We know the brand and the quality because we have picked up these pies occasionally in various locations. I was primarily looking for an apple crumble pie, a frozen one I could take home to cook later. I was totally floored to see they also have these GINORMOUS chicken pot pies that are just as big as the other fruit based pies. A 10 inch chicken pot pie!? How medieval, I had to get one of those as well. These pies are all double crusted, not just a layer of crust on top, but an actual encased pie. A layer of crust, chicken pot pie filling and a layer of crust on top. Outstanding! ....but then we saw the treats and kinda lost it. Monstrous cookies. We got some Ranger cookies as well that are a delicious combination of dried fruits and nuts. The chocolate chip cookies look great, haven't chomped on that one yet. Then I saw the banana coffee cake. That one didn't make it out of the parking lot. The cake was pretty large for a single serving. It was very moist with a frosting drizzled across the top, and the banana flavor was spot on perfect. We felt like a couple of kids in this store being excited about all these offerings. We also ended up getting a hand held cherry pie and an apple pie. They were shaped like a pasty in a crust and went down easy. So many different treats, so little time. At least I got my apple pie for later and the chicken pot pies, very interested in that one. This is definitely a Mom and Pop shop, or should I say a 'Mom and Daughter' shop. They are very friendly. The store itself has a little bit of a Frontier country kind of feel and is very welcoming.

Took it home, heated it up in the oven and took one bite, and I was in heaven. This is the first time I've ever tasted marionberry and I found out that this fruit was developed here in Oregon back in the 50s. I'm used to raspberries and blueberries, but this is a very unique berry, especially made with this pie that has a really nice and delicious crust. Now I've decided what pie to serve during Thanksgiving. Can't wait again to have this pie in a few months.

So we saw Carlton Bakery and they delivered on the veggie options. We both ordered local mushroom sandwiches without meat and a couple of croissants all to go. The sandwiches came with small salads with radish and soy beans (very tasty). I probably could have bought half the items in the store as everything looked delicious. The sandwiches were tasty, good bread which was lightly toasted. The croissants were very good as well, pretty close to those in France. It took about 5-10 minutes for our order to be ready. The service was great, friendly and quick. I'd definitely return to Carlton Bakery in the future.

Staff were super friendly and accommodating. The food was SO DELICIOUS. I got the special which was the chicken fried steak and my wife got the crab Benedict - both were phenomenal! This allows for patrons to wait inside without feeling congested but also means you'll have to be quick whenever a table does clear out. The selection of items here aren't much so most people probably come here for their lunch/entree menu. They assemble everything fresh it appears-- they heat up croissants at the griddle and use the toaster oven to heat up others. The cookie was intensely dense and rich in chocolate. The larger sea salt flakes added such a nice contrast to the sweetness.

In contrast to a lot bakeries that are primarily takeout only, Little T has a much larger footprint with plenty of seating. When we walked in on a weekend morning, there were lots of people sitting around, sipping on drinks, and working. Kouign Amann ($6) - The top of the kouign amann (the bottom while baking) looks nicely glazed with plenty of sugar. They layers look well defined and it looks like a crispy flaky treat. The other side looks like a sad wrinkly croissant. The interior consists of really thick laminated layers that have a ton of air gap in between that has more in common with risen puff pastry than croissant. This makes it thick, bready, and doughy and gives it a wheat flour-like taste rather than sugar or butter. There isn't that much crispness and other than a bit of sugar glaze on top, the pastry isn't very sweet, not is it buttery at all. I didn't like this kouign amann much. (2/5) Chocolate Praline Croissant ($6.25) - This croissant looks like it has decent layering and a great flaky crust at first glance. The croissant is indeed very flaky and crisp on top, making flakes and powdered sugar fly everywhere while eating. The lamination is again a bit questionable, with very thick layers and huge air pockets making the croissant very bready. At least there's no wheat flour taste. There's only a single line of chocolate in the center rather than the more typical two chocolate baton configuration. The chocolate leaks out of the sides of the croissant, caramelizing against the baking sheet and creating different flavors. (3/5) Masa Baguette ($5.75) - This baguette has a great crust combined with a moist and chewy interior. It's much darker in color than a typical baguette and has a very well developed taste, like sourdough mixed with corn. A very interesting take on a baguette that's quite delicious. Also of note is how they serve the baguette - wrapped up in butcher paper with an end of the baguette sticking out. (5/5) Unfortunately, I didn't find the laminated pastries to be very good at Little T. Size-wise, the pastries seem to be a bit smaller than competitors but with similar pricing. Their breads seem to be the superior choice and the only items I would order again if I revisited in the future. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms

