tl;dr quality is high and prices are low; go early for the best possible selection, and don't miss out on the excellent apple fritter Across Los Angeles' ever-changing donut landscape, the countless standalone shops have had to evolve to stand out from the crowd. At Long Beach's Sweet Retreat Donuts, that meant limited-edition experimental donut varieties (mostly with tropical flavor profiles), as well as a reliable vegan donut lineup. Clearly, Sweet Retreat has been doing something right, as it's been a Pacific Coast Highway favorite for a decade. Over the years, it has garnered recognition from plenty of local news outlets, from Eater LA to LAist. The cramped strip mall is more eye-catching for its reptile supply store rather than its donut shop. Inside the shop, the expansive, donut-themed cartoon mural to the right immediately makes a statement. Houseplants are plentiful across the otherwise undecorated, whitewashed walls. Donuts are organized on trays by price, with the charge doodled directly onto the glass with a white marker. Ambient noise from the television is drowned out by chattering customers and the buzzing coffee machine. During the summer months, the AC-less shop feels tropically balmy. My partner and I arrived at Sweet Retreat late one Sunday morning, and the shop still boasted a steady stream of customers. By the time of our visit, the remaining selection was regrettably slim -- beyond the standard fare, the most unique donuts sported either candy coating or tropical frosting. We opted for a hibiscus-frosted raised donut and an apple fritter. The former had an excellent donut base, and the hibiscus frosting was floral and tropical (albiet I would have enjoyed a more punchy flavor). Meanwhile, the apple fritter fell on the cinnamon-y side, heavily doused in glaze so that each bite (even the edges) melted in your mouth; Sweet Retreat's rendition was one of my favorites in Greater LA. Our Vietnamese iced coffee was strong and sugary, but nothing more memorable than peer coffeeshops. The service was efficient, and our two donuts cost a reasonable $5 (even frill-free mom-and-pop shops charge in this range nowadays). The selection was sorely lacking, but Sweet Retreat more than made up for that with its high quality and reasonable prices. This bakery may not warrant a dedicated trip out of the way, but it is sure to deliver a satisfying treat if you're already in the neighborhood. read more

In contention for best donuts in the city. I didn't get them at peak freshness but I did heat them up in the oven for a few minutes before I devoured them. That apple fritter was fantastic. Haven't had one in years and this one made me miss them. Crispy on the outside and a fluffy interior. Although I don't recall seeing or biting into any apples, it was fine because the apple flavor was large & present throughout. The regular glazed was a classic delight. Super soft with a yellow brioche type texture and interior. Can't go wrong with this excellence. The red velvet variant was about the same. I didn't really taste any thing special from the topping. That chocolate sprinkled, cake type donut was a delight. As was the Maple Bar; which actually tasted better to me after being chilled in the fridge. And lastly, my favorite: the raspberry filled glazed. Everything I loved about the original glazed but with an incredible surprise inside. Filling was literally flawless. The first time I came this place was closed, but I saw the open sign and finally was able to try it. The donuts are delicious and there is a good amount of variety. My favorite so far is the blueberry crumble. I also like chocolate on chocolate but they didn't have any when I went. The lady working was very sweet and said she'd mention that I liked them to the owner and see if they can do them more often. I came in the try 1 donut and ended up getting 4 because I knew my wife would want to try some like the passion fruit. The place is also quite nice and inviting inside. You could come here and get a coffee and work (not sure if there is free WiFi). read more

Long Beach never ceases to amaze me. There are surprises everywhere. I drove by this afternoon on my way to run an errand. I was hoping to stop by 7/11 or a big chain coffee shop to get an iced coffee and I saw a donut shop in the corner of a small shopping center. When I walked it I immediately felt a positive energy. The wall on the right is a beautiful bright yellow with art and there were tables and plants hanging around. I ordered the Sea Salt Ice Coffee and it was so good. It's on the sweeter side but an easy fix if you don't like it too sweet. I also had a dozen donut holes for $2. It was a lovely experience with delicious coffee and donuts. I'll be coming back again soon to try all the other goodies. read more

