Great coffee - better baked goods! My caramel roll was absolutely doused in caramel. Wouldn't have it any other way! Microwave in the space let me reheat it to the perfect temp twice (ha - I'm a slow eater). Cool that you can see the lake through the trees. Solid food, service was not great. We ordered online, I'm gf and it wasn't super clearly labeled from their online ordering system what options were available, but they did have a gf bread option listed for food, and I was able to ask questions via phone before placing my order online. When I went to pickup, it was very confusing where I was supposed to go, and they seemed irritated with me that I didn't know where to go, despite there not being a sign (and one small note in the email of where to pickup). It did seem quite busy that day, but the communication was just not great even for a busy day, and they were pretty dismissive of me after they handed me my food. When we got our food, there was also shredded cheese on my salad - I'm dairy intolerant and the cheese was not listed online as one of the things in the salad, so I didn't even think to note 'no cheese'. If you're planning to order, I would really recommend going in person to do so instead of online, or possibly calling, but I'm not sure if they'd take your order via phone. ESPECIALLY if you have food allergies or intolerances, given how poorly labeled it was online and the fact that they did not include everything in the salad in the listings. I've heard fantastic things about their bakery options, and I'd be curious to sit down here sometime to see if the service is maybe better when sitting vs doing takeout. read more

The bakery items we chose (raspberry danish and cinnamon twist) were very good. Disappointed to see when we came in that they didn't have a great selection of bakery items. We've heard a lot of good things about their caramel roll, which was completely out at 8am. The barista was nice. The inside of the cafe was super cute. We spent a wonderful, but quick long weekend up in Tofte, and we had to check this place out on our way out of town, thanks to the recommendation have a good friend. They were so busy when we walked in the door, with a line of at least 20 people! The energy was bustling, and the employees were moving fast. It seemed like it had already been quite a busy morning, because several of the pastry options were out of stock. But we were more than satisfied to end up with a giant pecan caramel roll, a chocolate twist, a cheese danish, and some coffees. The manager noticed that the chocolate twist was broken, so he told the employee at the register to give it to us for free. We did not expect that, but it was an incredibly kind gesture! Everything was delicious, and the people staying to enjoy their food inside all seemed relaxed and happy. Highly recommend! read more

Call of the Wild pizza sounds way better than it is! I keep ordering it every visit thinking it will improve, but it continues to be limp, doughy and tasteless. This review is for breakfast. When you enter, you take a menu from the rack to decide on your meal and order at the counter. Beverages are self-serve but they deliver the food to your table. Service was quick and pleasant, food came quickly, atmosphere was also pleasant. The problem was the food. I had an omelet with mushrooms, onions, peppers, spinach and cheese served with hash browns and fruit. My husband had the wild rice sausage gravy served on biscuits with 2 eggs. Not sure how you can make an omelet with all of those ingredients so bland, but they managed to do it! I never cook with salt, even on eggs, so it wasn't that my taste buds are used to overly salty foods. The hash browns were soggy and cooked in oil that had a flavor that did not complement breakfast. My husband's biscuits were rubbery. About half of the fruit was good, the rest was not ripe. All in all the only disappointing experience we had on our whole visit to the North Shore. read more

Aimee and I stopped in for lunch after climbing Eagle Mountain, the highest point in MN. Aimee had the Reuben - it was delicious, came with pickles and chips. I had the grillen chicken sandwich spicy, with carmelized onions; also good. Great view of Lake Superior from the dining room, and the cafe' had a nice feel. We were there off-season, so it was quiet, as was the town. Such a pretty ride up, and Eagle Mountain was worth the climb. Drove by the iron ore processing plant, which brought up Gordon Lightfoots' "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald'. Given that it was late November and a storm was approaching, it was very apt. All in all, a good lunch; there are other options there we'd like to try before we go back. read more

