Just passing by and stopped in to get my sons haircut before his Bday week. We had great conversations with both barbers. Very friendly as most of Oregon has been. I've been going to Swedes for about 8 years, and my go-to barber, Maggie, was suddenly let go without notice by the new management. I went there because Maggie was there. I've now found Maggie in her new location, and I'm continuing with her. She was quick and efficient, obviously experienced, but she could have concentrated more on the cut and the details, and me, instead of talking so much about herself. She complained about her life the whole time. 4 stars is more about the cut and the price than the overall experience. read more

I asked the guy(the one in the middle chair) to give my son a fade and line it up. He acted like he knew what he was doing, but my sons hair is all choppy and he literally lined up(very poorly) one side of my sons head, the line on the back of his head isn't even straight, and then didn't even line up the other side. There's no fade he just cut it short on the very bottom and longer on top. I now have to go somewhere else and hopefully somebody else can fix it. read more

My long hair experiment failed :( Every 5-ish years I "rebel" and think I'm gonna show the world just what's up. The same thing happens EVERY time. My melon starts looking a little unruly, the wife starts making comments about it and I fend her off. A couple times I made it to the "very long" stage, though. I had a sweet mullet in high school, too. Eventually I end up getting sick of it and go the exact opposite route. Swede's has been my barber shop of choice for over a decade. There are other, fancier barber shops that are cheaper, but I don't give a rat's ass. I like the old school vibe at Swede's and I'm just comfortable there, y'know? I don't need a Pabst while watching Sportscenter on a giant flat screen as some trollop in a tight shirt is flitting around my head. Make fun of 'em about the lack of cable television if you stop by. I have a hair cutting phobia, it scares me. Seriously. That's why I wait months in between cuts and then get a super short hair cut and let it grow out. So it came time while here in Portland that I needed to face my fear again, my hair was looking Gene Simmons like. I searched on Yelp, and found this place. I went, bring CASH, or checks. Luckily WAMU was around the corner for me. I arrived and was seated immediately. My barber, I didn't catch his name, was a very nice gentleman and we kept a nice conversation. Travel, music, peeing on the side of the road. I hope my hair grows fast so I can get another cut before I leave Portland. read more

This is a good barber shop. That's all my review should have to say, but if I must explain it to the uninitiated, a "good barber shop" is a rare thing these days. If you find one, you should remember it. This is one. Nothing fancy. Good, solid cuts. Everything from little kids on booster seats getting buzz cuts and jokingly being offered a hairy lollipop afterward, to senior citizens having their wispy, white locks being carefully trimmed while talking about the Ducks or Beavers or their latest golf round. Two hints: if you go on a Saturday, go late in the day. It's packed in the mornings. And bring cash. They don't take cards. read more

12 years now I've been a Swede's loyalist. I take my two boys (ages 7 & 5) and have since each was 2 1/2. Great barbershop in every way. Great fade, great price, and always good conversation. Flanked by a Starbucks and one of Portland's best Vietnamese restaurants, it's always worth the drive from Tualatin. Best to go on weekdays as it can get busy Saturdays. read more

It really isn't very easy to find a good barbershop. I can cut my own hair as well as half the places that claim to be barbershops. I know what to ask for when describing a haircut. Increasingly you have to go to a salon and pay a small mint to someone overqualified for the job just to get your wishes met. This is a good barbershop. Maggie cut my hair and gave me exactly what I wanted. I went mid-morning during the week, walked right in and sat down. There are no frills here. Just a good haircut. read more

Ok, I can't believe I'm writing this but here we are. If you are like me and you despise Trump and anyone who approves of him, you may want to steer clear of this place. The older gentleman that cut my hair started by ignoring my clear lack of interest in sports, then I got to hear him applaud the Trump Administration for dismantling the EPA. It ended in a bland military style cut and a trip to the ATM because they only take cash. Sounds like a nightmare? It should. Avoid this place. read more

But it has recently gone under new ownership and the new owner is getting rid of some of the folks that have been there for years and ruining the family feel it has always had. I'm a regular, Ricky and Steve are the guys to see. Nothing fancy, and not expensive, these guys are really Barbers. Men's hair. The chick that works there is NOT a Barber, be sure to skip her. I get a bald fade and have friends who get executive business haircuts, Steve and Ricky are the guys. I hate having to deal with haircuts. I'm a geezer, but I'm vain. I don't want to have to fuss with my hair, just wash and go, but still look ok. I'old enough to remember when haircuts use to cost a couple of bucks, and too much foofy stuff just pisses me off. I've been coming to Swede's barber shop for almost 6 years now, and I highly recommed you give it a try, too. I can almost guarantee you'll be return again and agian. I always choose to have Steve Webber cut my hair. Personally, I think this classic trained barber is among the best in Portland, and certainly the best on the west side of town. Over the years, Steve has seen me go from long to short, to now thinning hair. I don't give him much to work with these days, but he always delivers a first class haircut. This is a real barber shop, a relic of times past, not a salon trying to be a barber shop. This is the real deal, guys. You won't get a free beer, nor be serviced by a young beauty weating a tight top, and fresh out of cosmetology school, who will ask you what number you want--and then snap on a plastic attachment. C'mon, those are to barbering what training weels are to a bicycle! (Take the hint, Larry?! He's the "barber" stationed at the last chair). You won't find a big screen tv here either. But you will get a good haircut, at a reasonable price, and experience what a barber shop used to be like--sports talk, men's issues, and old magazines included. read more

I've gone from salons to barbers and have close friends whom are in fact barbers. Over the last week I've gone to Swede's twice; the first time for myself and the second for my son. The interaction and atmosphere is friendly... To a point. In regards to my haircut, I understood how misunderstanding occurred. It's a newer style and it was my own error in going to an "old school" barber. My son's however is a standard men's 2-3 fingerlength on top. He went in while I went to get cash (cash only) and when he said 3 on top, it was verified if he meant buzz cut or not *after* the first buzz was swiped off the top center... Relegating little choice but to finish even as my son hates buzz cuts. His disappointment was evident, it being the day before school began didn't help either. We were charged full price with no apology and we found even the buzz cut was uneven! We shall not be returning. We paid this time without any price reduction or waiving the cost but further cash from what easily could have been a returning customer (unhappy but put a little at ease due to compassion and ownership of both a mistake and a poor job that I could have done better, and in fact had to fix, at home) is lost at this place of business. I'm very disappointed but not so much as a certain 12 y.o. who has to wait for a shoddy job fixed at home to grow back out. Tough lesson. read more
