This is a unique donut place as my only comparison is thousands of miles away in Osaka. First off, the highlight of this joint is the maple bacon and bourbon glazed donut. Both the bourbon and bacon flavors work off of each other and the sweetness of the icing, neither are fully present. What's created is sweet and salty combo with some flair. I highly recommend trying this, though it is sweeter than my perference. The icing on the pomegranate sourdough donut was too sweet though it enhanced the tanginess of the bread. It was hard to bit through, we ended up cutting into bit size pieces. As an experiment, I removed the icing from a standard donut and found the bread to be similar to holla or challah, except dryer. The croissant ended up tasting like a loaf of white bread. The layers were thick and not that much butter flavor came through. read more

Smells amazing as soon as you walk into the bakery! Ahhhh! On a Saturday, I got there around 10am, they had a line out the door. This line usually last until around 2-3. They do run out of their specialities doughnut. Get there early to see everything they have to offer! Around 2pm, they ran out of eggs. Dropped by on a Saturday morning - the bakery was alive with cheerful families, but there wasn't a long wait. I was able to easily find street parking in front of the building next door. The donuts were amazing! I tried a fudge covered sourdough donut - the sweet, dense chocolate fudge was a great balance to the almost springy, soft, tangy sourdough of the donut itself. I've never had anything like it! I also got a maple glazed bacon brioche donut which was delicious as well. The brioche dough was soft and pillowy- the perfect yeast donut texture - and the ratio of dough to glaze was perfect for the sweetness of the maple. The smoky saltiness of the bacon on top was a delicious contrast. I definitely want to return and try other flavors next time I'm in the area! read more

The best donuts in the area, hands down. Giant, sugary, and creative. The sourdough donuts were made for complementing coffee. I've had their egg sandwiches as well. The inside of the sandwich was good, but I was surprised to find the bread was the best part! When do you get an egg sandwich and the bread is that good?! They're always packed when I go, even on rainy days and during off-peak time. Sometimes they're out of something I wanted, but they always have something else I'd enjoy. The staff usually seems harried, like they need another person on the shift because of all their responsibilities. But they've never been rude or made mistakes, and I've even seen them chase down customers to make sure they don't forget part of their order. Outdoor seating on the front patio is nice! More places need a relaxed outdoor vibe. Egg sandwiches are $12. They're great, but I'm not sure how good an egg sandwich would have to be for me to be okay with spending $12 on it. I've had this place saved for years because I've seen so many good things about it. I was finally in the area so I decided to pop in this afternoon. All of the selections looked really good but I think they were already sold out of a few things. I ordered a tres leches donut because I'm a sucker for tres leches, and asked the employee for a recommendation between the sourdough doughnut options. He said he really liked the coffee one so I opted for that one. The doughnuts are massive and very pretty. However, the texture was off to me. Not quite stale, but they weren't as fluffy and soft as I hoped-- the texture resembled more of like bread, or like a Kaiser roll? Don't get me wrong, I love a chewy bread, but this wasn't really chewy in the right way to me either. The pastry cream on the tres leches was pretty tasty though, and the dough that was covered by the cream was softer. The sourdough also had a tangy flavor that was interesting, but I'm not sure it paired well with the coffee. read more

Stopped by Montclair Bread Company after breakfast and had an awesome experience. The bakery is super clean and as soon as you walk in the staff are super welcoming and friendly. All of the croissants, donuts and baked goods looked outstanding so it was hard to choose. I went with the classic pink frosted donut and it was absolutely delicious! You can taste the difference between a real donut like this and the stuff you get at Dunkin. I've always heard great things about this place, so I was really looking forward to trying it out, but unfortunately, it was a major letdown. We visited on a weekday mid-morning so it wasn't busy at all. Even still, the space felt completely cold and uninviting with more of a warehouse/storage-room feel than of a bakery. The service didn't help the experience either. The employee behind the counter didn't acknowledge us at all -- no greeting, no thank you, literally not a single word spoken -- and seemed visibly annoyed at our presence (I assume because it was dead prior to us coming in). Before we even closed out our transaction, she was back to sitting down on her phone paying us no mind. As for the donuts, I will say they did have a really nice flaky, croissant like texture that I really loved. The downside was that they were completely smothered in glaze, leaving the bottoms soggy, oily, and completely inedible. Overall, I don't really understand the hype around this place. I personally wouldn't recommend it and I definitely won't be returning. read more

