We just had dinner here. Seriously perfect experience all around! I am aggrieved that Sweet Basil is so far from our house, since I would come here A LOT. I used to come here about 8 years ago in the old location when I was a grad student. Since moving to Cincinnati I haven't been back due to geography. Tonight we were on a tight schedule to get to Thomas More College for an event but we wanted something very tasty for dinner. I recalled Sweet Basil from my memory archives of delicious places to eat in NKY and suggested we try it again as a family. Literally, my family picked me up from work downtown at 5PM, we got to SB, ordered, ate and paid in ONE HOUR. We got to the restaurant before full-blown dinner hour, and the speedy service and fresh food could not be beat. We were seated immediately, and we asked our excellent server to try to get our food served as quickly as possible. Well, she and the kitchen staff delivered. In no time we were eating piping-hot spring rolls (greasy and delicious) and huge portions of fresh-cooked chicken Pad Thai and Ginger Chicken with Rice. The kiddo and I loved the Pad Thai, it wasn't too dry or too saucy or oily. The sliced velveted chicken breast was very tender and lean and moist - absolutely perfect (because nasty chicken can ruin a whole dish for me, ugh). The prices are very reasonable and the restaurant itself was very clean. I would eat here again in a heartbeat and we would even make a special trip here even though it is a bit of a drive for us. We were in the area and I was craving Thai. We usually go to Mai Thai, but we wanted to try something new since the reviews seemed good for this place. We ordered via take out and the only issue we had was the young receptionist. She was kind of air headed.. lol. I asked her how many servings does a certain dish have and she replied that she didn't understand the question.. I asked if it was a large portion that would feed two people.. still didn't understand and replied "um, yeah I think I don't understand the question"... lol.. I mean, how much more clarification can you make? Anyways we just ordered one order of their pad Thai and hot basil fried rice, the serving size was ok. But we definitely could have ordered more than 1 to feed 2 people and have some left overs for the next day. When we came to pick up the same receptionist rang up my bf and didn't tell us how much but proceeded to take his card and process it, only to realize, oh yeah this is your total. Lol! I mean that's not an issue for me but you probably need someone else to answer the phones for general questions like serving sizes. Lol. Anyways overall the food is really good, very flavorful. The only downside is we asked for the spice level to be a 6 and there was no spice level AT ALL. That was our only disappointment, maybe we'll need to order a spice level 10 next time. Your stirfry dish will come with an abundance of crisp, fresh vegetables, along with your choice of meat and a side of steamed rice. The prices are great, too. This is the real deal! It's hard for me to find good Thai food. I'm really picky and some places serve crappy pad thai. I was out with some friends and was talking about having sushi at Miyako, but he mentioned this place. Not sure when they moved here but they expanded to this bigger location. It's your typical Asian restaurant. Simple decor and spacious. It's cleaner than most (even bathroom was clean) and not dusty/muggy inside. The server seated us right away and gave us waters. We started off with the Philadelphia Salmon Roll as an appetizer. That came out right away and the rice and salmon was fresh. Very good. We decided to order a bunch of meals and share since we were craving both sushi and noodles. Here is what we got: -Tofu Pad See Ew -Chicken Pad Thai -American Idol Roll (Nigiri-Tuna & Salmon, California Roll) -Tofu Side Salad with Peanut Sauce on the Side (for me) -Fried Shrimp Tempura Roll. -Side Ginger salad (my friend ordered that before she got her meal) We got our salads before our meals came out. Some places bring it out at the same time (with your dinner) and I hate that they do not ask. Meals was at our tables within 15 mintues. That was super quick. Everything was delicious! My favorite was the Tofu Pad see Ew. The noodles was not hard and they put enough tofu and vegetables. Chicken Pad Thai (we ordered the spice on the side because one of my friends likes it mild) was so good! Chicken was not tough, noodles not mushy or hard, and a fair amount of cashews. And of course the sushi was excellent! Both noodle meals were hot. Server always checked up on us and was refilling our water right away. We ended up with a to go box because