There was a whole lot of just rubbing my legs and rubbing my feet during the foot massage. I kept telling her to apply pressure, but she wasn't hitting any pressure points. I came here today because Groupon had a special for one hour massage and a one hour facial initially. The lady at the front desk check-in was amazing and the therapist named Ami gave me a full body. I then proceeded to be walked over to another room for a facial with Apple. It took her about 10 minutes to enter, and then once I sat down, it was not clearly explained to me that I was getting a European facial. She kept trying to communicate to me what she was going to do and I couldn't understand which is completely fine. I just opted for the facial that I booked, but then she proceeded to go on with the facial and I felt like she was literally just slapping my face. I clearly thought that it should've included a neck and shoulder massage which it didn't and then once she proceeded to put the mask on my face she was literally gone for a good 15 to 20 minutes so I have no idea what was going on at the time of my service. I graciously tipped Amy because our service was amazing and I gave apple a little less . Was shocked the manager at the front desk kept asking have you tipped? TLDR; We ended up paying the Groupon plus $29 each and instead of getting a 150 minute body and foot massage, with hot stone, salts, and oil; we got 20-25 min foot massage and 30-40 minutes body massage with about 1 minute of hot rocks and no salt scrub nor oils. Then we sat in a warm room for about 5 minutes. --- I bought the couples 150 minute foot and body massage with salt sauna package. We got there and they said it was a $9 each upgrade if we wanted stones, oil, and salt scrub. We decided yes so paid an additional $18 on top of the Groupon. They then brought us to an unprepared room, we sat in the chair, waited about 5-10 minutes, then they brought in a bucket of warm water to foot soak for about 10 minutes, then they took our feet out and prepped towels into the warmer, then massaged our feet for about 20-25 minutes. Not once did they use the stones, salt, nor oils. This whole time the door was open and both of our people were talking to each other. Not sure what they were saying but their faces were not very nice and looked like they were arguing. There was also commotion outside and unable to relax. Then they brought us into another room to change for the body massage. This is one of the worst massages I've had, there was no skill and all elbow or awkward hand pushes, it seemed as though they had no training. They used the rocks for about 30seconds to a minute on each of us, but no salts nor oils. They also walked in and out of the room constantly. We were in that room total for 60 minutes but time spent working on me was 30-40 minutes. Then they walked us into a warm room that I wouldn't even call a sauna, I believe my house gets hotter in the summer. She laid a towel down on each side and told us to lay but my hips were bigger than the skinny bench so not at all comfortable plus it was hard tiles with only a thin towel as padding. We sat in there about 5 minutes and then got out and walked around to ask if there was something for our last hour and couldn't find anyone in the back area. We then got dressed and walked out from to ask if there was anything for the last hour of the massage and she said it was an hour sauna. I said it's fine we'll leave early, and then she proceeded to demand tips. They had a sign with tipping rates. I had 2 $20s so handed her that (20 for each of us) and she proceeded to point down to the bottom of the list saying our treatment was 2.5 hours. I was genuinely pleased and even excited to return in the future and bring my fiancé along. Unfortunately, what should have been a peaceful, rejuvenating visit ended with a really disappointing and uncomfortable experience. As we were leaving, one of the front desk staff called me back loudly, which made me think there was an issue with the payment. Instead, she asked, "Are you going to tip your ladies?" I told her I would give each of them $5. She then pointed to a sign on the counter that listed a "suggested tip" of $15-$20 per massage therapist, and insisted that's what we were expected to give. After already paying $240 for the service, being pressured to tip an additional $40 felt completely inappropriate. Tipping should be a personal choice -- not something a customer is shamed or guilted into, especially not in such a public and uncomfortable manner. To make things worse, the way the staff handled this situation made my mother-in-law feel extremely embarrassed and anxious. She even began checking both of her bank accounts at the front desk to see if she had extra money to give the therapists -- just so we wouldn't be treated poorly. That kind of pressure is unacceptable, especially in a place that's supposed to promote peace and relaxation. We had also paid for the additional aromatherapy, salt, and hot stone upgrades, as suggested by staff at the beginning -- yet there was no salt or aromatherapy provided during the session. It felt misleading and unprofessional. I typically go to Crystal Cove Spa, where I consistently receive excellent service without being upsold or pressured. Used to come here for massages long time ago and stopped visiting for a while. I had a Thai massage yesterday morning but still have stiffness in my upper back and neck. I felt that I need some extra boost. Did some digging and realized that this place also offered sauna and French/korean scrub treatment. So I wanted to give it a shot. Originally, we agree to have the scrub first then sauna. When I arrived, was told the scrub would have to wait after sauna (my guess is that they booked the therapist to another appointment). That is okay but I want to rinse first. The front desk got a lady to take me between rooms. The set up here is very awkward. The shower room is also the scrub treatment room and it is