Been a while since I've been here. All the ships that they have here docked there's a few of them that are haunted they said. It's $7 for Adults children under 12 is free.

Hyde Street Beach at Sunset - Looking towards the Golden Gate

We're so spoiled in California. Beaches, beaches. Everywhere. Hyde Street Beach may be one of the more overlooked places in The City because, well, it's easy to look in a lot of other directions. And, as I've mentioned in prior Yelp reviews, those of us who live here every day may be a little reluctant to head down to the San Francisco-based Theme Park that is the Fisherman's Wharf area. I mean, I was talking to a bartender the other day who was explaining to me how he curates his whiskey selection. It's a bit of a culture shock to be next to the tourist who is remarking on the splendor and majesty of the Fisherman's Wharf Applebees. ...sigh. I love it down here, though. Hyde Street Beach is located along the Aquatic Park, which is right in between Ghirardelli Square and The Bay. It also stares down Alcatraz. The beach itself is situated along a marina/swimming area that is a man-made lagoon on the former site of Black Point Cove, and its boxed in a bit by Municipal Pier (incidentally, rated one of the top fishing spots in The City). It's a beautiful setting with gorgeous views and a real feeling of being right on the water. And, this is in the middle of The City. It's a beautiful place to be in the morning. It's a really beautiful place to be at sunset. There's a great quality to sitting by the beach and taking in The Bay. I come from the land of lakes. My natural thought when I hear beach is: Swimming. Granted, after four years in SF, I don't quite think that way now. But, you will see some folks don their wet suits and jump in as this is a great location of fitness-oriented swimmers who can tolerate frigid water. I dipped my toe in the water once, so I can tell you, it's cold. There are two swimming clubs (Dolphin and South End) on the east-side of the beach. You can also come down and leave your things on the seating area and use the beach to access the swimming area. So... Good place to chill. Good place to swim in super-cold water. If you're a tourist, you should get down this way and walk along the beach. (You should not buy a pearl from a street vendor, eat at Applebees, or get startled by a guy pretending to be a bush... but that's another story for another day.) If you live here, I'd suggest making a point to come down after work once and a while and take in the sunset. Listen to the waves crash. Smell the salt air. It's pretty pleasant.

Sunset behind Marin and golden gate bridge!

First beach I visited on the bay. Perhaps the most petite beach in the area. Open all night.

Well, here's one green patch that gratefully escaped Joni's downcast fate. The park consists of five acres of bucolic landscaping, which hugs McCovey Cove right across from Oracle Park. I was already familiar with the walking path since it predates the park and provides an inevitable connection for the San Francisco Bay Trail. You can walk easily to Chase Center and Crane Cove from here. Beyond the trail is the Great Lawn, an acre of greenery that slopes toward the water and creates a natural amphitheater. There are other parts of the park like the Gathering Grove and the Shoreline Sands that function primarily as congregation areas during game days and cultural events. But come any time, especially near sunset, because the key draw from any vantage point is the view of Downtown, the Bay Bridge, and of course, the bay itself. RELATED - Exploring Mission Bay? We've rafted twice more with All-Outdoors since my last review - Goodwin Canyon in October 2022,…read moreand then Middle Fork American River again this past month (both 1-day trips). The last time we rafted Middle Fork American was on a cold, gloomy, drizzling day in October 2019 - so we had to give it another go in warmer weather. This time around was just as memorable. Two of us in the boat ended up falling out in the water at Tunnel Chute, which happened so fast that I barely knew what had happened - thankfully, there was a nice calmer stretch of water right after through the river tunnel, so we were easily able to get back into the raft. (Thank you to our guide, Troy, for hauling me back in, and for being an awesome guide in general!) Plus this was one of the photographer spots, so the action was all captured for us to laugh about later. Later, after our tasty sandwich picnic lunch, we had a few unexpected events happen, starting from the portage down Ruck-a-Chucky Falls. Shout-out to all three guides in our group - Troy, Shea, and AJ - for handling things so calmly and getting us all back where we were supposed to be! We had plenty of calm stretches floating down the river as well. The canyon is beautiful and quite peaceful. We saw a ton of dragonflies flying above our heads, masked ducks chilling on rocks and diving underwater, and wild grapes and blackberries growing alongside the river. We'll be back again for another trip with All-Outdoors! Maybe we'll try a 2-day or 3-day trip next time.
