash (so sad). Also, there's a cave down younder that doesn't really take you anywhere. However, you can see the tides crashing against the rocks. In all it's beautiful, the history behind this place is rich. I just wish that people would be more mindful of the baths instead of throwing their trash around. read more

This place was hidden 20 years ago, but still free to all. The expanded parking lot and actual paths and steps down to Sutro Baths has turned it onto a premier sight-seeing, picture ops and hiking spot. On a clear day the Golden Gate Bridge will be within frame if you head east/left of parking spaces (must walk the trail 500 ft or go to top parking lot). I recall urban spelunking on low tide but they've now eliminated that feature/danger. Time and waves has broken down most of the bath ruins, but if you can still walk in ruins of the old bathhouse in and see the outline of a once great indoor pool. read more

I can only imagine how awesome it must have been to swim and simply relax in a bath house adjacent to the vast ocean. This place is absolutely abundant in history and one of my favorite things to do whenever I'm here is to compare and contrast the old pictures to what remains of it. It's like a puzzle and each time I visit this place, I make a new discovery - the cave, the remains of a waterfall spewing water down to the pool closest to the ocean, the set of stairs that once led down to the saltwater pool, etc. This is also a nice place to take your significant other. Grab a couple of light snacks and maybe even some libations, hike up the stairs past the cave and have a little picnic while enjoying the sunset and gorgeous view. read more

Sutro Baths was one of the places I enjoyed the most on our recent trip to San Francisco. I've heard about them in passing, started to look into them, read the cool history behind it, saw pictures of the place that intrigued me and made me wanna go and see them. So we did! It's easier to get to Sutro Baths area if you take public transportation than I thought it would be. Just take #38 till the end, get off, you'll see the ocean, walk toward it- less than a minute (it's so close!) and you'll see the Visitor's center ahead. The Visitor's Center is great, you can find more info inside, use their restrooms, warm up at their cafe. There are signs that lead you to the baths. I wouldn't call this a hike, you can take the stairs down, or walk downhill and you'll be there in a minute. If you drive, they have a free parking lot. This place is so beautiful, so picturesque that you have to be a moron to not take decent photos of it. Wherever you turn your camera there are wonderful vistas. The views are so dramatic and so San Francisco! It's like the background of a scene in a movie, a great movie. The cave is nearby, small, but cool, you can hear the waves hitting its walls and see the ocean at the end of it. The ruins of the old baths are cool and full of poetry if you're into historic sights. Also, you get nice views on your left of the Cliff House restaurant. It was sunny, but cold and windy when we visited, but we couldn't care less. We were mesmerized by this place. There are locals strolling around, tourists, but it's the type of place that's not that crowded and everyone coexists in peace and enjoys the majestic views. If you'll visit SF and have some time, definitely check it out. It's nature at its best. Stunning! read more

Sutro Baths is the most beautiful place in San Francisco. There, I said it. Imagine: Bath house ruins, filled to the brim with water reflecting the sky above. Silhouettes of visitors walking along the stone edge between the baths and the ocean... From where you're standing, it looks like they're walking on water. Find a clear day and aim to get here an hour before sunset. There's parking at the Lands End Lookout, but on a nice day it'll most likely be crowded, so you might spend some time circling for parking. If it's packed, you might have better luck up the hill by the residential areas. There's quite an elevation difference between the parking lot and the actual baths, so as you might expect there are a LOT of stairs... which makes for a tiring walk back up. If you decide to go all the way down, don't be afraid to go into the cave (it's not that great on the other side, but it's something to do). Watch out for wet sand inside, if you're wearing sandals. If you're wearing comfy shoes, I highly advise walking along the baths to the south end of the area, under the Cliff House restaurant. At the end of the ruins, you can climb down to the beach and dig your toes into the (admittedly cold) sand and water. If you've already been here at sunset, I'd advise coming in the afternoon and taking the Lands End trail for a great view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge -- for my fellow lazy peers, don't worry: it's more of a walk than a hike. Note: Don't come here if it's a foggy day. You won't see much, and it won't give you any sort of wow factor. I've heard that SF gets foggier in the summer, so you might want to visit during the winter months (when it's not raining, of course). There aren't many sights in the world that can take my breath away. Trust me -- if you haven't been here, it's an absolute MUST-SEE in the city. read more

Wonderfully spectacular and scenic place to visit. The view of the sunset over the pacific is simply awesome. There are so many trails to hike around. The ruins and the remnants of the sutro baths, it's writings on those old concrete, the deserted tunnels, rusted pipes trigger memories of its hay day when it was one of the biggest privately owned indoor swimming complexes in the whole world. There's a big parking lot with lots of clean restrooms. But be watchful that there's frequent break ins. Overall it's definitely worth visiting though this historical site is still not easily accessible to folks with special ability. read more

It is really quite beautiful here and an amazing area to walk through. Even if you're not here to hike, I would recommend just stopping by to check it out. It was kind of sad to see graffiti and lots of trash everywhere, but if you're willing to overlook that, it has quite a beautiful view. There's a small parking lot at Land's End which is right above Sutro Baths. If it's full, there's a bit of street parking along the side of Land's End. Or if you're willing to walk you can park a bit further down by the beach and walk over. If you walk down into the ruins of Sutro Baths, it's a bit rocky and sandy. At the bottom of the stairs and to the right, there's a cave that is pretty neat to check out. Will definitely be back again to explore more of this area! read more

