A few notes: this is the best pizza on the north shore, but you have to earn it. The staff is limited mostly to the kitchen, so you'll have to bus your own table and clean up after yourself. There is no canned music playing in the dining room, and if you want a to-go box, there's a pile of them on a shelf by the restrooms. That said, it's fantastic pizza - and worth going all the way to Grand Marais for. Grab a few bumper stickers on your way out and don't forget to clean that table too. They also sell pizza by the slice between noon and three. The UffDa is their standard garbage combo, but I hear good things about 'the one with white sauce and chicken' as well. read more

Is the pizza good? Yes. But that is the only thing going for this place. I get that Covid hit places hard and this seems to be one of them. The building has been for sale since 2022 and has dropped significantly in price with still no sale. It seems the owners have all but given up. Ordering was fairly straightforward. Not a super friendly approach but not rude either. The menu is posted on the window so the only thing that was kind of a bummer was a lot of customer milling around waiting for orders blocking the actual menu. You're expected to know what you want, even if youve never been, so be prepared when you get to the register. Upon entering you see a sign asking you to bus your own table. Great if people so that but when they don't (and there's no actual cleaning supplies in site to wipe down tables) you find yourself sitting in a room full of sticky tables, overfilled trash bins and and endless amount of flies joining your party for dinner. It made us wonder if the tables are ever cleaned, even after closing. The dining room is somewhat dark and the back also has office partitions where you can see extra storage and uhaul boxes just stacked up. The customer flow was still pretty steady but many took their pies to go. We should have. Eating on the nearby beach (to really anywhere other than the actual restaurant) is the way to go. I guess this spot is a Grand Marais icon. The food was good but overall the spot is past it's prime and seems to be something that the staff has little interest in actually putting effort into keeping it a must do. We got takeout wings and pizza last night which happens to be the middle of winter so not high season. Like many local establishments, there were many postings around staffing shortages so they are limited on hours which is completely understandable. The gentleman working was friendly and we were able to take our buzzer back to our nearby condo while waiting for our order to be done. We made our own pizza as my husband despises onions and most of their menu items contain onions and they're not offering any substitutions or changes at this time. I like the pizza, crust was good, kind of a medium depth and toppings were plentiful. The sauce wasn't my favorite but I'm also not a huge marinara fan but they were not offering the white sauce. I would 100% skip the boneless wings. They were basically chicken nuggets with sauces on the side so we could toss them ourselves. Could have easily purchased a frozen bag at the grocery store and created the same thing. I know this is an institution up here and I'd definitely come back for pizza again but it wouldn't be an absolute 'must visit' in my mind. read more

First time here and I thought it was very delicious!! We had a supreme and a pepperoni, 16" for both and ate it all. The cheese, sauce and crust all worked together perfectly!! We substituted green olives for mushrooms on our supreme. 9/10, I would definitely eat it again!! PSA: Due to the economy and labor issues, they are not open every day. Sven & Ole's is a mainstay pizza staple in the center of Grand Marais. In these COVID days, you order at a window and come back later when the pizza is ready. I got a 16" thin crust without cheese to be vegan ($25). The crust is nice and crackly, with some chew. The sauce isn't bad. I just wish they had vegan cheese and meats (how about from Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis?). If you're looking for the best pizza in town, Sven & Ole's is probably it. read more

