Yeooo wait a sec. Sweet Tomatoes is soo good. I honestly can't remember the last time I ate here, but it's been a staple in Newton Center for many years. Having grown up here, I do love seeing places still standing strong through the years. :) It's been in Newton Center since 1998! They have 2 other locations in West Newton and Needham as well. We got a large cheese and a large pepperoni/mushroom. Both were so good, and HUGE too. These pies are massive. Thin crust, tomato chunks in the sauce (I love when pizza comes served like this. One of my favorite pizza spots is Upper Crust in Brookline which is very similar to this), and you can see the pizza ovens right when you walk in. Also, their staff is super friendly. I will say our total for 2 pies was $52 which is pretty steep but that's the going rate these days I guess. Def throwing this back in the rotation. Soooo good. read more

Had the vegetarian slice on a middle of the week lunch period quick snack meal. It was decent, with plentiful vegetables on the slide, and a fairly crispy crust backing it up. Overall: a solid local pizza parlor! Their pizzas are done a la NY style but with a heavy emphasis on the tomatoes. Their cheese pizza should really be renamed cheese and tomatoes as there were softened chunks of tomatoes on them all. Passed by here so many times, finally decided to give it a try. We ordered take out. The service was friendly and quick. Not huge inside but have few seatings and very clean. No regrets! Only regret was not taking a picture before devouring it in the car. We got a large sweet tomatoe pie and added pepperoni. They cut it into 10 slices and the pie was huge. I normally don't like thin crusts because they can be too thin and extra crunchy. But theirs is perfect. Nice light crunch and can still taste the dough part. Not overly saucy as they have fresh tomatoes that gives it the extra flavor and texture unlike others where the marinara sauce is dripping as you bite into it. A plain slice is $3.50, and is huge (about the size of two average slices). I ate one slice and that was lunch. Whole pies tend to be more expensive, so slices is the way to go. We have been customers of Sweet Tomatoes for about 4 years. I like the pepperoni. They had peppered spices that give it a little kick. The cheese pizza we add sun dried tomatoes to it. I prefer it with extra tomato sauce. Otherwise it's a bit dry. My significant other she likes it with without the extra sauce. The Greek salad is good. I recommend that as well. read more

We recently hired Sweet Tomatoes to cater our backyard wedding. From the moment we spoke with Hedy, we felt at ease. We knew we loved the food, but we were immediately sold on her. She was friendly, kind, and helpful. She made suggestions for the menu and was sensitive to our guests with allergies. She provided a menu that was mouth-watering. Our guests could not stop raving about the hors d'oeuvres and the pizza. Our guests with gluten, dairy, nut, and even tomato allergies were well taken care of. Hedy thought of everything. She was easy to work with and thought of details that we had forgotten about and took care of them for us (getting enough ice, providing adorable ice buckets for our drinks). Most importantly, Hedy and her INCREDIBLE staff made us feel so well-taken care of at our wedding. They were kind, friendly, attentive, and went the extra mile with the cleanup (they organized our porch for us, ok? Come on, who does that?!). The servers made sure we were fed, and at the end of the night, Hedy had carefully packed slices of each kind of pizza for us and left them in our freezer because she suspected we were too busy to try everything while we were mingling with our guests. Thin crust done right. When I think of Sweet Tomatoes, the first thing I think about is the sauce. It's chunky and you can visibly see the tomatoes and garlic on the pizza. When you take a bite, you can feel the tomatoes burst in your mouth surrounded by hot melty cheese. On the other hand, the crunch of the crust is the perfect contrast. The pizza never feels too heavy because of the thin crust and the acidity from the tiny charred bits on the bottom from the oven being a full balance of flavor. Making pizza is like being the wicked witch in 'Hansel & Gretel.' 'Hansel & Gretel' is an old German folktale about two children who get left in the woods by an (allegedly) abusive stepmother who doesn't want to look at another woman's eggs. But then the kids are taken captive by a witch who wants to eat them. Thanks to the girl's ingenuity, the witch ends up in the oven instead and they escape. Almost getting stewed alive puts the domestic situation in perspective for the ungrateful little shits. Nevertheless, their overindulging dad decides to leave the stepmother who was just trying to build a new life for herself. The brats grow up happily ever after enjoying free college and universal healthcare. I feel bad for the witch. Her only crime was wanting the freshest-tasting meat and she was ready to go the distance to get it. A few screams from the oven is a small price to pay. Pizza dough is also a living thing and yeast are the kids. You feed them with sugar, give them a place to stay, fatten them up, and then, before they know what's happening GIANT FLAME! All for my pleasure. But if you don't get the science right, it may not be that pleasurable. Sweet Tomatoes needs to spend more time on its dough. The crust was thin and crispy but bland. A properly prepared dough will have sweetness