They are doing great things here. The tacos, huge and totally worth the money. Anyone can do corn/flour tortilla tacos, but Hungry Hippie fries up a soft floury bready tortilla. It's like a muchaco. I love the Idaho Love taco. It's filled with potato, corn, romaine and chimichurri. The tater tots are crispy and the Sriracha ones seem to be dusted with that flavor. Yummy.

I ordered the pork pineapple corn tacos and they were very bland. There was also a small bone piece in my meal. Counter service was fast though.

Fun spot, but not everything hit the mark I came here excited to try something different and ordered the Sriracha Maple Cheese Curds and the Pineapple Express Taco. The cheese curds were the highlight -- that sweet-spicy combo actually worked really well. I'd come back for those. The taco, though, fell flat for me. The flavors sounded promising on paper, but it didn't quite come together -- the pineapple felt more like an afterthought than a featured flavor. Not bad, but not something I'd order again. Cool vibe and friendly staff, just a bit hit-or-miss on the food this time around.

Stopped in for dinner while camping near town. This place had great reviews so we gave it a go but were a little disappointed. I got the totchos with pork and they were great and I also got a thc beverage. My friends got the tacos and were a little disappointed at the size and didn't think they were super flavorful. They also wanted margaritas so they were hoping they had some here but should've done our research. I think if you aren't expecting a fry bread taco you might be confused and not super satisfied with your taco so just a heads up! For me, my food was good but I thought a little on the spendy side for what I was getting. Service was pretty quick and there is plenty of space to sit inside and even some outside seating. It's also easy to take to go.

Frybread tacos are special. They remind me of a Chalupa. Crisp and delicious. They load it up with meat. These tacos were huge and very flavorful. I had the chicken. It was very flavorful. They have an assortment of drinks, I had green tea. Service was friendly and quick. We ate side, lots of tables. Eat these tacos when in Grand Marais & Duluth!

I appreciate the idea behind Hungry Hippie - combining fry bread with tacos feels like a great combo for the North Shore. Unfortunately, we visited on a busy Saturday night and our tacos all arrived missing their salsas and were not especially flavorful. The counter was too busy for us to go up and ask for salsa so we ate them as-is. The tater tots with cheese were the best item we tried, I imagine the tater totchos would be awesome! Since fry bread is a lot heartier than a tortilla, you definitely don't need to order as much food as you might expect. It would be great if there was one more vegetarian option as well.

Was a cool. Was a very interesting take on taco. The menu was interesting I wanted to try a few but picked just one. I will say was was wondering what I was gonna be like for the price you Pay to my surprise it was a very big taco. The deep fried shell was fill with a lot of filling. The flavor profile is really good was not let down definitely I would say Americanized tacos. With a good flavor profile. The staff was super friendly and helpful in my decision making the girl recommended one and it was good the cowboy

I had the space rancher and it was amazing! It had a perfect portion of food and tasted delicious. The service was also great, the staff were kind and friendly. What makes this place special was the decorations of all the different state license plates, the nice vibrant interior, and the temperature inside was perfect. 10/10 will strongly recommend this over del taco.

A must for lunch in Grand Marais! Filling, unique, delicious, fast, and friendly. They're best known for their frybread tacos, which most of our group enjoyed. They are massive and even just one can fill you up! I opted for their corn tortillas for a gluten-free option. For either corn or frybread: Build your own, or get one of their featured options. They also have apps like spicy curds, nachos, rice and beans, queso, etc. If you're not feeling tacos, get a chimichanga, burrito, taco salad, or quesadilla. They offer sodas and beer. Order at the front and self-seat - there are usually tables available! It's a casual ambiance with quick food.

Stopped by Hungry Hippie Tacos on the way to a camping trip up in Grand Marais after receiving some recommendations from friends. They are a fast casual shop serving up a variety of Native American, Mexican, and American Fare. You stand in line to order and pay at the front and then they'll call your name when it's time to pick up your order. It was pretty crowded when we came in, but the line was moving quickly and we were even able to grab some tables. For the food, I decided to go with the Brisket Burrito and chose a handful of toppings to go in there. The brisket was good, but they did not listen to a single word about the toppings I asked for. I got a completely random set of toppings that were fully independent of what I had ordered - including a bunch of jalapeños which I had to pick out because I don't like the flavor. The burrito was good, but it was a bit frustrating not having your order match at all. About half my friends there had the exact same thing happen with their fillings as well.

Easy lunch spot with a variety of tacos with every meat or veggie option. I had the "special" tacos and they ran $13 each so I'd say the tacos are a good size for the price, but it's still an expensive taco. Nice eclectic furniture inside and out recommend if looking for casual eats in the area.

