Sweet Culture 架勢堂 is a popular traditional Chinese dessert shop. The space hasn't changed in years, and it's so wonderfully nostalgic. They've always been consistent and is the perfect place to have some childhood fave Cantonese desserts, popular snacks and street foods. Always packed here, so be patient!

This place is my go to for Chinese desserts when I'm craving sweets and it is too cold outside for bingsu. We tried the mango pancake which was very good but small size. The cream was cold enough it was almost like ice cream. 4/5 The mango sago was decent but who can go wrong making mango sago. Unfortunately the mango was sour which threw the whole dessert off. 3/5 Their egg custard is delicious! Best one I've had. 5/5 Would come again. Definitely not crowded when we went and usually people come for takeout so dine in is almost always empty. The staff are nice service was good as well.

Sweet Culture offers a variety of traditional Chinese desserts. For example, they have desserts like Coconut Milk with Egg White and Ginger Milk Pudding, among others. This time, I tried their Coconut Milk with Egg White, and it turned out to be even more delicious than I expected. It wasn't overly watery but had a rich milk flavor. However, their other desserts weren't particularly exceptional. If you visit again, I highly recommend trying their Ginger Milk Pudding or any of their steamed egg-based desserts, as they should be quite good.

Had a craving for Chinese desserts and came across this place at New Kennedy Square. They have a large variety of Chinese desserts however I was craving steamed milk but they did not have it. The restaurant had ample seating to be distanced from other parties. Ended up ordering hot coconut purple rice dessert, hot black sesame dessert and tea egg in hot tea. The purple rice dessert was my favourite of the three; the purple rice tasted similar to other stores however the combination of the purple rice and coconut milk resulted in a smooth overall texture which also wasn't too sweet. I felt the black sesame dessert didn't have as strong of a black sesame flavour as other Chinese dessert stores however the texture was very smooth. The tea egg in hot tea was interesting as well, the egg looks like it's been marinated like a soy sauce marinated egg and it tasted similar to a normal boiled egg, with a subtle tea flavour. When I mixed the egg with the hot tea, the sweetness of the tea adds another layer of flavour to the tea egg.

Ate here today for dessert with my family to try this place out for the first time while visiting Toronto. We all had different kinds of desserts to eat and enjoy together as a family. I got the mango dessert and it's super good and sweet. The service was also was attentive and great that we couldn't agree more. Finally, I would definitely eat and again maybe in the future when I visit Canada someday maybe in the future! :)

    Mango sago and papaya slush

We had a craving for Asian desserts after shopping nearby, and a quick Yelp search brought us to Sweet Culture which was just opening for the evening. We arrived to an empty store front as the one person working was prepping in the back kitchen. A quick hello to the back caught their attention a we seated ourselves with a paper menu. We picked the almond paste, sesame paste, mango sago and a papaya slush. Since there was only one person, she was working the online orders, making the items, cashing out takeout and basically running the store single handedly. Despite the severe personnel shortage, we got our desserts quite quickly and we enjoyed it in relative peace. My papaya slush was freshly made with real papaya, so it was not overly artificially sweet and was refreshing on a hot day. My table mates enjoyed their respective desserts and had no complaints either. Will be back to try something else! I feel like the vibe would be a lot better later at night, as these places are meant to be late night-after dinner establishments.

A Markham go-to if you just want your late-night fix without IG bull. Everything is more than reasonably priced at this mom-and-pop shop. This place is definitely worth the stop. Our order: Diced Papaya Sago, Fried Milk and Sesame Glutinous Balls

Following another recent Yelp review, we tried Sweet Culture. Amazingly it was our first time even though this place has been here for some time. We tried the stewed papaya with white fungus and almond ($7.25). As well, the black sesame paste dessert ($5.00). Both were pretty good and very (temperature) hot. There's plenty of parking and at 6:30pm, there was no lineup to order. Will try the steamed milk and red bean next time. With such a large menu and variety of dessert options, there'll be many 'next time's

Crossing another traditional Asian dessert place off my list! We came on a Saturday evening and lots of tables available. We were given a menu and pencil to mark on, the menu of course didn't have any pictures so I can imagine it hard for those not familiar with Asian desserts to order or get a sense of the items. I ended up getting the durian and sago mix while my partner got the almond paste with sesame balls as the optional extra. There seems to be only one lady at the front making all of the desserts so we did wait for a bit to get ours. I would say that the durian sago mix is good for the price and super refreshing. One thing I wish they could change is to have some actual durian chunks in there instead of blending everything up, it made the durian kind of diluted. Either way, still a good dessert. My partner really enjoyed his, the almond paste was not too sweet and the sesame balls hit the nostalgic factor and he was thoroughly satisfied. We'll be back to try the other dishes when we're in the area again. Note: Like most traditional dessert places, this place is cash only!

