Finally got here! Ye Olde Ale House My good buddy Erik Malmberg has been telling me about these beef sandwiches since the day I first met him. Recently, The Godfather of Meat did a keen review and video, in which everything looked awesome. It took us about 45 minutes from Emmaus, and it was worth the trip. House made roasted beef with the house gravy on a sensational Kaiser roll -- was what we came for and they delivered! Piled high and fresh with provolone cheese. This is the best beef sandwich I have had in decades. Simple quality at its finest! This has quickly become my gold standard classic beef sandwich. The "Matt Fries", were interesting and completely unique: fresh crispy fries topped with generous black pepper, old bay seasoning, Parmesan cheese and Turkey gravy. It worked! We enjoyed them and the large portion was more than enough for 2-3 people. Steph Rush very much enjoyed the mussels in red sauce -- another generous portion, served with was bread. I had an order of the cold shrimp , which is weekends only. Fresh, cooked perfectly and extra horseradish in the cocktail sauce by request. I like the vibe of this place. You can tell it is a neighborhood staple. No frills, been here forever. A solid roast beef sandwich. Where the stars are lacking for me is on cleanliness amd attention to detail. Mozzarella sticks were cold in the middle. Tables and chairs need to be wiped down better. Had a craving for a good roast beef sandwich and remembered the 'godfather of meat' just raved about this place. First off the place was packed. We secured the last booth available, ordered our drinks and anxiously awaited the infamous beef sandwiches. To say I was disappointed is a bit harsh, but worthy of such high accolades they are not. It is a decent fresh made beef sandwich, but nothing compared to DiNics. I would also rate Bob Morton's over this sandwich as well. Probably on par with Old original Nicks in Springfield- but their gravy fries are superior over the Olde Ale House. We also ordered wing that were overcooked , dry and only adorned with basic hot sauce, lacking the flavor profile we prefer. A good place to try, a decent sandwich and friendly service. What a good old school dive bar with excellent food. We got here at 2:15 pm on a Saturday and the place was packed! Our server was so nice and attentive. We had to sit at a table because there was no room at the bar, which was fine. We ended up getting the fries with gravy, wings (they only have one sauce, but they make it, not too hot according to the guys I was with). Wings were crispy and big. I had the liverwurst w/raw onion on white toast. The other people I was with had their famous roast beef sandwiches. They were fantastic. And if you use a debit/credit card, they don't charge extra! Love ye olde ale house! I was pretty much raised at this place and have never lost my love for their roast beef sandwiches. My favorite thing to get is roast beef with outside, American cheese, dry with gravy on the side. Their gravy is SOO good. We always order fries with our sandwiches and I've had the cheese fries and their continental fries, both are great! And can't forget the birch beer to round out the meal! It's definitely a "cheers" atmosphere and the service is no frills, but always good. Hope ye olde ale house will be around for many, many more years! read more

I'm really sorry to leave this review because I really used to like this place. The food used to be great. Always looked forward to a roast beef sandwich. After tonight I don't think I'll be going back there anymore. I don't know if they have a different cook, but I'm sorry I went there for dinner. Their sandwiches are not the same anymore. The food is prepared great, no argument there. Then Service though has issues. This is the 3rd time in a row I've experienced issue. For perspective I've gone there alot so 3 out of countless other times of service isn't much. But I will never go back, granted I'm a drop in the bucket of this institution. But when a friend offers to buy a drink for you from the bar and your at a table and the bartender feels he is to busy to accommodate the request because it might effect the server or it's the mindset that I shouldn't get service from the bar. This place is okay. Dive bar atmosphere. They are known for their roast beef sandwiches, but not really sure why. Cold deli-style roast beef served on a kaiser role with a side of bland gravy. Someone in our party had the buffalo chicken strips and liked them. Service is quick and gruff. Fine for a quick bite to eat, or to have a couple drinks at the bar, but nothing special. read more

A neighborhood staple for decades! When we first moved to the Philly area 12 years ago, the first thing I was told by my mentor that we had to go to Ye Olde Ale House. Each visit (well over a dozen visits now) has been a wonderful experience, with food, service, and price. Their hot roast beef sandwiches are so very good, and a great value. The Ye Olde Ale House was definitely not on their game this afternoon. This great ale house is known for their amazing roast beef sandwiches. Haven't been here in quite a while and I was so excited to get my sandwich. I ordered my roast beef sandwich wet - meaning ....your roll is dipped in the gravy along with a side, container of gravy for dipping your sandwich. I was truly disappointed today ,it was rare with lots of gristle . Spit out more then I could chew. Waitress didn't seem to care nor did she try to get me a new sandwich. Definitely was not what I thought it would be today. The wings were fantastic and the beer was cold. I don't think I'd try them again for quite awhile. We came here for lunch first time on a random Tuesday. It was VERY crowded but we managed to grab a booth. They have 