2026 is the year I've taking my health and well-being up a few notches. Last year I started reformer Pilates with my husband, biohacking and facial red light therapy. This year I decided to add full-body red light therapy at SweatHouz. Although SweatHouz is known for their private contrast therapy suites, I came here for the red light therapy (RLT). An IG ad for their intro RLT caught my eye so I purchased a session for $47 (regularly it's $149 as a standalone rate for a non-member). I was offered three additional sessions for $147. I did not hesitate to purchase the intro package. I mean, how could I not when I'm already a believer in red light therapy for my face, this would be amazing for the entire body. After completing my four sessions of RLT, I was considerering getting the one year package for unlimited visits, but I was also intrigued with trying contrast therapy (CT) and decided to give that a try before committing to the one year in case there were bundle deals for CT and RLT. After my first session of CT, I was hooked. I had no idea how invigorating it would feel. I have no issue doing the cold plunge, but I was not so sure about the sauna portion as I always felt like I was suffocating whenever I did sauna sessions several years ago. I did the 20-min. sauna to vitamin C shower rinse to 2-min. cold plunge, towel dried and repeated the cycle. The 172 degrees sauna wasn't as bad as I remember and was able to tolerate it just fine. As a newbie, I'll slowly increase the sauna portion over time to eventually do 40-min. before the 50-degree cold plunge. I felt invigorated, alert and euphoric after my session. No wonder CT is so popular. I decided to become a member with the help of Julie who provided me with more details on current promos (50% off RLT member rate for 10-pack sessions). I couldn't pass up this promo as well and purchased two 10-packs). The 10-pack has a 90-day expiration which would not be difficult to redeem by then. The facility is clean and modern which I love. The cleanliness and aesthetic as well as professional staff are important to me. I'm so glad that I saw that IG ad for this business. Another huge plus is that I'd be able to redeem my sessions at other SweatHouz locations so I'll be able to maintain my CT sessions while traveling (not all locations have RLT). The negative to my CT experience was that I couldn't connect to their wifi using the QR code posted inside the sauna so I was not able to cast my entertainment to the TV screen. I hope this is not an issue for all their CT suites. Cheers to a healthy and happy 2026 and beyond.

This is like the no pain no gain shock to your system kind of place. They have monthly memberships that are unlimited, or a one time pass for $40. The monthly pass or membership for like a year is cheaper in the long run if you come here often. They have clean personal saunas and then the cold shock bath. The room has its own shower with shampoo and soap. The ONE HOUR time limit starts immediately when you enter the room. This room includes the sauna, cold plunge, and shower. They give you like 2 towels and then you can relax and decompress after a hard days work or working out at the gym, or whatever. Plenty of parking and they offer lukewarm water to drink in the front that's flavored which is like meh. Wish they had ice cold water, but that's only for purchase.

I was really excited when SWTHZ opened in Colma and signed up for the founder unlimited membership. It wasn't cheap, but I went for it because I wanted to support a new wellness spot and was genuinely excited to use the facilities. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being more frustrating than enjoyable. The "free" session that wasn't free At the grand opening, they promoted a free session for members. After mine, though, I was charged right away. It made me wonder--was it really free? That felt like the first red flag. Staff and service issues During my first couple of weeks, I came in several times per week, yet almost every time I checked in, staff still asked if I was "new." Even after chatting with the same employees multiple times, it felt robotic and impersonal. As someone who works in customer support, I know how important it is to recognize repeat customers--it really sets the tone for the experience. One session, my sauna wasn't turned on. It started at 165° but the temperature kept dropping. I stepped out and asked a staff member for help. Instead of assisting me directly, she said she'd "get someone." After several minutes with no follow-up, I had to track down another employee myself. That person fixed it right away, while the first employee was just chatting with other members. Because of the delay, I lost a big chunk of my session. When I explained what happened, I was told I'd get a 90-minute session next time as compensation. I even rearranged my schedule to make sure I had time to use it. But when I came back, I was told that 90-minute sessions "don't exist" and was given a strange look for even asking. I ended up just doing my regular hour. When I asked about a partial refund for the lost session, I was told that they "don't refund anyone for any reason." Strict with customers, but not themselves Timing policies are rigid here. If you're even a minute late, time gets deducted from your session. I understand wanting to keep things on schedule, but the inconsistency is frustrating. Multiple times, the rooms weren't ready when I arrived. Sometimes staff would switch me to another unit (5 or 6), which I don't like--unit 5 is oversized, so it takes much longer to heat up, while unit 6 is so small it feels cramped, especially if your clothes are damp. In one case, my girlfriend was one minute late, but her original room wasn't ready. They moved her into a different room and still deducted three minutes from her session. How does that make sense? Would they have deducted the same time even if the cleaners hadn't finished the original room? This kind of lack of common sense in applying policies really bothered me. Facilities and equipment problems There were several smaller but recurring issues as well: The remotes and TVs sometimes didn't work, and when I asked, the solution was "just cast from your phone," which often didn't work either. The cold plunge occasionally looked pretty gross, with hair left behind from the session before. Staff sometimes started the timer before I had even stepped into the sauna, which meant I lost a minute or two just getting settled, changing, or setting up music/TV. Cancellation confusion After 3-4 months, I decided it was time to cancel. I submitted my cancellation form on the day I was charged, thinking that meant July would be my last month. A staff member confirmed that I was "all good." But then I got charged again in August. When I called, the owner explained that because I submitted the form on my billing date instead of the day before, my "30 days" counted for the next month instead of the current one. In other words, they require 30 days' notice, but even if you cancel right after your billing, you're still charged for another full month. To me, that feels misleading. Worse, I was told they "can't refund for any reason" because "corporate" controls everything. I pressed on this, because I was genuinely curious if there were any exceptions. I was told no, never. But when I pushed further and asked for a three-way conversation with corporate, I was suddenly placed on hold--and then magically told that corporate had approved a refund. So apparently refunds are possible, just not something they're upfront about. Final thoughts I gave this place several months, multiple chances, and plenty of patience. While the concept is great and there's clearly potential here, my overall experience was marked by inconsistent service, confusing policies, and equipment issues that made it hard to enjoy what I was paying for. If you get lucky with staff and everything goes smoothly, you might enjoy it. But if you expect reliable service and clear communication, I'd suggest waiting until they've worked out their growing pains--or looking elsewhere in the meantime.

