They kindly switched out for salads which were delicious. My mother ordered an open roast beef with au jus and out came it a lathered in that weird Orangish gravy. Did not eat but did not send back already had sent back the soup. Couldn't do that twice. I would definitely call ahead of time to reserve if you have a large group. They offer basic fresh diner food. The staff especially our waitress was fantastic and service ran so smoothly without missing a beat. Most of us ordered their burgers, wraps, grilled sandwiches, salads, couple of other dinners, plus alcoholic drinks. First time. Friends live in Melville and took us here for an early dinner on a Thursday night. We don't usually do dinner in diners, but it turned out much better than expected. The table for four was smaller than in most of the diners we go to, but we managed. Service was good, place was very clean ... even the oil and red wine vinegar carafes were clean and dry, and the food was excellent. I ordered their "Grilled Vegetable Salad," which included grilled zucchini , eggplant , corn, avocado, and sun-dried tomatoes, over romaine lettuce. The ladies (of course) both ordered salmon and salad and my buddy had the chicken stuffed with spinach with sides of potatoes and broccoli, but it was a lot, so he took home half of it. It was my first time here meeting up with a friend, and I thought it was really good. Was great food was good. They had a nice selection of to eat. I passed by twice. Once because I didn't know where it was, and the other time I couldn't find the entrance to the parking lot. Luckily there are two different ways to get into the parking lot so I don't have to turn around to go toone entrance for it. There is an entrance on both sides of the parking lot, so there is a bus to that. The parking lot is small. I really liked how the interior is. It has an updated modern field to it, and it didn't feel like it was set back a few decades ago. Everything was very sleek and fresh. I really like that. Our waiter was really good. I don't think I caught his name, but everything came out pretty quickly. It was decently busy, being where it was located. My friend got egg whites well done and French toast. Lets face it.... Sweet Hollow is a diner. What tends to seperate them is staff, quality of foods and comfortable setting. (much like any other restaurant.) I came here for a meeting with friends. This is a nice size spacious diner with plenty of natural light. Sat down at a booth for quite some time until we ordered. Our lovely waitress just kept pouring the coffee until we ordered. My French Toast was perfect. There was a slight crunch with a soft tasty inside. We still sat for a while until paying check and leaving. All our time there was pleasant. Perfect. However, for two days in a row they seem to forget that I'm here after I get seated! Maybe it's because I'm by myself? We got take out breakfast the other day. To save time, we called it in from the road. The man who was taking the order was pleasant enough, but could not understand basic English...even after 6 attempts to speak very slowly, clear and simply, He could not comprehend that we wanted THEM to put the butter and syrup on the pancakes and French Toast, so we didn't not have to make a mess in the car. In particular, their Turkey Club is delicious and the potato salad it comes with was the best I have ever tasted. To top off the visits, the waiter Brian is exceptional in every way. Sweet Hollow on Rt 110 in Melville has been there for as long as I can remember. This past Friday morning, my wife and I stopped in for breakfast. Since I was last here about 7 years ago, the place has been totally remodeled. It's fine, but I always prefer the look of old school diners. The menu was not as large as some diners, but the breakfast food we ordered was fine. Parking is easy, prices average, service friendly enough. I'm on a diner tour, this is the third diner I've visited in the past few weeks. Back in the day I used to work in the Melville and this was the local diner for the area. I haven't been here in over 20 years, my brother in law used to work across the street and made the suggestion for breakfast. Walking inside, the entire interior has been replaced. What was once a diner feel now like the waiting room of a dentist office. Man.. they laid the formica down thick! The booths, the cashiers area, tables, everything formica for the eye to see. Does it make the food better? No, but when I go to any diner on Long Island I want to diner to look and feel like a diner and not grandpas finished basement with a new kitchen. What I noticed on the menu was the lack of variety regarding egg specials. I appreciated the fact they have turkey bacon as a choice, I had two eggs over easy with toast and turkey bacon. Good, standard diner food and our waitress was spot on. How about a southwest omelet covered in salsa verde? Maybe I'm reaching, Sweet Hollow Diner has been here for a long time. We typically go to another diner in town but decided to try Sweet Hollow. I'm glad we did. It's been newly renovated and the appearance is modern and very clean. The menu is large and it will take awhile to peruse through it. We had the following: Turkey Club, Greek Salad and Italian Panini. The Turkey Club had "real turkey", not that pressed fake stuff. It included bacon, lettuce and tomato with fries. I was told it was "very good." The panini was delicious and also served with fries. The chicken was marinated and grilled to perfection and the mushrooms, mozzarella and roasted red peppers were a good match with it. The Greek salad was very good. The feta was fresh and it was a sizable portion. The Greek dressing was very tasty. We were warned about the temperature in there so we were prepared. Good thing we did. It was very cold, making it borderline uncomfortable. The staff had a bit of a tiff in the middle of the restaurant, which was not appropriate. However, despite the tiff and cold temperature, we will be back for the food and modernized, clean environment. Don't forget to bring a sweater! read more

This review is only about one person, the older waitress with the short hair and glasses. Be warned! I was there for lunch with my family, we are bi-racial. My wife took our two children into the bathroom and this waitress hit my daughter in the head with the door. She slammed into it with two hands to make if fly open, even though as someone who works there she should know the paper towel dispenser is right by the door. She did not apologize, she actually said that my children "do not belong here"? What does that mean? I just had a large lunch including appetizers, soups and main courses but my children "do not belong"? She continued that my children should not be there? Sorry, do I need her permission to eat in the diner? It is not even her diner, she is an employee. She struck a 6 year old child in the head with a door and tried to justify it. Not your typical diner experience where you get good food and leave happy. Too many things went wrong here... first off my glass was chipped thank goodness I drank out of a straw. I can understand the oversight if it was busy but I was the only one in there. Also it was $3.55 for a cup of apple juice?!? Wow. What are they squeezing apple juice out back? That is insanity! I ordered the corned beef hash with eggs. The hash had minimal flavor and was not appetizing at all. It needed more flavor maybe some salt and pepper. Eggs are eggs so they werent messed up. Absolutely phenomenal experience, the service, the food, the style. I ordered the deluxe fried chicken sandwich with curly fries for only $15. The chicken was plentiful, crispy and delicious, the fries are some of the best I think I've ever had in my life and while I was walking out completely stuffed my mouth was watering looking at the other plates on the tables. Our waiter was great and took care of us perfectly, she had no problem splitting the check at the end for us and she received 2 tips from us for such excellent service. The diner itself looks very nice and featured a picture of a Sherman firefly on the bar which my friend and I enjoyed. The waitress never came back to check if I needed anything. I was there for 40 minutes. A refill of water and coffee would have made it a 5 star experience. My family has been going to Sweet Hollow Diner for years, and without a doubt, it is the definition of a New York Diner. I've missed these types of places since I live in California now, but the sit down, basic menu, refill coffee, and simple foods are good enough for me. I had the Eggs Benedict this morning, which came out super fast, and was brought to me by a waitress who was friendly, full of personality, and on the fly! The food was good and satisfying. Obviously, your at a diner, nothing here will be spectacular and knock your socks off, but it did the trick and filled me up. People on Yelp need to understand that when you go to these places, the 5 stars speak to the caliber of service, environment, food, etc. For a diner, quick and on the go, it reaches those goals and gets you in and out as quickly as you'd like.