Freshest tastiest donuts in the area. My favorites are all the blueberry and strawberry options. The green tea banana smoothie was delicious and not too sweet. Some of my favorite donuts and the best donut holes. Sad to have moved a bit away but do make the drive here and there to get some treats. I have ordered from them multiple times and have had special requests for different events and they have never disappoint. Came in while I was waiting for my hair appointment nearby. From the time I walked in the staff was warm and welcoming and the donuts were pretty, tasty and the coffee was fresh! This shop was so clean inside I decided to sit and have my donut and coffee there! Awesome donuts! I'm not vegan, but if you are they have a great vegan selection. I ended up going with the Halloween ones. I got the coco one which was pistachio glazed and a red velvet cake ghost one. The person that helped me at the counter was extremely friendly and helpful! I'd definitely come back again. Sweet Retreat Donuts is a Long Beach gem. My husband and I mainly came here for the vegan donut selection and we were not disappointed. So many options to choose from! We shared the vegan tiger tail, vegan chocolate raised donut, and 6 donut holes. Often times vegan alternatives don't have the same taste and texture as the original, but we didn't notice any difference as we unapologetically scarfed them down. The vegan tiger tail was our absolute favorite - a glazed twisted donut with a chocolate and cinnamon swirl. The chocolate raised donut was simply perfect. As far as the vegan donut holes go - I could eat 1 million of those and still be craving them. We also thoroughly enjoyed our iced Vietnamese coffee and iced mocha. The service was great and quick and the interior seating was cute and cozy for a little morning date. I am from out of town but I will purposefully put myself in the Long Beach area to be able to enjoy THE BEST vegan donuts again! read more

Before I picked up my good sis, had to find a nearby donut shop by her place and this spot popped up. Super cute inside. Loved their wall of art. I waited to come on a Friday specifically to try the vegan raised donut. I'm a purist and believe in a simple donut to really prove the best of the best. Bought one glazed and one cinnamon sugar vegan raised (yeast) donut and paid $4.50. Some of the Yelp pics are old bc they are $2.25 each now for the simple ones. Non-vegan are like $1.25. Decent, not the best I've ever had. The parking lot was super tricky to get out of, but that was just bad timing. read more

YUMMY!!!! First time coming here and it's super cute inside, you wouldn't expect it from looking on the outside. They have a wide variety of selections for donuts and drinks like coffee, teas, smoothies & milk teas, I didn't know how to decide We chose to get a half dozen based off what looked most appetizing in the glass. We chose a taro milk tea to pair and ordered a ham and cheese for something savory. The drinks are made to order and while we were waiting, we decided to sit down and try a bite of every donut we got with our little ones. Everything was so tasty! The donuts have a perfect texture. We got all raised donuts and they were nice and chewy. The toppings and glazes were a nice texture. We were so busy tasting our donuts we walked out the door and realized we forgot our ham and cheese haha (that's why it's not pictured in the photo) Definitely don't skip on the ham and cheese! My kids and I basically inhaled it once we got into the car. The croissant was crispy, flaky, chewy and the inside was warm and gooey! The staff was really sweet. We will definitely be back. Cute, cute, cute. Quaint sized, or should I say bite sized, yes, but the floor plan really makes the most of its size. The food smells great, tastes great. Alternative milk options are available, which is great. Service was good. Polite, quick, nice, et all. This spot has actually been on my To-Try List for a few years, due to its early opening time, but I actually only got to stop by because I was originally picking up something for my brother. What a gem hidden in Long Beach! Plenty of choices and there are even some vegan donuts too! I've visited a number of times and have purchased vegan donuts for a few people. Nobody was able to tell they were vegan and were praising how delicious the donuts & frosting were! My absolute favorite here are their old fashioneds - crispy outside and fluffy on the inside. The only bummer is 3 out of 5 times I visit, they don't have any for sale! :( Also can't skip out on their ham & cheese croissaints! Flakey croissant on the outside, gooey cheese and some deli meat in the middle. It's so simple, but such a great reminder of the simpler times in my childhood. Definitely worth a shot to visit and grab a variety of their donuts to try. All the employees there are super nice and patient, so if you don't know what you want, just ask for suggestions! =) read more