We walked in and ordered a deep dish sausage pizza and a smaller margarita pizza for my daughter and garlic bread. We brought our pizzas back to our hotel and while my husband and I started taking bites we realized there was no red sauce on the pizza.Luckily my daughter had a small thing of red sauce with her bread so we used that and dunked it. i called the next day since I literally thought they forgot it and the guy said that is how they are made. I don't know if just some of their pizzas have sauce or what,but I guess when we ordered we just assumed red sauce was a standard ingredient. On the day of my visit, Sven and Ole's was only taking orders from their walk-up window. There were no marks for social distancing. The staff was not asking people to not clump directly in front of the window, or to make separate lines for those who have ordered and those who have not. There is no way to discern who is waiting for their pizza and who still needs to order unless you asked around a bit. Everyone is standing in a huge clump (very few with masks, this is not the establishment's fault of course but it makes it even more important that they enforce social distancing guidelines). This is not made any easier by the fact they were not reachable by phone, nor is there any online ordering. The only option was to order at the window. The wait times were running at an hour when we ordered. Phone and online ordering would help to minimize traffic and cut down on time spent waiting in a crowd (also important when it comes to ensuring customer safety with COVID). Either you need to go home and hope you time your return for when your pizza is ready, or wait outside with the crowd. I did talk to the staff at the window (staff is wearing masks) about social distancing measures and she said something would be put in place but people probably wouldn't follow it anyway. Isn't it worth a try, though? The 6 foot distance marks have worked well at every place I've been that has them. She also said it was their first day without the inside being open, but given how established this place is, I would imagine staff have a good idea of how popular of a place it is and would be able to anticipate needs and plan accordingly. Also, we're three months deep into COVID and safety recommendations are well-established by now. I really hope this was a bad day and this changes soon. I know S&O's is a known and loved business in Northern MN. I just did not have a good experience. About the actual food: we ordered a pizza with just onions on it. There weren't many onions. I messaged the business privately about it on Facebook and got a terse reply saying the onions were under the cheese. They said I had not taken a bite of it to see (I usually take any pictures of my food before I start eating it so I can present it fully when I post a photo, as do most people I know) and said it was "clear as day" there were onions on the pizza after enlarging the photo. I did not taste or feel much more In terms of onions and did lift up the cheese on some slices to see if there was more I was missing but there still wasn't much there. Flavor-wise, the pizza was good, however I would have liked more in terms of toppings. The price was reasonable for a one-topping 12-inch pizza. In sum: social distancing is not currently being enforced at the time of this review. Phones were not being answered (I talked to two other people in line who were also unable to get a hold of the store either, and I overheard one person say they had tried calling 11 times before coming down to order) so you may have to order in person with a long wait. Good pizza, decent pickled herring. We ordered a 16" pizza to go - thick crust, half Uffda Zah, half pepperoni and pineapple. My wife ordered a side of pickled herring. The pizza was good but with the volume of toppings they put on there with the thick crust it almost took two hands to pick up. The pickled herring tasted like fish. In this update, some things at Sven & Ole's have changed since my last visit and others I have learned to deal with to make me a fan. The tiny paper menu and tiny print menu on the wall are both gone replaced by a regular plastic coated readable one that you can look at while you are in line. Yay! There is no table service. Once you come to terms with that, you can chase the staff around the dining room to get what you need. They are glad to help. The pizza is great! The experience leaves much to be desired, especially if you visited it years ago and can remember its charm. What has happened since covid is unfortunate. When I ordered, I was told 30-45 minutes. After an hour wait, I asked, and they said it was in the oven. 15 minutes later, they told another customer they got the orders mixed up. I've been here 90 minutes. No pizza. They keep telling me, "It's in the oven" and "I only work up at the register" ... short staffed or not, manage the kitchen better and don't lie to your customers. They have been very short staffed so limited hours and limited menu. We went 15 minutes before they opened and waited outside and it was still a 45 minute wait for our mini pizza that feeds 1! The nice part is that they give you a buzzer and you can walk around the town and keep yourself busy until it's ready. We decided on the chicken and wild rice pizza. I've never had wild rice in my pizza before and kind of liked it! It gave the pizza a different texture than what you would normally expect. If you're in grand marais, I would highly recommend stopping by and just be patient as they work through their staffing shortages! read more

Ok normally I would have pictures however it was dark when we got our food. I would give this place a 5 for the food alone but we had some issues. I know times are hard and staffing is low but it took over an hour to receive our pizzas. There is currently no inside dinning so waiting in the 59 degree weather for this girl was a little chilly. This restaurant stops taking orders at 7pm so keep that in mind as the evening we went it was super crowded around town. I will say it was worth the wait as one we were hungry but two tons of toppings and the kids approved and both ate all their pizzas. This is a great place to stop for Pizza!! As a kid going up to Grand Marais this was the place me and my mom always went for dinner. It has not changed much in 20+ years and that's a good thing. Awesome small town atmosphere, with a fun local vibe and laid back pace. I love the pizza in any flavor and I cover it with shaky cheese and red pepper. They host the pickled herring eating contest during fisherman's picnic and the pizza eating contest. When ever I drive up to GM in the winter and pass the town all shut down after 8 pm and the lights still on at Sven and Ole's I feel welcome. The staff is a mix of immigrants and locals that is also very true to the area as a place founded by fisher people from all over the world that embrace the frozen north. You will go here for the people and the history and the food is great too. I will be back again and again. read more