Curry fish ball and sweet crispy milk

Sweet Culture, sweet nostalgia. As someone else mentioned in their review, Sweet Culture is one of the oldest dessert places in Markham for traditional Chinese sweets. My parents used to take us here after dinner for some sweets and snacks and now I get their stuff to-go as an independent adult. How times have changed, but certain things on their menu haven't. The staples that we have gotten over the last decade or so are as tasty as ever. Each of my family members still have their favourites, unchanged to this day. My mom's beloved sesame dumplings are nice and chewy, with flavourful sesame and sugar mixed onto it. My dad's herbal jelly is strong as ever. Bitterness equals health after all, when it comes to medicinal foods. The sweet crispy milk has always been incredibly unique, not seen much in other places and certainly not as deliciously made as they are at Sweet Culture. As for snacks, the curry fish-ball and siu mai have always been a nice savoury option. I've always loved this place. Understandably, nostalgia might give me rose-coloured glasses but I think I'm objective enough to know when some things are good and some things aren't. For example, their fresh fruit sago options were never a favourite of mine. I gave it a try again recently and the sago was in clumps and the fruit, while fresh, wasn't very flavourful. If you're a sago fan, go for the mango and pomelo with tapioca cream (杨枝甘露) instead. Deliciously citrusy and creamy. There's something old school to Sweet Culture that makes it very endearing. It's casual, it plays Cantonese shows on the TVs, and they serve up very traditional Chinese snacks. It will always have a place in my heart and I will always get my sweet crispy milk from them.

This is a good choice for Hong Kong style desserts. Mango grass jelly was great. Grass jelly was firm and had a good flavour. It was pretty smooth (though it's not the slippery silky type). Crispy milk was good. Crispy on the outside but really soft inside and with a very light taste. It's basically deep fried congealed milk. Almond paste with rice balls was smooth & rich. You can't taste the powder. The rice balls are excellent - soft, with a lot of black sesame paste. The stuffing tastes good but is coarse ground.

Traditional Asian dessert spot that's open late. Has lots of seats and the prices are decent but dessert is just ok. I got the grass jelly with watermelon and my friend got the steamed egg with milk and ginger. The grass jelly was not that soft and tasted like the canned grass jelly you get from grocery stores. The steamed egg was lumpy and not as silky as it should be. Heads up this is a cash only establishment.

    Tong yuan
    Tina A.

Might be the best black sesame tong yuan I've had! The texture and flavor are perfect, we even came back for more the next day. They make them by scratch and it's the owner's recipe. AND it's peanut powder free for my fellow allergy sufferers. The fried milk is also good here, but different than the one I love from Keung's Delight. I would say the one at Keung's has a slight coconut flavor to it and the outside is panko, whereas the outside here is tempura and the texture is smoother. The black sesame soup and sweet glutinous rice soup were ok to me.

I wanted to try Peking Duck and got clued into J&Y as one of the best options to try which did not disappoint. The Peking Duck was so tender, so flavorful and so wonderfully succulent. It was perfectly prepared and sliced with the fat rendered and thinly sliced. The wraps were not the monstrous steamed buns but traditional translucent wraps which are super thin, soft and pliable. Scallions, cucumber, hoisin sauce completed each wrap which highlighted the duck. Definitely the best traditional Peking Duck preparation I've had in a very very long time. The remains of the duck were used for make a duck fried rice and duck soup, again both were amazing. It takes a certain skill to make fried rice cleanly without an excessive oily coating on each grain of rice. This was one of the best fried rices I've ever had! I was hoping to find something special on the menu. The Peking duck caught my eye at around $70, but then I discovered that almost everything else was extra--lettuce wraps, stir-fried duck meat, fried rice, and soup. By the time you add the extras, the bill is easily another $50 or more, bringing the total to well over $120. We decided to pass, and judging from the dishes we did order, that was probably the right decision. The hot and sour soup had plenty of heat and tang but lacked depth of flavor and was under-seasoned for my taste. Fortunately, we only ordered a small bowl. The deep-fried tofu was bland and forgettable. The stir-fried shrimp was acceptable but nothing special. The biggest disappointment was the sweet and sour pork. I specifically asked the server to make sure the pork was crispy, but it arrived soft and lumpy rather than light and crunchy. Even the complimentary red bean dessert soup was watery and lacked flavor. Our bill came to about $104 for two people. For the quality of the food, I didn't feel it offered good value. Sadly, after several disappointing visits, I don't think we'll be returning.

