A dive, not dive bar. I liked the space and the bars are close to the band. We came to see FAT MEZZ - who I really think are going to make it big! Probably my fourth time seeing them. I actually really enjoy this bar, the ambiance, the drinks and people are friendly. However, the sound dude has no idea what the hell he's doing. It can easily turn a very good band to a mediocre one all because he keeps the bass and the drums up too high and the singer mic too low. It makes it hard to follow the songs or even hear the singer. read more

This place has been around forever. It's had its ups and downs, but it's up right now and doing pretty good. The drinks are good as well as the food and the bartenders are great. I love going there to watch the live music, grab a couple drinks and have something to eat. I wish the menu was bigger, but what's on it is good. read more

Ordered Boneless wings and a chicken Caesar wrap. Might have been the worst wings I've ever had. They were dry and tasteless. The wrap that I ordered came in a salad form. Will not be ordering food from this place again. read more

All around excellent local bar! There are two full bar areas inside with lots of seating, so it never feels too crowded even on a busy night. Plenty of flatscreen TVs always tuned to sports, two pool tables and electronic dart boards make it a great place to hang out and unwind after a long week -- which is made even better by the live music they host every Friday and Saturday night (most often without a cover). The prices are very reasonable on a normal day and they always have some sort of special going, whether it's for drinks or food (as is the case with their free Eagles half-time buffet). The place is a bit hard to judge from the outside, so it took my wife and I a while to stop by for the first time, but since then this has become our go to bar. Saw a fantastic band here tonight. I like watching bands in this location because there is a lot of seating close to the stage. Bar tenders were fantastic! Good selection of drink options. Bar tender recommended green tea shots and they were seriously amazing. Music sounded great! Even had a great pinball machine near the exit as we left. My friend ordered a quesadilla. It was kind of awful and was sent back not eaten. Maybe other foods are better. I definitely go back for live music, especially to see this band again. Flannel was the name of tonight's band. They do 90's grunge covers and they do them well! I highly recommend seeing them you are down with Pearl Jam, Green Day, and Nirvana songs. read more

Much like Tally Ho -- this guy gets two stars for being a smoking bar. I love the lack of pretension from the clientele. Two pool tables, a dart board and a back room with an island bar and stage for live bands. The music the night I was there was pretty crappy (not a fan of mediocre hardcore cover bands). Was pretty annoyed that the bartender didn't tell us that a pitcher would've been more cost effective than the three pints we bought at the same time. read more

Not worth the cover charge (which they charge on weekends, no clue if it's similar for week days). They do have take out, but it's quite expensive, even for your average macro brews. I was disappointed in their lack of good crafts beers (though they did have Dogfishhead at least), and their general prices tended to be a little more than similar bars in the area. The only reason I can see myself going back is for the live music, otherwise there's not much that's exceptional about this place. read more

Stopped in for a Metallica cover band and a few beers which eventually turned into lots of beers and a few shots... typical old man bar (couple pool tables, tv's and the scent of stale beer) I'd stop back again depending on the cover band. I didn't try the food but the wings looked pretty good. read more

We've been here 2 more times since my first review and those times have been great. I can't say enough how awesome and accommodating the staff is here. Last night my boyfriend's band was playing again. We all got an awesome deal for our friends and I, $25 open bar for 3 hours which included well drinks and domestic bottles. But this one patron there was giving my two friends a difficult time, the patron ended up throwing a beer bottle at my friend and immediately got kicked out! We appreciate the staff being thoughtful and checking up on my friend who was extremely upset and also made sure that we were all safe outside leaving the bar. It's unfortunate that the patron was a drunk idiot, but the bar handled it very well. read more

My wife and I met some old friends here last night for a reunion of sorts. The food was fantastic! I am not much of a bar fare person but this place exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for classy, Sweeney's is not it. Although the laid back atmosphere is great for all (above 21) ages. The people are friendly, the bartenders are fun. The bands aren't the best, but drinks are cheap and everyone knows your name. With pool tables, dart boards, live (not always good) music, video games and food, there is something for everyone. It even offers take out beer. not being forced to go outside for a smoke is a plus as well. read more

If you are in a band and especially a traveling band I strongly urge you to not play here. The woman running the show had no idea what she was doing and complained about our lack of a crowd when we drove 6 hours to be there. The soundman not only has no clue how to do his job but he snaps at you if you ask for something as simple as a guitar in the monitor. No music venue is perfect but if you're gonna have an out of town band the least you can do is be a little nicer to them and be a lot more organized. If you can't do both of those things maybe you should rethink your career path. If you are reading this and are on your way there or getting ready to leave to go there just cancel and play somewhere else. oh yeah.. they won't pay you either.. read more

Sweeney's is a staple of the far-northeast Philly nightlife scene. They have tons of TVs for catching a game throughout the building, great food & best of all, great drink specials. The staff @ Sweeney's has always been great in the years I have been going there. Layout: - Their back bar room is great for catching a local band & roomy enough to accommodate plenty at the large bar or at one of the dozen or so tables. TVs throughout out this large room as well. The wait staff is top notch. - They have 2 pool tables & a dart machine in the next room....kind of their game room if you will, with a few TV's all set to sports. - The front bar has the most TVs & plenty of seating. Definitely the best part of the bar if you stopped in to catch a game. Food & Drink: - Sweeney's offers a full menu of traditional bar food, with a few surprises. Their wings are great, but the best sandwich on the menu is the "hot roast beef". - The drinks are very well priced & there are some great drink special nightly. Service: - The one problem that most "corner bars" suffer from is they only cater to the "regulars", well Sweeney's is the exception. I can't remember ANYONE ever complain that it took more than 1-2 minutes to get a drink. Sweeney's is in a great location: a few minutes & you could be on Route 1, the PA Turnpike or 95. I have often driven 20 minutes or more to Sweeney's, rather than visit a closer bar. Stop in & check it out for yourself. read more

A fun place with nice people but I don't smoke. Some places that allow smoking are tolerable because they have good ventilation with filters. This isn't one of then. Sweeney's had a refreshing, kind of laid-back atmosphere. Despite the fact that it been here for years, it really gets overshadowed by flashier bars, so it like a best kept secret of Philly for those in-the-know. Pretentiousness? Nah. Bad customer service? Not while I've ever been there. I don't go all the time but when I need a reminder of what decent people are like, I go to Sweeney's. The low-key atmosphere and clientele make it a perfect place to live music and the times I've been there when a band was, the band also fit this comfortable environment. The first time I went there wasn't a band, and the next couple times were locals, but this last time I was really something special-a band who I think said were from Chicago called Liquor Boxx who brought the house down and I think got every girl's attention in the room, especially when the guitarist lifted a girl on his shoulders while he kept playing! Their soulful rock vibed really well with Sweeney's and made for an incredibly fun combination. read more