Sweet little cafe in Tofte near Lutsen! One of the few cafe options in the area, so it's typically pretty busy for breakfast into lunch and you may catch a line and a wait. They offer some nice breakfast and lunch options in a casual setting. We waited about 15 minutes in line to order, but once in, our food was out to us in 10 minutes. Our table got the breakfast sandwich, Turkey club, and clam chowder - some of the bread was fresh baked which was lovely! The chips were too stale to enjoy. The gluten free cookie for dessert was delicious! There are a handful of indoor tables, and then some on the outdoor patio as well during the warmer months! Again, anticipate a wait for a table during the busy hours. One of your few options for cafe breakfast/lunch and a coffee nearby, and they do a pretty good job! read more

Quaint little cafe in Lutsen, MN with a lot of character. We walked in at around 8:45am on a weekday and there was a line of about 7-8 people ahead of us. A testament to how popular the place was. The restaurant has places to sit and eat but the format is to order at the counter and take your table number for the servers to bring your food. It took some time to get through the line but once it was moving, it was smooth sailing. I ordered the poached egg potato skillet and my husband got the dos estilos omelette. Both were so delicious! We also split a cinnamon roll (not as sweet as traditional cinnamon rolls but still good) and we got coffees as well. The coffees weren't as sweet either but nothing a little sugar can't fix! Absolutely loved the food. It was better than expected and very comparable to food in the Twin Cities. The server who offered my daughter a high chair was very accommodating and kind. I'll definitely stop in again when I am in Lutsen ! Only docked a star for the slow moving line in the morning. However, the food came out quickly (within 10 mins after we ordered) so overall it was a great experience! read more

We swung by this morning right after opening. We were promptly greeted and ordered at the front counter. It took about 15 minutes to get our food, but we enjoyed the patio. I opted for French Toast. Three large pieces of sour dough bread, a bit of fruit compote, and two perfectly cooked crispy slices of bacon were delivered. It was excellent. Husband had a cinnamon roll which he said was very good. The place was busy on a weekday mid morning. There are tables on the patio but it was a bit chilly for outdoor eating. Service was excellent I'm not the biggest fan of standing in line to order, but their process of ordering and getting a table number for delivery worked well. So the food was good, my daughter was not a fan of the compote on the French toast. I was served an everything gluten bagel sandwich, the cashier assured me it was gluten free. Delicious food in a cute location. I had the chicken sandwich, which was excellent. My wife enjoyed the half turkey sandwich with soup, and the kids loved their quesadillas. The macaroni was tasty, though a little rich for a kids' mac and cheese. My wife also had a chai latte that was fantastic. The food came out quickly, and the service was friendly. We enjoy the Coho Cafe when we visit the North Shore, and food is very reasonably priced for the area. When we stopped for dinner tonight, it was very busy and they seem to be short-staffed - looked like only three staff front of house for counter orders, serving, bussing, etc. so it took quite a while to have our order taken and to get the food. One recommendation for management is to make the ordering/line situation more clear. We've usually ordered at the counter and been sent with a number to find a table, but this time we waited in line, and when we got up to the counter and said we were eating there, they said they had a table outside for us, and sent us with menus outside. It was at least another ten minutes before someone took our order. We were confused why they wouldn't have just taken our order at the counter, or if the line was just for to-go orders...? But there was no other way to get a table. Maybe they were just short-staffed, but it was definitely confusing. It took about 40 minutes to get most of our food, but they forgot some of our food, and it was another 10 mins before we could flag our server down and ask. She had not noticed that she was missing an entire meal, but the food was hot when it arrived, so that was good. Everyone enjoyed their meal! If you don't have hungry kids with you, it's a solid spot most of the time! I think we just caught them on a rough night tonight. read more

I really love Coho. It's definitely one of my favorite places to stop and eat at while on the north shore. Today I got half a sandwich and soup. The tomato soup was really good, as well as the sandwich. The coffee wasn't that good but it did the trick. I got a cafe au lait, and wouldn't get it again but I think their other coffees would probably be better. The inside is super cute and feels like a cozy old cabin. Their desserts also look reallyyyy good, but I didn't get any this time. Overall I really enjoy stopping by this place and would recommend it for lunch. read more
