Sweet Bottom Dive Center is located on St. Croix's north shore, at Marriott's Carambola Beach Resort. This is a well run operation, and a PADI 5 Star dive center. Their website says they specialize in small groups and personalized dive experiences from shore or by boat. And that their dive groups are kept small to keep the focus on diver safety and enjoyment. My two tank dive group could not have been smaller, as it was just me and the dive master. I've been here three times, and every time my group was four or less. All of my dives have been shore dives, which I often prefer unless doing a wreck dive. One of the great things about Sweet Bottom, is that their is a very nice reef, just off shore, perhaps 150 yards from the beach. So you can suit up, walk in and get diving fast! Since I'm an advanced diver, I can do deep dives (up to 130 feet), which many of the diver masters like, because they can look for larger fish like barracuda, sharks, etc. And on my first dive, at around 85 feet, we spotted three large reef sharks, which came pretty close, always an awesome site. On a prior visit, I did a dive with Sweet Bottom at the Frederiksted Pier, which is located at the end of the island in Frederiksted. It is considered one of the best micro-dive locations in the world. The pilings are covered in coral, and there is an abundance colorful fish, octopus, seahorses, squid, pufferfish and more. Divers can do a giant-stride off the pier, so it's very easy to dive. The tip of the pier is reportedly 90 feet deep. Sweet Bottom provided all my equipment, except for my mask. Their equipment was newer and in excellent shape. These days, divers would expect integrated BCD's (as opposed to a separate weight belt), and Sweet Bottom did not disappoint, their equipment was newer and in excellent shape. It was possible to recertify for PADI scuba. Sweet Bottom had everything I needed. Experienced DiveMaster Bear put me through the exercises in open water as well as exam and equipment education. This Cane Bay shop is directly across from easy shore entry to a great coral reef where The Wall is located. After proving my techniques we had a pleasure snorkel full of fish, coral and one shark. I was in St. Croix on vacation and walked into the dive shop late in the afternoon looking for a refresher and a dive the next day. Looking at the schedule the manager said "It's pretty booked up but I'll make a few calls and see what I can do." He called me an hour later and said he can fit me in late morning. The next day I met Zack at the shop at Carambola and went over the refresher test and then did some exercises in the pool. After that we did our shore dive. I had a blast on the dive!! I was able to see a reef shark!! I was thoroughly happy with the service Sweet Bottom provided!! As a novice open water diver they not only accomodated my schedule but also provided me with a great experience without any negative attitude. We stayed at the Marriott Carambola and watched divers wade in from the beach and dive the wall. My daughters and I are very new to diving. We attained our PADI open water certs about a month before our trip. I spoke with Hunter at the dive shop. He was informative and even took the time to give us great advice for touring the island. The next day we dove with Brittney. Given my experience level, I was nervous. The dive was terrific. Brittney was great with my daughters. She made the whole dive easy. Overall a fabulous experience. The story here - this couple managing this shop are courteous, knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and living their dream - if you go to work each day saying I don't have a job I have fun and you love what you do; you will do it well and take much more pride and care in having a good safe time- these 2 are the epitome of that statement. They have a wonderful wall right off the beach, many things to see in even 40 feet but if you want you can go farther (apparently some island nut is planning to target over 1500 shortly, but that is no one @ this shop!). Shark, nurse and reef, Turtle, Eel, Rays, and many more reef fish are all within shore range here, while we did see a nurse shark they said it was rare, but what is also common are whale off shore in Feb and March so we missed those. Training options abound, night dives also, my GF is now certified like me and we can continue our underwater adventures anywhere but we will be coming back here even if we don't stay at this same resort. When you come to St. Croix and want to dive - DIVE WITH THIS CREW & THIS SHOP!!! I cannot say enough great things about this shop! The owners are onsite and are active in their business. The staff are all friendly and caring. Everyone welcomes you with open arms and are eager to help no matter what you are coming in for. This shop does basic beginner discovery dives to advanced diving instruction, will also teach snorkeling if you want. They have equipment for sale or rent. This is a full service concierge type shop where you, the diver, do not have to do anything. They really make it an experience worth having. Jeff & Russ were the instructors I went diving with and they both made it a great and enjoyable time. They explained everything every step of the way, are very patient and base everything off the divers comfort level no matter what. Underwater they make sure to keep you in their sights at all times, point out what ever they see that would make it a great experience for the diver (various fish, eels, turtles, ancient