5 booths and the rest are tables and at the bar seats. Our waitress was super friendly and salt of the earth. It seemed like she had been working there for a very long time - she asked us if we needed a menu. I guess a lot of the people that come in there know what they're getting - but yes we asked for one. They have A LOT of beers on tap and a very nice variety. The place is no frills and has an old time throw back vibe. Which I loved. The ambiance is what it is and you're not there for anything fancy. The prices are very reasonable. A lot of the people there seem to be regulars and just know what they're getting. It was very apparent within the first 10 minutes the most popular menu item is the roast beef sandwich. The roast beef is sliced as needed and is NOT fatty. You can either have the gravy on the sandwich or on the side. We opted for on the side since we could regulate things and sharp provolone on a Kaiser roll. We also decided to mix it up and get a turkey club on rye bread - I asked for the bacon to be VERY crispy and I was not disappointed. It did take a little bit of time for the turkey club - this is fresh sliced turkey breast (not deli turkey) so if you're in a rush - maybe not the option for you. The food was underwhelming especially considering the price. Prices are vastly greater in person than what is reflected online. For example the scallop platter was $12 online and $18 in person. Over multiple items that is a huge difference. The prices could be justified if the portions were at least generous or the food was high quality. Unfortunately neither statement is true. The quality of the food was low.The scallop platter looked like a kids meal with it's portions. We stopped here to get a gift card for my dad, and decided to get dinner while here. Got some beers. I wanted a fruity beer or cider but they didn't have any on tap, just basic beers pretty much. I ordered a Stella, but the one they gave me tasted like an IPA. I gave it to my husband and took his which was supposed to be a Pilsner. Unless they just mixed the both of ours up, but I don't think Pilsners are supposed to taste hoppy. I dunno... I got the roast beef sandwich which is their special. It was pretty tasty and I liked the gravy they put on it. I'll have to ask for more on the side next time, could have used a little more. It could have been a little bit hotter it was sort of like luke warm. And I could have used a bigger plate also- they give you the smallest paper plates which are like side plates. We also got onion rings which were good. They weren't the beer battered ones which I was used to, but they tasted kind of like the funion snacks, but they were still good. Overall a solid meal, enjoyed it. It's a no frills place. Would go back to get that sandwich again sometime if we're driving by. We literally live right down the street and could walk there. Ye Olde Ale House has delivered amazing service and product standards that have stood for decades. Service may seem abrupt at first, but just remember that you are in Philadelphia. In Philly, you are always in a hurry and you are always in a line. When in said line you will notice the impatience of the people in front and behind you. Please brush it off, it will be worth it. The Kaiser roll, hand sliced beef with meticulously crafted gravy assembled together will put your mind at ease! An excellent, regular bar and restaurant... Inexpensive, friendly and attentive service, good food, and a good drink selection. I'd been to Ye Olde Ale House a number of times years ago, but since it's been more than ten years since I've had regular reason to be in that neighborhood, I'd half forgotten about it. I went back because my great aunt (who's in the back half of her 90s) said she loved the roast beef sandwiches and wanted to go with me. It was great! It has a regular neighborhood dive bar vibe, with the friendly service, buzz of casual conversations, etc., that you want in a place like that. The bartender welcomed us as soon as we walked in the door. While they were very busy and the only table for us needed clearing, they got it cleared off and cleaned immediately. Our server was fast and friendly. I noticed she could handle the different sorts of tables that come in there: polite with my aunt, friendly with the young kids at another table, witty in her banter with a table of jokesters. That can't be an easy job, but she did it great. And, the roast beef sandwich didn't disappoint. The sandwiches are $8. If you want fries or something on the side, that's an extra few bucks. Sandwiches might taste great and ambiance might be great, but it doesn't matter if it makes you sick! Was there yesterday and observed carver without gloves texting several times, touching his lower leg, countertops, door handles, and his apron with food waste. Then he grabbed gloves with his dirty hands, contaminating the outside of the gloves, then touched the meat. Did you know that cell phones have more bacteria than a toilet seat??? Could have E-coli, MRSA, and streptococcus on it??? When I told the owner that his employee wasn't washing his hands and contaminating food, he basically blew it off and didn't tell the employee. If he is this bad with food safety I can see, what goes on behind the scenes??? I'm not a germaphobe, but have worked in restaurants and for Caterers, and none would have tolerated this!!! Disgusting. They need to have a talk about food safety, or maybe they just don't care if they get people sick. It's a shame, because I have been going there since I was a teen in the 70's. First timer and we had a blast. Nice cold beer, good selection too. We were undecided whether we were going to eat there or not, but when we saw that Giant Roast Beef being sliced our minds were made up.
