"The Paradox of Choice - Why More Is Less" is a 2004 book by Barry Schwartz. In the book, Schwartz argues that eliminating consumer choices can greatly reduce anxiety for shoppers. Simply put, too many choices increases the amount of time and effort it takes to settle on something. I'm intimately familiar with this premise, and can testify to it's veracity- every time I'm in Sweet Dreams, I'm paralyzed by the choices I face. Do I gorge on the extremely deep dish Apple Pie? Maybe indulge in the Bavarian cream inside the Venetian Delight? Or do I satisfy my chocohound/alcoholic leanings and get the Chocolate Banana Baileys? Luckily, Sweet Dreams offers mini-cakes, bite sizes, and slices. One of the girls at the counter remembers me from the first time I stopped in there in 2003, when I ordered every single flavor option they had in mini versions. Screw you, choices! With prices on mini-cakes and slices running between $3.50 and $4.95 and bite sizes at about $0.88, it's easy to afford the luxury of simply choosing EVERYTHING. Sweet Dreams is a CLASSIC cake shop, too: no cutesy, pop-art hip cakes or pastries. This is straight up conformist, I-went-to-cake-school cake making and decorating. Even their kids-themed cakes feel very "adult", not even slightly hip. Bravo on knowing what's important- taste over style any day. A few complaints: -My biggest beef with this place is that a lot of times their mini-cakes aren't super fresh, and after a few days of sitting in the display case chiffon cake is way too dry for my liking (and reminiscent of everything I hate about Astoria). But when you get it fresh? Wowza. -Cake batter is limited to vanilla or chocolate chiffon. -No cassata cake (the king of cakes!) -Last time I checked a tray of bite sizes is more expensive than buying them individually. I was the lucky recipient of a delicious cake given to me by coworkers. It was a cheesecake with brownie crust, topped with chocolate ganache and ornate chocolate decorations. The cheesecake was creamy and the chocolate parts were rich and sure to satisfy any woman with a chocolate craving. I thought this would be a perfect place to pick up some cheesecake (my husband's favorite!) for his birthday. Boy, I'm so glad I stopped! They have a large selection of whole cakes in various sizes, including cheesecakes and other types of cakes. But they also have a wide variety of bite-sized pastries. We didn't need another whole cheesecake again, so I opted for a couple small pieces of cheesecake, red velvet cake, and cannoli. He was so happy! They were each so delicious! We dad a Beautiful family wedding and ordered a tree filled with strawberries and one filled with cream puffs ( family favorite). We were told to remove them we only had to turn and pull. Well folks that DID NOT work. So the tree was left with half the cream puffs and broken strawberries. Sweet dreams was not very helpful. I WILL NOT recommend them to anyone. ( many people asked). . If the staff would of not been so rude and actually tried to help, I would taken that into consideration with the review. Good idea with the product but you had better know how to execute. read more

Didn't even realize this was a bakery when I visited. We thought it was a cake decorating supply place. Seriously we did. It has the ugliest facade in a strip mall and is located next to an ACO Hardware. It's also huge. If you're like me, you'll be stunned when you walk through the door. There's elegance to the place and nice tables to sit and eat. When we were there, only one of the tables was open. Apparently a lot of people know about this place. Where have I been? Here is an awesome bakery putting out yummy fancy cakes, cookies and pastries some with an eastern European flair. Don't miss the really cool cake display in the back. Work your way along the windows and go through the door into what looks like a warehouse and WOW, you'll find yourself surrounded by 100 of the most amazing "cakes". Some of them tower 15 feet high. I'm soo happy to have found this place! Let me tell you, I called multiple bakeries closer to home and nobody would respond back or seemed interested in making my cake. Not here! They always respond quickly, were pleasant and helpful, and made my cake look exactly how I asked! Oh, and it was delicious too! Everyone kept complimenting how good it tasted, and my one year old who has never fed himself wouldn't stop eating his smash cake so I think that speaks for itself! I call my son nugget because he's small, but of great value. I have been going to this bakery for years now, however more recently I'll stop in on my way to work to pick up a few desserts. First, it was the cannolis that were old. I just blew that off as "whatever, no big deal". I went a couple more times and I had no problem really, just my desserts tasting like refrigerator. The last straw was, I was bragging to my coworkers how amazing their fruit cheesecake squares are. I go and buy 3 at 5.00 each, give 2 away and I kept one for myself. OMJ absolutely horrible, it was super old, the graham cracker crust was stale, the fruit had that tangy old taste, the cheesecake tasted like it was sitting for a week. I was so upset and couldn't believe they actually sold something like that. Let the young ladies tell it, they make the desserts fresh everyday, which is not accurate. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this bakery. I gave it 2 stars because there is one worker that is bomb, her customer service is amazing. She wears glasses and her nails are always dope!!! I am not typically a sweets person, but I do love me some cake. They make fantastic but expensive cakes here, a lot of them with fresh fruit, which I just love for some reason (I think a lot of people get grossed out by that). My favorite cake is the Venetian Delight with Bavarian cream. Oh, my! The buttercreams are sinful, and the cake is nice and moist. I've ordered a few birthday cakes from here before and have not been disappointed with the flavor. My wallet is not so appreciative. read more