It honestly feels like management doesn't care about cleanliness or the experience of their members. The front desk staff (the girl working Tuesday around 10 PM and the guy who said he was her boss) were extremely unwelcoming and rude. They spoke in a very aggressive and threatening manner and were clearly misrepresenting the information in the contract. Instead of helping or explaining things professionally, they tried to intimidate and confuse the situation. This kind of behavior from staff is completely unacceptable. The management is also very misleading. Their main goal is to sell you a membership at any cost, and once you sign up, they make it extremely difficult to cancel. They keep charging your card month after month even when you try to get out of the membership. I would strongly recommend staying away from this place. There are many better, cleaner, and more honest gyms in the area.

Based on the size of the gym another setup of cable machines should be added. It is a tight fit in that area. Large locker room. Showers do not have any soap dispensers so be sure to bring your own. Each PF choose to provide it or do not, this one does not. Many people choose to use the bathroom stalls as changing rooms, forcing patrons that actually need to use the stall for what they are intended for to wait. One stall actually does not have a toilet in it. There are signs in the gym that ask patrons to be mindful of their time on equipment which is great. Unfortunately, there are no signs stating patrons should be listening to music with headphones. Each day I came in, a gentleman was playing his music loud from his phone and singing along. When asked for him to turn it down and also off, he rolled his eyes. The facility is clean. Staff is hit or miss upon check-in. One didn't even look up from his book when I walked up in the morning.

The very first day we walked into their showroom close to closing time, Nick went above and beyond by staying late to walk us through the different models. He was incredibly patient and worked diligently to keep everything within our budget. The installer, Moises, and his team were absolutely amazing. They were highly professional, and the finished fireplace looks incredibly sleek! What truly blew us away, though, was their integrity. After the initial installation, Moises didn't feel 100% satisfied with how one element sat. Instead of just leaving it, he took the initiative to come back out and spend another four hours correcting it to perfection. That tells you exactly what kind of team you are dealing with here. If something isn't completely right, they have the conscience and professionalism to come back and make it perfect. They won't just leave you high and dry to rush off to the next job. I would highly recommend Berkeley Heat to anyone. Great prices, a quality product, and unmatched customer service!

Longer version: I actually started out working with another store (Penguin in San Jose) who did a truly spectacular job replacing an old wood burning fireplace with a Mendota gas insert, in another house. The other store was willing to give me a bid for our house in SF. Due to the existing natural stone opening being small vertically, they would only propose installing a Regency Gi25LE which is a beautiful insert but also super tiny. To get an idea what it looked like, I visited Berkeley Heat in person, and to my surprise they told me they could install the significantly larger Gi29LE by having their installer cut open the existing natural stone surround and modifying the existing zero clearance firebox. There was some back and forth with their installer; I also wanted to do this with permit and decided to have my own electrician do the electrical, and my own plumber install the gas line with a permit. (Their installer was not familiar with permitting in SF.) It took a couple months all told - and I had to do the follow-ups by phone to ensure we stayed on schedule - but the final result is fantastic. See photos I am adding.
