Yes this is a gas station. But it's good Indian food for being a gas station. And even good. If it was a sit down restaurant, which it kind of is. Service was good, water was refilled always. The naan was continually being made fresh and brought out. The food area was clean. It is a gas station, so the decor and ambiance are less than glamorous. 5 star for the food. We're happy to see a dhaba on the highway and that too with authentic food. Properitor is a great guy. Entertains guests well and more than everything serves great food. This was a pit stop for us on the way and back from Florida and we ordered a la carte the first time and enjoyed the sumptuous buffet the next time around. I've only been here a couple times, but every time I have been amazed and impressed. How did Hammond get a place like this? Finding more-or-less authentic Hispanic food isn't so surprising these days, but Indian food? That's a whole different story. Punjabi Dhaba is a full service restaurant and buffet operating out of a gas station. I tried the buffet pre-pandemic and thought it was a great idea: a way to try lots of new foods at once. They stopped offering the buffet for a couple months during the pandemic, but have made it available again. When I was there around 11:30am on a Saturday picking up a to-go order, they had no dine-in customers. I don't know how feasible a buffet is in current times, but I hope they're getting enough revenue through takeout orders and other means that they'll still be around when the pandemic is over. Speaking of the pandemic, they definitely deserve a shout out for their pandemic work. On multiple occasions during the pandemic, Punjabi Dhaba offered free meals to the community. Anyway, getting back to the food. This time I got naan, chicken biryani, and gajar halwa. They have several naan options available but I opted for the plain naan, which was still quite good. The biryani didn't have a whole lot of chicken, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be. Don't get this biryani thinking that since it's a rice dish it won't be spicy, because you'll be wrong! I quite enjoyed the heat though. And I've had literal dreams about the gajar halwa (carrot "pudding"). I've come close to replicating it but I've never gotten it just right, plus it's too much work for a lazy cook like me, so I'll just stick to ordering it here. read more

You need to eat here. That's an order. A few years ago I stopped here for gas. I saw the signs advertising the Indian restaurant and couldn't imagine eating Indian food at a gas station in Hammond. But now that I have, I can't imagine not eating Indian food at a gas station in Hammond. Outside it's a regular gas station with a reasonable amount of pumps dispensing Shell gasoline. Prices aren't outrageous and my pump had the clicker device that lets you fuel up without holding the pump. I am far to important to hold pump handles. Inside there is a wall of beverages like most gas stations. But there is also a full service Indian restaurant, and from 11-3 on weekdays, a buffet. The buffet is $11.99 and that is what I tried today. It was pretty damn delicious. There were about 10 different items on the buffet. I tried about five or six. All were very good, but I will focus on the items you really need to try. Tandoori chicken - holy hell man. Where has this chicken been all my life? While not necessarily bbq chicken, these thighs were cooked in a tandoori and coated in some deliciousness that made them appear slightly red like bbq chicken. But the taste was so different and rich that after tasting it I shook my head in disbelief. Yeah. It's that good. Chicken Tiki Masala - This is a pretty standard Indian dish, but this version was far from standard. It was thick, rich, and the chicken was so tender. If you only try one dish, try this one. Goat Curry - it's goat and it's curry. This is the dish you should try even if you don't want to. It's not as weird as it sounds. The goat is less tender than the chicken but the curry is thick and rich just like the tiki masala. You'll be spooning it up. Now that you've read this far, what are you waiting on? Yep, this is an Indian restaurant in a gas station in Hammond, Louisiana. And if I'm being honest, it isn't that great of a gas station; the price was higher than the neighboring stations and the machine at the pump was a little dodgy and worn. But damn if that wasn't the best Indian food I've had in Louisiana. It's may be the only vegetarian-friendly restaurant in the greater Hammond-Ponchatoula area, but vegetarian does not mean it won't be satisfying. To the locals who don't know anything about Indian food, trust me, they're really good at frying stuff. Take my appetizer, which turned out to be a small entree, with two fried puffed up breads and a chickpea curry I asked for spicy which had visible flecks of fresh green chilis throughout. Fantastic. And I ordered okra, a plant many people associate with the Southern U.S. but which is popular at comparable latitudes in India. It was a very tasty-if oily-stir fry with onions and tomatoes, and the accompanying rice had a few cumin seeds mixed in. I also got a free papadum as an appetizer (a lentil-based cracker). I could not finish it all. The ambiance is about what you'd expect out of a gas station, with the addition of some Punjabi hip hop being streamed on a TV, but for what I spent, the food was totally worth it. Notably, they have a lunch buffet from 11-3 that probably makes more sense for anyone who really is just stopping to get gas. First off, WOW! I tried this place recently and I am still dreaming about it. I've been living in louisiana 5 years now and this is HANDS DOWN the BEST Indian food I've had. (And trust me when I say I've tried every Indian restaurant in La! From Houma to New Orleans to Hammond just searching for something that comes remotely close to authentic/flavorful Indian cuisine). This food wasn't overpowered by cumin like most places I've tried seem to be. This chef knows what their doing! They have the ratio of flavors perfected. It literally tastes like the chef is getting the food straight from India. The meat is cooked so tender it literally melts in your mouth. The curry and seasonings are done to PERFECTION, like a science. I literally had to stop myself from drinking the curry at the end. Gordon Ramsay needs to come here and put these guys on the map! It's that good! Even the Naan was so fluffy and tasty. Not to mention the ownership - such a welcoming and incredible staff! Such good hearted and humble guys!This place didn't stop filling with customers the entire time I was there. Do yourself a favor and try it out! You won't regret it! I'm so excited that I finally have a place here to get some authentic Indian food! My mother came to visit and even she approved, that's saying a lot bc her standards are next level lol. Worst app to order food on, they don't deliver what is show on the app. You order what you see on the app believing it is available and then they tell you they haven't made that today, AFTER they deliver the other items that are. I ordered 2 things today with bread and tell me why they only delivered the bread!? Like why would I order just two pieces of bread for 7$? This is the place to go if you want a flavor filled authentic Punjabi food! With the buffet variety that is available between 11am-2pm when we went, there were three to four chefs making the food where the naan was very soft and so tasty, the butter chicken out of this world, the gulab jamun so sweet and the carrot halwa really sumptuous! The peas pulao was basmati and so very nicely done without any reheat that would made the rice grains hard! And to top it all the great ambience!!!!