anchors, etc). This is a shore entry/exit type dive shop and again they do things so the diver is most comfortable even with trying new things. Price wise - very reasonable. Great dive options at affordable prices! Upon entering the dive shop, everything was clean, neat, and orderly. We got fitted for dive equipment days before our dives. The equipment was clean and in good condition. We did Frederiksted Pier day and night dives with Michael. He was instructive, knowledgeable, and patient. Both dives were fantastic and should be included in must do dives if you have not done these before. Several days later we did a two tank wall dive at Cane Beach. Again, a very positive dive experience with Michael and Carson. I was staying at the Renaissance Hotel and this shop was right on the property and flexible on scheduling. I had never scuba'd before and never really had an interest in it until now. This shop changed everything. The instructors are like a close family and they just take you in and show you the ropes. If you're anything like me, deep ocean water scares you a little. They will take you into a pool and teach you the basics so you're comfortable and won't even charge you until you decide to take the plunge into the ocean. My instructors taught me well and I'm now very comfortable breathing under water. The prices are cheap, they also have military discounts, and they are very flexible on schedule. I can't speak for what they other shops provide or how they treat customers but I have no regrets on learning here. read more

We chose Sweet Bottom because they supported dives at different locations on the island. They have terrific new equipment and are very experienced and professional. They team up with another outfit, SCUBA, who owns the boats. Between the two their operation runs like a well oiled machine. Captain Cory tried hard to honor our request for the shallow wreck dive but the current wasn't cooperating. We had an amazing dive at Tide Bottle and Swirling Reef of Death. A 5' green moray eel gave us quite the show. We dove the East Wall of Salt River Canyon then the Love Shack. We had an unbelievable shark encounter that was unforgettable. At one point 4 harmless reef sharks were circling our group, so cool! We did the day/night dive at the famous Frederiksted Pier and saw eels and 3 octopi and so much more! I have been diving since 2009, in multiple countries, water types, with countless dive shops, and I have to say this is by far favorite one! The topography was outstanding, sea life vivacious, Laura and her husband are wonderful to work with, and great prices! I did the same dive several times here, sounds boring? WRONG! I had the pleasure of diving with a different guide each time and each was a new experience/lesson Russ: Respect- Russ allowed me to use my certification to its fullest extent. He was watchful but often reminded us how he respected our levels and experience, not to mention stressed the importance of listening to one's body(another lesson in respect). Tracy: Perspective- Tracy was all about the bigger picture and the importance of looking all around, which came in handy when we were swimming with 4 large reef sharks. I had problems with my air consumption on my 2nd drive, no need to fear Tracy extra air here! It was my first time ever running low in my life and no amount of experience can prepare you for that moment, I've seen divers panic, but not Tracy! I was embrassed but she simply reminded me, it's all about perspective! Jackie- Patience- GOD BLESS THIS WOMAN! Guys, this saint of a lady taught my husband who can hardly dog paddle and sinks like the titanic, how to dive! Sweet Bottom is one of the best-organized and best-staffed organizations I've worked with in 14 years of diving. They have all the equipment you'd need in all sizes, plus a nice retail shop, clean bathrooms, and warm water showers for after your dive. They don't have a boat, but they're right at the Cane Bay Wall in St. Croix, so you suit up and walk in. Same with the famous Fredericksted pier. One giant stride off the dock, and you're ready for one of the top-rated night dives in the Caribbean - even better during the day, for me, since our supplied flashlights were a little too dim (bring your own if you have one). Dive master Michael worked with us to renew our skills after a few years off from diving. He was really helpful about making sure we were safe and understood the procedures. Do be aware the shore dives take a higher level of physical fitness than a boat dive since you need to be able to surface swim on your back to the point where you start the descent. At the pier, this wasn't very far - maybe 75 yards. At the wall, I think it was a little less than half a mile - about a 15-20 minute swim. On both dives, they hope you can exit and walk back to the start point wearing your BCD and tank. If you are unable to do that, they'll help you, which I needed and very much appreciated. read more

My husband an I went to this dive center to complete our open water dives for certification. The staff were all very welcoming and encouraging. Our dive instructed was Mike Ryan who was super supportive, patient and kind. The water was somewhat choppy and I got sea sick on our first dive. Mike was so sympathetic and went out of his way make sure I was ok. When we finally got to the last dive, it was great and thanks to Mike, we saw so many amazing species I don't think we would have seen if he didn't point them out.
