Hungry Hippie Tacos is an interesting fast food establishment, serving tacos that are a like a bit of a fusion between Native American and Mexican-American cuisine. The food they serve is nothing like a traditional street taco, nor anything like those classic Americanized Mexican restaurants. It really is unique and is something that I've never seen before in the past. The restaurant itself is counter service, so ordering is easy and quick. When we arrived for an early Tuesday dinner at 5PM, it was completely empty. My first impression from looking at the menu was that the tacos seem very expensive. I soon found out that each taco is probably equivalent to four street style tacos in mass, so the pricing makes sense. Grateful Pig, Basket ($15.99) - The taco comes wrapped in aluminum foil. I don't think this does the taco shell any favors, because as soon as I opened up the wrapper, the shell started to crumble and split. There's so much liquid from all the wet ingredients inside that it's literally impossible to eat this taco as a taco - after a couple of dangerous bites where stuff was falling out left and right all over the place, I went up to get a paper boat, flipped the taco out, and ended up eating the rest with fork and knife. The taco shell itself is very interesting. I went into the restaurant thinking it would be similar to Native American frybread, but it's totally different. Instead of being completely flour based, this one is like a puffed up, fried masa and wheat flour mixture, made extra crumbly rather than pliable. It's honestly not a good taco shell given how crumbly and dry it is. The pork is nicely smoky, although very salty and needs the blander ingredients above to dilute that salt out - very hard to do in taco format. The basket comes with a bunch of crunchy homemade tortilla chips, not too salty, and a tiny cup of salsa. The salsa is quite watery/runny and is pureed heavily. It's given in such a small amount that's not nearly enough for all the chips on the plate. I'm not convinced this is a freshly homemade salsa. (3/5) Wild Willy ($14.99) - Interestingly, this taco shell was better than the other. Firstly, while still crumbly, it has a bit more strength to hold things together. Secondly, it's speckled with super crunchy nubbins all over the exterior, giving additional and very pleasing crunch. Otherwise, this taco has an entire chorizo link rather than the ground bits I expected to see, as typical in a street taco. The link has a bit of heat and the spice mixture complements the natural porky flavor so well. Usually with cheaper chorizo, the spice mixture dominates, but this one is balanced. They cut the chorizo in half like a boat and then stuff it with some slightly roasted corn salsa. It's then doused with lots of chipotle sour cream for more slight heat and plenty of fatty moisture. Finally a huge pile of shredded cheese and lettuce complete the taco. (3/5) I think the tacos might be better served as an open taco concept like the Indian Taco, or at least served in a paper boat instead of wrapped in foil. Friendly workers, nice atmosphere, but I was a bit disappointed in the food. I ordered a burrito with pork, cheese, sour cream, beans and corn salsa. The burrito was loosely packed and rolled so that it kept coming apart every time I picked it up. They forgot the corn salsa which I didn't realize until I was almost finished. After a few bites I thought they forgot the sour cream so I asked for some at the counter, which they gave to me without question. But then I discovered that the last 1/4 of my burrito was made up entirely by cold cheese and sour cream. My son got a burrito bowl which was ok but the beef seemed old and dry. Just the burrito and burrito bowl without drinks came out to $34.66 which feels like a lot for what we received. We would probably pick somewhere else to eat if we were ever in town again. read more

They are doing great things here. The tacos, huge and totally worth the money. Anyone can do corn/flour tortilla tacos, but Hungry Hippie fries up a soft floury bready tortilla. It's like a muchaco. I love the Idaho Love taco. It's filled with potato, corn, romaine and chimichurri. The tater tots are crispy and the Sriracha ones seem to be dusted with that flavor. Yummy. read more

Fun spot, but not everything hit the mark I came here excited to try something different and ordered the Sriracha Maple Cheese Curds and the Pineapple Express Taco. The cheese curds were the highlight -- that sweet-spicy combo actually worked really well. I'd come back for those. The taco, though, fell flat for me. The flavors sounded promising on paper, but it didn't quite come together -- the pineapple felt more like an afterthought than a featured flavor. Not bad, but not something I'd order again. Stopped in for dinner while camping near town. This place had great reviews so we gave it a go but were a little disappointed. I got the totchos with pork and they were great and I also got a thc beverage. My friends got the tacos and were a little disappointed at the size and didn't think they were super flavorful. They also wanted margaritas so they were hoping they had some here but should've done our research. I think if you aren't expecting a fry bread taco you might be confused and not super satisfied with your taco so just a heads up! For me, my food was good but I thought a little on the spendy side for what I was getting. Service was pretty quick and there is plenty of space to sit inside and even some outside seating. I appreciate the idea behind Hungry Hippie - combining fry bread with tacos feels like a great combo for the North Shore. Unfortunately, we visited on a busy Saturday night and our tacos all arrived missing their salsas and were not especially flavorful. The counter was too busy for us to go up and ask for salsa so we ate them as-is. The tater tots with cheese were the best item we tried, I imagine the tater totchos would be awesome! Since fry bread is a lot heartier than a tortilla, you definitely don't need to order as much food as you might expect. It would be great if there was one more vegetarian option as well. read more