We picked up a few pizza's for dinner and they are dealing with COVID as best as they can, especially with their normal summer staff not coming in. Staff there was great! We ordered a The Vild Vun, I would have never thought Canadian bacon and wild rice on a pizza would be so delicious! Even more amazing was the Shicken & Vild Rice Zah, we ordered a small as we didn't know if the garlic chicken was spicy. It was amazing!!! So much flavor. They have a great selection of other pizza's and specialty pizza's. I look forward to having another pizza by the lake when we come back to Grand Marais. read more

Love this no-frills pizza shop. It's nothing fancy, but they serve a fun pie. Where else can you get pizza with wild rice on it? I highly recommend that particular dining adventure. The restaurant itself is a very mom and pop type of deal, the type of place that you can tell the locals have been patronizing for decades. All kinds of random items are mounted on the walls and make for fun looking while you are waiting for your pizza. You order at the counter, get a cup with a number on it, choose your own seat in the dining room and wait for your food. I recommend the thick crust over the thin crust and again -- highly endorse trying the wild rice topping. Unique and tasty and a lot of fun. read more

Just back from another trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. A trip we have made many times over the years. A mandatory stop for us in Grand Marais has always been Sven & Ole's Pizza. Have always liked their pizza and the atmosphere. However, this year Sven & Ole's and many other businesses on the north shore are having BIG problems. They are all suffering severe staffing problems due to the inability to hire young people from other countries as seasonal help. They also stated that there is a serious shortage of housing for seasonal staff in Grand Marais. Last week they were only open for 4 days. ( Thursday , Friday, Saturday and Sunday ) Some days they were only open for 3 hours. The restaurant is currently take out only. You place your order at a window in the front of the store. We arrived at 6pm. Got in line and waited 45 minutes just to place our order! Once we placed our order we were told it would be ready in one hour. We were staying nearby, so most of our party went back to the house we were staying in. At 7:50 pm I was given our order and rushed back to the house. We had ordered 2 pizza. One with Italian sausage and onion and one with hamburger. When we opened the box we discovered that they had not put any cheese on the hamburger pizza!!! ( See attached photo ) We were dumbfounded how anyone would make a pizza and not put any cheeses on it????? Also, both pizzas were somewhat undercooked. Sad to see this north shore institution having so many problems. I hope they will be able to work them out soon and get back to normal. read more

This was my first visit here,Can't believe I've never been here. The line was short when we got there, but it filled up fast! There is limited seating. We ordered garlic bread with marinara, really Good! We also shared a larger pepperoni and sausage pizza, so Good! There's a lot of places to eat in this town and many places that are frequented by tourists. The value in coming here stems from not having to spend a lot of money to feed the family. You aren't going to be blown away by the pizza, but you're not going to have any complaints either. Keep in mind many of the restaurants that bring more quality in this town are almost triple the price. If you're in town with a large group this is a great place to spread out, order a pizza and grab a fountain soda. Beyond that, there is not much else on the menu; other than ice cream. For example, we ordered pizza a few days earlier at the Harbor House and the pizza there was much better. However, if you can't complain about the laid-back atmosphere and the ease of grabbing a bite here. If you're not looking to be impressed or order something local like walleye or whitefish this is a good place for you. Simple, easy, affordable and average. read more

We were super excited to try this place but we're beyond disappointed. They were 20 mins late to open and even came outside to wash the windows and didn't say anything to anyone. Very rude. We then waited for 20 more minutes and didn't move an inch in line. Pizza in the case looked subpar but I can't speak for it since we never actually got any. Also their bathroom was filthy and the sink didn't work. Mildly concerning, really hope the employees are washing their hands and not just using hand sanitizer. Total waste of time read more

Very disappointed. Put in a order over the phone and picked up before we left town. The pizza was stale and looked as if they had it sitting out all day. Definitely not what I remember from years past. I have heard they have frozen pizzas and they cook those instead of making fresh pizza.