Grew up in Macomb County and always loved their cake. Moved to Chicago and had to order online since I threw a baby shower in MI. Called ahead to make sure they could make the cake since I ordered a week before the shower. The 2 gals I spoke with on the phone were wonderful. I had some modifications on the cake and they made sure to make it happen. I ordered cake #W572 on the website. Pickup was seamless, was packaged very well, and the cake was BEAUTIFUL!! The appearance and taste of the cake was huge for me. I HATE fondant, but when I called and asked me buttercream, the gal advised that the details on the cake would suffer, so we went with fondant. The cake was hard to cut, so we cut the cake in large segments, easily peeled off the fondant and enjoyed the decadent Venetian Delight cake. The guests raved that the cake was amazing. The slices were a bit messy but no one cared. IT'S CAKE!! :) It was FRESH, light, superb. The mommy to be ate about 1/4 of the cake. :) Super happy!! Great job Sweet Dreams!! read more

This is the widest barley I have ever been to, they messed up my girlfriends cake on her birthday it was a disaster. I went there and explained to them what I wanted on my cake they still messed it up by putting too much cream and it costed me a 110 dollars for a cake that we could eat. I had to through it in the trash. For Valentine's Day I ordered a 6in and they gave me a 3in and charged me for the 6in cake. The service from the manger and cashier was garbage, they gave me an attitude for wanting the right size and I always spend money, NEVER AGAIN. So I asked for a very simple cake for my wedding and they delivered a cake that was not even the cake I designed for the wedding. Was covered in fondant which I said no fondant had no ribbons which were asked and was not even filled with the moose's like was paid. To top it all off the cake had layers of gross dry cake instead of small layers of actual cake cause I hate cake period. They did a terrible job and can be blamed to ruin your wedding day. We got our wedding cake from Sweet Dreams and it was such a great experience! From the moment I walked in, they were so nice and attentive and made sure I got exactly what I wanted. First the good... The cakes are delicious! Absolutely to die for great tasting! What was very frustrating is they were very unaccommodating with the cake I wanted. I wanted what is a standard cake for them that they generally have on hand. With six weeks advanced notice I asked them to make the exact same cake without the white chocolate shavings. Was told they could not do that and that I would have to choose a custom cake from online and further customize it. There custom cakes to choose from did not have anything like the standard one I wanted. In the end cake did not look at all like I wanted but it was pretty and delicious. I wish I had the options to give 0 stars for this place. I called and ordered for my son's birthday cake with Amanda. Let me tell you that she is the worst employee ever to order with. I ordered cake and 12 cupcakes. I go to the bakery to pick up my son's cake and I am assuming i'm also going to get the cupcakes. The girl at the register she comes to me and tells me that there is no cupcakes on this order and only a cake. I told her NO ordered cupcakes as well with the cake. I asked who Amanda was and the other girl she pointed at her and I'm waiting for Amanda to come and approach me and tell me what happened to my cupcakes but instead she leaves the bakery without even apologizing or explaining to me what happened. Rude and disrespectful , if you messed up In the order ok I get it, ppl make mistakes but if you did mess up at least stop and talk to the customer, not just leave when you know it's you that messed up the order. 1 star, that's all this place deserves is one star. I went in for a cake sampling and to get a quote, the cake was wonderful! One of the best tasting cakes I actually have ever had. So I ask for a quote on a wedding cake, Lindsey was my consultant, she was such a sweetheart, she went over my ideas and design and emailed me a formal quote, she told me that there was no need to place a deposit right away because my wedding was so far out. I said ok great I will definitely be back. - fast forward many months later and I call up sweet dreams to place the order for the wedding cake and they tell me Lindsey no longer works there and that they will not honor the quote I was given, I try to reason with them even willing to pay a little bit more but they want to charge $200 more?! Then the owner gets on the phone who is extremely rude and tells me "what do you want me to do about it" seriously? I want you to honor your prices & word. Where to start, we were looking for a cake for our small wedding, went in there for a tasting and quote, the tasting was amazing and the quote was decent, so after checking several other places we ordered there. When the wedding day came the cake looked amazing but that is where the good ended, the filling was supposed to be lemon, there was no lemon flavor, and there was barely and of it, the vanilla cake was dry and the frosting was so thick you could not eat it, and almost all the cake was thrown away! I called and spoke with a manager who was very apologetic and said I would get a full store credit, this was my wedding cake after all, but I have not received the e-mail for the credit and doubt I will. I ordered 24 cupcake from Sweet Dreams. Which was $50, which was fine considering I wanted quality cup cakes. I ordered half pink and half black. During the party when I passed them out to people everyone took one bite and spit them out. They tasted like rust. I called the next day about my frustrations and talked to the owner. He told me the cup cakes didn't taste good because of the colors I requested, I stated that it should have been shared with me during the ordering process that they wouldn't have tasted good because I wouldn't have ordered that color. I told him that I would bring him back the cupcakes and show him no one ate them and I wanted a refund. He laughed and told me that he didn't care if I came back to his business over $50. I then told him I would report him to the BBB and he said "I don't even have a tax Id for this business so please do and while you're at it don't forget Facebook, Twitter, Yelp and LinkedIn" So here I am, there are other small businesses you can spend your money at!
