I had such high hopes for this spot. I am fully aware that we are living during strange times! So, maybe once things are "normal" again I will give them another shot. We ordered the French toast, and they were covered in syrup and sliced almonds. It was sadly not good at all. Unfortunately the worst French toast I've ever had... I ordered the egg & cheese sandwich and it was actually decent! Their chipotle aioli has great flavor but the sandwich barely had any on it. The Pluto smoothie was definitely delicious! 3.5/5. Nice Café style breakfast spot looking to join the Kingdom of brunches in Montclair. I decided to see how they're pancake game is since that's my go to and the other local spots seem to have mastered it. I got a side of bacon and an Iced coffee to compliment it. The Iced coffee was alright, standard kinda stuff. Pancakes were definitely a departure from the norm which is had it's positives and negatives. The good is the presentation is great - topped with fruit, garnish and served hot and included with extra syrup (many places I noticed you have to ask for additional). These pancakes are pumped full of the 'Kitchen's' pastry icing, so they really put the 'S' in sweet. In fact it's a bit too sweet and I don't say that too often. You almost don't need any syrup because the pancakes are literally like eating a cake for breakfast. The pancakes are a large pair, slightly fluffy but each slice of it you break off you're treated to that sweet filling which depending on how much sweetness you like can be good or bad. Different sure, but I wasn't moved by it and at almost $14 I was taken aback. Further, the menu items aren't really detailed - they don't list what's in the entrees so I had no idea their style of pancakes would be 'loaded up'. The Side of bacon was a bit higher than I've seen for small cuts which is not as good as the neighboring Plum on Park which has nice thick cuts. On the more positive side the waitstaff were very nice as is the manager who said hello. That is always appreciated. I would try again here and suggest it if you like breakfast with a twist but if all the dishes are as "sweet" as those pancakes, I may stick with more simple fare. read more

I've tried the energy bar and the feta spinach pastry on separate occasions. Both times I was surprised to find the prices revealed at the register, both not labeled on display. That's clever marketing of them for had I known, I would not have bothered with purchasing either of them. The energy bar was $6 and the pastry was $7 and change, and both times underwhelming. I understand it's not Starbucks and they're made in house, but I wasn't impressed. Maybe better luck next time! read more

This place was amazing. The food was great and the people were wonderful. We had dinner somewhere near by and strolled in for dessert. The people turned out to be wonderful and gave recommendations on what to try and talked about what each dessert was. We ordered dessert and sat down with our coffee. They have these soft pillows on the seat ware by the window. It was just very relaxing and the view was great. The service was great, they asked if were doing good but also gave us time to ourselves. We were very excited to try Sweet Kitchen for the first time....but were very underwhelmed by customer service experience! We called in our order and when we went to pick it up only half of pur order had actually been placed. We were told there was some communication confusion (aka someone dropped the ball) ...ok, that happens no biggie...but then.... Upon arrival (and prior to knowing our sandwiches had not even been started) I asked to add an extra croissant to the order. Once told it would be an additional 10-15 minutes for the order to be complete the woman gave me the total. When asked if she was going to take the additional croissant off the total she looked at me with a blank face and instead of saying "oh, yes of course" she said rather rudely "Ma'am we ARE sorry for the mistake on your order...If you want the croissant taken off the total I need to speak to my manager" and then again blank stare...I had to actually say to her "well then go talk to him". ...on a $47 to go order whats a $2 croissant and possibly retaining a customer?!?!? I have to admit, I was s bit hesitant to try this little gem on Bloomfield Ave. It looked a bit stoic for a pastry, desert place. But holy cannoli this place is amazing! Ignore the lackluster decor and salivate as you survey the deliciousness in front of you! The lattes are well, just perfect. The croissants are the perfect blend of crunchy-soft butter flake heaven. But don't stop there. There's some sort of cream-strawberry croissant puff-muffin thing which will give you an orgasm on the spot...and for the more savory peeps, there's delicious spinach flaky things to satisfy your craving. This place has a good atmosphere. The owner and the cook are both really super friendly and attentive. This place is really new, so I think their menu board isnt up yet. All they have are the drinks posted on the walls and asked for the menu from the worker. I had the grill cheese with comes with a side of salad. The salad was nice and fresh and dressing is light. The grill cheese itself was great. They bake their own brioche, and its very fluffy and buttery. Kind of reminds me of croissant, but not flaky. Overall would recommend :)! read more

Unfortunately, this 1 star is for customer service. I actually love this cafe for their apple tart, however, after my experience today I will never patronize them again. The young man behind the counter informed me that I had a "plain almond croissant"; when I took it out of the bag I noticed that it had a wet paste inside, therefore I said to him: "sir, you stated that this was a plain croissant" and he replied that it is plain; I stated again that it had a wet paste inside and therefore wasn't plain and told him that he should inform people as such, so they can make a more informed decision. He then became defensive, and said sarcastically "you're right, you're right, it's not plain, I'm wrong" while flailing his hands and raising his voice. My only point was that customers should be informed that the almond croissant has an "almond paste" inside. I informed him and the young lady who asked what was going on, that he was rude and unprofessional and he lied in my face about what transpired. I asked for their bosses number - which he said that he did not know and she said that she does not know if they can give it out. I hope that the owner reads this and provides his/her/they staff with the appropriate training moving forward. That young man was defensive, incapable of accepting responsibility for his actions, and did not know how to cope with being incorrect - maybe being at the register with customers is not the appropriate placement for him. read more

I am a home baker. I bake from scratch, and I'm really, really good at it. My grandma taught me. I use vodka in my pie dough, account for humidity, and can tell a pie crust is going to be good by the feel of it as I turn it out onto the board. I make the best Thanksgiving pies. No really. I do. I use expensive Madagascar vanilla paste, and farm eggs, and European butter. But we're remodeling our house, and I have no kitchen, so this year I *gulp* ordered our pies from Sweet Kitchen, apple, pecan, and pumpkin, to serve at Thanksgiving. Let me say that most importantly, their pastries are TO DIE FOR. They are all so fresh and probably have one of the best croissants in town! If it wasn't for that, I would never come here. Their coffee is okay - but the baristas don't know a single thing about coffee. They don't know what is nitro cold brew vs regular cold brew. They very often hire new people very frequently, which is fine, but again...they don't know anything about coffee and therefore people are getting trained poorly. The food is okay - it is just very heavy on the oil so there is no healthy eating here...even if you got just eggs avocado and toast. It's likely doused in grease. Everything on the menu looks delicious, but my favorite thing on their menu was the French toast. Literally the best kind I have ever had. It's made form ciabatta bread and is made to perfection. They also provide a generous portion of fruit on the side. As much as I want to try other items, I love love love their French toast. It's filling and oh so good. For warmer days there is outdoor seating, but it can get crowded quick as there aren't a whole lot of seating.