Stopped by Hungry Hippie Tacos on the way to a camping trip up in Grand Marais after receiving some recommendations from friends. They are a fast casual shop serving up a variety of Native American, Mexican, and American Fare. You stand in line to order and pay at the front and then they'll call your name when it's time to pick up your order. It was pretty crowded when we came in, but the line was moving quickly and we were even able to grab some tables. For the food, I decided to go with the Brisket Burrito and chose a handful of toppings to go in there. The brisket was good, but they did not listen to a single word about the toppings I asked for. I got a completely random set of toppings that were fully independent of what I had ordered - including a bunch of jalapeños which I had to pick out because I don't like the flavor. The burrito was good, but it was a bit frustrating not having your order match at all. About half my friends there had the exact same thing happen with their fillings as well. read more

We saw the sign for frybread tacos while driving through Grand Marais, so we had to stop. The frybread isn't overly deep fried like those you see at most pow wows, but we enjoyed the tacos overall. You choose your protein for the taco then pick your toppings. The salsa comes on the side, so you can decide how messy you want it to be. Do not go in expecting authentic Mexican food or even Chipotle. It's neither, nor does it imply it is. For a total of $28.18, the 2 of us had the pork burrito, chicken fry bread taco & Tennessee Hot cheese curds. To me, particularly for the area, this was reasonably priced & the serving size generous. Currently, no mask required if vaccinated. You sanitize your hands on entry, order at the counter, have a seat & wait for them to call your name. As a fry bread lover, I'll agree with some other reviews on the fry bread, that it's a bit dense & tough. It isn't oily though, which can be a common problem. The chicken was fabulous, corn was crunchy and the sour cream is delish... I would have liked more onions, but, that's just personal preference. I thought it was a solid choice... Then I tried my husband's burrito. That was a heavenly combo - smoked pork, paired amazingly well with the rice & beans, which I'd have been happy with alone. Pretty sure he added everything. Last dish was the Tennessee Hot cheese curds - this term is loosely applied & I'm saying that as a compliment. Ay caramba, where to begin? This place is what it says it is- It says clearly on the window "frybread tacos" and it is a hipster twist on a taco joint without the pizzazz. As a San Diego native, a taco aficionado, and someone who lived in Mexico and its tacos for a year, I can't say this place is authentic. I can't willingly say this place is good without it jabbing at my corazón. We went on Cinco de mayo, because why not get tacos when in Grand Marais? My husband was the most excited. The bottles of srirarcha sold on the side before you order should've let us know what was up. If you love authentic Mexican food, this is not your place. If you like an American twist with heavier ingredients and lots of cheese, this is your place to go. They definitely upkeep Covid-safe practices. They have signs, indoor seating and outdoor as well as requiring you to keep your mask on when you walk around. It's just not authentic tacos, which, in their defense, they never try to come off to be. The chicken taco I ate was dry and they don't list what they have in their ingredients before you order on the menu (except the specials) because I would've definitely asked them not to load the cheese as they did or substitute for tortillas. Frybread taco is just not our thing- we like our tacos as they should be- with tortilla. The shrimp special was well cooked and my husband liked his beef. He was sorely disappointed by the frybread, too heavy for us and the lack of salsa (tapatío packets and picante packets are not salsa!).We would like the frybread separately as a snack or dessert (it's hefty on it's own). This place has a lot of personality, and it's nice to see some variety in the dining options around here. But our experience was just so-so. The food is kind of bland, especially the frybread tacos. The bread is thick and dense and overwhelms the other ingredients. Tortilla tacos, quesadilla, guacamole, and pico were just okay. Overall quality of ingredients and preparation seemed good, but the flavors were AWOL. Also, the night that we were there, the fountain machine was out of two options (including the only diet soda), AND the ice chute was jammed with a big chunk of ice. So we paid for two fountain drinks and ended up with plain tap water. The ordering line was really long, so I didn't feel like budging in front of other diners to ask for a refund.