Soon after their second store closed in our hometown, we stopped here hoping for the Breakfast Bombs we had loved at Gunkin. Not only did the attentive server admit this location never had them, the donuts - even the usually amazing Tres Leches - were not as good. I fully confess that a) Gunkin/Rabble Rise donuts were almost never sweet enough for this sugar addict, and b) my donut religion is cake, not yeast. Still, when we had tried their new cake ones, we both agreed it was like a piece of bread with no sugar. It almost feels like a place where diabetics can enjoy donuts. We may return when in the area to give this original location another chance, but in the meantime we will mourn the loss of the egg-cheese-veg bready "bombs" and the convenient friendly service in New Paltz. read more

I've heard of many donut shops running out quickly, but we went around 11 am and they still had tons - They taste AMAZING!! Bread and donuts here are fantastic and they have decent coffee they bring in. My only issue is service, it takes too long. I don't know how many times I've walked in to purchase donuts that are already made and after I make the purchase, it takes them fully 10 to 15 minutes to give me donuts that are already out and ready to just pack in a box. read more

It has taken me way to long to finally come here as this place did not disappoint. I got a box of various doughnut and a yum bun and they were all delicious. The yum bun though was the star of the show with its pillowy texture, cinnamon bun flavor and delicious outer cinnamon sugar casing. I would drive the 20 minutes just for this little one! The donuts I got were great as well, a mixture of the sourdough and brioche donuts. The sourdough donuts were massive. You can definitely taste the sourdough bread in these and they had a consistency that was a cross between bread and donut, but still pillowy. The brioche donuts were a dream and nice and fluffy. The chocolate icing on the ones I had was rich and chocolate let just what you want. These were definitely delicious. My only complaints were the cost, as I got 7 donuts and it cost me over $30 (excluding my yum bun). while I know they are artisan, the flavors I got were not over the top they were just frosted so that's a little bit of a bummer. Also, some of the flavored icing donuts didn't have a bold flavor of what they were supposed to be, like the coffee dozed sourdough just tasted like sugary glaze on a donut pillow. However I would certainly come back for that yum bun and sit outside on their patio with a cup of coffee and basque in the glory of being in pastry heaven! It is safe to say that all the staff that I talked to were friendly and welcoming especially the cashiers. I like the texture overall much more than the average Krispy Kreme or Donkin but all the doughnuts have pretty much same texture although they have different toppings or sometimes fillings. I wish they would change up the dough consistency a bit more. The churro was a miss for me did not give me Mexican dulce de leche churros feels which I love and find most authentic. However these are pretty good doughnuts from what we have around this area. One more thing, the Cold brew was like drinking battery acid! Horrible, the least smooth cold brew coffee I've EVER had, that was the only major disappointment out of my experience here, don't drink the cold brew. read more

Very good bakery here at Montclair! Been here a couple of times and always enjoy the donuts and croissants. But i need to work on coming here early as they run out quick with certain goodies. There was creme brulee and blood orange donuts offered today but i missed that. Oh well next time. They also have sandwiches and drinks. Outdoor seating is available as well and perfect for summers. Street parking could get full during busy hours but being that they are not located at the main street there is always a chance of finding one if youre willing to walk a few minutes away. This was my first visit since they changed the business name. We ordered online for pick up because of the rain. It worked out perfectly! The order was ready by the time we arrived. The sunshine glazed is surprisingly delicious, a refreshing twist on the classic glazed which is also yummy. The chocolate sourdoughnut felt overwhelming, and almost too chewy? Tried out an assortment of donuts as well as a corned beef and mushroom sandwich. My friend had a vegetarian quiche as well. The donuts were amazing tasting! They were so fresh, large, and full of good flavor. I'm really glad we tried a few of them. Favorite was the maple bacon! Covered in a generous amount of bacon and delicious maple glaze. My friend enjoyed his quiche and it came with a salad and vinaigrette dressing. The staff was very friendly and we were glad that it was warm enough to sit outside as they have no indoor seating. Here is my only complaint and I really hate that I had to make it. I paid $12.75 for the corned beef and mushroom sandwich. The sandwich was just two pieces of wheat bread put together with the ingredients inside. The ingredients were good but the sandwich was just so incredibly small. I was a bit dumfounded as the sandwich was just so small for the price. I really hated to make this complaint but I just can't justify that next time. The quiche was half the price and came with the salad. For donuts though, this place was excellent and it is worth making the trip! read more