A great day trip destination and a good starting point to hike and discover SF! Apparently San Francisco has ruins. Sutro baths (or what's left of it) used to be a large enclosed bath house that was built in the late 1800s. It sits right on the beach and is tucked in between small cliffs. It's also a great place see Point Lobos or start a hike along the Lands End Trail. The Land's end trail is great because you're surrounded by nature and it follows along the bay and beach areas. The trail also leads to the Legion of Honor, which is a totally amazing museum. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of SF, this is a great place to get a way- Nature. Views. This place is an absolute gem in San Francisco and a perfect place to be on a sunny, clear day. I did some online researching about the Sutro Baths before coming here, and was so excited by the idea that this used to be a large indoor swimming arena less than 50 years ago. Upon arriving, I was definitely not disappointed. Maybe it was my active imagination in play, but I loved seeing the ruins: the old, mossed-over stairs down to the pool, the wrecked walls, the random pipe lines etc. Walking along the paths between the pools really made me wonder how/what it was like back when the pools were functioning. The views out to the ocean are incredibly mesmerizing. If you are braver and make it closer to the edge, be wary of occasional ocean sprays! The water that is now in the pools is quite gross and green, but otherwise, this historic landmark is very scenic. If you climb up the stairs, you there is an even more breathtaking view of the city itself and the Golden Gate Bridge. read more

Ah, the lovely Sutro Baths...another fascinating FREE sightseeing location in SF. The area hosts incredible backdrops for photo opportunities....as long as Karl the Fog isn't present. Heck, if Karl is present, just embrace it-- there's something special about his foggy romance that adds character to SF's outdoor ambiance. I've had luck with parking here, so I would say that it's safe to drive to this location if you have a car. People seem to constantly be coming and going and parking spots become available due to turnover. **Wardrobe tip: Make sure to wear comfy shoes because there are plenty of trails, stairs, and paths to frolic on. IT IS VERY WINDY on the west side of the peninsula. Bring a sweatshirt, windbreaker, or light jacket. Go ahead and skip the cafes around here-- they have average food at best and are very touristy. I recommend dipping into the Sunset or Richmond neighborhoods for a bite. I will never get sick of going to Sutro Baths. It's such a beautiful place by the water. There's also an easy hike you can do here that's family friendly. I would recommended ending your day here so that you can watch the sunset. The sunsets are so beautiful here, especially on a clear day. We always find parking in the parking lot near Cliff house, but you can also park up the hill & walk to the baths. There's also a beautiful small beach with a cave that a lot of people take pictures in. Definitely a popular photo spot. GRAFFITI-ED RUINS SURROUNDED BY SCENERY [Warning: Young adults from Central Florida in for vacation] On its own, the Bath Ruins aren't much (more on that below), however, the area surrounding the ruins are great for walking among the rolling hills, the hidden beach, and all with excellent views that make you feel like you're away from the city. FREE TO WANDER THE STONE Free admission. A visitor center sits at the top of the hill with amenities. Those with walking disabilities won't be able to descend into the ruins area. The largest remaining structure of the Ruins is covered with some pretty cool graffiti, but most of the ruins just look like short, stone walls peeking out of the water. It was pretty fun to walk atop those stone walls. Even if your balance is terrible, it's not difficult to do, but if you fall, it'll be a 6-foot tumble. The entire structure lasted until fairly recent in history (early 1900s)- the visitor center was closed when we visited, so we had to research on our own how the Ruins looks like prior, as well as its history. WALKING THE SURROUNDING TRAILS Next to the Ruins is a very, short trail leading through a cave and into a decent view of the cliffs and large rocks in the rear. Similarly, other trails zig-zag around the Land's End area and lead to more sights. The entire area is very photogenic, and during our visit we saw many budding photographers and models- yes, even the Ruins themselves can provide artsy backgrounds. read more

What's not to love? This place is gorgeous. There will be a lot of people- unless you come at some very odd time. Midday there were at least 100 people scattered around the baths or walking through the caves- one group was very large (maybe 35?) I assume it was an organized tour. Review some pictures of how the baths looked in their heyday before you go- although the bar on the hill above the baths has a nice picture of the baths. The ruins are lovely and rather sad- I wish they were still here. The baths looked amazing! Up above the baths is the Cliff House- wonderful place for a drink (eat somewhere else) and the Camera Obscura is also on the cliffs above the baths- right below Cliff House. We walked here from the Legion of Honor- so parking was not an issue for us, but we noticed all the parking spots were taken. read more

Once the largest indoor swimming establishment in the world, Sutro Baths is now an eerie, scenic ruin with pools of salt water and crumbling walls. I find the history so interesting--definitely read up on it. It is such a lovely place to view and hang out for a bit. I went here with a friend and my sister during our visit to San Francisco last week, and we spent a significant amount of time there taking in the views and taking photos (photos do not do the view justice though). There are narrow paths you can walk around Sutro Baths, but be sure to focus and pay attention to where you're going and watch out for the uneven concrete paths/rocks/holes between the paths. It's a great workout up and down the hills and steps--my legs and glutes sure thanked me. Lands End Labyrinth is also nearby so you can hike to it and take in more beautiful views. read more