to it from prolonged enzyme activity. This one didn't. It was leaning towards the flat taste of the white flour. I think I was partly disappointed by the fact that the crust was thin at all. There's a big sign above the seating area that says it's a Neapolitan pizza joint. Neapolitan pizza has a tall, puffy crust, or cornicione, with an open, airy interior. The dough is so soft that the slice can't hold up to gravity when you pick it up. That's what I was expecting. What I got was more of a Bari-style pizza: Rolled out and crisp. Bari pizza is from Puglia, a region separate from Naples. But even a good Bari dough should have some sweetness to it from the yeast's activity. What just about saved the slice was the freshness of the toppings. The tomato sauce was not particularly well-seasoned and you can't really go wrong with cheese and pepperoni. It was also right out of the oven. But that's about it for redeeming factors. A pizza sauce needs brightness. Some say it doesn't need to be cooked before spreading it on the dough. If you live at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, this might work. If you live near Star Market though, cook those jokers up with some salt and garlic. Throw a squirt of lemon juice on there to brighten it up if you need to. I hate giving reviews like this when the staff is polite and two old Italian dudes are slaving away with large discs of dough, doing what they love the most. But I've made and eaten enough pizzas to know what I like. My finished crust could lure the Zodiac Killer out of hiding. I've often compared pizza to dating. An excellent pizza is like a date that ends at third base. It makes me want more even though I'm full. I'm fist-pumping and debating whether to tell my friends. I replay it in my head. Not-so-good pizza is like going in for a kiss and she dodges you like Trinity in the Matrix and instead gives you an upper-back hug, ass so far out, the two of you look like the outline of a circus tent. You try to forget it. I think I will go back to try their whole specialty pies instead of the generic slices. This is one of the top pizza places in Massachusetts in my humble opinion. Pizza Style: This is as close to true NY style pizza as I've tasted in the bay state. For starters, it's cooked in a pizza oven. When you walk in, you immediately see the beautiful ovens that are essential for making a decent pie. Forget about that conveyor belt crap, you won't find it here. Nothing worse than walking into a place and seeing those awful conveyor belts. I'd walk right out if that was the case. Ingredients: Hand stretched dough! Yay. You can see chunks of tomato on the pizza, which means the sauce is natural and robust. It doesn't taste artificial and crammed full of sugar, like Dominoes for example. Toppings are amazing, and I've only scratched the surface. Price: $3 for a cheese slice is par for the course. The slices are decent size, so two will fill me up, and I eat a good amount. What could be improved: The two locations I've been to, lacked ample seating. Both in the Newton area. I'm not sure if this is just the way they lay out the locations, but it'd be nice to feel comfortable sitting and eating. I feel mostly like I have to eat and run, as it can be cramped. SUMMARY: NY Style slices (as approved by a native NY'er)... don't trust any place that says it has NY style. The proof is in the ovens! Also, I blot my pizza with a napkin, in true NY fashion, these slices have a sheen of oil on top, just like the neighborhood pizza places used to make it, back on Long Island and Brooklyn. Awesome. I also find it hard to locate places in Mass that do pizza by the slice. Those that do, have a little heated display case...ick. After that, you'd probably want to find somewhere else to enjoy your pies. Theirs is of the thin crust variety. The white clam pizza $15/$18.95 with garlic and lemon was quite yummy. I preferred it over the BBQ chicken $16.25/$20.95. However, with my father's poor luck in the tooth department, his first bite happened to hit shell. I guess that means that it is real clam! In case of allergies, better to ask too many questions. Our salad, which was advertised simply as "Baby Spinach" $7 on the blackboard, came decorated with unexpected goat cheese and dried cranberries. And this one had a small window for the littles to watch! The pizza here is good. Thin crust. There is something seriously wrong with their delivery service. I ordered a pizza , charged it to my card, they added delivery fees and a tip for the driver. They told me it would take half an hour to 45 minutes to deliver. An hour later, no pizza. I looked out the window and saw the box had been left on the ground in front of the door in the rain. Some of the slices of pizza had popped out and was lying on the ground in the rain. No one rang my bell. No one called my phone. They took my number down at the time of delivery. I called the store to complain about the state of the delivery and they asked me if I wanted another pizza. There was no way I was trusting that delivery guy again. He might for all you know spit on the pizza and I wasn't taking the risk! I still haven't got my money back apparently they don't know to charge back on to the card! I would never get delivery from these people. You never know what the delivery guy might do. If he can leave pizza slices on the ground in the rain, I would not put it past him to tamper with the deliveries. I for one do not want food that has been sneezed over or whatever.
