I was there 7/28/26 in the afternoon. I took my 97 y.o. Mother out for coffee & muffin. We walked in at 3:20- ALL food was packed up - NOTHING in the display case. When i asked what was available the attendant begrudgingly offered 3 muffin types that were left. We requested one & coffee. When we sat to eat & have conversation this same woman started banging and vacuuming under our feet. It was clear she didn't want us there. The one other customer there concurred and offered her horrendous customer service experience with this woman. What i was hoping would be a relaxing experience resulted in my forcing my mother to hurry up and finish so we could leave. Both myself and the other customer vowed NEVER to return!! I'm writing in the hopes the owner reads this. Whoever was working there yesterday is toxic for your lovely business!!! read more

This was my first visit to Sweet Java. I am not from the area and wish there was one closer to me! The facility was very clean with tons of parking and great service. There was both indoor and outdoor seating. This is a perfect spot to work remote or study for the day. The cafe vibe was upbeat but relaxing. If you are a frequent customer they also have a loyalty rewards program you can sign up for. I got the small iced lavender vanilla latte and it was smooth and lightly sweetened. I was disappointed today when I went into my favorite cafe for my favorite power bowl. It' It's sad when a thriving business in a small town changes owners and the new owners instantly increase prices and take away customer perks!! The service there is always great. The previous owner was also AMAZING! However, not only did the power bowl go from 12.79 to 15.79, but it also DECREASED in size!!! The perks were a great bonus and now there are none for customers. I can't go to a place that does not focus on customer service. I suggest that if you are going to increase prices, DO NOT take away customer perks as well. Time to find another place for power bowls under $15!!!!! read more

I found Sweet Java through the Fivestars app, a rewards app that gives you discounts and allows you to collect points to redeem for free stuff at local businesses. I don't think I would have found it otherwise because it's in south Salem off 1A towards Swampscott, which is a party of the city I don't frequent. The shop itself is super cute with dog and cow paintings on the wall. They're currently closed for indoor seating, which makes sense given the small space. Their website says they're offering online ordering and curbside pickup in addition to takeout. I hope one day I'll be able to sit here and enjoy some coffee and food. They have a lot of food and drink options on the menu, including bubble tea, smoothies, and ice cream. For my first visit I was able to get a free muffin, which is what prompted me to visit in the first place, besides my love for visiting local coffee shops. They had a lot of options which made it was hard to decide, so I asked the barista for her opinion. She said her favorite is the cappuccino cinnamon muffin, so I chose that. It was yummy, not too sweet. I definitely want to try the other muffins. For coffee, I got an iced caramel macchiato latte with oat milk. I also enjoyed this a lot as well since there were a nice balance between the flavors of the espresso and the caramel. Service was fantastic and you can enter your phone number at checkout for the rewards even if you don't have the app. I look forward to visiting again soon. read more

I've been to this cafe a couple of times. My most recent visit was awful. I'm pregnant, after trying for so many years to finally have our first child so I'm pretty nervous in general. The cafe uses Silk almond milk. I just found out it was recalled due to listeria in Canada. Just to ease my mind, I asked if I could read the UPC barcode just to rule out it was not a recalled item. God forbid after all of our struggles I get listeria which can kill an unborn child. The older woman, who i fear is the owner, was so incredibly rude about it. I explained I was pregnant and there was a recall due to listeria. She asked me to read the code to her and with a lot of attitude said it was not the code. There was a very kind younger girl working who asked if I wanted to read for myself, which of course I said yes. Thankfully it was not one of the recalled codes and my mind was more at east to have my smoothie that I was craving. Prior to this, I ordered a second smoothie for my mom. She gets upset stomach with peanuts so I requested no peanut butter for hers. The older woman had a lot of attitude and told me the smoothie would not hold together. I worked at Jamba Juice throughout college, I know for sure there would be no issues, not even sure why there was push back on peanut butter. I had high hopes for this place, but I would rather go a bit further to Eat Well Kitchen in Marblehead or Life Alive in Salem for smoothies that are just if not more nutritious and taste amazing. read more

I can't believe I haven't been here sooner. I'm so excited to have this cute coffee shop in Salem/Swampscott! I got the Chai Latte, added some vanilla, and it was divine! I really love their menu selection for drinks as well as food. I didn't get a chance to get any food this time but surely will try it the next. I was also pleasantly surprised to see they have a Boba tea menu- so definitely will be trying that next time. New business below my chiro's office! Great location in Salem on the Swampscott line. Even better they have coffee, iced coffee, THREE types of cold brew & nitro! The coffee is good and strong but with all those options you can find what you like if you like a weaker brew. They also have nitro tea which I can't wait to try, a variety of baked goods, and ice cream! The inside is clean and organized. I wish them well - I'm sure they will be crazy busy in no time. read more

This is my happy place. I'm here every weekend, if not multiple times a week, and they never disappoint. I have tried every coffee place in Salem and I just didn't truly enjoy any until I started coming here. I still can't figure out how they do it, but it's perfect every time. There's another place in town which shall remain unnamed, but brews the same coffee and it's terrible. I don't know what Java does differently, but it works. More importantly (ok, about of equal importance) is the atmosphere. It's like my very own Cheers. They make me feel welcome every time I walk in the door, and I genuinely look forward to saying hello and seeing how everyone is doing each week. Part of me wishes they were closer and walkable from my house, but my credit card is happier for it or I'd be there every day. Added bonus, as inconvenient as it is to have to drive over, being away from downtown is a major pro in October. Best coffee, best staff, A++! read more

I have been here twice now and the staff is beyond friendly. Plenty of options to choose from. It's awesome to find places that have a few gluten free things to choose from. Cute and clean cafe. I used to go to Starbucks. Now that I've found Sweet Java, I'm in no rush to go back. Their mini frittatas are 1000x better than SBUX egg bites. Coffee is fresh and delicious, boba tea, baked goods (including gluten free items you'd actually want to eat!), healthy smoothies, açaí bowls, ice cream... perfect place for a quick bite. This place is a great addition to the Vinnin Square area. I find myself here a few times a week. The coffee and tea menu has a nice amount of variety, and everything I've had to date has tasted good. The drip coffee has a smooth rich flavor - not burnt, flat, or overly bitter like the drip offered elsewhere - and the Spanish latte is a real treat. Their baked goods are *delicious* and include a variety of gluten-free items. The vibe is nice - the staff are friendly, and it's a great place to sit and chat. My only complaint is that they run out of gluten-free items by late afternoon - which speaks to how good their gluten-free goodies are! read more