I had my food in my insulated bag, so the sauce leaked into the Fantuan bag and my insulated bag. Luckily, my car was fine. As a result, my rating is four stars. I wanted to try a new eatery. I looked at my Fantuan app and noticed He Bei Chinese Cuisine. It had dumplings and snacks that I enjoy, so I said yes to placing a dinner order from this eatery. I ordered these items: - Pork and chive steamed dumplings (large has 14 dumplings) - Tea eggs - Shredded potato salad On Fantuan, when you purchase $15 worth of food, you get the shredded potato salad for a cent. Deal! After placing my order near my home, I drove over to this eatery. The drive was ten minutes. I was given an estimated time of fifteen minutes. It was ready in ten minutes. I had no problem finding this eatery. There was plenty of parking. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I saw the Yubu sign. My heart sank, as I loved the Korean tofu pockets from this joint. She said thanks right back. I put my food in my insulated bag. With the leak, I managed to launder the Fantuan bag and clean my insulated bag. After I cleaned up, I had dinner at home. The food was amazing and filling! I loved the shredded potato salad. Sure, a lot of the sesame-soy sauce was gone. However, it tasted yummy. It was worth the cent! The steamed pork and chive dumplings were so good. I didn't dunk them in soy sauce. The filling had so much moisture that I felt like I was eating soup dumplings. The filling had yummy flavour and the dumplings were steamed to perfection. Excellent! You can buy frozen dumplings from this place. I'll need to do it. The tea eggs were the perfect snack while streaming hockey games. I peeled the shells off both of them. The eggs were cracked to allow the amazing soy-based sauce to marinate and get into the eggs. I don't think they added much MSG or at least used good quality ones, as we did not feel overly thirsty later in the evening. They give free daily soup and dessert. What we were most impressive was with the service. The waiters were very attentive, changing our plates twice during our 1ish hour meal. The also gave us wet wipes and more napkins without us requesting it. They even offered us additional soup, which we declined as we were quite full.

But I gave it 4 stars because of the experience yesterday. The food was substandard on this visit. I ordered 1. Jumbo seafood congee (taste was bland) 2. Grouper and tofu hot pot (best of all 4) 3. Black bean and beef Hofun (seriously lacking in quality) 4. Chinese dough fritters (awesome as always) I would say I was 50% satisfied with the meal. But I will be back as I said this place hardly disappoints and Even with this experience it's still an easy recommendation to come here I hope next time the quality is up to their old 30 year standards.

The restaurant was surrounded in tanks full of lobster, crab, seafood and then a ton of dry aged steaks. Definitely something you don't see in California. Clean and spacious. Service was what you would expect from a Chinese seafood restaurant. Overall the meal was good, for me and a few others at the table the star of the show was actually the fish. The lobster while impressive when they brought it out was not as flavorful as one would have expected. And same with the king crab legs - my favorite have been the ones I've had in SF. Was interesting to come and experience it but I wouldn't come back. I prefer quality food over an IG-moment.

The establishment is famous for its iconic, towering mountains of deep-fried Hong Kong-style lobster and giant Alaskan king crabs.Without a doubt, the food is exceptional. The seafood is extraordinarily fresh--pulled straight from massive surrounding glass tanks--and prepared to absolute perfection with their signature Maggi sauce and garlic toppings. However, the major downside here is the notoriously slow and chaotic service. Due to the massive crowds, servers can be hard to flag down, orders take a long time to arrive, and the staff often feels rushed or inattentive. Despite the frustrating wait times and subpar service, the spectacular flavors and theatrical presentation make it a worthwhile destination for patient seafood lovers.Watch the massive lobster towers being prepared and served fresh at this iconic spot

The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.