far from the sauna room. I was taken there with a box of a robe and towel. Okay... I started to rinse.. once I was done, I couldn't find the lady who took me here and I didn't know where to go. Flagged someone down and they were able to find the lady who took me to the sauna room. I originally booked for 30 min but the temp was comfortable so I asked to increase to an hour and was able to get it. The sauna room has heated salt bricks around the wall, bench and the floor. Towels and pillows were there and a jug of water was provided. My sweat started to show around 30 min mark. I wish they had a cold plunge nearby but i appreciated the privacy for the private sauna room. Could definitely do hot yoga here. When I was done, once again, couldn't find the girl. I walked up to front desk and ran into the girl. She didn't remember that I had a scrub session after and she went to check with the front desk. I went back to sauna and continued to wait. She came back after and took me back to the scrub room. I took a cold shower and waited for my scrub therapist. I didn't have any instructions on what to do next.. Someone showed up after. She was surprised that I still had my robe on. I told her I didn't know what to do next ( there were two tables in the room). She settled me into one of the tables and started the session. It was a French salt scrub session not a Korean scrub. I am okay with it. She was very thorough and I had probably one of the most thorough scrub ever ( I have been doing scrub sessions regularly at many places with different styles). After the session, I needed a rinse. The hot water did take a while to come out and the therapist here don't start the shower for you. The complimentary shampoo/conditioner and body wash were available but they are drug store products. I took another shower at home after. When I checked out and doing the tips, I was told that she was really just helping out and I was lucky. The pricing here is incredibly reasonable. Overall, the value here is pretty high. But you do want to adjust your expectations. Setup is a bit odd. Slightly cold in the shower room. Service could be better (no easy way to find people and lack of instructions between services). But value is good. I enjoyed my time here overall and people were friendly. read more

I came here to try their scalp therapy, which is common in Asia but has been catching on here! I was excited to visit spas that offer this service. But this review is based on that one visit! This place is only okay for this. My appt was with Apple. She's nice and she worked hard, and the head/shoulder massage was pretty good. But the overall experience was not very inspiring. It's not bad, but not great either. My gold standard is VN Beauty in LA (I feel okay sharing that since this place is in SoCal, otherwise, it's just rude!) I think these kinds of services are meant to be relaxing/pampering more than actually clinically therapeutic. With that in mind, WL just didn't really have the relaxation factor down. The water sound was LOUD, you can hear it rushing through the pipes. There was lots of banging and clattering as bottles, buckets, and whatever else was used were moved chaotically around my head, completely shattering any sense of serenity. And the head massage was done without the shampoo or conditioner's smoothing effect, so my hair was caught and pulled unnecessarily. It was just kind of uncomfortable overall. You know you're not enjoying spa when you're looking forward to it ending. Tbh, this is on par with my previous visit to WL for a foot massage years ago. Like... the place obviously has a much larger operation than an average spa, and kudos to them for that... but I just feel like they're not very intuitive about how to "touch" in a pampering or nurturing way. Their massage therapists aren't very good at reading the customers' bodies or delivering the right pressure, it's all a bit perfunctory, like they're just going through the motion. The treatment including the following Four steps: One: scalp health condition check (optional, up to you) with warm eye mask on ; Two: clean hair and head massage; Three: hair nourishment -- steaming and neck and hand massage and Four hair blow drying. ( for review purpose, I requested them to take pictures, and they are nicely accepted. Pictures worth thousands of words here). Some highlights on the four steps, the massage strength and point pressing was great, which helped me with my headache quite a lot. Meanwhile, the hair care products they use are really professional "Redken", after the treatment my hair look much nicer , also silky when I touched it. It was my third time at Water Lounge Spa, but first time at the Millbrae location. Found parking right in front of the spa, took the elevator up to check in with the manager at the front counter. I made a reservation about a week prior for 3 facials and was given a heads up that for the deep cleaning option, the esthetician has to evaluate your face to see if it's good for your skin. We ended up getting the Collagen and Ultrasound Treatment instead. I got the 5 times bundle and was able to use the 3 times at my visit. You receive a card that you sign every time you visit to keep track of how many facials you have left. Im not really sure of the difference between the European facial and that treatment...It felt like the standard treatment: face massage, steam, scraped at my nose (painful but worth it), got into some problem spots around my temple, face mask, more face massage and also massaged my shoulders, head, ears, and neck. I felt totally relaxed and almost fell asleep listening to the soothing music while laying in the heated bed. I also had a milia removed for $10. Highly recommend booking with Apple! Timing was spot on. They offer water, tea and crackers at the end. My grandma wasn't able to lay flat on her back so they went out of their way to bring one of their sofa chairs inside the room so she can comfortably sit. Great service! Got