This is not an overly large restaurant, so if you want to really get a great seat inside or out, going during non-peak hours! There is a wrap around pouch and this is dining right on the water! Everything was clean and they use pottery dishes that were made specially for them! Super cute! Service: Friendly and quick! This is a very LGBTQ+ friendly spot! Food: We started with an IPA that my boyfriend said was great! I got their house made maple cream soda. It was very light in flavor, so I wouldn't get that again. We started with the Trout chowder and holy yum!!! The flavor was so tasty! It had large pieces of fish and veggies! Definitely worth trying! We both got the fish and chips with coleslaw. It was super tasty! The fish was fresh and had a crunchy exterior! Their tartar sauce has a yummy dill flavor! I would buy a bottle if you could! To end we had the Kladdkaka! THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED! It was rich and decadent! I really wish they served it with real whipped cream because it deserves it! If you are anywhere near this area, stop in!!

For our first meal on the North Shore and during our stay in Grand Marais, we decided to visit…read moreAngry Trout Cafe. It seemed like a completely chef driven restaurant with items on the menu displaying some creativity and with many of their ingredients locally sourced. We settled in on a Monday evening, right after a thunderstorm had passed the region. Since the outdoor dining area was closed, the wait was probably longer than normal. For our party of 2, we were quoted 35 minutes. Our wait ended up being 1 hour. Right when we were called up, a family of 4 was quoted a 1 hour wait, and this was 30 minutes before they closed! There's no way the staff aren't pissed off at having to stay hours after close due to management inefficiency. At some point, restaurants need to turn away guests. This is the first restaurant I've ever visited where 20% of the displayed menu price goes towards tips and isn't retained by the house. This is the reason the prices seem so high - no additional tips are expected. Herring Fritters (Complementary, normally $17.50) - We ordered the wild rice fritters but were brought these instead. I was confused about the texture and taste. The server confirmed our order had been incorrect. To their credit, they comped this dish, then brought out the correct fritters. These fried fish balls are interesting, almost similar in texture to a Chinese fishball, but less homogeneous and bouncy. Inside is a dense batter mix of thyme, peppers, onions, and small chunks of really tender fish. (4/5) Fried Wild Rice Fritters ($17.50) - These are totally different from the fish fritters. They are lighter inside, more like fried yeast dough donuts, chewier and studded with peas, shiitake mushroom, and some snappy broken wild rice. (5/5) Lake Trout Chowder, Bowl ($14.50) - This is a thinner chowder that isn't particularly creamy or rich. The flavor is nice, with plenty of herbal and umami elements. There are lots of potato, carrot and celery chunks, not to mention a huge number of fish chunks all around. It's all very fresh, so there are no sign of fishy off flavors that I've experienced with other fish chowders. The bowl is served with two pieces of baguette, sliced on a large bias. They have clearly been sitting around in a high humidity environment given how leathery they are. (4/5) Grilled Whitefish Dinner ($39) - Angry Trout prepares their fish perfectly - it's one of the best fillets I've ever eaten. And yet it's so simple - a couple of minutes spent grilling, giving a magnificent charred flavor, yet leaving the fish flawlessly tender and flaky. There's a depth of flavor here beyond just the typical salt, pepper, and butter. It's like they liberally apply an herbal glaze on top that saturates the fish. It comes with some simply grilled asparagus, a side salad, and then a scoopful of wild rice. I believe the rice is high quality, probably hand picked and parched. It isn't as curly as some of the cultivated varieties I've eaten, but still gives the pleasing bouncy and springy snap. The flavor is clean and I especially love the hazelnuts on top for an extra nutty crunch. (5/5) This fish at Angry Trout Cafe was easily one of the best meals I had on my entire trip. With that being said, there's something seriously wrong with this restaurant in service, management, and ethics. I already mentioned the issues with wait times above. In terms of service, every single table around me got at least one thing wrong. One table asked for hot water, the server brought over cold water. Another table asked for bowls of chowder for every person at the table, the server inexplicably brought over lentil soup for one person. The server then forgot the bread for the chowder for another table. The last table complained about the chowder not having anything in it - it was all broth! Once I received the check I was flabbergasted by the credit card fee tacked onto the bill. This is not noted anywhere on the menu or inside the restaurant. This seems to be against Minnesota law, in particular statute 325G.051. To add insult to injury, I was able to pay in cash to avoid the surprise fee, but then I got stiffed a nickel on the change. It's only a nickel, but it's really the culmination of all these things that really makes my blood boil. Due to the initial wait and the error prone and extremely slow service, we were here for a total of 2.5 hours. When we finally left, it was an hour after they closed. Angry Trout Cafe seems like it's run by a chef who knows how to prepare a great dish, and is a great cook/trainer of cooks, but is a complete disaster on the management and business side. I have no idea how a business can be operated like this. I'm honestly surprised this place has been open for two decades. It would have gone out of business quickly in my market.
