I like to try classes with different instructors. Each has their own followers and a different vibe. I started with just one class a week and now I find myself in four or five classes a week. The saying "You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions and have a completely new body in 30 sessions" is completely true. Random people and even loved ones have noticed the changes. While not easy, a Pilates practice is achievable by everyone -- I have seen all ages and all sizes -- and the resulting transformation-- to mind, body and even spirit -- is something I have strived to achieve for decades I am taking off one-quarter star because the reformers are a bit closer together than the other studio I also frequent.

The forms they ask you to fill out online are so glitchy and horrible; I filled out the same form three times because it kept refreshing. I get to the the studio for my "complimentary class"; I first walk in and the studio reeks of sweat. (Note that I have been attending studio fitness classes for years; I have never walked into a studio and thought it reeked of gnarly sweat before. Ever.) I get there, I buy grippy socks for class, and at this point I'm overlooking the smell and pumped to to give the class a chance. I then find out from the gal at the front desk that what I'm about to go into isn't a full 50 min class, but it's a 30 minute introduction to pilates where the instructor will be explaining how to use the machine. Note that manager Ali texted me and followed up with me after I originally responded to the ad, and used the term "complimentary class." So this is NOT a "complimentary class" for first timers... they sucker you into the studio by lying to you and calling it a "complimentary class" but you get 30 minutes of someone telling you how to use the machines. I asked if it was a true workout, would I sweat etc.. the front desk gal said "maybe". I took off my grippy socks and left. I went home and worked out in my home gym for an actual workout. I also need to note that I got to the studio 15 min early before the fake class was supposed to start. I was watching a class inside that was ongoing. The instructor was sitting while telling everyone what to do, and on her phone during the class. That's the epitome of uninspiring. In conclusion: This place smells horrible, has shoddy business organization, and they lie to people to get them into the studio. I look forward to seeing what business takes their place soon!

I've been in a little bit of a workout rut with the same classes for awhile now so I've been trying…read moreto switch it up lately. I also am trying to get out of the mindset that a workout has to = cardio and so I found myself at my neighborhood Pilates Studio, The Pilates House. I've taken 3 classes and 2 privates with 5 different instructors (shout out to Amanda, Lila, Karen, Haley and Kate). While all my friends who go here seem to have their favorite instructors (and all different favorites), I've really enjoyed all of their classes. I plan to sign up for more of their classes and try other instructors as well. I've left all their classes feeling like a got a great core workout (among other parts of my bodies) and wondering what took me so long to jump on the pilates train. it's a small studio so there's typically one class of 4 people at the same time as a private at the other side of the studio. Only 4 people in a class at a time means that it can be quite difficult to get into a class, especially as the most popular workout times (8:30 or 9:30am). I've been trying my best to book a class weeks ahead of time, but it still isn't easy to get in. I have had luck with putting myself on the waitlist for classes so highly recommend giving it a shot. And I was told if there's a class that works best for your schedule AND it has an opening you can get a regular spot, but it's hard for me to commit to a certain time and day of week with work and kids. I haven't seen a class later than 12:30pm on the schedule so would be great to see some late afternoon and early evening classes added to the schedule at some point. I'm eager to commit to Pilates at least once a week with the hope that I can get a spot in class each week!

Update: There's…read morestill a lot to like here, but the studio has kind of been eroding since I last reviewed it two years ago. First the good news: they seem to have repaired what was a deeply unreliable and often broken furnace/humidifier -- I was frustrated by going to "The Hot Room" only to find it "The Warm Room" or even "The Cool Room." That said, the disappointing: the old sense of community at this studio is largely gone -- often feels more like a mid-range gym where you show up, do your workout, and leave. Little amenities that used to be there are now gone without explanation. Inflation? Seems as though there are fewer classes than there once were, but that may be perception rather than reality. I especially miss the "open studio" times that enabled one to come in and "practice one's practice" on one's own schedule. Maybe that was just a covid thing? Regardless, it's something that was once included that is no longer there. There has been a surprising amount of turnover in management, staff, and instructors. Fortunately, the best Inferno Pilates instructor has hung around through this, and the new yoga team is very solid. For the most part, the turnover doesn't necessarily bother me from a practice standpoint, but it does make me wonder why people keep leaving... Finally, there used to be a great end-of-week Friday afternoon 26/2 class -- with music. A fun tradition, and a great way to kick off the weekend. Despite repeated assurances from the owner that it would be reinstated, it hasn't been. Again, schedules and classes change and that's understandable -- it's unkept promises that are concerning. So, it used to rock. It's just ok now...but unless you want a long drive, it's kind of the only game in town. PS -- Their cancellation policy is kind of BS. It's one thing to charge no-shows if a class is full and your no-show keeps someone else out. But with a well-managed wait list (which they have) and classes that usually AREN'T full, charging for cancellations within (what I think is now) 6 hours (used to be 12?) is kind of a lame money grab. Bad karma.

It was really easy to book a class and I thoroughly enjoyed it with Joseph. I downloaded the app and have found it easy to navigate. I love that it keeps your schedule after reserving classes. The things I didn't like are that there are not different levels, and there are no descriptions of the different classes on the app. After my free class they had a promotion for all the classes you can take in two weeks for $59. Without understanding all of the differences or knowing the instructors (some places have profiles on their websites), I booked several classes that worked with my schedule not knowing the differences, and definitely enjoyed two of my three classes so far. I appreciate the kindness of all of the instructors when they realize that someone is new, and the follow-up asking for feedback is nice as well. (I also received text asking how things were going and if I had any questions, yet when I wrote back with a question I never got a response.) A lot of regulars go here, which is encouraging as well. All ages too! I was feeling old but there are quite a few seniors, which made me feel comfortable with being somewhat out of practice. I have enjoyed most of the instructors who encouraged us to go at our own pace and don't single people out or embarrass anyone as some places do. I have come out drenching with sweat but feeling great! I have several classes to go so we'll see if I've found a new yoga home.

I have been going to re:fit for years for Pilates and Gyrotonics. I cannot say enough good things…read moreabout my instructor, Gretchen. When I started going to see her, I had occasional back pain stemming from an old injury and from bad posture. Gretchen helped me strengthen my back, and the Gyrotonics in particular helped me recognize when I was falling into a bad habit, like hunching up my shoulders while sitting in front of my laptop. Today, I am pain free. The whole environment at re:fit is wonderful. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. You feel the presence of a warm and supportive community the moment you walk in the door. They also have a number of alternative health services available, and I've been extremely happy with every service I tried. This business has my highest recommendation.

I have been a customer of instructor Noel for over 7 years. She has expertly guided me to a level of fitness I had not thought possible. Without a doubt my Pilates experience at re:fit is top notch. I have no more low back pain, my original reason for walking in their door. I consider re: fit one of the best businesses in Glenview.