If you are someone who loves donuts, smoothies, milk tea, & boba but everywhere you go isn't that good then this is the place for you. This was my second time coming with my best friend and we love it. The employees are very nice and patient, the prices are affordable, the inside is very aesthetic, and overall the whole donut shop has a great vibe. I had the cereal donut and milk tea which was really good. The milk tea actually tasted like honeydew. Some places I go to and get milk tea all I could really taste is just mainly milk but not this one and the donut had just the right amount of sweetness...10/10. My best friend and I shared the Oreo one, it was a little to chocolatey for us but other than that it was okay. And they do have Vegan Donuts!! We came to try their vegan donuts and they were the best vegan donuts we've had anywhere! Not only that but so many places overprice the vegan donuts so much it makes it hard to buy many at a time and here the prices are actually good. Amazing. We tried a lot but my favorites were the cinnamon roll donut and the tiger tail. Their donut holes were really good too. We also tried some drinks and got a strawberry mango blended with chamoy and some strawberry bits as well as a hibiscus tea with strawberry and chia seeds. The drinks were really really good and the worker was super helpful in deciding what to get and the options on drinks are almost unlimited. They're really willing to make any combination of things you want and there are a lot of vegan options even for the Vietnamese coffee with condensed "milk". The interior is cute and has lots of seating and and a friendly fun atmosphere. Parking was super easy. This place is so great will definitely be coming back! They will sell out of vegan stuff pretty early so make sure to get there early or order ahead. read more

Anyone listen to Sporkful podcast? Well, this woman does. She also saves a recommendations like this doughnut shop on Yelp after listening to an episode on the history of doughnuts in America over a year ago. I arrive around 2 pm on Friday. There aren't many options left. The only cake options are blueberry filling. Everything else is cake and if you're a true doughnut connoisseur, you know which one is legit. I'm not vegan, but do eat vegan doughnuts. Since there were more vegan yeast options, I went that route and choose the hibiscus. The icing was flavorful with a hint of tartness. Delicious. They have daily drink specials. Friday is milk tea. I opted for it with boba, which needed a few more minutes as it was a bit too hard. It's made with fresh tea, so the ice does help in cooling it down. read more

Nice little shop in Long Beach. I had a crew working the weekend so I popped in for a dozen. They were all very tasty and reasonably priced. There is a pretty good selection of vegan donuts that look like regular donuts (though I did not get any), so if you are vegan, or inclined that way, here is an option for you. read more

The pandan topping was sweet but the mascarpone was reminiscent of a strawberry yogurt and the flavors blended perfectly. The other donuts were huge, fluffy and perfectly textured. I would have liked a stronger biscoff and matcha strawberry flavor in those crumbles but at least they were not sweet! Just delicious. The prices are fairly high but I will definitely stop by occasionally to see what delicious creations they are whipping up and get myself a treat!

The interior matched the rest of neighborhood with random stuff laid out on counter tops, and a general dirty feeling that made me consider whether I wanted to buy food here, but I was already inside. There was a single woman working the counter. She was polite and matter of fact. I had promised my kids donuts, so I ordered my box to go. While she used appropriate tongs to put them in the box, she didn't bother to fully close or seal the box. Just looking to get out of there as quickly as possible, I headed immediately back to my car but was followed by an unknown man shouting at me asking if I could spare a dollar. I quickly fidgeted for my keys and pulled the door closed and locked it behind me. This was at 9am. I cannot imagine this place late at night.