I firmly believe a birthday celebration isn't a celebration without a cake! Helen Bernhard Bakery has been a consistent source of last-minute birthday cakes when I need them. The greatest thing about this bakery is that there's almost always a few cakes in their case that are ready and available. Because I'm not super picky, a Frozen princess works for random occasions like my 48-year-old friend's birthday! But there are generally nondescript cakes available that can be personalized. Did you know Helen Bernhard Bakery is over 100 years old, and it's one of the first woman-owned businesses in Portland? There are many stories circulating about Helen's fiery personality, and her no-nonsense business tactics. I love celebrating the few remaining businesses that have roots going back to the early days of Portland. It's wonderful hearing stories from longtime customers, and learning about the positive impact these businesses have made in the community, and the sense of nostalgia many people have for them. It means a lot to me to live in a city that values history and tradition, as well as what's hot and new. Thanks, Helen Bernhard Bakery, for always being dependable, and having lots of great products that make celebrations and entertaining a breeze.

She wanted red velvet. She also wanted a very specific color ( burgundy/bordeaux) and unfortunately they could not match the color. They did say they would try, but it ended up being a purplish eggplant. That's ok, I understand it might be hard to match a color. But as a result of adding color to it they had to use buttercream on top and the cream cheese inside. Here's where I feel like if I had known what I know now, I could've helped remedy the issue I had with this cake and hopefully my review can help them or someone else. It's not that the cake was dry, but I believe the ratio of cake to frosting was really bad. I posted my photo to demonstrate. The cake had 2 layers but they were very large layers and the cream cheese frosting in the middle was very thin. As thick as these layers were, they really should have cut each layer in half and frosted them to make it a 4 layer cake. So it's not that the cake was dry, but we couldn't really swallow it down because it was all cake. I would also like to state that this cake cost $85. But when I picked it up the refunded be $13.25 so it was a $72 cake, which is still very pricey for this cake. I had better luck and it cost less when I would just buy their cakes out of the case last minute. They were cheaper and had more filling to them. I don't think I will custom order a cake from here again. It just wasn't worth the cost and it didn't look like the photo I sent for inspiration.

I was treated crappily by staff who I observed saying my order was not their responsibility. Not everyone there was bad. The initial service I got was good, but my coffee was so poorly slapped together because I spoke up. My sandwich was also slapped together missing ingredients I paid for, so enjoy the extra money I guess. Here's how the interaction went. I was assured my mocha would be ready in a few minutes, before my food, from a really nice staff person who too my to-go order. They instructed me where to stand. I watched the person put together my mocha. All that was needed was ice. My food came out quickly and I took it while waiting for my drink. 15 minutes passed. Two staff members looked at my drink and one said "who put this here " and another person said "I don't know, not my problem". I spoke up and said "hey that's my drink and if you put ice in it, I promise I'll get out of your way" - it was busy and packed. I was trying to be understanding. One of them made a disgusted face at me and said "I was gonna put ice in it!!!" ... wow. Eventually they did. And did it so sloppily that there was mocha all over the drink. The top was put on poorly and the drink spilled all over me. I tried to tell another server who was greeting and seating people but they kept saying "oh it's okay! It's totally fine" - no, it actually isn't. I get it. You don't want my business of 15+ years, but there are nicer ways of conveying that. I was ripped off and treated in a way I don't treat my enemies. But just like my order, that's "not your problem", right?

My breakfast partner had the veggie hash which was enjoyed very much. I had the Truckstop breakfast with 2 eggs, breakfast potatoes, veggie sausage (comes with your choice of protein), and a cat's head biscuit (that's what we called giant biscuits in the South). The cook prepared the scrambled eggs perfectly - I order eggs "scrambled, soft" but don't always come out that way, but they were expertly on target here. The breakfast potatoes were glorious- a generous serving of perfectly seasoned, fluffy soft on the inside, crispy on the outside, two pieces of tasty vegan sausage, and the biscuit had been sliced and heated on the stove and came with butter and what I suspect might have been housemade berry jam. I am fussy about pancakes and didn't see anyone else with them on their plates (as I rubbernecked around the room to see what people were eating) but I think I'll try one next time, now that I know what an exceptionally good job they did with everything on this first visit. Their menu offers a number of options for both drinks and food. I had a mango mimosa (one of the best mimosas I've had in some time) to drink, and a pancake and the vegetable hash to eat. The pancake was wonderful. The hash was a great mix of veggies and the most perfect poached eggs on top. It was served with a small spring mix salad. My complaint with all the food was that it was just ok. While prepared well, it all lacked flavor. Nothing seasoned or stood out as a great dish. The service was fantastic.
