Saying that using a clean scoop or an unopened tub "would not make a product safer" is very troubling for families with celiac disease. Those steps may not eliminate all risk in a shared environment, but they absolutely can reduce one obvious source of gluten cross-contact: shared scoops and front tubs that may have been touched by cones, cookies, brownies, or other gluten-containing items. We were not asking Kilwins to guarantee that anything was gluten-free or allergen-free. We understand there is still risk in a shared environment. We were asking for basic cross-contact precautions so we could make an informed decision. What is disappointing is that Kilwins' policy appears to remove that choice entirely by refusing to take any special handling steps, even when a family clearly understands the remaining risk. For a child with celiac disease, being told that the store will not even use a clean scoop or unopened tub is not "keeping customers safe" -- it means the customer is effectively excluded from being able to participate. I appreciate that your intent may be to avoid misleading people, but the better approach would be to say: "We cannot guarantee no cross-contact, but we can use a clean scoop and unopened tub upon request."