a Groupon deal and decided to give it a try. Easy to reserve and no hassle in using it. This place is on the second floor, very big! Their other location, San Mateo, has a jacuzzi pool, this site doesn't. Front staff is friendly and speaks Mandarin. After checking in, we were asked if we wanted to upgrade the massage from Swedish to deep tissue, I honestly had no idea of the differences so I said no. Then we were asked if we wanted to get the $9 special of hot stone, sea salt bag and aromatic oil. Our deal was 150 minutes of treatment and it started with an hour of foot massage. Unlike other Chinese foot massage places where they use herbal soup to soak the feet, this one only uses warm hot water. But the service was ok, they were able to hit the right spots for me. After that, we were led into the connecting room for full body massage. This lasted an hour with hot stone and oil. I couldn't smell how aromatic the oil is, so I had to assume they used that. Overall the massage was good and comfortable. After that, we were given a robe and led to the hot salt sauna room where it was decorated with salt along the wall and very heated benches to sit on. There's water and some crackers. After 30 minutes we were sweating! Nobody knocked on our door to remind us the time, but naturally it became too hot to stay and we came out. While we were looking/hoping for a shower place, someone led us to the shower room. We weren't sure if there's a lock on the shower room door, so we had to shower very quickly. There were 2 massage tables inside the shower room, very weird. Not much amenities other than the shower gel, shampoo and conditioner maybe (not well labeled). They did have slippers which was great since I wasn't dressed to get wet. Overall I would say the facility is huge like a maze (I got lost looking from the restroom from my room), but inside each room it's pretty basic. Not much decoration, just the plain and simple furniture. There's relaxing music playing the whole time. As for tips, there's a tip map at the front desk and tips are accepted by credit cards too; anywhere from $15-$30 per hour per person is the guide. Having enjoyed my time at their San Mateo location, I thought I would have the same experience at the Millbrae location. I did not. 1. I saw two ladies simply rinse their hands in the restroom. No soap was involved, and they literally just turned the water on and ran them under it for a second. 2. My masseuse did only half my body scrub. He didn't scrub the front of my body. 3. This same masseuse only massaged the back half of my body and the front of my arms. He didn't touch my legs. 4. The esthetician left the room at least 7 times (no lie), was talking through my facial to the esthetician next to her that was doing my friend, and some guy kept coming to talk to her. Nothing about this experience was relaxing. It left me less relaxed than I was when I got there. Super disappointed. I told the front desk, and their solution was to offer me a free 30 minute sauna. Typically do to a different massage place but wanted to try this out since it's right next to the gym. I decided to get the Swedish massage and my bf got the foot massage both for 60 min. I was led to a private room and told the massage lady that I wanted more focus on my neck and lower back. She would knead me constantly with her knuckles and since she was bony it wasn't comfortable. The pounding on the back and head massage was extremely uncomfortable. Never had someone pull on my head and limbs in that kind of way. Like I was a rag doll and then suddenly left to flop down. I also insisted I didn't want my lower body done but she kept insisting and had me remove my pants which I didn't feel comfortable doing but because of the language barrier, i just agreed. I came out of this in more pain than when I walked in. My bf said the first 10-15 min of his 60 min foot massage was just soaking his foot and when he told the guy to put more pressure he said it was still weak like being tickled. When I got home and took a shower I noticed soreness in all parts of my body and my bf noticed a bruise on my neck!!! I've gotten massages and never walked out with a bruise. Not sure why this place has such a low rating. We opted for the couples massage. When we got there we got this amazing foot massage together. The guy really got into my foot and made me feel all looose. After the foot massage, we got the full body massage. That was pure bliss the entire time. The guy was really working into me. I felt my body become more and more relaxed. Finally we got some water and a little snack while sitting in the sauna room. We got a great deal from Groupon and it came out to be less than 100 per person for the couples massage. Again, not sure why this place is rated so low. Worth a try! read more

It was my second time coming here today and I had a bad experience. My first time was amazing, which is why I came back. I brought my boyfriend with me and everything went fine until after the massage. We went to the front desk lady to give a tip for the ladies that did our massage. We told them that we wanted to give them $10 each and the front desk lady says "can you at least give them $15" while pointing at the TIP SUGGESTION sign. Knowing the amount that we already had spent here, her saying this made us feel pressured and uncomfortable. I completely understand that tips are appreciated, but being asked for a higher amount after we had already decided what to give just did not feel right. First of all, the front desk person is almost always late to work, which is EXTREMELY annoying. Secondly, while I appreciate the convenience of the new online booking system, the front desk person is always unaware of the online reservations, even if the reservations are made days in advance. In addition, the online system allows you to choose a specific staff member. But I am told by the front desk person that the staff selection actually doesn't show up on her computer.