they gave a fair amount of food. Pricing was also reasonable for lunch. Look for lunch and dinner specials on billboard before you walk in or ask. I came here for my lunch break so what I'm about to say is assuming lunch service. Atmosphere: When you park your car and walk in, the first thing you'll notice is the pleasant aroma of their fresh food. This a cozy medium sized restaurant that offer both booth and table seating. You're promptly greeted. The music is a little louder than average. This a clean restaurant lightly decorated. Worn wood paneling soft off-white colors walls. The music is a mix of modern and older songs. Service: My waitress was very prompt. Usually you're looking for quick precise service. This spot hits the mark. She was pleasant but not intrusive and trying to start a conversation. I myself like that for lunch. All in all, my drink never went empty and I couldn't ask for better. Food: Delicious. I ordered classic pad thai and it was delicious and hot from first bite to last. You can choose your level of spiciness from 1-10. They brought me a free miso soup. Very kind of them. Solid Thai restaurant in NKY. We we immediately greeted, seated and given waters. Which was sweet because both of us were STARVING. The restaurant was spacious and actually pretty full for a Monday night at 9. You could tell this is a local favorite. I tried the papaya salad at a spice level 6 (their scale is 1-10) and it was decently spicy! The papaya was firm and it came with tomato and some green beans. I thought it was a little heavy on the sauce, actually a lot, like a pool of residual sauce on the plate which was overwhelming especially near the last couple bites but other than that, very flavorful, and I loved the crushed peanuts to add texture. Highly recommended was the Classic Thai spicy so I tried that with shrimp and loved it! A good portion of decent sized shrimp, and vegetables in a red curry sauce. I recommend this as I did not have leftovers and it really was a serving meant for two...whoops. My had the pad Thai chicken which I was also good, classic pad Thai. I liked this place and will probably be back because 1. Service was excellent, they weren't overly in our faces but they did keep our drinks full. 2. Food came out within 15-20 mins. 3. They care about presentation with their meals--talking carrot shaped roses and orange slice decor on our entrees. 4. They offer something for everybody! There is plenty of parking here at this strip mall, so I was glad to get a space in front of the restaurant. Sweet Basil accepts credit cards, so that's always a great thing. In addition to Thai cuisine, they also feature a sushi bar, which a friend of mine did just that, while myself and the others had ordered Thai food instead. A couple of people ordered pad Thai, whereas I just did something different and had the spicy eggplant dish, which was served with white rice, and summer rolls. I also had a Sam Adams beer as well. They had Pho, but I already had picked up KY for my 50 states Pho challenge. Maybe Thai food is good for marathons? We'll find out! The service here can be not as personal as you may think, but it does serve its purpose. They take your order, serve you, give you a check, and say thank you, at most. I thought that the service was polite and adequate. The spicy eggplant dish was good and the eggplants were breaded. I thought they would have prepared the eggplant a little differently, but that's how it goes. The spiciness of the dish was nice and welcomed. It was delicious and went well with the white rice. Been here quite a few times and each time I have been here the service is always nice, food is always fresh and hot, and it is always clean. My mom and I decided to stop by after the zoo because she has been craving one of their dishes here. It's nice, quaint, and simple. This place is good. My boyfriend and I just moved to this side of the river and quickly noticed that my favorite food choice (Thai) was severely lacking. We FINALLY found Sweet Basil and I am really happy with it. We had the Crab Puffs to start out, and then I ordered the Yellow Curry Chicken and he got the Thai Basil Chicken. Both meals (and appetizer) were damn good. My favorite (and the true tester on whether the restaurant is legit) is their "spicy meter". You can get it 1 through 10 in terms of spicy but when you order it "Thai hot", they give it to you Thai hot (you actually have to order it at 15 if you want it Thai Hot). It is awesome. I haven't tried their sushi yet but this place is for real. Check it out. NOTE: I tried Pad Thai on a subsequent visit, and, while others rave about it, I found it completely lackluster and weak.
